Firstly, this is not my usual genre of book. My YA days are far behind me, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Once I settled into the story, I really liked it! I loved the multiple timelines, and the continuation of the song drawing everything together. I loved the concept, and the power of love that kept the story going, and I also loved the darkness and the light within the book. I don’t know what I expected, but what I found was a book full of damaged characters, each with their own personal demons, trying to find their places in the world. There’s a lot to like about this book in my opinion, and I think it is a strangely compelling story.
I really enjoyed this story. The writing was clear and concise, the plot easy to follow and the characters memorable.
The book focuses on the two characters as they find love, understand loss, come to terms with grief and support their families and realise they are the only two people who can hear their song which means they are destined to be together. Brief back stories of other couples coming together due to a song add to this enchanting story.
This is a lovely story and well written, will look out for other books by this author.
What a love story. An enchanting book that explored love in so many ways and across the centuries. I felt out of my depth at the beginning, not understanding where the story was taking me but I felt compelled to continue the journey.
Then, towards the end, the threads began to gently pull together and I saw how all of these love stories were bound across the time dimensions and the book spoke to me.
It is a story beautifully written and in its way, so gentle. Everyone in this story, loved in different ways but they were also inextricably linked in an other ways.
Oh gosh I wasn’t too happy with this book. It’s YA and I think I missed the part where it said this. It also dragged a lot! The last third of the book was better and I liked that a lot more. I think it should have focused more on the past lives rather than the one or two pages we were subjected to before we had to go back to the white boring teenagers. Not for me! Sorry.
Beautiful cover and concept!
The book is a slow burn and took me a while to really get into it. I get where it was coming from with the inserts of other timelines but I didn’t really need them and another format may have fit better? I did like the characters, obviously Will was a favourite of mine. Not happy about the ending, because I want to read more about Evan and Shosh, about all they experience. But what a blessing this book is.
I really enjoyed this book and love the romantic themes but also the much more series themes which surrounded the characters
I really wish that I loved this book. It has everything that I look for in a gut wrenching, heartbreaking romance. But personally for me, it didn't work.
I didn't shed a single tear. I was confused all the way through. Had no idea what was going on and not much will left in me to keep continuing with the book. It took me 6 months to finish this......
Maybe I missed the point, it had a beautiful cover and a great plot but yeah, not for me!
I Loved You In Another Life is a Dual P.O.V YA romance book with themes of magical realism which follows the lives of Evan and Shosh who are both struggling with traumas and are brought together by the mysterious singing voice which only they can hear.
The book is a little slow to begin with and got a little confusing at times however it all comes together well at the end.
Whilst I enjoyed this book and concept at times I felt it was lacking which made it a struggle to read which is why I'm giving it 3 stars.
That being said I will be looking into trying to read other works by this author in the future.
This is a beautiful story.
Such mixed emotions throughout but over all powerfully poignant.
I really enjoyed the family dynamics and the budding friendships.
David writes with a real honesty.
It all felt highly believable which made me even more invested in the characters and their journeys.
The main protagonists are Evan and Shosh. What was special was that they had their separate arcs as well as one that would bound them together.
I adored Evan's relationship with his brother Will, it was just everything. Nurturing, natural.
My heart was full by the end.
I Loved You in Another Life isn't a typical boy meets girl romance. It's so much more. A tale of love, loss and lessons learnt.
A must read.
I enjoyed reading this, but it didn't take my breath away. I liked the characters, the story was sweet with all the flashbacks to their past lives, but I don't know, I expected more.
The thing that I think I liked most about this was how much it normalised therapy. Evan has a therapist in the book and quite a few chapters were set in his appointments talking about various things that were happening. It felt refreshing in the way that it wasn't such a big thing, it was just an ordinary part of his life. As it should be!
I also liked how some of the flashbacks to the past lives showed gay relationships. Although I feel that more could have been done with the different types of people shown in these bits, it was good to see a nod to the LGBTQ+ community.
I definitely liked this book, but ultimately I don't think it will be one that stays with me.
I just couldn’t get into this book. The story felt clunky and the characters too mixed up. I finished but it wasn’t enjoyable
A story of love and soul mates. Evan and Shosh had such a difficult life. I felt so sorry for Shosh and the loss of her sister you could really sense her pain. A really great read.
Unfortunately I’ve had to DNF at 31%.
On paper this book sounded right up my street. Soulmates through time with magic realism? Count me in.
But I honestly struggled to get into this as I found the writing didn’t flow well enough to keep me engaged or even understanding what was going on. Having got a third of the way through I still felt bored, confused and unengaged, which is a shame because it has the premise to be great.
I feel like this would have been 2 stars has I been able to finish but since I’ve not finished I’m rating it a 1.
This story to a while to get into but I enjoyed the main characters and their love story, I think the other associated stories were a bit distracting and weren’t totally necessary to the story. It was unusual and interesting to read. Just when I was enjoying it, it ended quickly leaving me a little disappointed. Well written for young adults I think.
I was expecting a different story from the blurb and also didn’t realise it was a YA book, but that makes total sense now.
I really enjoyed the love story between Evan and Shosh, their lives were full of sadness and struggles but they were meant for each other. Their togetherness allowed them to overcome many obstacles and being out the best in each other which was very heartwarming. I found the other lives a little confusing but I did enjoy the book overall.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy :)
I also didn't realise that a book was Young Adult storyline and thought it was something else. Characters were interesting so kept going with it and it was fine. I am sure young adults would love this book.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bonnier , Hot Key booms for the read
I Loved You In Another Life was an interesting read, I loved the premise behind it and enjoyed the story of Evan and Shosh particularly around love and loss. The ending felt too quick for me and I wanted to read more about their experiences but overall an enjoyable story.
When I acquired this book I hadn't realised that it was more of a young adult book so I am not really sure wether my review is totally fair. However, it is well written and I am sure young adults will enjoy it. I couldn't really connect with the characters, but again, I think that is more of an age thing. I did, however, find parts of the story quite cute.
I found this a very confusing read and at no point did I really feel anyhing for the two main characters Evan and Shosh. I read the advance description and thought that it was a lovely plot and idea but somehow it failed to meet my expectations. The emotional parts where the author decribed how each of the two were coping with their life journeys was very positive and I liked that aspect of this . I really felt that this was aimed at YA who would perhaps relate more to the mental issues being described.
It was well written but I did not feel that I was the right audience for the book
