An enjoyable read that was well written with a chilling story line and well developed characters. I liked it
Jack Thorne, who has struggled with mental health illnesses from a young age, escapes his cell in Bedlam with the help of Dr Sigmond Freud after two years of medical torture.
After catching the train to London, with a large amount of money he travels to America. On his way, he stops American journalist Clare Noble from being raped by throwing the drunken rapist overboard, and this starts the beginning of their relationship. As soon as he arrives, 'Jack the Ripper style' murders start occuring, but who is doing them...? I liked the story itself, but I felt the book dragged in places and didn't always capture my attention - perhaps a shorter book with a more consolidated story would have been more enticing.
3.5/5
I love historical fiction and this was right up my street! I would recommend this and it was a great read - easy to get through and finished within a day!
Personally, this wasn’t for me. It felt self-indulgent and ridiculous and not in a fun-to-read kind of way. It’s a shame because I really enjoyed the premise!
Jack Thorne has escaped his cell in Bedlam were for two years he has tortured by a unscrupulous Doctor. Fleeing Victorian London he makes his way to America. Along the way he saves American journalist Clare Noble from being raped and so beings their relationship. However there is still one burning question is Jack, Jack the Ripper. With Jack in American, Ripper style murders are taking place, is Jack the murderer he doesn't know, is he a innocence or he is Jack the Ripper. You will have to read it find out.
Over all the book is well written, the chapter's are from multiple POV’s, and is not one you can read in one sitting at 679 pages. I enjoyed the storyline however like others I did think the book was a tad on the long side.
There is so much to this wonderful horror story! Jack Thorne who changed his name from Franklin to Jack was in an insane asylum and when he was visited by none other then Sigmund Freud who aids with Jack’s escape by giving him money close and dropping him off at the train station Jack then find his way eventually to America where he hooks up with the reporter unfortunately for Jack a rookie detective has taken it upon himself to investigate the ripper style murders that have been happening Jack has an insatiable urge is his new friend the reporter going to help him clear his name or be his next victim. There was so much to the story if you love historical horror stories then trust me when I say Jack by JS Parker is an awesome awesome story. I thought at the beginning when he was in the asylum did that was going to be most of the story but OMG there’s so much more that’s all so good and gruesome… At least some of it is. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and totally think it is a five star read. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

This was a wonderful book. Extremely well written, and I love the multiple POV’s. The only downfall here was the length. It could’ve been about 100 pages less. There was a lot of filler that made it tedious to get through at times. Other than that this was a great reading experience.
Interesting, but too long as another reviewer said. Not as horrible horror as I expected, so that was a good thing.
I just finished Jack by J.S Parker and here is my review.
Jack Thorne is no ordinary man. His genius is only surpassed by the episodes of hallucinations and other mental health problems that have plagued him since his teens. One unfortunate episode lands him in Bedlams insane asylum for 2 years where is poked and prodded by an unscrupulous Doctor when he managed to get released in exchange for leaving London.
He takes his considerable fortune to America…. Upon arriving Jack the Ripper style murders begin to plague the city and a police officer from England picks up the trail with an American journalist to help. Can Jack prove his innocence or is there more to this than even Jack knows?
This book was exceptionally well written. The storyline was very well done and I loved the dual points of view. It worked really well. The character development was cleverly executed without being overdone. The balance of story development to character building was on point and artfully weaved together.
What didn’t I enjoy? It was too long. The book was about 150 pages too long. I felt there was a lot of filler in there that didn’t need to be there. Without it, this book would have been perfectly paced and a well rounded book. There were things that could have been removed and in my opinion didn’t really add value to the book. The tone of the book didn’t change much which was a little disappointing but really didn’t affect the enjoyability of the book.
Having said that, it is well worth the read and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction mashed with horror.
4 stars.
