A compulsive tale of gaslighting, secrets and lies. Two honeymoon couples meet up in idyllic Bali, before their holiday is over a stranger is dead and the incident shadows their lives back home. An easy, beach read.
This is an absolute thrill ride of a book. Compelling characters, constant misdirections and secrets, and the pace is relentless. I struggled to put it down. Definitely a one-sitting, gasp-inducing gem of a story.
Well it all started it so well.
Sophia and Erin met at the pool on the last day of their Honeymoon in Bali what was a wonderful day ending less than ideal. 2 loved up couples with different stories and backgrounds find their lives drawn together.
Sophia is our was a up and inspiring investigate journalist until events well 1 in truth changed it all. But the evening Erin has a table at one of the hottest restaurants in town and incites her new friend and husband to join them. The meal starts week enough but by the end of the night there is a storm and a dead body. They have to get back to England 🇬🇧 and their lives but not its nothing like they had anticipated with shocking twists suspense and a gripping story that had me hooked right to the end.
This is so well writen with a excellent storyline, great characters and well you really need to read this for yourself and see. I think it's great. That's my honest opinion and I hope you love it as well. The action is from the start and builds to an intriguing conclusion (not a cliff hanger). I would love to read more of Sophia's future story how she moves forward they all will have a tale to tell.
I was hooked on this story from the beginning. Two newlyweds meet on the last night of one of their holiday, but a sinister event happens and no-one seems to be as they seem. The story was original and there were so many twists and turns throughout you didn't know who to root for. Little subtle hints were left in the story which kept me guessing right up to the end. Would definitely read this author again. Probably my favourite book of the year so far.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Haven’t read a thriller for a while so it was interesting how gripped I was. I thought the main characters were all quite dark and there were several twists that I wasn’t expecting. .
I enjoyed this domestic thriller set across various locations from Bali to London.
Erin and Jamie meet Sophia and Mark on the last night of their honeymoon in Bali- the next day, a body is found. There are numerous story lines woven through this book that connect all the characters after the incident, and give history of each of them prior to the honeymoon.
I love an unreliable narrator and in this book, I had no idea who to trust or what to believe.
There’s some great twists and turns amongst the dark themes of this book.
A great debut and I look forward to more from this author!
Two couples on honeymoon in the same resort in Bali meet quite by chance. Erin, a former care worker and Jamie, who sells security systems, and Sophia, a journalist and husband Mark, a mortgage adviser. On their last evening, they have dinner together, during which there is an altercation between Jamie and a disgruntled drinker. After dinner, despite an approaching storm, Jamie and Erin visit a viewing platform which overlooks the sea at their resort. Later the man who argued with Jamie is found dead on the steps leading to the platform.
The writer weaves a story from multiple viewpoints which cleverly connects these four strangers. Sophia, who lost a lucrative career as a journalist when an undercover job when wrong, now works for a local newspaper. She is intrigued by the death, which occurred in their honeymoon resort. She wonders whether Jamie and Erin, who were headed for the viewing platform, might know something and decides to follow it up, hoping it may well reinstate her career as an investigative journalist.
As the story progresses, the situation is also seen from Jamie and Erin’s viewpoints. Why is Jamie suddenly never around? And is Erin justified in her assumption that he is turning into a coercive and controlling monster? Or is she just being paranoid?
A well woven story with suspense, lies, multiple red herrings and a surprise twist. Kept me hooked the whole way through! Recommended.
My thanks to Netgalley, Welbeck Publishing and Kate Gray for an ARC of The Honeymoon in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book. A great psychological thriller. Two couples meet on their honeymoons in Bali. One couple come across an incident on their last night which ties the two couples together with frightening consequences.. Nothing is as it seems.
I would recommend this book.
The pace of this book starts steadily enough. However as you make progress you find yourself turning pages at ever increasing speed! The ending was pretty sensational and most satisfying.
The plot locations were interesting. The characters were intriguing and very different. Bringing everything together proved to be very smooth and left me with a taste for more!
This book is incredible! It's so dark and twisted. It is one of the biggest roller coasters I've ever read, and my head will be spinning for quite some time, I expect. I even told my partner the entire plot, day by day as I read and more was revealed.
For a debut (in this genre), this book shines! I genuinely gasped out loud several times towards the end. You need to read The Honeymoon!!
I really enjoyed this one. I thought I had the characters pegged early on, but it had some great twists that kept me guessing.
I loved the story told from multiple points of view and how that can reveal more twists.
If you love a thriller for your summer holiday I recommend this!
I read The Honeymoon over a couple of days and found I was easily drawn into the plot. It’s a great thriller of a book that has plenty of twists and turns. I found I read it quite quickly as the chapters are fairly short and I wanted to find out how the plot progressed. Thank you to NetGalley, Welbeck Publishing UK and the author for the chance to review.
I was really gripped by this story set in paradise but with some very dark themes. The story is told mainly by the two female leads in turn and I was left guessing till close to the end as to what the real truth was. Themes of domestic abuse and coercive control made it an uncomfortable read at points - a very gripping psychological thriller.
Such a good thriller something different which really kept me guessing .Lots of twists and turns and revelations .Two couple meet on their honeymoons in Bali and on the last night a man is found dead was it an accident or was it murder !!!Back in London the couples meet up again but are they hiding more secrets nothing is as it seems .Just so brilliant and clever .Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC.
Erin and Jamie meet Sophia and Mark on honeymoon in Bali. The women are polar opposites: Sophie, chic and wordly; Erin unsophisticated and, in her own eyes, plain. On their last night, they go out for a meal and there is an altercation with another diner. Shortly afterwards there is a fatal accident. When the two couples return home, the events surrounding the accident haunt them. That is the basic plot but there is an awful lot going on under the surface. One husband appears scarily controlling and the other is obsessed with keeping watch on anyone coming near the house. The reasons for all of this unfold at the same time as enquiries are continuing into the death on Bali and many twists emerge right until the end. The uncertainties around the death and curiosity about how the marriages would pan out kept me reading to the end. However, there were moments that lacked plausibility, including the speed with which the two couples became friends and stayed in touch and events towards the end of the story. None of the key characters emerged as likeable so that the ending when it came was very dark. This is an enjoyable thriller if a tiny bit unconvincing in places and I would be keen to explore other titles by the same author.
Erin and Jamie are having an idyllic honeymoon on Bali. Meeting up with another couple of honeymooners, Sophia and Mark, they all get together for dinner at the exclusive Blue Fin restaurant, for a final meal before heading back to England and real life. However, that night brings more than a tropical storm into their lives.
Starting this book I felt is was very much of its genre and a typical beach read, and that I knew where the plot line was heading. However, as the story progressed it became more than your run of the mill holiday read, with some good characterisation and a twisty plot. The author did succeed in part to keep me guessing of who to believe and what, if anything, was the truth or gaslighting.
Not a mind blowing book, but an enjoyable, easy read.
Thank you NetGalley.
I'm very torn on how I feel about this book after finishing it. I wanted to keep reading to find out what happened, unable to put my Kindle down, but I just feel a little disappointed at the end.
I felt as though the author tried to hard to make the book and its characters as mysterious as possible throughout the entire book, with a hundred little theories and odd behaviours to keep you on your toes, and I feel like that might have worked, had she left it up to the reader to decide who really committed the murders. I feel like at least three characters had been set up nicely in a who-done-it way, but we were handed everything on a silver platter at the end. It kind of just felt a bit...flat to me.
Also, the writing style - the dialogue more specifically - was stunted at times. Erin stuttered or stammered quite a lot, but it was so awkwardly and stiffly done that it set my teeth on edge reading it. And it was the same unbelievable style every time; "w-w-what?" "s-s-sorry?" "w-w-why?" "n-n-no?" To me, this is how I used to write 'stuttering' when I was fourteen years old and trying my hand at writing for the first time. People don't tend to strip over their words like that in real life unless they have an actual stutter or an issue with their speaking.
Other than that, this story was fast paced and enjoyable. I think if you enjoy things like Eastenders, Emerdale, Cornation Street, you'll probably enjoy this. I personally wouldn't put this down as a thriller of any kind, it was more of a dramatic murder mystery.
Talk about a honeymoon they'll never forget!!
What a rollercoaster and I mean that in the literal sense. This book had so many twists and turns it was utterly captivating.
Admittedly when I started reading I honestly thought I could guess how the storyline would go... YEAH I was so wrong lol!
The characters were really diverse and you do kind of get a sense of who the bad guy is but then towards the end you are really left second guessing that.
The book on a whole was atmospheric and really addictive so it was hard to put down.
I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes a creepy character or two and a good little thriller.
I loved this book! Fast paced, gripping, and full of twists. It really kept me guessing the whole way through- a fantastic summer thriller read!
This will be a hit beach read.
It has everything, glorious locales and gritty psychological thrills.
I found parts of this a little predictable but it will be perfect for the beach.
