Pippa Grant always makes me laugh and makes me sweat. NOT MY KIND OF HERO did both. There's also a moody af teen, a bear, a grumpy hero, and a single mom starting over. Add some stellar small town antics and it's a win!
But I ended up really loving Maisy's story. She lost herself in her former husband for so many years. It's such a relatable and easy thing to get caught up in. I loved how it was written and how Maisy realized her mistakes and did her damnedest not to repeat them.
It's really refreshing to read a romance with slightly older characters. NOT MY KIND OF HERO did a perfect job of making them more seasoned, but not writing these two as suddenly at death's door after their 30s.
This was a really good read that I totally recommend. Not as steamy as Pippa Grant's otehr books, but still hot and full of fun.
Not My Kind of Hero is a delightful read that I thoroughly enjoyed. This book offers a refreshing take on a divorced single mother/grumpy teacher/tenant forbidden romance, and it's brimming with charm and humour.
The chemistry between the two main characters is electric and kept me eagerly turning the pages. The quirky cast of characters in the small town adds a layer of whimsy and personality to the story that I found truly endearing.
At its heart, this book tells the story of Maisey, a single mother on a journey to reconnect with her teenage daughter, Juniper, while unexpectedly stumbling upon love herself. Both Maisey and Flint are compelling characters who have faced their fair share of life's challenges and are doing their best to navigate the ups and downs.
If you're in the mood for a heartwarming and lighthearted read that combines romance with family dynamics and small-town quirks, Maisey and Flint's story is the perfect choice. Pippa Grant has crafted a story that's both entertaining and emotionally resonant, making it an ideal pick for those looking for a feel-good escape in the world of romance.
You can never go wrong with a Pippa Grant romance read! They are a guaranteed romance reading good time! 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗠𝗬 𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗢 was that and more. Once I started reading this single mom, grumpy/sunshine romance I was all in. It was sweet and sexy and funny. Everything I love reading. I’m giving it the judy.ann.loves.books stamp of approval, TBR & Enjoy!
Pippa Grant strikes the prefect balance between hilarious and heartfelt. Not My Kind of Hero had me alternating between cackling and an aching heart. I absolutely adore Maisy and Junie, their relationship is a work in progress but so sweet with both of them actively working to make things better. Flint is perfection, watching him go from never wanting to fall in love to "oh no, I'm falling in love" is delicious and swoony. He didn't swoop in to rescue her, but stood by and offered support and that just made me love him more. In true Pippa Grant style, the meet cute is entertaining and Hell's Bells is exactly what you want in a small, tight knight, quirky town. I highly recommend this book, it's a true feel good story.
3.5 stars
I didn’t love this one. The teenager was very whiny and the drama with the father irritated me. The romance took a backseat to the story.
This was hard to get into at first. Maisey seemed irritating and the setting felt forced. I usually adore small town romances but this took me far longer to actually enjoy. Flint was an enjoyable grump.
Not My Kind of Hero follows single mom Maisey Spencer, who has just relocated with her 16-year-old daughter Juniper, to a property in rural Wyoming that she has inherited from her uncle. Juniper is not happy about the move, having left behind all of her friends as well as her position on her school's soccer team. Maisey knows the transition for Juniper is going to be tough and makes it her mission to do everything she can to help her adjust.
In addition to taking care of her daughter, Maisey also has to contend with a tenant, who she meets under less than ideal circumstances when she has a run-in with a bear eating a dead cow on her property. Flint Jackson gruffly comes to her rescue, and after trading a few snarky barbs, the two of them awkwardly part ways. Maisey soons learns that Flint is also a math teacher at her daughter's new school as well as the soccer coach so she knows she'll unfortunately have to deal with the sexy grump on a regular basis.
This was truly such a fun read! I loved Maisey. She's fiesty, independent, and resourceful, and just so devoted to her daughter. I just adored everything about her. Juniper is fabulous too, clearly taking after her mom quite a bit, which made it fun to watch the two of them go head to head.
I also loved Flint, especially once we start to delve beneath that gruff exterior and see what a softie he really is. His chemistry with Maisey was off the charts and their banter was pure snarky perfection that had me laughing so hard! That chemistry, coupled with their slow burn romance, just made this such a delightful read.
If you're looking for a bingable romcom, be sure to check this one out. I flew through the pages of this one in a day, laughing and swooning all the way!
This romance is perfect for fans of these tropes:
💋Single Mom
💋Forced Proximity
💋Grumpy Sunshine
💋Small Town Romance
💋Forbidden Love
This was cute friends to enemies to lovers book. I liked that it was an odd. And the characters were a little odd. Which, I’ve found that all of Pippa’s stories are not the norm. And always a little over the top.
The Heroine. I loved that she came home to help her mother with her bakery that had recently lost her eye sight. She was a good sister and a daughter.
The Hero. I really liked his character. He was sweet to everyone. He was a little rude to the heroine, but she broke his heart so it’s understandable. I get where he was coming.
And the romance was cute.
If you want a funny and cute read. I would definitely recommend this book.
Small-town Humor Gold!
When life gets heavy, there is one clear and reliable way I can count on to lighten my mood but also bring me serious giggles, heartfelt smiles, and swoony relationship goals: A Pippa Grant novel. And Not My Kind of Hero is another perfect example of how and why her hilarity and hijinks, nestled amongst some steamy heat and seriously deep elements of heart, are one of my favorite go-to mood balms.
Not My Kind of Hero is chock-full of great characters in an engaging and fun storyline, with some pretty big emotions as well. It’s a bit of an angsty slow burn as both mains grapple with demons and expectations, but once ignition hits, it’s definitely got energy flare intensity. And all those spaces between and leading up to that flare are fraught with the humor Pippa brings best. Small town feels, family connections, starting over and finding your tribe—all there.
Flint Jackson is serious book boyfriend material. And Maisey Spencer is one-hundred percent the person I could easily fall into a fast friendship with. Their connection is beautifully built, as are the lives they’re both struggling to manage separately. And I love that they’re drawn together by a character we never meet (Tony), but I feel like I know personally by the time their tale is told.
Not My Kind of Hero is truly standalone gold, and a fantastic way to lose yourself for a few hours. Just don’t be surprised if you find a bit of yourself within the lines and pages as well.
I knew from the start that this would be a 4 or 5 star read for me. I mean…it is a Pippa Grant book. She is guaranteed to have me laughing throughout the entire read and honestly? That’s exactly what I look for in a book.
This one is no different. It has more of a grumpy/sunshine aspect to it which I LOVED. I loved the fact that they just kept running into each other on every occasion. It was like the stars just aligned perfectly for them wherever they went. I just wish they both SAW IT HAPPEN because holy slow burn Batman!!
Definitely give this one a shot. You will not be disappointed!
All the shenanigans and hilarity you come to expect from Pippa, while she some how makes it seem totally plausible! As a Mom of teens, this book spoke to me and I appreciated how she showed the struggles of parenting (and teaching) teens while capturing the individual needs of a parent. Don't misunderstand me, it's a rom-com and the romance is central to the story - the side story of a mother/daughter just hit me.
Maisey and Flint have their own reasons for not wanting to get involved, as well as their own assumptions of each other. As they get to know the real person underneath that assumption, the reasons seem less important. 5 stars, recommend this rom-com!
This was an enjoyable book with a couple of characters that I'd have loved to have met and others that I enjoyed very much. Light hearted, fun books are some of my favorites and you can always count on Pippa Grant for some laughs.
What a fanatic read! My first by this author and won't be my last.
I was given this ARC for my honest feedback. This Romantic comedy was about a newly single mom and grumpy MMC.... I love a good grumpy hero!
Maisey Spencer has put the past in the rear view mirror. Good bye cheating ex-husband and hello Hells Bells, Wyoming! Maisy packed up her teenage daughter and is ready to be a ranch hand to a place she hasn’t been back to in a decade. Thankfully she knows the place has been left in the grumpy ranch hand Flint’s care for the last few months; she has assumed Flint is an old curmudgeon based on his emails. Oh how wrong she was. Flint saves Maisy and Junie from a bear attack their first morning there. Flint rode up like a knight in shining armor, to shoo away the bear. He is not at all what she assumed he is. He is gorgeous and probably her age. How will she keep her bargain to herself while chemistry is telling her something else.
Not My Kind of Hero follows Maisy as she finds herself without the influence of a man, becoming the best mother she can be and all while reconnecting with a place that made her heart sing as a child.
Read this book if you
Like to laugh
Single moms
Love interest is a Teacher
Like a full cast in a small town
Pippa Grant can do no wrong. She knows how to write books that make me stay up late promising myself just 5 more minutes. I am so glad for the opportunity to read this book. Thank you @Montlake and Rick for the advanced copy! All opinions are mine.
OMG!!! I’m a huge fan of Pippa Grant’s books. This book was hilarious and super emotional!
Maisey knows that fixing up her life with a fresh start in the ranch she inherited in Hell’s Bells, Wyoming, would come with challenges. Things like snow. Wildlife. Local gossip about why she and her daughter are there. But the biggest challenge? Her surly new tenant. He’s like a bear. Fascinating from a distance, but don’t get too close, or he’ll bite.
But he’s not only her tenant; he’s also her daughter’s math teacher and soccer coach. They keep running into each other. There’s chemistry, there’s attraction and a lot of longing. LIKE PIPPA GRANT’S LOT OF LONGING. And aghast, and feelings, and a matchmaking bear call Earl. And a death super famous cow.
The characters are deep and caring, it has a lot of funny moments and internal dialogs that for me are one of the best parts of this book. It’s well written, engaging and a super slow-burn romance with a bit of spicy times. I loved everything about it.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Maisey is starting over after a difficult and very public divorce. She thinks that moving to Wit's End might be just what she needs to start over. Flint loves living at Wit's End and teaching in Hell's Bells. He just wants a quiet life. The two of them butt heads and struggle to communicate until they both open their eyes and their minds to see that maybe just maybe they belong together.
Maisey is a fun character. She is a dedicated mother. I love how she becomes part of the Hell's Bells community. She has a really good backstory, and her actions make sense given how her marriage ended. I thought she was a good mother to Junie and I was really rooting for her to get through the rough spots. I could imagine being friends with her. Flint has scars from his upbringing and the world just being plain unfair. I could understand why he wanted to be left alone. His growth during the story was really good. His path to falling in love with Maisey was really sweet and totally believable. There isn't really a bad guy in this story but there are external pressures that push the story forward. I did feel like Junie deserved a chapter to herself at the end. She really goes through the wringer, and she needed a chance to fix the ills in her world. But I like to see characters win when I feel like they've been wronged.
This is a contemporary love story set in a small town called Hell's Bells. This is a love story between two full grown adults with careers and a lot of life history. The small town plays a huge role in the story. If you are looking for a story that is feel good and very sweet, give this a try. It's a fast read and it is well written. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.
Such a lovely and heartwarming story about how life can kick you in the rump so hard one minute but then give you a dozen roses in the next - - or vice versa.
Single mother, Maisey has moved to the ranch that her uncle left her in a last ditch attempt to lick her wounds and regroup following the ugly and very public breakup with her co-star/husband. She feels as if she's failing at life when he leaves her and moves on to a newer and younger woman. Even worse, he doesn't fight very hard to have visitation with their daughter, Juniper. Couples with all of this, Maisey's mother has landed herself in jail and is nowhere around to provide support. Maisey is struggling to keep it together with few people she can lean on. So, her uncle's ranch in a remote area seems like it might be the perfect solution.
When Maisey gets to the ranch, she doesn't anticipate a surly part-time ranch-hand - - and she certainly doesn't expect him to be so young....and handsome. But that's just what she finds when she meets Flint. Hells Bells, Wyoming just got a whole lot more interesting. Now Maisey just has to hope that she and Juniper can hunker down here and let the smoke blow over in her chaotic life - - and just maybe she can build a new life here.
Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.
✨ REVIEW ✨
I’ve come to know that Pippa Grants books really make me loud out loud. Not My Kind of Hero is another one of these!
I really enjoyed this.
It’s a romantic comedy that follows single mum Maisey Spencer who was one half of a successful TV renovator duo with her husband.
When she’s finds out about her husband’s extracurricular activities, she ups and takes their teen daughter to Hell’s Bells, Wyoming to her uncles ranch which has recently just become hers through his will.
What wasn’t included in the will was the grumpy tenant who lives on the property who was super close to her uncle. Thinking that he was some old man the actual age of her uncle, once she meets tenant Flint Jackson, she didn’t expect a gorgeously grumpet strapping man.
Flint, the highschool maths teacher and soccer coach who just happens to get Maisey in his class, knows that there is a reason why Maisey came to Hell’s Bell now after all the years her uncle lived there but why is she moving now? Is it just because she was given the ranch? Or is she going to make a new life here?
Both Flint and Maisey have emotional baggage and I adored the teenager relationship that Maisey had with her daughter. It was relatable AF and the banter in Pippa’s books are just top notch. The way Pippa wrote Maisey was perfect, a strong single mum that lost everything and had to build herself back up and get to know her daughter but also get to know herself now that she is no longer married.
The tension between Flint and Maisey was a slow burn and hot and just chefs kiss.
Definitely a fun and entertaining read!

Can we talk about how hilariously funny this story is? At the same time it tugs on my heart. Maisey and Flint were a match made in small town heaven. Junie was a great add, I’m not usually a fan of single mom romance but am a fan of Pippa Grant. Flint was a total cinnamon roll hottie and I was living for this math teacher soccer coach hero. Great read, don’t miss out and pick this one up.
• small town romance
• grumpy/sunshine
• divorced/single mom
• forced proximity
• found family
• laugh out loud moments
The good o Hell's Bells holds lots of character and the best small-town vibes. Maisey inherits a ranch there and moves in with her teenage daughter, June. Flint already occupies a house nearby, and their meeting was a funny ride..
I love the humor and animal appearances in the Pippa Grant books that I've read thus far. But this one also has a lot of deeper topics. Divorce. Trying to find yourself. Teenager navigating parents' divorce and the relationship with her dad and his new girlfriend...and so much more.
Love the connection of the two main characters. The tension that leads to an awesome connection. Them both putting June first always. Such a great developing relationship. A must-read!
