Princess Fuzzypants here: In spite of the jeers and jabs from a cheeky squirrel, Katy loves to sing. Even if the squirrel thinks not, Katy wants to be on stage and sing for audiences other than the animals in her yard. When she becomes lost, a friendly street cat, who is very savvy, takes her under his paw and when they arrive on Broadway, Katy sees her chance and before she knows it, she is on stage singing for a very responsive audience. Katy is a hit.
When she returns home, she is no longer discouraged by the squirrel or any other naysayer. She is going to follow her dream. It is a charming story that teaches children to not let negative people determine your future. It is a good lesson. Five purrs and two paws up.
Thank you Netgalley and Crimson Dragon Publishing for access to this arc.
This is a cute book but rather simplistic and short. Katy the (apparently talking) Cat loves to sing despite having a nutso squirrel throw acorns at her and birds sneer at her singing efforts. One day Katy leaps down from a tree limb, over the fence, and ends up on the streets where she finds another cat who encourages her dreams. The very next day (I said it was short), Katy gets her wish and sings on stage before being taken home. The end. There really isn't much to it beyond don't let anyone deny you your dream. The illustrations are nice though. I'm not sure I'd be interested in reading any further Katy adventures. C
Katy is a kitty with a dream of singing on stage. Unfortunately her fellow neighbor animals don’t appreciate her habit of singing around them. One day she ventures out into the city and has a Broadway adventure. Very cute story and there are some fun facts about Broadway and New York at the end of the book.
Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC.
A delightful and inspiring story that will capture the hearts of young readers. The book's message of pursuing one's dreams and not giving up, despite setbacks and obstacles, is powerful and empowering. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the illustrations are engaging and fun. The book is also a great tool for starting conversations with children about topics like determination, perseverance, and following one's passions. An excellent choice for parents and educators looking for a fun and educational book for young readers.
Katy on Broadway is a lovely children’s story by Ella English. It’s told from the perspective of Katy the Cat, who loves to sing! The other animals tease and bully her and tell her she’s no good (especially Gerry).
When she gets lost in the big city she meets a new friend and they go on an adventure together, and have an amazing time.
This book has an important message to never let bullies discourage you from achieving your goals! I loved the colourful, vibrant illustrations. The cover looks great. I would definitely be drawn to it in a shop. My son really enjoyed this and said his favourite part was the green flamingo.
This book also has some interesting facts about Broadway and New York at the back which I thought was a nice idea.
I really enjoyed the adventure. Very engaging and thoughtful, in allowing the reader to form their own thoughts and optimize their own decisions. Great stuff!
A charming and heartwarming story that is perfect for young readers. Katy the cat, is a lovable and determined character that children will easily relate to. The story is beautifully written, and the illustrations are delightful. The book also teaches valuable lessons about perseverance and the importance of following your dreams, despite obstacles and doubts from others. This book is a great addition to any child's library
I read Katy On Broadway with my 3-Year-old daughter and 5-Year-old son, they both loved the book and were excited to find out whether Katy got to live her dream. My son found the naughty squirrel at the end very funny and he especially loved the Facts about New York and Broadway at the end. The book is fantastic for teaching children that they should always try to follow their dreams no matter what obstacles are put in their way and to accept that just because people say mean things doesn’t make them accurate. My daughter loved the fantastically illustrated pictures, this book will definitely become a bedtime favorite in our home! We loved how Katy was able to return home and prove the naughty garden creatures wrong, I would recommend this book to anyone with young children, especially if they have a passion for performing.
This is a brilliant book for young children with a really good story about a cat who wants to sing and follows her dreams. The drawings in the book are amazing and vibrant and left my jaw on the floor when I saw them to be honest, as they really present the feeling of the story in just a few images. They can definitely help a young child to understand what’s happening if they’re struggling. Any parent should get this for their child! 10/10! :)
This is a really great children’s book with fantastic illustrations that really capture innocence and excitement and are sure to keep any child engaged by looking at them. I love that this book is way bigger than most children’s books are that include things like colourful illustrations, and I think this is the perfect sort of story to get a young child into books and reading in general as it isn’t too difficult to read but it also isn’t a walk in the park the whole time for someone who doesn’t know many words. I loved the story about a cat who is scared of trying to sing on stage but tries anyway! 5/5 stars!
An enchanting and inspiring tale.
“Katy on Broadway” tells the story of Katy Cat, who loves to sing and has the dream of performing on stage one day, and become a big start, and she’ll live an adventure where she’ll make friends along the way and she’ll be able to achieve what she most dreamed of.
I really loved this story, it has a very powerful message about never stopping your fight to make them come true. It was really cute and taught a great lesson.
The illustrations that accompany the story compliment it beautifully.
This a wonderful read aloud to share with kids.
My review:
It was a cute story with a few plot holes. I liked the message, never give up on your dreams, ignore people who say you can't do things, etc etc. I thought the squirrel throwing the acorns at Katy was funny.
A few things I'd change though:
- 'spangly' isn't a word kids would easily recognize. 'sparkly' would have been better.
- When the cats were looking for food, it mentioned someone carrying wine and cheese. Not sure that wine should be mentioned in a children's book?
- My daughter actually noticed this first, at the beginning it was "Katy's dream to perform on stage", but then at the end she was "happy she got over her fear of performing on stage"... but earlier in the book no fears were ever mentioned.
My daughter's review (Age 12):
This book was okay, just a few things didn't make sense... At the end when Katy said that she'd gotten over her fear of being on stage, I was like "didn't she say that being on stage was her dream? She never has said that she was scared of it before..."
And I'd suggest putting sparkly instead of spangly at the start because I don't think kids will know what spangly meant (I had to look it up!!)
Otherwise, this book was good!
My son's review (Age 8):
It was boring. It was just about a cat on a stage. 3 stars. Or maybe 2.5, I don't know.
“Katy on Broadway” by Ella English is a heartwarming tale about a timid cat named Katy who overcomes her fears and discovers her passion for singing on Broadway. The book is written in a delightful and engaging style, with vivid descriptions that bring the story to life. The book is full of delightful characters, including Lilian, Weasel, and the elderly couple who come to Katy's aid
The characters, both human and animal, are lovable and endearing, making it easy for the reader to become invested in their journey.
The story is divided into short, easy-to-digest chapters that keep the pace moving along nicely. Each chapter presents a new challenge for Katy, and it is inspiring to watch her grow and develop throughout the book. The scenes set in the theater are particularly well-done, capturing the excitement and glamour of the Broadway stage.
Overall, “Katy on Broadway” is a charming and uplifting read that will leave a smile on your face. It is a wonderful reminder that it's never too late to discover your passions and that with determination and hard work, anything is possible. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages who love heartwarming stories about overcoming fears and pursuing dreams.
