Loved this brilliant book a loving story you love beautifully written loved the characters. A heart full of love and laughter in this book you enjoy. Loved learning how pretty time is and all the fun dating aspects and dates in this book. I fought it was fun and cute loved every paged.
I cannot tell you how excited I was to see that this was coming out, as When in Rome was probably my favourtie romance of last year, and I completely fell in love with the town of Rome and its residents, particularly the Walker family and its siblings. Focusing on Annie as the female protagonist this time, I loved the contrast between her sweetness and Will's gruffness, and her flower shop didn't sound strange in the slightest (unlike some other popular romances...). This book honestly put such a smile on my face at times, and I found myself getting very invested in the budding relationship - when Will and Amelia infiltrated Annie's date I honestly gasped in delight, which isn't a level of connection I find too often when reading romances. I really hope that Adams continues on with the series until all the Walkers have found their matches, because I can't get enough!
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline for this ARC! I was super excited to read this one after thoroughly enjoying the first book in this series When in Rome.
This is the second book in a romance series (they could be read as standalones if you wanted) that takes place in the small town of Rome, Kentucky. This one follows Annie who is the sister of Noah from the first book and Will is a bodyguard for Amelia from the first book. Annie is seen as the classic good girl by everyone who knows her. Her dream is to get married and have kids just like her parents but she struggles with dating. Enter Will Griffin, he hops from place to place with his job and always has a different woman in his bed. This makes him the perfect candidate to teach Annie how to date so she can find the perfect man. The only problem is they start to develop feelings for each other and Will doesn’t believe in love…or so he thinks.
Okay so overall this was a cute read. I love the setting and the characters in these books and I enjoyed seeing Amelia and Noah again. I loved the chemistry between the two main characters and I rooted for them as a couple which is always important for me in a romance. Will is the perfect male love interest, he’s so communicative and respectful and I also enjoyed seeing Annie’s character growth.
My problem with this is I just felt so bored and it felt kind of repetitive. It felt like most of the book was just a repeat of the same inner monologue. “I need to get these feelings out of my head” “I don’t know what she’s doing to me” etc. I also think this is the kind of storyline that would have benefited from a little more spice. Sarah Adams writes closed door romances which is fine and I enjoy those but this particular plot line needed a bit of spice in my opinion.
I would still definitely recommend this though and I am hoping there will be more books in this series! This came out on 2nd May 2023 so you can grab it now!
“I am the quiet one in my family. The one with her nose always in a book because she prefers worlds where she doesn't have to interact with other humans. It's so much easier to read about relationships than to foster them. Less dangerous too. I can't offend anyone written into a book. I can't say the wrong thing. And book characters don't make judgments about me.”

I adore Sarah Adams books! They are just the most perfect (no pun intended) sweet and FUNNY little romcoms that I would recommend to any book lover looking for a steamy, yet closed door romance! I am always guaranteed a fun time when picking up one of these books, and I will always adore them 🥹
Put this on your TBR, you won’t regret it!
In this one, we go back to Rome, Kentucky and follow Annie through her time figuring out the dating scene. Annie is classed as the towns “good girl” who never does anything wrong… but then along comes Will, a hot bodyguard who teaches Annie how to date, and wants to show her that she can be anybody that she wants to be.
(Thank you so much to @headlineeternal for kindly gifting me the ARC of this book!)

Annie and Will's romance came unexpectedly and in my personal opinion, I think I may have loved them even more than Amelia and Noah! Two people who liked each other, but didn't believe they were good enough for one another - this was a whirlwind romance that had tension OFF THE CHARTS. Sarah Adams took the good girl/bad boy trope to a higher level and it was absolute perfection. I loved returning to the small town of Kentucky, Rome and being back with the characters who I have grown to love.
Annie and Will's story was one definitely worth telling and everybody should be reading the blossoming romance between these two beautiful lost souls.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% my own.
First of all I need to recognise how much better than When In Rome this book is. The writing is maturer and the characters less cringe.
The standout for this book was the main characters and their ability to communicate. This was one of the healthiest demonstrations of love developing I have read.
Parts of the book felt a little bit juvenile and the inner dialogue and actions of characters felt straight out of Wattpad in places.
I’m really hoping for a Madison/James book next in this series and watching Sarah Adams further develop as an author.
A great read. Annie and Will meet when he is temporarily in her home town. He agrees to be her practice boyfriend so she can feel more confident on future dates and find her happy ever after. Will the fake dating lead to more, or just broken hearts?
Oh my goodness this story was absolutely perfection and just what I needed after reading When in Rome. I wasn't sure if a florist mc and a bodyguard was something I wanted to read but it really was! And is probably one of my favourite story's so far this year.
Please give it a go you won't be disappointed!
This was my first time reading Sarah Adams, and I couldn't put it down. Adorable Annie is a bit of a disaster at dating, and when her friend's bodyguard, Will, shows up in their small town, they decide it's a good idea for her to have lessons in dating.
With plenty of laugh-out-loud scenes, this cute small-town romance ticks all the boxes for a great read. The characters are very well written, and for a change in the genre, communication was on point. Don't expect any steamy scenes as it fades to black, but the sexual tension and buildup are off the charts! Funny story: I bought the author's "When in Rome" for my trip to Italy, only to find out it was Rome, Kentucky. I ended up reading something else instead, but I will now definitely pick it up since I enjoyed this one so much! I highly recommend it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to have the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Very cute story. Will definitely look at some of this author’s other books. I really felt invested in the relationships and loved how well fleshed out all the characters were. More emotional than I was expecting, but in a good way!

Practice Makes Perfect has been out for over a week and all I can say this book is just so cute! We follow Annie who is the youngest sibling and is painted as the angel (she can do no wrong and innocent) and Will who is known as a serial Dater. Will ends up helping Annie out as his practice coach.
The chemistry between them was done so magnificently. You can see the instant connection. There banter was great and I loved every little interactions between them.
I found Annie to be relatable and I love her character development throughout the story. I loved Will's POV. A new fave book bf. The communication was EXCELLENCE. It was fast pace with no spice and it was the perfect book to break up my rhythm of spicy books. The chapters were short and I was HOOKED. All I can say it was a cute fun read and I loved Sarah's writing.
The only little pickle I had was that the characters were close to their 30s so I found the language quite young and Annie acts like she in her early 20s, sometimes.
Overall a cute book and I'm so excited to see who next in the series. ✨️💗
💗Read if you like
- opposite attract
- fades to black
- cute romcom
- small town romance
Thank you @netgalley for the eARC. ✨️💗
I adored this book. This is my first book from Sarah Adams and will not be my last. It was so fun from start to finish and I just adored every single second off it.
Annie is quiet, keeps to herself and wants to find that special someone. After getting called boring from her last first date she thinks maybe she is the reason why she isn’t finding some so, there is a plan to help her become the woman she is and for that she needs Will. Bodyguard to Amelia who is engaged to Annie’s brother. Covered in tattoos and one of the sexiest bodyguards. He knows he needs to stay away from her but he can’t help but keep coming back and when the opportunity arises for him to help her he does but there is only so much you can teach someone before the lines blur between friendship and something more…
I just devoured this book and I really liked Annie. To her family she was this sweet shy girl who always said yes and helped anyone but to Will he knows there is something more under the surface and wants to help her not only feel confident and sexy but to come out of her shell more and do things for herself. The banter, the tension just everything in this book was fantastic and I cannot wait to read more from Sarah especially about some other characters. A new favourite romance read that will have you grinning from start to end.
I am a fan of Sarah Adams writing after reading her other books 'The Cheat Sheet' and 'When in Rome'. She fast became an auto-buy author for me and Practice Makes Perfect is simply a beautiful and heart warming book.
Annie is the sister of Noah (MMC in When in Rome) and she is our FMC in this book. She is the sweet introverted character who doesn't want to upset people so goes with everyone else's view of her. Will is our MMC in this story and he is the bodyguard to Amelia (FMC in When in Rome).
Watching these two character battle their demons and face their true feelings was a joy to read. I was laughing out loud and smiling throughout the book, and Will is the perfect book boyfriend..
Sarah Adam's writing is beautiful and she writes such relatable characters which you can't help but fall in love with. I hope that everyone picks up a copy of her books and dives into the Sarah Adams universe, because you will not be disappointed.
Practice Makes Perfect is a beautiful and amazing read which makes your heart skip and makes you become giddy with emotions. Although I have read the Arc, I already have the paperback to read again.
Thank you Headline Eternal for sending me a review copy of Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams.
When in Rome (book 1 in the Rome series) was one of my absolute favourites of 2022 so when Practice Makes Perfect was announced I was immediately excited. Fans of book 1 will be pleased to know the Rome residents are still at full force with their small town shenanigans and this book has the same cosy feel.
I cried a bit reading Practice Makes Perfect (PMP) but in a good my heart feels all melty kind of way. I really related to a lot of the expectations Annie’s faced with because of the box people have put her into. Annie’s obsession with historical pirate romances added an extra layer of fun to her POV and made me like her even more.
MMC Will was top notch swoony book boyfriend material. A tattooed bodyguard with some unresolved issues from his past he was the perfect guy to help Annie break out of her usual and help her gain confidence.
I’m obsessed with the whole dating lessons trope and it was executed so well in PMP.
I will officially read anything Sarah Adams chooses to write! 💕
Read For:
• Dating lessons & “I won’t catch feelings” vibes ❤️
• Small town setting 🏡
• Florist FMC & bodyguard MMC, dual POV
• Gentle shoulder kisses 🥺
• Pirate fantasies 🏴☠️
• Sibling relationships
• Appearances from book 1’s MCs
• A wild petition from Rome’s residents 😬
Rating: 5/5🌟
Steam Level: 2.5/5🔥
3.25/5 stars! I like this author's story as a very PG clean, simplistic love story. Everything I have read by her has great bones, but the follow-through is not a great fit for me. It feels very high school but with adult characters as far as the spice goes. Maybe I've just been spoiled by the spicy writers out there; this would likely appeal to teen readers.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Sarah Adams I think I love you a little bit more with every book you write. This story made my little introvert heart sigh with delight.
I am so so so pleased we got to go back to Rome! Annie and Will just made me smile so much. This was one of those stories to get lost in and forget the world around you. I adored the small town vibes mixed with fake dating, bodyguard romance and a dose of exploring who you really are. It was just a big hug in book form. Annie was such a great FMC. She is shy untill you get to know her and struggles to get close to men. In steps Will her brothers fiancé's bodyguard who steps in to help teach her how to relax and be herself on dates. These 2 were adorable together. Annie pushes Will to open and and Will helps Annie realise that she's pretty damn perfect as she is and that she can enjoy what she loves for herself. They were a great match and I loved how the story panned out especially with the meddling small town neighbours. There were some great laugh out loud moments and some that really tugged at my heart strings. I think this is my favourite book by Sarah yet and I really really really hope we get to go back to Rome again, I'm not ready to leave just yet.
I'm so excited to have found a new favourite romance author. This is my first book by Sarah Adams, but have already loaded some of her others onto my Kindle.
Practice Makes Perfect follows Annie, a lovely girl, and a flower shop owner, who's terrible at dating. We meet her on a date that goes horribly wrong, and the guy fakes a call to get away. Annie desperately needs some help with her dating skills, and there's no one better to help her with that, than her sister's bodyguard (she's famous and all that). He's a guy who doesn't believe in love, having seen his parents fight all of his childhood. Now his brother is about to get married, and he's mad.
This book brought so much joy, I felt Annie was portrayed like the normal average girl, and that made her relatable. I laughed so much, yet this book also went deep.
This is almost completely closed doors, but it is definitely mentioned. I'd say a 2/5 on the spice scale.
Even though When in Rome is the first book in this series, they can be read as a stand-alone as well. I didn't even know there was another book, until after I finished. Sarah Adams does a great job introducing the characters, and you miss nothing when reading them out of order. I will however go back and read When in Rome.
Oh we’re back in Rome and it feels so good!
Sarah Adams is easily an autobuy author, topping my favourites and is the kind of author that when her book arrives, you drop everything and immediately pick hers up.
Annie Walker wants to find her person, the one who will complete her life, but when a date calls her boring, she starts to wonder if she’s the problem. Will Griffin is a sexy tattooed security agent and is back to protect Amelia Rose. He plans on staying away from Annie and any attachments to the quiet town of Rome, well until he’s enlisted to help Annie with her dating life. There’s some practice dates that are strictly educational only, but the lines start to blur as their friendship grows…
Oh honestly this book is EVERYTHING! It’s got fake (or practice) dating, friends to lovers, bodyguard romance, opposites attract, small town romance, dual POV, and just the most incredible characters.
You fall in love with Annie and Will just as much as you fall in love with Rome itself (unless you’ve already read When in Rome and you’re already in love with the place like me). The sexual tension, the humour, the pirate romance, the banana pjs, the way he takes care of her. I mean alllllll of it 😍 Will has easily made his way to the top of my book boyfriends list!
I already want to reread it and want to go back to Rome, Kentucky. I will now be patiently (well trying to be) waiting for our next Rome instalment and to see what Sarah Adams does next!
Practice Makes Perfect is my first novel by Sarah Adams and, without a doubt, one of my favorite books of the year. The protagonists, the story, the romance, the setting, the writing… everything is perfect!
What I loved most about this book is the two fantastic protagonists. Annie and Will couldn’t be more different and yet they are perfect for each. I adored the character of Annie because she is authentic and realistic and I could really relate to her (in real life we would be great friends). Born and raised in the small town of Rome (Kentucky, not Italy), Annie quietly runs her flower shop and prefers reading a book to talking to people. Introvert, quiet, socially anxious, secret lover of historical romances with pirates, Annie’s always done what was expected of her. She only seems to be her true self when she is with Will, a bodyguard who loves adventure and traveling around the world. The two of them couldn’t be more different: Annie is looking for a man who lives in Rome, has a stable job, is supportive of her career, loves his family and wants one of his own; on the other hand, Will can’t wait to get out of Rome, hasn’t talked to his parents in years, and doesn’t believe in marriage. But opposites attract and Annie and Will are attracted to each other and when Annie needs help navigating the dating world, who is better than the gorgeous, flirtatious, and badass bodyguard to tutor her?
I loved those two characters together. The way they develop a close friendship, how they are honest with each other and try to fight their growing attraction… it gave me so many emotions!
The writing is addictive and the small-town setting is picture perfect. A town where everyone knows everyone, where nothing remains a secret for long, where councils are held at dawn to vote on other people’s personal business is the appropriate setting for some of the most hilarious scenes in the book.
Sexy, witty, and smart, I couldn’t put this novel down. I laughed so much, I highlighted my favourite parts (which was most of the book), and I wanted this book to be twice as long because I couldn’t get enough of the characters and their story. I give Practice Makes Perfect 5 stars and more and I am going to recommend it to everyone. Now I only need to read the author’s previous books while waiting for the next novel in this incredible and magnificent series!
I just love the small-town, everyone knows everyone, Gilmore Girls vibes in this book - it makes you feel cosy and wholesome which compliments the romance so well.
I really liked Annie (fellow introvert here👋🏼) and how it became about more than just romance/finding a man for her. I thought it was great to see her shy, introverted side come out of its shell a bit more and open up whilst still being true to herself. Her inner monologue type thoughts also had me cracking up more than once, we love a relatable awkward overthinker.
It explored some deeper personal topics than a typical rom-com whilst still keeping that lighter tone throughout which was great, and I couldn’t get enough of Annie and Will together. I thought the whole ‘practice dates’ aspect was such a cool way to explore their growing relationship, a refreshing twist after the number of ‘fake dating’ romance books i’ve read😅. The level of communication in this book is top tier and I can’t say how happy that makes me. The miscommunication trope often feels unrealistic and irritates me in books, so to have a complete 180 and see real communication was so good!
One minor thing - it doesn’t explicitly say that this is book 2 in a series, however I do feel like I’m missing out on being completely enveloped in the book because I haven’t read When In Rome yet (which is my bad!). The scene setting is lacking ever so slightly; I’m guessing this was built up in more detail in WIR so Adams didn’t want to be repetitive, but it just made it a bit more difficult to picture everything. I think for a small town romance where the town itself is almost like it’s own character, this is quite an important element to lay out. It also cropped up again in all the various side characters that we just seem to know off the bat, however I found myself picking their intertwined lives up quickly and I love the quirky additions of the different townspeople.
I really appreciated the writing style and the pacing of the story arc, it just felt so easy to read I was in a great flow from chapter to chapter - a new auto-buy author for me I think! Overall, a cute small-town romance that captured my attention with a refreshing romance plot and well-rounded characters.
