What a great and fun book! The mix of all the paranormal entities in one book was something I initially thought was weird but it worked! 😂 This was my first Olivie Blake book and it won't be my, last.
Olivie Blake has done it AGAIN. At this point I am convinced they cannot write anything bad. A blast as always and I can’t wait to see what we get next!!
Olivie Blakes writing never fails to amaze me. I adore every single thing she writes, this had me hooked from the opening line, I loved every second of this.
Olivie Blake does it again in one of her best novels! I’m obsessed with her writing and her writing style, it is truly unique and beautiful to read. I highly recommend her books to anyone obsessed with fantasy, romance and morally grey characters!
Well this was fun. A vampire, a ghost, assorted demons and death himself. Although it was fun ot was also quite complex. The author did a good job of creating a whole other world and slowly dropping in bits of the backstory.
The vampire is trying to sell a house but the house is haunted. She employs a medium to help get rid of the ghost but it doesn't quite go to plan. I'm really keen to read some more by this author and already have Atlas Six on my tbr pile.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC!
After reading The Atlas Six last year and not really enjoying it too much, compared to everyone else, I was determined to give Blake's work a second chance. But I think that it's just not for me. I found Masters of Death to be very complex and hard to follow, and also a little flat at the same time if that makes any sense. It just didn't pull me in at all. But I think that if you enjoy her work and you are an avid fantasy reader then you will probably love this!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
If you’re a fan of Olivia Blake then this is a book for you.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'Masters of Death' by Olivie Blake.
This isn't my first rodeo with Miss Olivie Blake and it certainly won't be my last but my goodness, she really needs to write longer books because I need more of her writing in my life. 'Masters of Death' is quickly paced writing mixed with beautiful art and characters you grow to be invested in. Personally, I enjoyed the fact that Blake made Death a real person (I've always been one to adore a humanised Death, especially in books such as the Discworld series) and this Death was interesting to me and perfect.
Overall, this story was a good one and I loved it.
A complex plot (that I'm not fully sure I understood) but enjoyable none the less. I like the characters and their sassy, witty, clever dialogue. There’s loads of dry humour and sarcasm which really made enjoy the dialogue scenes. It felt like a whole new story so I wasn’t sure what to expect which I loved, every character had it’s own quirks. The writing is in Olivie Blake style, which is poetic and lengthy and mostly character driven, so if you liked that style in her other books you’ll enjoy this. There is a lot going on, but broken into nice short chapters which really helps.
Thankyou to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan, Tor for a free arc in exchange of an honest review.
Olivie Blake really draws me into her books with her characters! This book has many and i did have to note down names and a few little details about each but that really didn't take away from the story for me. The characters interact with each other like ping pong and the whole book gave me a feeling that i was there in their bickering like an unseen ghost.
The whole book felt like a riddle, I was asking questions throughout and always wondering how the characters are involved and how they're stories are going to weave together!
There was a little bit of a lull in the actual story line during the middle, but given I'm more character focused and Olivie writes them so well, i didn't really mind this!
I will definitely be reading this again, and because of this and the fact i liked the character dynamics so much i will be rating it 5 stars... and on re-read maybe ill understand the game a little bit more! HA
The premise of the book really stood out to me and I was incredibly excited to read it. The characters and storyline were interesting, they had a great dynamic and kept me entertained. However, I did not like the writing because I found it too dialogue based which meant that the pacing and description was off.
That being said, I did enjoy reading it and love other Olivie Blake books
I really enjoy Olivie Blake’s style of writing, which Is what always draws me in to her books.
This story involves demons, vampires, archangels, a demigod, a ghost the godson of Death and Death himself.
Tick, tick, tick and tick!!
It starts off brilliantly, Vi is a vampire who turns into a cat at night and is a real estate agent by day. (Hilarious!) The house she’s trying to sell is haunted by the ghost of Tom Parker who was killed and can’t seem to move on.
We are then introduced to Fox D’Mora, a mortal and godson of Death who has lived several lifetimes.
What I didn’t enjoy, unfortunately, was 40% - 60% where the story felt like a whole lot of waffle. A lot of talk and lead up to the ‘immortals game’ By the time we get to the details of the game later on in the book, it still doesn’t make a whole lot of sense or how the game is won or lost.
There really are some awesome parts to this book and I loved the concept, it just felt a little dragged out.
Still a great read and much enjoyed.
I can't really say I enjoyed much of this book only that the characters were really funny. I always feel bad rating 1 stars but I really didn't connect with the story, found it quite mundane and confusing, the games concept would have been good but I just didn't feel like it was executed well.
After reading Atlas Six by Olivia, it was a pleasure to be given the chance to ready Masters of Death! Outstanding job by Olivia Blake once again!
Olive Blake does it again! I have loved this author since The Atlas six and have been sooo excited to read this! Thank you so much Netgalley for the arc
Firstly I would like to thank Pan Macmillan and the author Olivia Blake for access to masters of death.
The review I am going to make is an honest review regardless of the access I received for this book. It should be noted I was not paid for this review and ensure honesty in all my reviews.
I loved the Atlas six book so was very excited to have access to this fantasy book. This book is about a vampire estate agent selling a house with a murdered ghost (sounds like it ticks most supernatural boxes!). She hires a medium to rectify the ghost situation but Fox is a fraud and also the godson of death.
This book has so many secrets I kept turning the page and being shocked where the story went needs – angels, death, gods, vampire, werewolves, daemons – you name it this book has it. Wish the writing had followed a more linear path.
Thank you NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for the opportunity to read this book.
This is my first book by this author.
My overall impression is a good one..
This book has a great storyline and plenty of likeable bold characters.
I found it a really enjoyable read, I would recommend this books
thank you netgalley and pan macmillan for a review copy
5⭐️
I think this is one of my favourite books I have read by Olivie Blake. There are so many secrets and so many unknowns throughout that are beautifully written and revealed. This book follows Fox D’Mora godson of Death and Vi Malek a real estate agent who is trying to sell a haunted house. There are so many amazing characters in this book that I would definitely read about more, like
Olivie Blakes other books this one was written brilliantly. The whole world had dimension and once I finished I just wanted to start it again!!
Olivie Blake is such a great weaver of stories and as a fan of the Atlas Paradox series, this one was a must read.
I loved the supernatural element of this. We had angels, death, Greek gods, vampires, fae, werewolves, reapers, deamons and more. It was great.
Although I have to admit, it can be quite hard keeping up with her writing at times- it is not linear! It seems to dart about and twist on the head of a coin before succinctly returning and slightly leaves my brain whiplashed. It’s one of those reads where I felt like I needed all my brain cells to keep hold of the flitting story development. And there does seem to be a propensity to include brackets an awful lot.. But it didn’t detract too much away from the story. Which in itself, was great.
I did struggle with the concept of ‘the game’ though which also I didn’t seem to follow or understand all that well. I wasn’t sure quite what it was and how it was played, just the rule of ‘don’t lose’ but given it was such a fundamental part to the story, I was confused. It felt like a fair bit of work to keep track of the ins and outs and there was some points I wasn’t too sure what was going on. But it was a clever concept.
The relationship between Fox and Brandt was just perfect. It made for such good reading!
It’s hard to rate as I really did enjoy the story and was so intrigued all the way through. It made for addicting reading. I’m always excited to see what Olivie Blake will create next!
I’ll read Olivie’s shopping list if she’d let me. Her writing is just so perfect to me, I’ve never read a single one of her books I’ve not loved!
