A good summer read filled with twists and turns. It felt a bit slow at certain points but it was a good storyline. Thank you to Kate Gray and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
3.25⭐️ I enjoyed this book and at times had my anxiety going wild but I did get a bit bored the middle section felt as if it just dragged on and I lost interest but the ending was good but also left me a bit disappointed. I just wanted more from the characters I feel like there were situations mentioned and then just brushed to the side. But it was still a good book
This was ok. I thought it was going to have a bit more buildup and be entirely set on holiday, which it wasn't, but the start of it was really quiet good. It was easy to read, interesting getting to know the characters and the setting was good. Once we were off holiday it got less interesting and a bit all over the place. I don't enjoy gaslighting and the 'crazy woman' type of theme, but if these don't bother you, you might find it more enjoyable. I did think it got a little convoluted and that the culprit could have been more believable/interesting if it was someone else. I also found one of the final things very unbelievable, where an item is handed between one person and another and is evidence. Overall it was ok, writing was fine, easy to read, 2.5 stars.
This was a superb summer read. Full of twists. Hold your breath moments and even a jump scare! I can’t recommend this book enough!
Really enjoyed this one. Full of tension and has some really good twists, especially at the end. Liked the ending too. Great characters and a gripping plot.
The Honeymoon by Kate Gray is a captivating psychological thriller set against the exotic backdrop of Bali. The story follows two newlywed couples who meet at a luxury cliffside restaurant and quickly find themselves entangled in a web of secrets and lies. The night ends with a mysterious death, casting suspicion and doubt over everyone involved.
Strengths:
• Setting and Atmosphere: The lush and luxurious Bali setting provides a stark contrast to the dark and twisty plot, enhancing the overall suspense and intrigue .
• Multiple Perspectives: The narrative is told from different characters’ viewpoints, which adds depth and complexity, keeping readers guessing about each character’s true motives and secrets .
• Twists and Turns: The book is filled with unexpected twists, making it a page-turner that keeps readers engaged until the very end. The suspense is well-maintained, and the conclusion is both surprising and satisfying .
Weaknesses:
• Character Likeability: Some readers may find the characters less likable, which can make it difficult to fully empathize with their plights. However, this also adds to the unpredictability of who can be trusted .
Overall, The Honeymoon is a thrilling read that is perfect for fans of psychological thrillers. The combination of an exotic setting, complex characters, and a gripping plot makes it a standout debut in this genre.
Two happy couples embark on their honeymoon in Bali. Jamie and Erin, along with Sophia and Mark, meet at their hotel and quickly form a connection. They celebrate their last night together at a fancy cliff-side restaurant, but no one could have predicted that the evening would end with a dead body.
The tragedy appears to be an accident, but as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that there’s more to it. Secrets emerge, and the couples’ lives take unexpected turns. The question looms: Can a marriage survive when it begins with a lie?
The novel explores themes of trust, betrayal, and the consequences of choices. The tension builds as the characters grapple with guilt and the need to uncover the truth. Set against the backdrop of both Bali and London, “The Honeymoon” kept me guessing until the end, with a satisfying twist that tied everything together.
A good read
Plenty of twists and turns
Will keep you guessing at what is going to happen
Thanks NetGalley
The book starts off with two couples on a dream honeymoon in Bali who strike up an unlikely friendship.
Erin and Sophia meet and click with one another, and Erin invites her to dinner for their final meal before they leave. The whole evening is awkward, Erin accidentally knocks drinks over a man called George who is then killed that evening.
Fast-forward both couples return to England to return back to normal life- but things are going downhill for both couples.
Sophia is still reeling from losing her job at a red top newspaper in London and is now working on a small local newspaper and is still chasing the story that cost her her job.
I found the first three quarters of the book to be really good, it was tense, lots of puzzle pieces to fit together but the last quarter didn’t feel like it flowed as well and the ending felt a little off for me.
Overall I enjoyed the book but it isn’t the best thriller I have read.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A Fantastic thriller from @netgalley with many twists and turns and a tiny glimpse of Bali. Two newly-wed couples with their own cupboard skeletons. Perfect for a holiday read. Makes me curious to explore other Kate Gray novels
Loved this book. I loved the characters and different characters points of view (my personal favourite in books, especially thriller). I didn’t see the twist and loved it.
Would recommend.
Two newly wed couples meet in their exotic honeymoon destination. Not having much in common, they despite themselves, share a meal on the night before they all return to their new married lives in the UK. The dinner doesn't go well, why would it? A terrible storm rolls in. A man dies. Accident? Murder? Who knows. The incident however, seen by one couple is not reported to the authorities, and is seemingly the catalyst that causes layer upon layer of secrets to be revealed. All four of the key characters have things in their past and present that they would prefer not to share, and one of them starts digging, their lives begin to unravel.
The Honeymoon is a nice fit for the holiday market, intriguing enough to encourage you to keep reading, but you'll probably never recommend this to close friends or potential honeymooning couples. The pace and mystery tick along at a constant pace, but the implausible behaviour of the of the key characters is mildly disturbing, distracting from the overall quality of the novel. It was a little like following a pantomime, where you're internally yelling, "Look behind you !"
This is a amazing twisty read kept me guessing until the end I just couldn't put it down it kept me up way past my bed time
Really enjoyed this book
Although a little long, it has brilliant characters and an amazing twist at the end!
Atmospheric, and though I expected more to be set abroad, and i felt a little mislead, it was a very good book and brilliantly written
Secrecy and guessing fuel this story and the ride you will go on along the way reading it.
Multiple POV’s is always a winner for me, especially with thrillers.
Twist and turns will keep you guessing right until the end. Fantastic read!
The book’s opening chapter draws you in as a man’s body is found on the beach at the bottom of some steps. Then we learn about the events that lead up to this. It’s the last night of their honeymoon in Bali for two couples. Sophia and Erin get chatting on their sun beds and arrange to spend their last night together with their husbands at a local restaurant. The dinner is marred when James, Erin’s husband, becomes embroiled in an argument with a fellow diner. This is the person whose body was found on the beach. After being questioned by the police they return home but Sophia, a journalist, decides to investigate the death further and then lots of secrets are revealed. The story is told from Erin and Sophia’s points of view leading to evidence of who was responsible for the man’s death. This was a really enjoyable read with plenty of tension and username and, lots of twists and turns.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Since finishing this book I have searched for more and more by this author. I could not stop. A good thriller is what I love and without a doubt this is one. I love how you get to see life during and after and the real issues coming out. Really massive thank you for my ARC, I honestly want more from this author
Thank you to the Publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A honeymoon is a time to make memories that last a lifetime, but I am not so sure a murder is meant to be a part of it!
This is my first book by Kate Gray and I must say I enjoyed it, I found it to be a nice easy going read that I enjoyed from my sunbed on my own holiday (not as exotic as Bali)
I liked the way the book was set out, being written from different perspectives, made things more interesting.
I look forward to reading more in the future from her.
Thank you NetGalley for the advanced reading copy.
The plot was a bit sketchy with a few jarring issues. They did occur very early on but unfortunately for me I just wasn’t convinced for the rest of the story. The incident in the exclusive restaurant (where you had to book way in advance yet the one couple who had booked a table for two were on the same day able to add two more guests) was overblown and highly unlikely. One of the two couples behaved in no way like any newlyweds I’ve ever met with the husband going early to bed with a headache ( they all seemed to suffer from headaches actually) and the wife going out on her own. So this spoiled the book for me.
The mother of all cover ups. Two couples on honeymoon in Bali but someone will lose their life. So gripping under the surface and so many lies that you don't know what to believe!
