Listening to this book left me very down just imagining the group of nasty characters that were in it. I can’t think of a single one who had any redeeming features.
There were twists that seemed unrealistic and the police behaved in the most unlikely and unrealistic way I got tired of trying to follow it all

The twists and turns in The Marriage Counselor continue all the way to the end. The reader will be gripped by the tale and sympathize with Adele. Adele finds out her husband Patrick is missing. Then she is shocked to find out he has been having affairs. Next a women he has been seeing is dead. Of course she would be the prime suspect. The strangest part is all his coworkers never knew he was married. The book has many different aspects that keeps the readers interest.

Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for the opportunity. Available April 24, 2023.

Wow, what a disappointment. The plot was all over the place. It seemed to jump around and not in a clever way. The twist was just eye rolling. Not one character was likeable. I struggled.

My first book by Dea and I really enjoyed it.
There were plenty of twists I didn't expect at all and it is exactly what I am looking for when checken on for a domestic thrilling story!

This story features Adele who is a counselor who is married to Patrick. When Patrick turns up missing she finds out secrets Patrick has been keeping. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was fabulous. The first half of the book was very good and I was trying to figure out the twists. Then suddenly it just fell kinda flat and unbelievable. As the story continued it started to become predictable and lost the spark I felt in the beginning.
That being said, It was a very good listen though because the narrator really kept it interesting. Audio was around 7 hours.

I am rating 3 stars for being an average story I enjoyed listening to. #TheMarriageCounselor #NetGalley

Though the plot of this story was very different, this book had a similar feel to The Holiday Home which I also listened to this week. Not too long of a story, but captivating and compelling of a listen. Adele realizes her husband is missing, but when she starts to investigate, she finds out that he hasn’t told any of his colleagues and friends about her. This story was so twisty and unexpected…I never quite knew what was going to happen next. And I absolutely did not guess the ending! This made for a great listen!

I appear to be on a run of good reads. This book has some amazing twists and turns. Don’t assume you know what’s what. You are wrong! If you are looking for a slightly creepy and tense page turner, this is the one to read

2.5 ⭐️ rounded up to 3 because the narrator was fantastic.

Thank you NetGalley & Bookouture Audio for an advance audio copy of this book.

This was a quick moving thriller that quickly pulled me in but somehow managed to be both predictable and confusing at the same time again. There were literally no likeable characters and the reactions of people especially the cops didn’t make a lot of sense. Plot wise it often felt like we were missing details and I actually questioned several times if I’d accidentally skipped parts.

All in all this book had potential but it just didn’t deliver.

The Marriage Counselor by Dea Poirier was a captivating psychological thriller that kept me at the edge of my seat until the very end. The story starts off with a marriage counsellor discovering a huge secret about her own husband and sets off an unexpected twist of events.

The story expertly blended thriller and mystery genres with a side of heartbreak as the marriage counsellor navigates the truths, secrets and lies of her husband's double life. There are lots of suspenseful moments, where the tension ramps up in a way that kept me engaged throughout. The big jaw-dropping twist near the end adds a nice resolution that had me going "wow" in awe.

The Marriage Counselor is a gripping, highly recommended read for fans of suspense and thrillers with an unpredictable twist. It was an absolute pleasure to read this compelling book and I am excited to see what Dea Poirier has in store for us next!

This book was just ok for me. The title wasn't "bad" per-say but it didn't feel like it fit. The book took some weird twists and turns that I thought were a stretch. It wasn't a bad story but definitely not in my top picks.

This is one of those books where you spend the whole book waiting for the other shoe to drop, BUT it isn't quite the shoe you were expecting to drop. If you want a book with a perfect and always trustworthy main character, then this isn't the book for you. She's not perfect and not always honest (like all of the real people you know). Because this book has a pretty fast pace and small, but important details that a lot of people seem to miss, I'd recommend reading it all in one sitting, so you don't get confused and miss things that are important to understanding what's going on with everyone.

A marriage counsellor with a far from perfect marriage. This was a twisty turny thriller, just as I wanted. Started off so strong, I got a little lost in the middle but I’m putting that down to my brain fog. But I was wrong with the ending and I always love that. Just when I thought I had it cracked in cane the twist, I love it when that happens. Adele is a relatable protagonist for the majority of the story. Where is her husband? What the hell has he done? Hugely enjoyable. Look out for it.

Stephanie cannon narrated this really well, and added to the tension of the tale.

Thank you to NetGalley and bookature audio for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.

My synopsis: Adele is a marriage counselor that finds out her husband, Patrick, is missing. While searching for clues to where he could have gone, she finds out more secrets that he's kept from her. None of his coworkers knew he was married...a package arrived at the house with baby clothes, but they're not expecting...it seems like he's been living a double life and she didn't see any of the signs until the cops came knocking on their door.

I'm a sucker for a good domestic thriller and this was it. I rate it a 4 star because the ending felt rushed. There didn't seem to be a clear connection from crime to culprit. However, I was very surprised with the plot twist because I definitely didn't see that coming. It is a fast pace reading with lots of action thrown in.

I was really looking forward to reading this one... but unfortunately it was not for me. It was confusing, lacking character development and I felt like I should have read the first book in the series before this... but there isn't one. I have a feeling maybe important pieces were edited out? Bummer!

Three stars from me means that I believe the author achieved their aims, and it's a good book, but that I personally didn't fall in love with it.

In this case, I just really disliked the lead character, Adele, and as it is a first-person narrative that meant I didn't have the level of engagement that you would have if you do like her. In particular, I just didn't understand why she became a counsellor in the first place. I mean, I know she said her parents were famous TV counsellors, but I didn't think counselling was a career that tended to run through the generations, like nursing or being a medical doctor or a lawyer. In fact, everyone I have ever known whose parents are in that line of work wanted to do something completely different - they saw how emotionally demanding it was and chose something else. Maybe that's just the people I know.

Be that as it may, Adele just seemed such a terrible fit for her chosen profession. She was so disinterested in other people, and she also didn't seem 100% adult in her other life choices. There was no mention of her having an adviser, and I thought everyone who worked with patients' mental health were ethically compelled to have counsellors themselves to help them process the emotions that are inevitable to feel when dealing with other people's unhappiness day in and day out.

However, I'm sure that if you don't take against Adele the way I did, you will really enjoy this book. There's a final twist which, although expected by the time I reached it, did send shivers down my spine.

Will definitely look out for more novels by Dea Poirier.

Thank you NetGalley andDea Poirier for this eAudio ARC. I really loved this audio book at first and could not stop listening. About 3/4 through the book, I started getting confused and lost. I’m not sure if some of the twists were lost in the audio piece and would have been better if I were reading on my own. I just wish the ending was a little clearer!

Uhmm... Predictable plot and twist.
But since I listened to the audiobook, I will give it 3.5 stars, rounded up to 4 stars.

When I listened to the story of this book, it kept bringing me a sense of DEJAVU🧙‍♀️, like the characters, the plot, and the background, i have seen it somewhere before 🤔 (pretend to think).

Well, this book is indeed a perfect alternate for fans of "The Perfect Marriage," it has quite a same vibe.

As far as I've read books from every genre, whenever the main character is played as a psychologist thing (counselor, sex psychologist, child psychologist, etc.), it will never end up well....literally, that character is the most fucked one. ALWAYS.  No matter what genres am in is all same.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🔊:
Narrated by : Stephanie Cannon
Length of audio: 7h 42m
I did enjoy a lot as I listened to the audiobook; the narrator is good at showing the emotions each character had; also, her pronunciation, tone, and pace are perfecto, so it's easy to hear and catch up. She is the main reason why I rounded up to 4 stars instead of giving it 3 stars. If I read this story as an e-book, then it would be a very different story.
Okay👌.

MY THOUGHTS:
•Actually, I don't really like all of the characters in this book. Even the main character herself (Adele) she is so childish.

•I like how the author made our FMC (Adele) as a psychologist noticed every single movement that the other characters make when they're lying or hiding something.

•It's better if I get some POV from Patrick, even if it's just a glimpse of him. It will add more tension to the story.

•Some words keep repeating over and over. I felt i'm hearing same thing.  When I think it could be changed into the other expression, even though the meaning is same. However, it would sound different.

•Truth be told, I might just give it 4 stars without the rounded part IF you delete all of Cameron's dialogue with Adele. because that sounds bad and makes me cringe. Jesus, I wanted to crawl out of my body whenever I heard his dialogue with Adele.

•Again, since I listened to the audiobook, except from Adele, all of the female characters sounded so bitchy. I mean, why did they sound bitchy? Yeah, I get that they're bitches at some point, but you know that not all bitches sound bitchy. So that's a bit annoying.

•Did everyone have to die? Cz everyone around Adele keeps getting killed. There were some things that needed further explanation. Like how the killer killed them and why?.

•And The Ending was ☠️👍🏻. For me, it's predictable, but for people out there who're new to this genre, I bet you would like this.

WHAT I REALLY LIKE:
-The audibook. The narrator did such a great job. Without her this book go staright to 3 stars, round applause for Stephanie Cannon👏👏👏. She saved the day.

I really enjoy a good twist and this book had several! Thank you NetGalley & Bookouture Audio for allowing me the opportunity to listen to this book by Dea Poirer about a marriage counselor who's husband goes missing, who's parents are killed when she's 13 and who's in a marriage with a man who doesn't tell his employer he's even married. But, it turns out that's just the smallest of lies in this book. Lots of people end up dead, but the twists of who, and why all come out in the last sentence of the book. I enjoyed this fast paced thriller.

This book flowed well and kept my interest. The audiobook was done well and that helped with some of the slower parts. I do feel like it could have been about 50 pages shorter. It dragged a bit near the end. Then the last chapter the twist came. I recommend this book.

Unfortunately, this one was a miss for me. I'm not sure what happened, and lost the ability to care pretty early on. The narrator was good, but the story and characters didn't work for me.
