I’ve read several books by Poston, and I absolutely loved Dead Romantics, so I’m sad I didn’t enjoy this one.
The plot idea was really cool, but it just felt a bit flat to me.
It won’t put me off Poston’s future books. This one just didn’t hit how I had hoped.
I cried a lot and smiled a lot while reading this one. I love second chances and books that have some kind of past and present aspects so this definitely hooked me.
I love the topics and discussions of change and how life changes constantly so trying to navigate that switch can be daunting but also rewarding.
Iwan and Clementine were lovely to read about and I would love to see more of them in the future. I love the family aspects and the mentions of loved ones who have passed but have influenced the main characters in the present
Overall this was a sweet story with bittersweet moments.
Thank you NetGalley and HQ (Harper Collins UK) for the eARC.
I have no doubts that this is one of those reading experiences I will remember seven years from now - probably longer still. I'd love to go back and do it all over again for the first time.
I laughed, I cried, and I got angry all in the space of one day because once I got into this book, I didn't stop reading until the end. I devoured it. A new favourite for sure!
I adored Clementine and Iwan's journey together. Every page was stunningly written and left me with a lot of food for thought, alongside a craving for lemon pie...
If you love romance and book experiences that simply transport you away from life for a few hours, you HAVE to read this.
Thanks to Netgalley & HQ for this digital arc in return for an honest review.
5⭐ - Michelin if Iwan would like?
**trigger warning - suicide & grief.
With a sprinkling of magical realism, a dash of spice, a teaspoon of heartache and a healthy dose of well written prose, this book is set to delight. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend to any reader of romance novels.
I would like to thank netgalley and HQ for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Wonderful.
Thank you Netgalley and HQ for a copy of this digital ARC.
I am a sucker for time travel stories. This story was beautiful, heart-wrenching, and incredibly well-written. It was memorable and I really didn’t want it to end. It was so unique and magical, I enjoyed this book from start to finish. The magical realism in this book was executed perfectly. Easy 5 stars, in my opinion
TW: suicide (off-page)
4.5 stars
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for an e-ARC edition to review. All thoughts are my own.
I devoured this. As a fan of The Dead Romantics, I was eager to see how Ashley Poston would create yet another unconventional romance scenario within The Seven-Year Slip. And I have to say, this was well worth the wait!
The concept of Clementine's inherited apartment was so well done. I enjoyed the idea of the magic within the place sending someone back in time seven years. I liked that Clementine wasn't the first one to have her own experience with it and yet struggled to understand why the universe - or really, her Aunt's kooky apartment - was testing her with the sudden time swap. But her character development got to shine because of her experiences with the younger and more optimistic Iwan. I enjoyed the instant banter and connection between her and the strange young man who showed up right when she didn't want distractions, and how that correlated to her time in the present and ultimately helped her heal from the loss of her beloved Aunt. I also appreciated how this fuelled the rediscovery of her artistic passion, and how Iwan's optimism made her realise just how stuck she was in her current lifestyle. One of my favourite things about this book, and about Ashley Poston as an author, is that the time needed to grow as a person throughout is well-crafted into the storyline. The Clementine we met at the start of The Seven-Year Slip undergoes a lot of change to her rigid thinking and way of living, and this is made possible by the fantastic attention to her emotional needs.
Iwan is a wonderful MMC, and I adored the nickname that he gave her. It was interesting to discover just how woven into her life he was without her realising it. How much she shaped his world over such a short period of time spent together thanks to the apartment's magic. I also liked his growth and the struggles that were shared. We get to meet a young man and the older version of him in such a clever way that I'm still in awe thinking about this book, and how NOT to spoil it too much in this review because I just want to gush about it!
I liked the romance between Clementine and Iwan, although I was a little apprehensive at first when I realised just how quickly some things were moving along in the beginning. Thankfully, due to well-placed angst and obstacles, the worry of instalove taking this story off the path for me was minimised. The tension is built naturally, and I liked the level of spice too. Since the emotional connection between the pair was so well developed, it was easy to root for them, even with how hard it was to swap between past and present Iwan for Clementine.
I did find the final resolution to be a bit dragged out, and some moments of their connection had me thinking outside of the happy, warm hug vibes of this book, but otherwise, this is a solid read, especially for those who love character connection done right. I cannot wait to read what Poston brews up next.
Beautiful, emotional, funny, and romantic. This story is everything. It gives me The Lakehouse House vibes- loosely. Well written and engaging. A unique premise that is well executed. Overall a solid read.
I loved this book, and all the whimsy and magic the story holds. Clementine and Iwan were a wonderful star-crossed-ish pair, and I really enjoyed their journey.
I also found the story line about living your life while in the thick of grief after the death of a loved one to be very touching.
The few glimpses of Florence and Ben from The Dead Romantics were fun, too!! I liked knowing the two stories were a part of the same bookish universe.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this e-ARC. This is my honest review.
“Soft candlelight, a plate of cheese, and a good wine. A lemon pie that makes your teeth curl in delight. Or a piece of chocolate at the end of the night, soft and simple. Romance.”
Successful book publicist Clementine is about to reach her dream promotion, when she comes home to find a stranger in her apartment. A kind, caring, romantic chef that she could easily fall in love with. Except she quickly realizes that he lives seven years in the past, and she’s stuck seven years in the future. Her dearly departed aunt always warned her that this apartment could blur time unexpectedly, but can Clem figure out her love life in time?
I adored Ashley Poston’s The Dead Romantics, so I was completely thrilled to get my hands on The Seven Year Slip. Like its predecessor, this book has an almost magical way of sweeping you up into the romance, and it’s absolutely beautiful!
Although it dealt with some heavy topics of death and grief, they were handled in such a thoughtful and tender way that it never felt heavy to me at all. Clementine and Iwan were both such lovable characters, and I was delighted to follow along in their journey of growth and discovery. I was cheering them on so hard to somehow find themselves and each other in time!
The Seven Year Slip releases today! If you enjoy a sweet, beautiful, thought-provoking romance with a touch of magic, make sure to grab your copy and to always, always chase the moon!

Special thanks to Netgalley, Ashley Poston, and HQ publishing for sharing an ARC with me in exchange for my honest review.
First off, I LOVED The Dead Romantics, her previous novel so I honestly didn;t think this one would compare. But she did it again! Her novels are filled with love, laughter, heartache and all the emotions in between. Loved the time travel romance aspect of this book and the characters were woven beautifully throughout the story.
Thank you to NetGalley for my free copy for my honest review. I can't recommend this one enough!
"The love stays. The love always stays, and so do we."
Today we talk about The Seven Year Slip, the brand new adult book by Ashley Poston, author of The Dead Romantics (which I had loved so much)!
If in The Dead Romantics the story was a sort of paranormal romance with a ghost, in this case the novel is about time travel, about a magical apartment that goes back and forth 7 years in time.
In this magical apartment inherited from her aunt, lives Clementine (aka Lemon) a publisher always at work who no longer believes in love until one evening when she returns from work she finds a charming boy in the kitchen, Iwan, and soon realizes that he is not in the wrong place, it is Clementine who magically returned 7 years back in the past.
Iwan is an aspiring chef who dreams of opening his own restaurant to make his grandfather proud and in the meantime he cooks delicious dishes every night including his famous lemon cake!
Clementine desperately tries to find Iwan even in the present and soon she discovers that the present version of Iwan is closer than she expected!
This book was truly like a soft and cute hug! I loved the short chapters, the bond between Clementine and her aunt, how the grief was treated (TW), every delicious dish cooked by Iwan, the New York setting, the summer vibes and of course the romance, but I warn you that in this book you won't find anything spicy, indeed the romance focuses very much on the relationship between the two characters and on their growth and above all on the elaboration of Clememetine's grief and the rediscovery of love!
It's a really complex story, cute, cosy, sweet and bitter... I highly recommend it!!
Thanks to Netgalley and HQstories for providing me with this ARC!
After loving ‘The dead romantics’ by Ashley, I couldn’t wait to read her next book and was lucky enough to be accepted to read an arc. This is a book that does feature a few heavy topics including grief and suicide. Ashley has written about these in such a compassionate way which made me feel even more respect for her as an author.
The time travelling troupe in this book works so well and there is a sense of magic which really works with the theme of its the right place, even the right person but the wrong timing. This is such an easy read which draws you in to find out more about Clementine, her aunt and also Iwan. I love how everything comes full circle in how clementine and Iwan are connected in more than one way (don’t want to spoil it !)
Ashley Poston is back with another wonderful romance-with-a-twist after the success of The Dead Romantics, a love story that featured many more ghosts than you'd expect. This time Poston takes on time travel - of a sort - that sends Clementine West's life into a tailspin.
Clementine, our protagonist, has thrown herself into her work as she reels from a tragic and recent loss. A note from Poston at the back of the book reveals that she herself went through something similar and it shows - she writes the force of grief and the awfulness of trying to bury it with grace and perceptiveness. It's an impressive feat, then, that the novel also manages to be light-hearted and completely swoony.
Clementine has inherited her aunt's apartment - an apartment that just happens to swing between two timelines: our present day, and 7 years ago. When Clementine discovers this, it's because a man - adorable, handsome, friendly Iwan - materialises in her apartment. The two fall for one another - quickly, but it's believeable due to their excellent chemistry - only for Clementine to realise that Iwan - her Iwan - lives 7 years in the past. It's quite an ambitious concept for a romance novel - as was The Dead Romantics! - and once again Poston nails it.
This novel is beautiful, clever and heartfelt. The time-slip is thought through (not always the case in these types of books *eyes emoji*) and the plot is intricate yet easy to follow. I inhaled this one at a difficult time - much of it read in hospital waiting rooms - and it was a lovely heart-warmer.
The side characters, in general, were fun and added humour to the novels' darker moments, and Clementine's beloved Aunt Analea's presence looms large over the novel. Despite being deceased in the current narrative, Analea feels wholly present and a fully-formed and larger than life character, and your heart breaks for Clementine losing her. There's a beautiful, heartbreaking moment between the two towards the novel's end that will stay with me for a long time. Another tiny detail I loved was the nods Poston added in to her previous novel - seeing these characters made my heart swell.
The Seven Year Slip is a beautiful, swoony summer read with more than a touch of magic. Sign me up to the Ashley Poston extended universe, folks, because I will read anything she writes from here on out.
Magical realism with a hint of romance? I recommend this book:
Magical Apartment - Clementine’s aunt lives in an apartment, which she claims is magical. It supposedly travels 7 years into the past or future, but only if you stay in the apartment itself.
Aunt gone - But when Clementine’s aunt is no longer alive, she passes the apartment to her.
2 Rules - and there are only 2 rules. Take off your shoes in the apartment, and don’t fall in love.
Mysterious Man - Can she follow the rules when a mysterious man shows up in her apartment 7 years in the past?
For those of you who have read The Dead Romantics, this book will give you the same type of feels. The magical realism is given in a way that no one questions if it's possible. Clementine and Iwan both are discovering what they want, and quite honestly the way they discover it is quite beautiful. I really thought this book was so lovely and there is actually a few little twists in it that I loved as well.
As soon as I read the words 'the problem is I'm broken' (I'm paraphrasing slightly), I rage quit. If there's not another one of these books published for another century, it will still be too soon. Broken protagonist - absolutely fine, but there is absolutely no need, for all that is good and holy in actually decent writing, that it needs to be put like that. I just...in this genre, it is such a toss up whether the writing is actually going to be good and it's not here. I had a similar issue with 'The Dead Romantics' (also the audiobook narrator was getting heavily on my nerves) and it seems to be a me thing rather than a 'maybe it's just this book' thing. DNF.
I knew this book would ruin my life from the very first page and oh boy was I so happy to be right. The premise is so unique and Poston’s writing is so magical - I don’t think I have ever captured so many quotes from a single book before like this.
All of the little references to last and present timelines had me giggling and kicking my feet, (im)patiently waiting for everything to get revealed. Everything was connected so well, I wish it was longer (or maybe I wish I didn’t read it so fast) so I could live in this book for a while more.
The amount of references to so many of my favorite things this book had me questioning whether I accidentally met Poston at a magical apartment seven years ago and she wrote this one for me. It’s so hard for me to describe what this book meant to me but I am so grateful to know it exists in the world for everyone who might relate to this precious story about time, and timing, and love, to enjoy.

I LOVED this book. I had forgotten since reading The Dead Romantics last year, how much I had fallen in love with AP’s writing style. Beautiful descriptions and imagery, character and world building had wrapped up in the story very, very quickly. I loved the build up of Clementine and Iwan’s whirlwind romance, their banter and conversations felt very natural - then the introduction of present day Iwan had me !!! I would say that towards the end I felt the development of their present day relationship felt too quick, I would have liked to sit with it for a little longer before declarations of love - the only reason this isn’t a 5 star review.
I do think it’s important to say there is lots of discussion throughout the book and then later, suicide. The latter of which could be considered a spoiler but I wouldn’t want anyone to be caught out by it, hence me leaving it un-spoiler tagged.
tldr; beautiful, fun, charming!
The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston is the most beautiful contemporary novel that I absolutely loved. I savored every word.
This is a novel about love – but it is not your conventional tale. Ashley Poston has created a unique story that is so very beautiful and will warm your heart.
Love happens in very different circumstances. We see a variety of love within the novel – between couples, family members and friendships. Love unites and binds down the years. There are some truly heartwarming moments as dialogue bounces between the characters.
When love leaves, it hurts. Sometimes love is torn apart through circumstances and sometimes through death. “Sometimes the people you love don’t leave you with goodbyes – they just leave.” There is raw grief on display within the novel.
Names are important. Nicknames form a close bond. As friendships develop, we delight in hearing the pet names for each other.
Characters are chasing dreams. “You will be happiest when you are on your own adventure.” We need to make sure our dreams are our own and not for someone else. We must not let ambition change us and always remember our roots.
I thoroughly loved The Seven Year Slip. I could not get enough of it. It was a beautiful read. I will leave you with Ashley Poston’s beautiful words from her book:
“Sometimes the people you love left you halfway through a story. Sometimes they left without goodbye. And, sometimes, they stayed around in little ways.”
I received a free copy from the publishers. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
This was such an interesting read! I found myself so engrossed in the story, the characters had such incredible arcs, and I can't wait to follow this author's journey!
