- Single mom
- Grumpy teacher/soccer coach
If you've never read a Pippa Grant book, this is a good place to start. It's a book that is so quintessentially Pippa: relatable and flawed characters, shenanigans bordering on wacky but in a fun way, her signature humor, and of course, animals (Earl the bear was a great character!) I do think this one ran a little deeper emotionally, compared to her past books, and I loved that.
Sweet, tender, and filled with laugh out loud moments with endearing characters. I enjoyed it a lot.
Thank you for the ARC!
A single mom, a grumpy math teacher, and a bear. Oh my! Another incredible book from romcom queen Pippa Grant.
Looking for a fresh start Maisey Spencer moves herself and her daughter June to a hobby ranch she inherited from her late uncle in Hell’s Bells, Wyoming. There are a lot of challenges, including a bear with boundary issues, but the biggest is the hot crotchety tenant Flint Jackson that rents the gate house. As Maisey works hard to make a new life for her and June, who is none too happy about it, she keeps running into Flint. She slowly starts to realize that Flint is a fixer-upper just like her. And fixer-uppers just happen to be her specialty.
Flint and Maisey have amazing chemistry and their banter was hilarious.
Maisey is a strong, sassy, loving mom. I related to how she never felt like she was enough. I think a lot of moms will see themselves in her.
Flint is so passionate about helping kids. He dedicates his life to making sure no kids fall through the cracks.
A shout out to Earl who was one of my favourite characters I’ve read.
Hell’s Bells is a perfect small town full of awesome colourful characters. Add in lots of laughter, entertaining wildlife, heat and an HEA, and you have a stunning read.
I would 100% recommend this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
From the opening meet-disaster involving a cow and a bear to the epilogue’s HEA, I was fully charmed by this book. Following the dissolution of her marriage and conclusion of her reality TV home improvement series, single mom Maisey and her sixteen-year-old daughter, Junie, relocate to a ranch they inherited from Maisey’s uncle. Along with the land and buildings in need of repair, Maisey has inherited a tenant living in her gatehouse—one that is rather grumpy about Maisey’s ownership of and now presence on the land. And he has no qualms about letting his disgruntlement be known.
Flint and Maisey fight their attraction—each for their own reasons—and the entire experience is delicious. I enjoyed watching them overturn their first impressions and preconceived misconceptions of each other, and I adored watching the small town embrace Maisey and Junie just like it first embraced Flint years ago.
Pick this one up if you are in need of a heartwarming story with plenty of humor and some delectable steam.
I received an advance copy from Montlake and NetGalley. All review opinions are my own.
This book was a fun small town romp with unexpected depth. Though I found some dialogue awkward and clunky I though the emotion of the book was sweet and sincere.
Though this is clearly a romance novel, the relationship I loved the most was between Maisey and her daughter June. Some of the teenage mother interactions were so hilarious and reminiscent of my own teenage hood 😂
I though the resolution was lovely and that these characters had earned their HEA. ❤️✨
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.
I really liked this book, and because of that, I feel like I've been robbed of my happy ending... Ok, I still got the happily ever after, but it was too fast and superficial. I would have loved some more chapters about how they worked everything out, about their new routine and life, instead everything was put in a couple of chapters and "the end", that's it.
I liked it! As with other Pippa Grant books I’ve read, the banter is amazing and I found myself snort laughing at multiple points. As a mom myself, Maisey’s inner thoughts really resonated with me. I loved the small town characters but wished we had gotten more interactions in the second half of the book. There was so much emphasis on what everyone would think but we never actually saw it play out. And I would have loved to see Flint asking Junie for permission to marry her mom. All in, a very sweet, funny read.
Not My Kind of Hero
by: Pippa Grant
I like this author. I have read most of her previous books and enjoyed all of them. Her characters are humorous and flawed and real. This story is no different. It is filled with characters that are dealing with real life issues and problems while trying to maintain a positive outlook and carry on. There are loads of feels and laughs and there is always a crazy animal involved…. Earl the Bear!
Solid 4 Stars!
*** My thanks to the Publisher and NetGalley. This is my honest review given in exchange for the ARC of this book. ***
This was an adorable story line. You can’t help but fall in love with Masiey’s determination and Flints absolute dislike of change. These two have a rocky start, but their aggravation of each other becomes something more. You will laugh out loud in some parts and feel the hurt and pain for them in others.
Maisey is a saint, dealing with her ex and her teenage daughter and the local wildlife in particular Earl the bear who has taken a fancy to their new home, she is also throwing herself into small town living by doing every odd job going in her quest to be accepted by the township. Flint is not interested in a new woman, especially one who he thinks has taken advantage of their dead uncle.
The interaction between these and the insight into teenagers is great, and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I really liked this book. The plot was good, the characters were well-developed and it was a very fun read. My one critique of the book is the ending. Within 2 pages, Flint and Maisey went from Maisey being scared and not wanting to be in a relationship, to being engaged. I feel like there could have been another chapter before the epilogue of everyone's reaction to them finally dating. The book focused a lot on the idea of community and their past relationships but never really talked about how the town reacted. I think a scene when Flint asks Junie if he can marry her mom would have also been good to include.
Overall, it was a good book and I would definitely recommend it to my friends.
Pippa Grant books always make you laugh and sometimes make you cry.
I didn't realize that Ms. Grant's newest book, Not My Kind of Hero, would have me laughing in the first chapter. Maisie, her daughter Junie, and my kind of hero, Flint, are all engaging, relatable and sheer joy to read about.
Pippa's ability to get women and what we want/need is a gift to all of her readers. She writes Maisie as someone who has regrets about how she has been raising her child and then does whatever she has to do to try and rectify it - even if it means moving away from everything and everyone you know to do it and sacrificing her own relationships to make that happen.
Flint is a vulnerable-ish main character that we root for and want to get his HEA as well.
Is it wrong that I want an Earl like animal in my suburban neighborhood? The secondary characters in all of her books are sheer joy and they don't disappoint in this book. I just hope that she finds other stories from them so that we can continue this as a series.
I love this book and wish that it was out already so I could buy the audiobook to listen to as well.
Yessss give me a grumpy hero, add a single mother with forced proximity and boom - you got yourself a winner! I’ve never read this author before but I’m definitely interested in her backlist now. The slow burn and the tension was sizzling. Highly recommend!
The first chapter of this book had me reaching for the tissues to wipe the tears from my eyes, tears from the laughter that caused the cat to jump from my lap! Sure, we have the amazing Maisie and Flint, the perfect sixteen-year-old Junie, but Earl almost steals the books with his antics.
The laughs had my pelvic floor cursing. It was the depth of the characters though that I really adored. Both were broken people who didn't feel worthy, yet managed to see each other in themselves and learn that weaknesses can become strengths. Chef's kiss!
Sure, I'd read Pippa Grant's shopping list if she published it, but this book was amazing and I believe is now my favourite PG book ever. Take that Cooper Rock!
Thanks so much to Montlake and NetGalley for the early copy.
I’ve long enjoyed Pippa Grant’s stories, and Not My Kind of Hero is no exception.
No one writes small town shenanigans quite like this author, we’re guaranteed laugh out loud hilarious moments, as well as tender swooney scenes and everything in between.
Maisey, former TV reality star moves herself and her teenage daughter to Hells Bells, where she inherited a fixer upper ranch. Queue in Flint, math teacher/soccer coach, as her grumpy tenant, some pesky wildlife and we have a romcom masterpiece!!!
I definitely recommend this book to all romcom enthusiast.
This was the perfect blend of humor and depth. Sassy and serious. Finding yourself and finding love. This single mama romance hit all the right notes and incorporated the kiddo in the best way. Not some off-hand note where you know a kid exists to further the storyline. No, this teen was a star of the show and I adored her. And oh that broody standoffish cowboyesque soccer coach... I 100% recommend.
Pippa Grant is just knocking them out of the park lately with these new and upcoming releases.
I received a free copy of this ebook from NetGalley for an honest review.
This was a great stand alone Pippa book. I have loved her world building for the other series she has but this was a great step out of those.
Nothing quite like a stubborn wild animal, single parenthood and a crazy small town to bring two people together.
This is a heartwarming tale with plenty of comedy gold to keep you laughing for hours.
A new standalone that’s a perfect gateway for new readers to enter the Pippaverse! I mean, it takes place in a town called Hells Bells and they live on Wit’s End Ranch. Not My Kind of Hero is full of laugh out loud moments that will count as an ab workout. Follow Maisey, her daughter June, and their only tenant Flint as they each face personal challenges, discovering they might just be who each one needs.
This book was not what I was expecting, it was much more. It was such a swoony read with off the charts chemistry.
I was hooked from the very first chapter. In true Pippa fashion this book is filled with laughs, fun characters and of course animals. I’d expect nothing less from this author. No one does small town romantic comedies like Pippa does. This book is a bit different from her usual off the charts laugh out loud novels. It’s much deeper, which I really enjoyed.
In this book we meet Maisey Spencer, a divorced former reality TV home improvement star, who moves to a ranch she inherited from her uncle in Hell’s Bells, Wyoming. To say June, Maisey’s teenage daughter, is unhappy by the move is an understatement. Flint Jackson, the cranky hot tenant who’s been running the place since her uncle died? He’s also not ecstatic she’s there and hopes she’ll realize how out of her depth she is and go back to where she came from.
I loved the tension between the two main characters. They had amazing chemistry from the start and their banter was great. It was a nice slowburn.
Flint is a great grumpy hero and Maisey is a strong, fierce heroine who’s done with people who think she’s not good enough. Throw in a town filled with great people, a very bright teenager dealing with a lot and you have an awesome read.
Highly recommended! I hope we get more stories from Hell’s Bells.
Nice little slow burn rom-com. I am a sucker for small town romances and it was quite an enjoyable read. The build up between the two main characters was paced well.
