The Ghost Ship is the third novel following the adventures and trials of a Hugenot family in 17th century France and the Netherlands. Well researched, atmospheric with strong characters in Louise Joubert, mistress and commander of The Ghost Ship and her close companion Gilles. A slow read til the final third of the novel, I look forward to read in the next in the series.

I was excited to read this book as I’ve read many of Kate Mosse’s books before. This was a bit disappointing unfortunately. It was a page turner and I did read it quickly but there was nothing much to it. The characters are very thinly drawn with little nuance. With her previous work , particularly The Languedoc Trilogy, I learned a lot about the history and the country and actually went to the area to visit some of the places. This book will be forgotten very soon

The third book in The Joubert Family Chronicles certainly does not disappoint.

As with the previous stories in the series which I loved, The Ghost Ship features a strong central female character. Louise Reydon-Joubert, grand daughter of Minou and Piet has always wanted to be commander of her own ship. No easy task for a woman In such a male dominated world.

The story begins in 1610 and takes us with Lousie as she moves to fulfill her ambition, falls in love and comes to terms with some ghosts from her past

Kate Mosse has such a talent for world building that it really puts you into the story to the extent you can almost smell the sea and hear the gulls. Obviously well researched and it is rich in detail (but never too much) relating to shipping and trade in 17th century Europe

You could read this as a stand alone though it will be a richer experience if you have read the first two in the series.

One small detail but something I appreciated greatly was the snippets of history relating to Las Palmas, Tenerife etc Places I have only really considered as pretty holiday destinations have become so much more after learning something of their rich history.

The Ghost Ship is a story of love, revenge and adventure and a fabulous addition to the series. Above all though it is an excellent, immersive tale from a master storyteller.

Thanks to Pan MacMillan and Netgalley for the chance to read an early copy

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to review this book. I am a fan of Kate Mosse and this didn't disappoint me. I had previously enjoyed the 2 earlier books about the Joubert family and this was another well written book. Louise the main character is a very strong women who is unusual for the times. She is single and owns a ship that she goes onto Captain. Gilles is another unusual character, but equally we written.
I was fully invested in the story from the start but felt slightly let down by the ending. I hope that there will be more from Kate Mosse.

Kate Mosse's books are always a joy to read, Very well researched and written. Hadn't read one for a while so was very pleased to read this.

As always, Kate Mosse's research is second to none. I have been a fan since Labyrinth and although I wouldn't normally read third in a series without reading the first two, she is too much of a draw. I enjoyed this book for the most part but I was disappointed by the ending which seemed too quick and, for me, a little unsatisfactory. I feel that another book is needed to tie up the story.

It also wasn't quite what I expected. With a title, The Ghost Ship, I expected that to take centre stage but actually most of the story is on dry land and the ship doesn't appear until quite late on. Gilles is referred to in quite a strange way once their secret is revealed to Louise, the facade is maintained throughout. I understand this is necessary for the public but not between to two main characters.

That said, the period and setting is vividly brought to life as you would expect from this author and I'm still a fan.

How can I add praise to one of the masters of historical fiction. Kate Mosse is the doyenne of her craft. This book Ghost Ship is the continuation of the Joubert family. From the beginnings during the Albigensian crusade to now in the seventeenth century the family changes and moves on in the turbulent tides - this time on the high seas fighting slavery. Its a love story, a revenge story and one of bravery of women in the man's world. I read to get totally enthralled by and escape into.

This is the third novel in the Burning Chambers trilogy that follows the fortunes of the Joubert Family. Set in the early seventeenth Century its setting moves between Amsterdam, France and the Canary Islands and the infamous Barbary Coast. It is a story featuring strong women and, unusually for the period, a woman in command of the eponymous Ghost Ship. This is at heart a swashbuckling adventure story and a History lesson rolled into one!

I was so excited to be granted the third book in this wonderful series which traces the history of The Huguenot Reydon-Joubert family in 17th Century Europe.
This one is about Piet and Minou’s granddaughter, Louise and is a real swashbuckling tale of ships, pirates and adventure which takes place in France, Amsterdam, and the Canary Islands. As ever the history which is central to this this book is incredibly well researched and interesting.
It is also the story of a secret romance that cannot be revealed to anyone: it just would not be accepted in the 1600s.
At the heart of it is a woman in a man’s world, trying to live her life as she sees fit without being beholden to men who have all the power.
I loved Louise who was a great female protagonist: at first resentful that she cannot captain her own ship she is eventually able to become “capitana”and lead her men on the ghost ship, protecting cargo vessels from the pirates and slave ships.
Her behaviour as a strong woman leads her into some difficult situations and her feelings for Gilles nearly become her undoing. My heart was in my mouth at several points in the book- I was hoping Louise would escape her enemies but it was not at all clear.
The ending left the door open for the reader to learn more about her life- I just hope I don’t have to wait too long as it’s difficult to remember what happened in earlier books when there is such a big gap!
The cover looks beautiful and I’m sure it will be very eye catching in bookshops.
I would definitely recommend The Ghost Ship to fans of Kate Moss and lovers of historical fiction. It helps if you have read the previous novels but it could just as easily be read as a stand alone novel.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc.

I have really enjoyed this series of books by Kate Mosse, with my only issue being remembering what happened in the earlier novels as publishing dates seem to have been spread out. Louise is a lovely feisty heroine and there are plenty of villains to boo. The sections in La Rochelle were particularly interesting for me as it is somewhere I have visited on a number of occasions, and I am aware of it's importance as a Huguenot stronghold in the 17 th century.

The historical detail reminds the reader of how much we have progressed; in particular the travel times, although wind power is still slow. It is also interesting to be reminded that there has always been a white slave trade. Finally, it seems that the door has been left open for a sequel exploring the final years of Louise's life. Hooray!

Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.

The Ghost Ship is third in the series of novels inspired by the seventeenth century Huguenot diaspora. The novels travel from France during the sixteenth century to the Cape of Good Hope by way of Rochelle, Amsterdam and the Canary Islands.

The third novel begins in Paris after Louise Reydon- Joubert travels with Minon her grandmother and Piers , her grandfather, to claim her inheritance. She ends up a wealthy woman and entrepreneur in La Rochelle, a Huguenot stronghold. She loves ships and has purchased The Old Moon from her aunts friend’s fleet and but as a woman she cannot captain it.

Gilles Barenton ,the nephew of a wealthy merchant, comes into her orbit , both in fear of his uncle’s murderer. Their lives become entwined as they set sail for the Canaries. Gilles is not what he seems which provides a part of the jeopardy contained within this thrilling story. Their characters are brilliantly defined. Their adventures will keep the reader on the edge of their seat wanting more. This is a great adventure packed with delightful characters and with villains. It is a meticulously structured novel that pitches a reader from one thrilling episode to another. The political background fascinates both Huguenot and Inquisition and it is carefully absorbed into the novel’s narative. The Ghost Ship is a wonderful tale with an unusual background and jam-packed with emotion. It is a fabulous conclusion to an excellent thought provoking Trilogy but wouldn’t it be wonderful if it were to continue!

This was such a good book. I love historical fiction, especially when it is about eras/ situations that I previously knew nothing about and this was definitely one of those books. It was so well researched and so compelling in its narrative that not only did I love reading it but I felt that I learned too. A really enjoyable read and perfect for any fans of historical fiction.

The E-Book could be improved and more user-friendly, such as links to the chapters, no significant gaps between words and a cover for the book would be better. It is very document-like instead of a book. A star has been deducted because of this.

This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you very much to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.

3.5/5.

The Ghost Ship is book 3 in the Burning Chambers series, and as the saga of the Reydon-Joubert family continues, Minou and Piet's granddaughter Louise comes into her inheritance.

10 years later.
Louise is the "secret" owner of a cargo ship and hosts a farewell dinner party for the captain who is retiring when she meets a troubled young man called Gilles with some secrets of his own.

This was a fabulous read. Kate Mosse is a fantastic storyteller who can bring historical fiction to life. I felt like I was sailing on board with the crew of the ghost ship.
Thank you, NetGalley and publishers, for the ARC

A fantastic book with detailed historical research, but as a background, rather than great chunks, that blends easily into the story. It is the tale of Louise and Gilles, who has a secret. I will not mention any more plot details or I risk spoiling the novel. I cannot recommend this novel too highly to all who love historical fiction. I would give it more stars if I could but I am limited to five. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for giving me a copy of the book, it was a great story and I really enjoyed it.

The Ghost Shop by Kate Moss

The Barbary Coast, 1621. A mysterious vessel floats silently on the water. It is known only as the Ghost Ship. For months it has hunted pirates to liberate those enslaved during the course of their merciless raids, manned by a courageous crew of mariners from Italy and France, Holland and the Canary Islands.
But the bravest among them are not who they seem. The stakes could not be higher. If arrested, they will be hanged for their crimes. Can they survive the journey and escape their fate?
The 3rd outing in the series of books by this fantastic author. What I enjoy most of all are the wonderful strong , fiesty, female characters as they find themselves in a man's world where women were mainly see as the chattels of men . Not these !
Brilliant , brilliant , brilliant.

Louise Reydon-Joubert is a defiant, fearless adventurer. Owner of the Old Moon, a vessel out of Amsterdam, she is more than confident to take charge when the captain dies in mysterious circumstances.

From the start, with a young woman in Paris to claim her inheritance, this book is full of adventure and spirit, with the main protagonist, Louise, far ahead of her day. Her heroic schemes and plans, along with her fight for justice hold no bounds.

A truly remarkable story of epic proportions, a real page turner. Totally absorbing from the off, I couldn’t read this fast enough to see what happened next. The settings are beautifully depicted, the characters and their exploits superbly told, a real gem.

This is the third book in this series, and not having read the previous two I thought I may be a bit lost. Not at all, it made no difference whatsoever, a complete standalone, though I shall now definitely seek out the other books in the Joubert Family Chronicles.

Outstanding, Kate Mosse at her very best.

Thank you NetGalley.
