In the Beyond you choose which path Mario Rivera takes through his adventure- but you can’t prevent his death (I tried)- because that’s just where his crazy journey in the great beyond begins. The goal is to help Mario make his way to a distant castle, but to get there you’ll have to help Mario navigate through magical doors and activate them using books you’ll find along the way. The method of adding the book’s call number to your page number took me a few tries but once I got it, I found it quite fun, clever and makes this story feel more like a game. Jason Shiga is incredibly creative and the non-linear aspect of this book will keep you rereading in search of the perfect ending.

From picking which roller coaster to ride to which book in a strange library to pick, this book has many paths. Some lead to loneliness or wealth or romance. If you are lucky, they will lead to the castle you’ve always dreamed of.

I had a great time reading the first book and this was the same. There is humor and puzzles to solve and help, if you know where to look. The art is decent and the book is easy to navigate.

I loved Meanwhile by Jason Shiha so I decided to give this a go. I have not read Leviathan, the first book in the series. I received a digital copy for review and it was difficult with the choose you adventure format. For me it would have been a little easier with a hard copy. That being said... the artwork is laid out nicely and not crowded. It was just hard for me to follow the story.

This is a great second book in Shiga’s Adventuregame Comics series! It is clever and has enough twists and turns to keep even the most engaged elementary school aged child interested and wanting more. The problem solving and logical reasoning that this book/game requires make it an expectedly education experience as each player/reader explains their thinking and reminds others of the evidence behind their reasoning. All around fun and witty!
