Honestly, any book that makes it okay to potty is automatically added to my shelf! As a mom of three boys and a serious girl, this book was such a fun relief - I read it to my kids and they laughed and laughed and were able to make some really great connections to our little guy that cried poop.
LOVE this one, will add it to our shelf asap!
💩 This book is so cute! Poop in a pool – pretty gross, right? It will make kids laugh and parents will definitely sympathize with Dad!
💩 But the true message in this story is about acceptance and not being alone. Once the boy has his accident in the pool, other people (kids and adults) start to share their stories about accidental poops at inopportune moments. Accidents do happen, and when you gotta go, you gotta go, right?
💩 In the story the family has to run up 168 stairs to get to the bathroom each time the boy says he has to poop. They go up and down these stairs several times in the story. Every time they meet unique characters who keep getting stranger and sillier as the story goes on. The people on the stairs are hilarious!
💩 If your child has ever had a poop accident, particularly in a pool, this book is for them. It is always good for kids to know they are not alone and that accidents happen to all of us.
Thank you @Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for an eARC of this book, which I’ve reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This is a great retelling of the old crying wolf tale but with a potty humour twist (what kid doesn’t like that?!). If you’re a parent you’ve definitely been in a situation similar to this! My kids were captivated by this silly story right through to the end. My daughter was perplexed about why he kept saying he had to go potty but then didn’t though. Oh, the irony 😝
Have you ever met a kiddo who does not enjoy poop jokes or poop stories? Yeah, that’s what I thought. All kids love those.
I’m sure all kids will love this one also.
Although, I am no kid and I am on the fence about it.
On a very tiny fence, but it still is a fence.
If you take the story of the boy who cried wolf, rephrase it, and replace some events, you get this story. A story of a boy who cried poop.
And this is my problem here – it has this subtle message that it is not ok not to know what you, a little kid, want to do.
Well, as long as it might be annoying and relatable to the parents, for kids that is equally frustrating, as they are learning and getting to know how their bodies work, all while being made feel like they can’t learn fast enough, can’t grow up fast enough, can’t stop being annoying and just being ridiculed for it. This is how I see it and why I would choose not to read a story like that to my kids – because I see it as ridiculing the kid who is listening to the story. For being a kid. For growing. For learning. For being just like all the kids are. The ending is nice and full of empathy though. So here comes my being on the fence. On one hand, I see it as something full of ridicule, on the other hand, I see so much empathy there.
Otherwise, the book is cute and the drawings, although simplistic, are nice and fit in with the story.
The Boy Who Cried Poop is a modern day parenting tale of The Boy Who Cried Wolf - but instead of the boy getting eaten, he has a poop accident that provides opportunity for those around him to share their bathroom woes. Kindness and taking ownership of our mistakes and accidents are running themes. My 4 year old was scolding him all through the book "Marc! just decide already!" I suppose if the vacation hotel had an elevator, it wouldn't have had the same appeal, but as a parent I was thinking an elevator would've been so helpful, ha!
Illustrations are so engaging with lots to look at. Highly recommend!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Frances Lincoln Children's Books and NetGalley for this ARC
Thank you to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest review!
The Boy Who Cried Poop is a funny children's book intended for children age 3-6. In this story Marc is struggling to decide if he does or does not need to go to the bathroom before swimming in the pool. There are multiple opportunities for children to practice counting and identifying characters that are described in the text. The illustrations are engaging and creative.
Really cute children’s book showing kindness and ownership. A child had an accident in the pool and instead of everyone being mean or making fun of him they just told him stories of what happened when they pooped themselves! Thank you NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for my honest feedback!
This was such a cute read! The artwork was beautiful and the story was fun. I think I also would have been distracted on my trips to potty if I saw all those interesting things on the way there. The message is important for young kids too. This would be a great book to console kids after an accident or remind other kids not to tease someone for one. It takes an embarrassing situation and makes it entertaining and bonding. Would recommend.
I see the premise of the book, but I thought it was a bit far fetched. Perhaps youngsters would enjoy it, but I would not like reading it as a parent. I think there are other books other there that are better.
An instant favorite for my little one. The side characters make it funny, the story is relatable and I appreciate that it normalizes bodily functions for kids. It’s a great book to have for parents who are starting the transition to using potties as it shows empathizing with people of all ages having accidents. And if families are beyond that stage, it’s still a great book to read because don’t we all feel a little irregular sometimes on vacation trips? I’ve been following the author on social media for a while and I’m so happy for her to reach this accomplishment of publishing her first book.
Listen, I haven’t laughed out loud while reading a bed story in a VERY LONG TIME. Tonight was the night that I laughed while simultaneously being the hero during bedtime story time because we got to say the word poop A LOT.
The adorable illustrations and fun cast of secondary characters make this story one you and your kids won’t soon forget!
I read this to my toddler son and he absolutely loved it. Very cute book for little kids. I would definitely buy this and recommend to my friends.
This book is sure to be a hit with young readers who fall into a fit of giggles over potty humor. Narrated by an older sister who just wants to enjoy a day in the pool, this story about a little brother maybe, might possibly need to poop is an enjoyable picture book comedy. In her debut picture book, Requena's humorous and over-the top silly storytelling pairs really well with the colorful and busy illustrations by Guilherne Karsten. I really loved the stairwell scenes in which the family frantically rushes up and down 168 stairs in their attempt to get young Marc to the bathroom and encounters a variety of interesting characters. This book is jam-packed with so much that children will love (there are even pirates!?!) and if you are caregiver who has ever potty trained a child, you will totally relate to the exhausted, frantic father who urgently tries to get his child to the toilet to prevent an accident. This book will make a super fun read for this summer and your little ones will likely ask for "the poop book" on repeat.
Such a cute little book. My son really enjoyed this! The book cover is what originally drew me to this because it reminds me so much of my son. We deff will be adding this to the rotation of stories.
This is a cute story about a boy who everytime he got into the swimming pool thought he had to go poop. So the father would take him up and down the stair to get to the bathroom only to find that the little boy couldn’t go after all. Well after they got back to the pool the little boy told his dad again I really have to go poop well after going up and down the stairs a few times the dad didn’t believe him and what did they soon find but a sinker. After that happens at first everyone was shocked but then other kids started telling their stories about having accidents in their pants. This would be a good book to tell to child so they know sometimes these things just happen.
Thank you to the publisher and to NetGalley for the eARC! A twist on the boy who cried wolf, but instead about using the bathroom. The illustrations are bright and have different textures which make them very appealing.
This is a really good story. I'm a prek teacher and I really enjoyed the story. The illustrations were nice. It has a good message about having accidents. And it could be a good story for comparing and contrasting to the old story The Little Boy Who cried Wolf.
This book is so funny and so relatable. While on vacation, Dad and the kids head to the pool, only for Marc to announce he has to poop. They grab all their stuff and return up the stairs to their motel room, only to discover that it was a false alarm. They return to the pool, only to repeat the entire scenario over and over. Each time they encounter more crazy characters on the stairs. Eventually, Dad can't take it anymore and refuses to go back. But, this time, it isn't a false alarm, and Marc has an accident. Instead of being angry, all the characters share stories of times they've had an accident. The colorful, silly drawings add charm to the books and keep kids coming back to see new details. I love that this book will make kids laugh while also telling them that it's okay to make mistakes.
Thank you NetGalley for this copy in exchange for my honest review. If you’re a parent who’s potty training this book will have you laughing, as it is very relatable. A boy who cried wolf as a potty training book. Very cute
What a cute book!!
The language in the book is great for young kids, and the illustrations are so much fun! I like how it shows there's a whole community that uses the pool and then they come together to help young Marc feel better about his pool poop. This book would be good for young kids who are toilet training, or are perhaps still having accidents, to help remind them that accidents happen, and one day, they will laugh about it too.
a fun read!
