So cute and the perfect gift for your modern witch girlfriend or other astrology-enthused people in your life!
Looked forward to reading this book because the combination of Astrology/Zodiac and Literature really appealed to my curiosity. Sadly, whilst I did enjoy some of the content, mostly due to the fact that I had not read some of the literary extracts in their original form for a very long time, the overall composition of the book never managed to really spark my imagination; hence the 3 star rating.
Such a cute gift for booklovers who are also interested in astrology! This is more of a coffee table/a couple of pages a day kind of book, but I enjoyed it.
This was great fun, with lovely illustrations. I loved the concept of the zodiac / literary twist, but I feel it could have been explored a little more. A fun gift for someone who likes to check their horoscope.
Thanks NetGalley for providing a review copy.
This was cute - coffee table kinda cute.
I liked it in a way I like the Vogue and vanity fair my mum stores in our guestroom.
I’m a Leo and I always liked and understand Anna Karenina more than my friends or family. Am I like her? Probably. Did I needed a book with one page about why am I, my zodiac sign in particular, are like her? Nope.
If there were more information and less copied pages out of the books the author was referring to, I may would have enjoyed the book more.
Like I know the story of the little mermaid since my grandma told about it when I was 5. I don’t need to read it again.
And if I simply read an excerpt out of a book that I about 500 pages I still have little to none knowledge at all and just some random general Information.
I liked the idea though.
I’m really into astrology and books, so these twos combined should have been a hit.
I mean, if you’r searching for a new book for your decoration bookshelf in your office, buy this would. I’m sure it will make your shelf look pretty nice.
I liked this book, but I feel like a simple google search would have achieved the same result. however I suppose this would be a nice read for those who don’t know much about astrology
A fun look at the zodiac for book lovers. It would make a great gift for anyone interested in either subject.
Enjoyable read, could put it down and pick up at any point and didn't feel, like I was bound to it, to finish it all.
A fun and easy read.
As a book lover and a follower of zodiac, this book immediately got my attention. I really like how it's structured
It starts with a short introduction to the classic literature character, reasoning why they belong to a specific sign. What follows is a excerpt from the novel this character is from, and its used to show traits or actions of the character fit the description of the zodiac sign. For example, Elizabeth Bennet is Taurus and the mentioned scene is her confrontation with Mr Darcy's aunt. There is some poetry authors mentioned.
While I enjoyed the book, I missed having some characters from more modern works, like Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter for example.
Still, a quick read with interesting points.
📚 #NetGalley ARC review 📚
Title: A Book Lover's Guide to the Zodiac
Author: Charlie Castelletti
Release date: 17/10/23
Thanks to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for the chance to read this ARC ahead of its release later this year.
I'd describe myself as a casual zodiac enjoyer and avid book lover, so when I saw that this book promised to smash those two things together it seemed like an obvious title for me to request.
And it was...nice enough? It runs through the twelve zodiac signs, with a little bit of introductory text and then snippets and excerpts of books and characters who could be said to fit the characteristics of each sign. It's a neat premise and one of those ideas that you think "oh heck yeah, I wish I'd thought of writing that!".
However...either by choice or necessity, it's limited to books that are in the public domain, so there's nothing even remotely recent. I do like some of the great classics of literature, but find a lot of it pretty dry - I've never been an Austen fan, I have a turbulent relationship with Dickens, I love Wuthering Heights but am fairly indifferent to the rest of the Bronte canon - you get the idea.
Because of that, I came away feeling somewhat disappointed, like it could have been so much more if only the rest of All Of Literature had been allowed to join the party. I don't know how complex (or expensive?) it is to procure the rights to non-public domain works, but it sorta kinda maaaaybe feels a bit like perhaps that was considered too much effort, while using freely available material made for an easier copy-paste job. Cynical? Maybe. But that's how it felt.
A lovely cover design though - it'd look really nice on your shelf! 😅
2/5 stars ⭐⭐
This was a light and fluffy little book. I thought it was ok but it some extracts didn't fit with what they were trying to convey for that sign. I think it'd be a cute little gift but it's not life changing by any means.
It's a short and fairly predictable read. The author takes each of the signs of the Zodiac and then quotes different classics based upon the birthdates of the authors. Fairly typical selection for those whose reading consists of authors like Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, Dickens and Jane Austen. The link between the zodiac and these authors seems a little forced, if I'm honest. An entertaining curio, but not for everyone, and nothing I would suggest is essential.
This book is a fun way to introduce readers to the classics. I liked Charlie’s curation, but then again I like the classics and have read a lot of them…..so there’s a slight bias. To be honest, although it’s entertaining, this book unfortunately lacks any individuality that separates it from other classics anthologies. I’m a bit disappointed that the zodiac connections to the excerpts are so short.
A fun and quirky read that was enjoyable and will appeal to a wide market audience. Some good recommendations too.
This is really cute - in a coffee table book kinda way. I really enjoyed the short segments written about each sign and the explanations as to why the book characters/authors fit into that specific sign. Buuuut unfortunately these sections were short and the majority of the book is excerpts from other books. The excerpts chosen are amazing and there's a good selection. You could even go into them to see if you'd like to tackle the classics by getting a sneak peek of the writing style. Again, really cute idea but mostly copy-paste from other books.
i was curious about this book and i don't regret reading it at all. I know this is an ARC but I'll be purchasing the hardcopy when it's out!
This book is fun and one to browse.
For each sign of the zodiac it is reasoned that there is a character from literature to suit. This is followed by an excerpt from the novel e.g. if Elizabeth Bennet then a reading from Pride and Prejudice. There is also poetry and finally a Shakespeare play.
I note all the choices are from classical literature/plays/poetry which are able to be quoted fee free! That is the cynic in me.
A problem might be that most readers will only be interested in their own sign but it would be a great conversation starter and as I belong to a book group I will certainly see what people feel about the choices made for their signs.
I read this on Kindle but think it would be better as a hardback. I will look out for it when published.
I read a copy provided by NetGalley and the publishers but my views are my own.
Hmmmmm maybe I dontvappreciate the being of this novel but no it wasn't for me I read my own star sign specifically and found it mediocre maybe my pure scepticism of middle age I don't know
If you enjoy astrology and literature, this mashup is the read for you! Castelletti cleverly analyses the zodiac through the use of iconic literary figures. It's an easy, quick read but I loved the insights. I felt so seen!
Such a fun book. I loved reading the reasoning behind why certain characters fit into certain zodiac signs, the excerpts from the stories were lovely and the illustrations a nice touch. Although it could have done with a more in depth exploration of the connections between the zodiac and literature, it is good coffee table book!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-ARC.
I'm still not quite sure what this book was.
I found it a little strange, and very random.
I don't really get the connection with literature and the zodiac.
Didn't enjoy it. Didn't get it.
