A wonderfully detailed novel. Claire Foy was a faultless narrator who gave depth and warmth as she read the story beautifully. It was such a sad tale and yet made for such an interesting escape. I really enjoyed the audio book and would like to thank the Publishers and NetGalley for allowing me to listen to a really well written story.
I found the story dragged rather a lot which made focusing difficult as it is an epic story. It got confusing with the dual time-frames too. The narrator was fantastic. I am sure if Claire Foy had not been narrating, I may have given up.
I have listened to Kate Morton books before and have enjoyed them so I was looking forward to this one. It's a story spread over 60 years and tells the story of a family tragedy and how this affects the lives of the survivors, mainly Nora and her descendants. I have to say I was not a fan of Nora and couldn't get why no one seemed to realise how controlling she was. I did like Jess and Polly and felt sorry for the latter with her missed opportunities due to Nora.
I liked hearing about Australia and how different it is from the UK, the descriptions of the location were evocative and I want to visit some day.
I guessed one of the plot twists very early on but not the others and although it was a long book it was entertaining and held my attention.
Claire Foy was an excellent choice of narrator, she did not feel the need to try to use strong accents to make each character sound very different but managed to make it clear who was speaking in her reading.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bolindaaudio for the advance copy..
For the most part I loved this, book, I loved the characters, the setting, the flips in timelines and varying memories of events. There is a twist in the story that I guessed very early on, which was disappointing. I wanted to adore Nora and respect her in the way Jess and so many others did, and I just didn’t. I loved Polly and Meg.
This is a seamless memoir based novel, the premise is fantastic, as Is the writing and the narration is beautifully done.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bolinda Audio U.K. for the opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.
This is my first experience of reading anything by Kate Morton and boy does she know how to write a book! It was descriptive, immersive and seriously greatly written. It had such a magical quality to it.
I’ve always struggled to engage in split timeline plots as it’s just a personal preference. Split perspectives, split timelines and the length of the book certainly requires you to slow down and take careful note. This book is a chonk! It wasn’t a drudge though and the book dwindled quickly. Occasionally my brain fogged out whilst listening so I dropped a few threads but that was my own fault. I always managed to regain the thread again. You do need your wits about you though through all the chapters.
It helped the narrator was fab and really helped bring the pages to the reader (or listener). After this one, I certainly will look out for more from this author.
Thank you Bolinda Audio and Netgalley for this Audio. I can not say it was short but it seemed shorter then it really was. Really an epic long story with a book inside. I was lucky to receive the audio. I just listen and listen for few days and I remembered my visit to Australia. So nice written and so tragic story. About family and secrets. It all starts and end there.
Another one I could not put down and devoured in one sitting. I absolutely recommend this book. Be ready for an afternoon or evening of completely neglecting any chores as this one will have you hooked within the first chapter. Lengthy but brilliant!
A very descriptive, dual timeline book. In the past timeline, a mother and her children have been found dead, except for the baby, who has disappeared.
In the present day, a beloved granddaughter has returned home when her grandmother was taken ill and the family secrets come out.
I'm a big fan of Claire Foy, so I loved listening to her give the characters a voice. The audiobook version definitely helped me to be able to finish the book. This is a very slow burn read. If you are not a slow burn fan, then this isn't for you.
