DNF at 35%. This is a tough one. I loved The Dead Romantics so much and came into this so excited and ready to love it! And I’m not sure what happened - I can’t put my finger on why this wasn’t working for me. But when I put it down, I wouldn’t want to pick it up. I usually read right before going to sleep and I would find myself choosing to play on my phone or just lay there and think about things because I didn’t want to get back to the book and for me that’s generally a sign it isn’t working. Maybe I will try this again in the future but for now it’s not for me. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance reading copy.
"It's never a matter of time, but a matter of timing."
I absolutely loved this book! It made me smile, it made me swoon and it made me cry. Fate, destiny, kismet; whatever you wish to call it, this is what this book is about.
The time travel scenario worked - it was cleverly executed. The characters; Clementine AKA Lemon and Iwan were fantastically written - Poston brought out their vulnerabilities; there was a rawness to their characters.
The Seven Year Slip is definitely a book that leaves you with a lasting impact, a book that you will think about endlessly after reading it and a book that you would gladly reread.
One of my absolute favourites of the year. And because of that, I am struggling to find the words to tell you why. Whimsical. Romantic. Ethereal. A story with a full-circle ending that'll leave you on cloud nine!
Apartment B4 is an anomaly. Left to Clementine by her late aunt, it has the ability to bend time when its residents least expect. Slipping through time—seven years forward, seven years back— Clementine meets the effervescent Iwan within its walls. But her aunt always warned her about falling in love ...
Ashley Poston has an extraordinary way with words. This story swept me away! It's best to go in knowing little—but I will say, the parallel moments between Clementine and Iwan were absolutely dreamy. And so angsty!
My heart still aches over lemon pie. If you've read this, you know.
I loved the way grief was woven in, too. The inevitable sadness that it brings while also holding onto the love and memories that remain.
Everything about this story was perfection.
I really enjoyed the concept of The Seven Year Slip. I haven't read Poston's adult romance debut, but from what I can tell everyone is loving her switch to this genre. I'm definitely keen to pick up The Dead Romantics after reading this one, because I found myself really enjoying Poston's little twist that she put on the genre.
I really enjoyed reading about Clementine as she interacted with Iwan, a man who was literally existing in the past. Seeing Clementine deal with her struggles and learn to open herself up again after losing her aunt and her best friend.
I wasn't expecting this book to deal so much with grief, but that was one of the major topics. I was very impressed with how Poston handled it, and I even shed some tears towards the end because it was just so lovely.
I also found myself relating to Clementine in terms of her attitude towards her work and career, so it has given me a lot to thing about in that regard too.
Overall, I'm really pleased to have read The Seven Year Slip and I'm going to have to go and get my hands on The Dead Romantics now!
Another amazing read from Ashley Poston!
I absolutely loved The Dead Romantics and was super excited to hear about this one,
Ashley has a lovely writing style and creates some really unique plots.
I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more from her in the future
The Dead Romantics was one of my top reads of last year, so The Seven Year Slip went immediately on my TBR. So excited when I got accepted for an e-Arc through NetGalley, so HUGE thanks to NetGalley, Ashley Poston and HQ Stories for a chance to read early in exchange for an independent review!!
The Seven Year Slip was a romance with some fantasy elements thrown in (which seems to be Poston's jam). Clementine is a bit of a workaholic (she works in publicity for a publishing house), except when she's off travelling with her Aunt. The book opens six months after her Aunt has died, as Clementine moves into the flat she was bequeathed in the will. Imagine her surprise when she enters to find a stranger has moved in for the summer! Oh.....and she's slipped seven years in the past!
Her Aunt told her childhood stories of the way time in the flat slips backward 7 years, but she wrote it off as fantasy, until the day she meets Iwan and realises the truth!
The book jumps between the past and the present as Clementine does, and we soon realise that sometimes the past does catch up to you!
Heavy on the romance, but with a touch of the fantastical, this book should appeal to lovers of both, and has cemented Poston as one of my must buy authors.
Thank you NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this book ahead of it's release!
I was a huge fan of The Dead Romantics and so excited to read Ashley Poston's latest work! And this book did not disappoint! Although I didn't enjoy it as much as The Dead Romantics, I found this book to be equally as delightful, funny, and surprising. It's similar also in that it is not just a love story. It's not just a romance novel. There are lessons to be learned, mysterious elements, and lots of emotions.
I really enjoyed The Dead Romantics by Ashley Poston so was super excited to be approved this ARC, I really enjoyed this book and it was a unique plot that was executed super well. I adore Ashley's writing style. Cant wait to read her future books.
.
This story is about Clementine who moves into her late aunt’s apartment. Clementine’s aunt always told her that the apartment was magical but Clementine always thought that they were just stories her aunt made up to entertain her. That is until Iwan turns up. Iwan is seven years in the past.
I thought that this was okay. I just wasn’t convinced about the romance between the two characters. I also felt that the story was a bit predictable.
I liked Dead Romantics and was excited to get this book. While it took me a little awhile to get hooked, once I did, I enjoyed it. The predictable ending felt a little rushed, but overall a good read that I would recommend.
Ever since The Dead Romantics, I've been wanting another adult romance by Ashley Poston and she released The Seven Year Slip this year! My prayers were heard. I absolutely loved The Seven Year Slip and totally sped through the entire book in one day. I had to know if Iwan remembered his Lemon after seven years.
Clementine's late aunt left her the apartment in which she left two rules. One, always take of your shoes. Two, never fall in love. Clementine knew her aunt as a lover of life and a great storyteller. She wasn't expecting to find a man standing in the kitchen one day and then her falling in love. However, the man comes and goes. In a blink of an eye, seven years would pass and she would remember him as Iwan, an aspiring chef. Would he remember her, though? Or is she the strange woman she appeared whenever she want in the apartment?
I had a wonderful time unravelling their romance. Clementine and Iwan will finally meet after seven years. Clementine as an overworked book publicist who recently lost her beloved aunt and Iwan as a celebrated chef looking for a publishing firm for his cookbook. However, it seems like they are both a little lost in life. Clementine is grieving the lost of her aunt who showed her the beauty of life while Iwan's dream of opening a homey restaurant is different now.
Since time in this book isn't linear, the chapters of them in the past was some of my favorites. Even though there weren't many, it showed how much their presence mattered to one another. Clementine and Iwan bonded on the most fundamental level. Their romance was pure and sweet. Them meeting seven years later was pretty interesting as well. To Clementine it was just yesterday, but for Iwan, it was seven years ago.
Overall, I couldn't stop reading. Ashley Poston got me addicted right from the start. Clementine's journey with grief was heartbreaking but she had people supporting her every step of the way and the romance with Iwan was simply beautiful.
I inhaled The Seven Year Slip in one evening - a gorgeously written, effortlessly romantic summer read! This was a highly anticipated title for me after reading The Dead Romantics last year, and it did not disappoint. Ashley Poston manages to sprinkle supernatural elements into romantic comedies in such a fun and seamless way. I loved every single character, and truly believed in the chemistry between Clementine and Iwan. I cannot wait to discuss this with everyone once it's released!
I absolutely loved this, I flew through it in pretty much one sitting because I was so caught up in Clementine and Iwan and the magic of this love story.
🍋Whimsical and magical
🍋time slip
🍋friends to lovers
🍋second chance romance
🍋banter
Postons books just keep getting better and better! Magical, passionate and romantic and 100% worth the read!
I can't believe I'm saying this but I love Ash Poston 's adult books more than her YA(p.s I love Geekrella) and I think I don't say this enough but Ash is one of my favourite authors.
We have a magical element included in The seven year slip like how we'd in The dead romantics.
Clementine inherited her late aunt's magical apartment(it can take you seven years ahead and backwards) after she passed away where she got to meet a handsome wannabe chef, Iwan. The thing is the apartment time travelled to 7 years back when her aunt is still alive and the relationship with Iwan is something that won't work.
Meeting right person at the wrong time. When she finally meets her in her own timeline, he isn't the same person.
What I loved?
✨ The romance!! I could feel so much love between the main characters though it felt more like women's fiction. We get to see her relationship with aunt, her trying to find what she actually likes and hanging out with friends.
✨ Clementine - She's such a strong character and the way she dealt things are realistic. I love her relationship with her aunt and friends. She made me want to travel the world and paint.
✨ Iwan - I loved this man. He was everything one could look for in a love story. Hot Stanger who has tattoo and could cook. What a combo!!
Hero cooking for the heroine is one of my favourite things and this has it.
✨ I loved how Iwan called her 'lemon' (C-lemon-tine)
✨ Two pigeons Mother and Fu¢k€r - the names, they didn't do much but I kinda liked them in a way I can't explain why.
✨ Chapter titles (AP, Please continue to have them in every book)
I don't know how AP handles grief and makes the characters deal with them in such a beautiful way but she does. Highly recommend it! ❤️
TW: suicide, death, grief
Thank you Berkley for the gifted copy via Netgalley.
Even more enjoyable than Dead Romantics, Poston's writing style is more assured with Seven Year Slip and full of the elements I loved so much about the last book- her likeable characters, magical realism and plot that tracks along at a easy pace all work really well in this book I finished in a day. I particularly liked how the love affair between Iwan and Clementine wasn't the total focus of the story, it supplemented what turned out to be a satisfying plot of her discovering her own path in life. Could have been very cheesy but it just really gave me joy, even in the heart wrenching parts where it handles the grief of losing a loved one.
It is incredibly satisfying to encounter one of those novels that scatters pieces of a puzzle both big and small throughout its narrative, and the true joy of reading it is to discover how those pieces eventually fit together. This is definitely in that category. Fantastical premise aside, this is a story about the necessity and heartbreak of change, of moving on in life but still remembering your dreams regardless of what everyday existence throws at you. Both main characters struggle with this, although the time slip imposed on them adds a bittersweet extra dimension for Clementine in particular. Filled with well-realised characters both major and minor (including a couple of invasive pigeons and an apartment that feels like a character in itself), this is a delightful novel that kept me enthralled from start to finish.
This is a wonderfully timey whimsy, tipsy turvey book that tells the story of Lemon and how she copes with the loss, her fear of change, finding what makes her happy and falling in love. This story was funny, insightful and desperately sad in parts. The author did a great job of conveying Clementine’s sense of loss mixed with anger, sadness and the loneliness of her grief. There were some great supporting characters in Drew, Fern, some rowdy pigeons, the apartment and especially Analea whose larger than life presence flowed through the story.
At the heart of the book was the twisty love story between Clementine and Iwan. I loved their interactions past, present and otherwise. They bounced off each other in a lovely way filled with depth, and humour. The connection between them played a large part in Clementine’s journey towards understanding what she wanted for herself and in helping Iwan remember parts of himself as well. The moment she fell was described perfectly!! A thoroughly enjoyable read (5 ⭐️)
Such a unique book, I loved the plot, and oh my god the characters we're so amazing!! I definitely will be recommending it!!
Rating: 3.5/5
What I liked:
• Clementine and Iwan’s sweet, easy-going interactions.
• The way in which both characters spoke about their passions (especially Iwan in his poetic way).
• The joy in the memories of Analea and the way she lived life.
• The inspiring messages within the story.
The Seven Year Slip was a beautiful story about love and life in equal parts, all of which became emotional but inspiring. While it took me a while to fully invest in the story, I loved the messages and scenes.
Clementine is a character I think many can relate to in terms of her grief and the questions it brings. Iwan bought a lot of light to the book with his passion for cooking and his sweet, lighthearted interactions with Clementine. They made for a lovely couple and it was a joy following their relationship. That being said, I’m not a fan of insta-love, and that sums up the beginning of the couple, so I would have liked a few more meetings between the two rather than the initial weekend. However, this is just personal preference, and fans of the insta-love trope will adore this.
There were times it felt quite repetitive, but some of those times I think were there to reiterate the focal point of the plot. It was an interesting take on magical realism and the apartment felt like a main character in some ways.
The way Poston wrote about grief and life itself was stunning. The words just flowed perfectly and poetically. Analea’s love for life and being in the moment shone through the book and was so inspiring. It truly had me reflecting on my personal life and questioning a lot.
There were so many messages hidden within and it was impossible not to give each one so much thought. It’s a book that will stay with me for a very long time and will be purchasing once released, just so I can refer back to the stunning quotes, essence and spirit it provided.
Thank you NetGalley, Ashley Poston and Berkley for accepting me as an arc reader in exchange for an honest review.
I read The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston on the plane and while I enjoyed it, it didn't blow me away. Poston has a good writing style that sucks you in and she utilises magical elements really well to move a story along. I loved the premise and how she almost made the apartment its own character but there seemed to be something missing and I ocassionally thought I'd skipped or missed a conversation so there may be something to be said on the continuity side of things.
Despite these mini niggles though Poston has brought together another sweet little read that passed my flight time really quickly. I love the idea of an apartment taking you back in time to make connections or give you a second chance and I enjoyed how everything tied up nicely in the end despite some darker themes running in the background.
I feel like Poston was trying to convey a deeper meaning to the book by the resolutions but I don't think it quite worked out. The two main characters had issues that just seemed to be forgotten about in the most part but again, maybe I just didn't pick up on it 🤣. I was definitely invested in the characters - maybe if the book was longer, as most time jumping novels should be - these bits would have been fully ironed out.
I think if you enjoyed The Dead Romantics you will like this one too although the crossover of characters was a bit forceful, I could have done without that!
