The Jockey and Her Horse by Sarah Maslin Nir and Raymond White is inspired by the true story of the first black female jockey, Cheryl White. It is number two in the Once Upon a Horse series.

I felt that this book was both informational and entertaining. Although I call myself a horse-girl, I had never heard of Cheryl White, and I felt her story was inspiring. I think young readers, especially horse-lovers, will love this chapter book!

The perspective changes throughout the story. Readers will hear from a horse’s perspective, Cheryl’s perspective, and third-person narration. I found it fascinating that Cheryl’s brother, Raymond, co-authored this book.
