This book had me hooked from the very beginning. Sam, Ben, Tyler and Em are such loveable characters and I truly felt myself rooting for them the whole time. I loved the representation of a main character with dyslexia and the prejudices people can face, but more importantly the support you should receive.
Really did not enjoy the writing style I have to say, unfortunately, or the way in which the two love interests met each other and interacted with one another.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this new novel.
I liked this one especially for the relationship that evolved between Samantha and her half-brother Tyler. It was heart warming to be with them on that journey.
I also enjoyed reading about Bennett and his understanding about Samanthas challenges and that he didn't want to change them. The one thing i wasn't found of was the part before the ending regarding Bennetts behavior.
This was a cute and lighthearted read. I enjoyed reading it for the most part and really loved seeing Sam connect with her brother. Generally, the characters were well crafted and easy to understand and connect with.
I also enjoyed seeing the relationship develop between Ben and Sam and I liked the bookish hot librarian thing that Ben had going for him. Overalls this was an enjoyable read and I would recommend to anyone looking for something lighthearted and fun.
I would like to thank the publisher for providing me with an ARC through NetGalley. As always, my opinions are entirely my own.
A huge apologies to the publisher and author for not reviewing this book sooner
I read this book a fair few weeks ago, when I was on my “summer holiday”, which seems a long time away!
This book was perfect escapism for a summer getaway and was everything it needed to be.
Whilst this book was a light summer romance, it taught me a lot about dyslexia that I didn’t realise. I innocently, had no idea that certain fonts and spacing is needed to assist people who experience dyslexia, with their reading.
I particularly found the font easier to read.
Em was my favourite character. I related to her so much, particularly with her health anxieties.
The book was steamy in places and was everything that I expected this summer book to be!
It was fun but serious and full of comedy, but also emotion. It’s really a unique book.
I am really looking forward to reading more by the author.
Thank you to the publishers for sending me a gifted copy.
A perfect summer read. I loved the Martha’s Vineyard setting and how it enhanced the search for Ben’s father plot. This truly was an opposites attract romance and it was endearing, but tough, to feel Sam’s insecurity over her dyslexia with Ben being an academic librarian. The scenes in which he read to her were so adorable and heartwarming , then and at one point very spicy 😂. I just loved the blossoming, cozy and romantic relationship that developed between them, gradually making it clear that they were meant to be despite their differences and issues.
What to expect:
- beach/summer vibes
- summer fling turned serious
- opposites attract
- quite spicy
- search for family/family issues
- dyslexia rep
I loved loved loved Summer Reading. I loved the setting in Martha’s Vineyard and I loved Sam and Ben’s characters and romance. I also enjoyed how Sam builds a relationship with her brother. It was the sweetest book for the summer. Just perfect
Thank you to Netgalley for this ARC. I’ve been really struggling to get back into reading and this was a gentle re-introduction to my romance shelf.
I loved this cute little summer read. If you’re looking for some easy reading with a little spice then this is the one for you!
Sam loses her chef job and returns home for the summer to watch over her teenage brother while her Dad and his wife take a vacation together.
Sam falls hard for the dreamy librarian Ben who absolutely loves all things reading and books. Sam just can’t ever see it working because she’s dyslexic and fears that will cause issues for Ben.
Sam manages to land a summer job catering in one of the bars and she serves food she was taught to cook by her late grandmother, despite being unable to read a recipe, Sam doesn’t struggle when it comes to food and making the most amazing food. Whilst doing this she manages to build a relationship with Tyler; it literally goes from non existent to a great sibling bond.
Ben definitely has his own issues but together with Sam there isn’t anything they can’t conquer, but what will happen when summer is over?
This book takes readers on a captivating journey, exploring the complexities of relationships and human nature. The author's prose is beautifully descriptive, creating vivid imagery that lingers in the mind. The well-developed characters feel real and relatable, going through personal growth and transformation. The thought-provoking themes make it a compelling read, and the emotional depth keeps you engaged until the end. Overall, it's a touching and memorable book worth reading.
I love books that are set on Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard as it makes me very nostalgic for Judy Blume! I enjoyed the story with Sam spending time with her much younger step brother for the first time. I liked the way their relationship was depicted. I loved hot librarian Ben and the ease at which he and Sam found each other, how he accepted and supported her dyslexia was really positive.
Would recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review.
this is a cute summer read, Sam the FMC has dyslexia and I loved reading about this and educating myself on it and I loved the fact that this was published in a way people with dyslexiaI can read. I really enjoyed the sibling dynamic between Sam and her younger half brother Tyler, I enjoyed the relationship between them more than I did the romance. I loved Ben but it felt like there wasn’t any lead up to the romance and I just couldn’t connect with them, but I did enjoy the cute moments they had together it just felt a bit like insta love. I really enjoyed Ben being a librarian as I haven’t read a book where the MMC is the reader and FMC isn’t so that was another thing that made the book good. The book was a cute, easy romance that I could see people enjoying beside the pool on holiday.
I loved this. Chef Samantha Gale returns to her childhood home on Martha's Vineyard to look after her teenage brother Tyler while her dad and stepmum have a holiday. Samantha is between jobs, having been passed over for an expected promotion. Sam carries the shame of being dyslexic and doesn't see her strengths because of this focus. Meeting the new chief librarian Ben seems an unlikely couple but as they get to know each other, he helps Samantha appreciate her strengths. Getting to know her 14 year old brother is another highlight of this summer of change. A lovely exploration of relationships - and turning stereotypes on their head. #netgalley #summerreading
This felt like the most random, all over the place read. To begin with, I enjoyed it - there was a fun meet cute, an fmc with dyslexia, Martha’s Vineyard beach vibes are always fun, and I loved the dynamic between Sam and her younger half brother. Beyond that though, it didn’t work for me. There were so many half plots crammed in, like the Emily’s health scare and her issues with her mother that should have either been more fleshed out and expanded on, or cut from the book. The same with Ben’s search for his father (not forgetting the horrific five minutes where Sam thought she and Ben might share the same father, like what was the need for that?) Also Bens mum is a cow and Bens reaction to the news at the end was shitty, I wouldn’t forgive him lol. So had potential but was disappointing for me.
A cute quirky love story that follows Sam as she spends a summer at Martha’s Vineyard at her families cottage. She went with the hope of resurrecting her career as a chef but finds out she has to chaperone her younger half brother and as he’s attending a robotics competition at the library she has to drop him off each day. Being dyslexic she hates the library but will the hot interim library director be able to change her mind? I enjoyed this novel especially how the characters interacted with each other and their relationships progressed. The only thing I found was it was slightly too long. I’d rate this book 3.5 stars. Thank you to NetGalley, Random House UK, Cornerstone and the author for the chance to review.
A great read, the story of Sam and Ben who meet when she is looking after her teenage brother for the summer. I loved both characters and wanted everything to work out for them. Looking forward to more books from this author
Summer Reading
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

She’s a chef who doesn’t do reading. He’s a librarian who doesn’t do romance. Will this summer be a recipe for disaster.. or love?
Firstly, I love love loved that the main character in this book was dyslexic. I feel like it’s a really underrepresented disability in literature, even when there is other neurodivergent representation out there. The book itself is also written in a dyslexic friendly way, regarding the font, lack of italics and no breaking up words onto the next line.
The main character, Sam, is obviously very self-conscious about her disability when she takes a liking to the hot librarian. But he is an absolute babe, a dream book boyfriend, a true gentleman. He doesn’t care about her dyslexia, and actively stands up for her in difficult situations surrounding it, and even reads to her 🥺🥺 there is also a pretty steamy sex scene where he’s reading smut to her whilst things are happening 👀🌶️
The whole reason Sam is on this island for the summer is to look after her younger half-brother while her dad and step-mum go away. They don’t have much of a relationship prior to this, so watching their sibling bond blossom over their time together is so friggin heartwarming and wholesome! I genuinely nearly cried several times just because of how cute the two of them were, and being someone who has a lot of half or step siblings, it hit me right in the feels 🥺
The only reason this wasn’t a 5 star read was because there was one plot device used near the end that isn’t my fave in romance books, and I felt it was a little unexplained in some areas. I wouldn’t have minded if we’d seen more of why this happened, but it just left me feeling frustrated as it all seemed to be for no reason 🤷🏼♀️ all very cryptic I know, but you’ll see what I mean when you read it.
This is the perfect summer romcom with wholesome familial love as well as some steamy romance 👀
Sam, a chef, agrees to come home to Marthas Vineyard to keep an eye on her teenage half brother whilst her Dad and step mum go travelling. Ben is is the local museum director and when Sam meets him there is a mutual attraction between them.
I love to learn new things in a story and this book delivered. It was great to have a neuro divergent character, Sam's dyslexia was explained well, along with ways to help with decoding writing and how dyslexia affects every day life. . Martha's Vineyard was described well from a local's perspective rather than a summer visitor. The step family dynamics were exp.ored well too.
This is a stand alone story and hopefully, Jess McKinlay will return there with more stories
Oh I loved this book. The relationships between siblings, friends and the 2 main characters was emotional, funny, and at times tear inducing. A lovely read to take my mind off the daily grind. Would definitely recommend 😊
Wow! I love this book! Summer Reading is an excellent title for this book as it’s perfect for reading in the summer. The characters are so believable and likeable. It’s set in Martha’s Vineyard which sounds idyllic and moves along at just the right pace, it’s neither long winded or rushed.
What I really enjoyed about it was the dyslexia aspect. I knew that dyslexic people were intelligent, but I had no idea how complex the condition is. Thanks to this book I’ve been educated.
I will definitely be reading more from this author!
This is a great summer romance with sweet characters, steamy scenes, and laugh-out-loud moments. I appreciated that it was our MC that was the bookworm, for a change, and the neurodiversity representation through Sam’s dyslexia. Ben was the Golden Retriever type: sweet, loyal, and reliable. Sam was a strong character and I loved reading how she built a relationship with her younger brother throughout the summer holiday. This was my first book from the author and I’ll definitely keep an eye out for any of her future works.
