Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ALC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
The Fall is well-written, with plenty of twists and turns along the way, but I thought it was quite slow-paced and at times a little repetitive.
I didn't connect with or particularly like any of the characters. I listened to the audiobook, but unfortunately, the whiny tone of voice the narrator used for the younger cast members grated on me.
The book was entertaining enough, although fairly predictable.
Really enjoyed this. Fast paced, amazing characters and all ties up nicely at the end. Would recommend this book.
Very good book - full of twists and turns and every time you think you have it all worked out, you find you haven't! It is largely plausible - some bits are a bit far fetched but you don't have to suspend belief too far. I enjoyed it and would recommend.
I found this book quite predictable and although had a few twists it wasn’t anything that hadn’t already been done. It was also quite far fetched but I still enjoyed it and liked the narrator.
Narrated by Helen Keeley ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story by Louise Jensen ⭐⭐⭐
There was alot going on in this fast paced story, and if you read once in a while this might be a 5 star read. For me however it was good but not stand out. I didn't particularly like any of the characters for feel a strong sense of emotion to them and their situation.
Overall I would recommend this book and the author but probably would not buy it for a friend.
This was an enjoyable book to listen to partly because of the mystery surrounding who pushed Caily off the bridge but also because of the excellent narration.
There are lots of elements and sub-stories to this book which created additional mystery to an already intriguing story. There are a lot of characters and the book is told from multiple points of view however, whilst you might think this would be confusing, it is anything but ... the narrator does an excellent job of being able to distinguish between each of the characters with subtle changes.
Louise Jenson managed to create a lot of tension and some great plot twists that caught me off guard. The pace worked well for me and I found myself looking for reasons to listen for a bit longer ... even hoping for a traffic jam!!!
Overall, a really good book to read/listen to with loads to hold your interest and my thanks go to HQ an imprint of HarperCollins UK Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen to and share my thoughts of The Fall.
I enjoyed this. It kept a good pace and had me wanting to listen to find out what was going to happen. It was very much centred around two teenagers, so it may have been better to have been aimed at young adults. I found the last 20-25% of the book quite far fetched. I like to be able to have an informed guess at ‘whodunnit’, but there was so much thrown in at the end. I won’t give any of the plot away. I have read books by the author before and will continue to do so, this one just wasn’t for me. The narrator was good and I enjoyed the way the book was read. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the copy of this audio.
I did have to check for the suggested genre for this book because it seemed like I wasn’t the target audience. So my review as a senior is not likely to match a teenagers findings. I unfortunately was bored by the whole teenage angst and social media drama so can only offer a three star rating.
Kate has a surprise 40th party thrown by her family and she feels on top of the world. The next day, her world topples down when her 15 year old daughter, Caily falls off a bridge and badly injured and unconscious in hospital. The police are investigating the accident and turns out not all family members were where they said they were. Is a family member responsible to hurting Caily? Does someone not want for her to wake up and say say is the culprit is?
This book is full or twists and surprises and cleverly written to keep you engrossed. You will want to reading after every chapter. Just when you think you know who the bad guy is, you are left gasping at the next revelation.
This is my first Louise Jensen book and was intrigued by the cover and title when I saw it on netgalley. This story is told in multiple pov's, I did find it a bit long but overall I liked the story and the narrators, I would be interested in other work by her and would recommend this audio book
This is my first book by Louise Jenson and it won't be my last. The main plot of The Fall surrounds the identity of who pushed a young girl from a bridge, with the main suspect being her cousin of the same age, who go to the same school. Their mothers are twins with a bond that is pushed to the limits throughout the course of the investigation. Many family elements are tested and picked at which was interesting to read.
There are many subplots in this that weren't necessary to be honest, so I can understand why some might think it somewhat convoluted, but I felt they added to the intrigue. I didn't guess the outcome at the end. The audio book was fantastically narrated.
Would recommend to others and am grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review.
This was a very enjoyable book. The main premise of this book is trying to find out why Caily fell from the bridge and who pushed her but there is so much more to the book than that. It mainly looks at one extended family with identical twins in the middle, their parents and their daughters. There are a lot of characters in the book and the narrator did a great job of distinguishing who was talking. I did find the voices of Beth and the teenagers a bit grating though.
There are lots of twists and turns in the book and the culprit is not revealed until very late on. I had guessed before then but it did not detract from the reveal as it wasn't so straightforward an event.
The barn scene was a bit far fetched but despite that the writing was very visual and I could picture the scene.
I didn't understand the split of the money and why one got it all but perhaps I didn't listen carefully enough to that part.
Overall this was a really good read/listen with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader interested and guessing. I liked how the end of the chapters and the beginning of the next started with very similar wording. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.
Thank you to NetGallery and HarperCollins UK Audio for the Advanced copy.
I think this mystery is best suited to a YA audience; the majority of characters being teenagers, with all of the friendship group, relationship and social media drama which is common to that age group. The story is told from different PoV's, including flicking back to Caily before her accident/fall, so there is plenty of teenager content. I can't say I was particularly invested in any of the characters, although as the family secrets emerged the story was interesting. It's not particularly a fast paced book, so oftentimes, getting through the story felt like hard going. Despite my lukewarm feelings towards this book, I thank NetGallery and HarperCollins UK Audio for allowing me to get an advanced copy - the book is out on April 27, 2023.
There’s a lot going on in The Fall - so much that it’s difficult to review without spoilers.
The main mystery is who caused a young girl to fall from a bridge, but there are plenty of others: why did the girl’s uncle end up in prison (did he really commit the crime for which he was convicted)?; will the family farm survive?; who is the new farm hand and why has he gone missing?; and what is the terrible secret from years ago at the heart of the family?
Like I said, it’s a LOT, but Louise Jensen handles all the elements and keeps them in balance so each of them intrigues and draws us in.
The only thing that made this is four star rather than a five star read for me was the fire scene in the barn which should have been thrilling but just wasn’t. At no point did I think anyone’s life was actually in peril. Perhaps that was just me, though. 🤷🏻♀️
Would definitely recommend to others and I’m very grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to listen to the audioARC.
This was a really good, easy listen. Very cleverly written and well developed characters. It was an intriguing listen and had the suspense factor. An interesting storyline that unfolded slowly but your given just what was needed. It definitely had my head in a spin with the different scenarios unfolding. But I really love that in a read. Loved the narration and it really added to the experience. Definitely one to put on your TBR list.
Thanks to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK Audio for the opportunity to listen to #TheFall
Wow, what a great listen and story; so full of twists and turns and secrets that it keeps you on the edge of your seat and spits you out exhausted at the end! It was also brilliantly narrated.
A story with a Pandora's box full of secrets and betrayal!
Is it good to hide things from your loved ones even if it is something innocent and what will happen if those secrets come out? The snowball effects can be devastating!
I am definitely going to look out for more books by this author.
Thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins UK audio for access to this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.
Wow what a read!… I was up all night reading this… An absolutely gripping psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the last page… Full of mystery and suspense with twists and turns to keep you on your toes, I was completely hooked… Gives you goosebumps
'The Fall' is a very decent audiobook full of twists and turns. Personally I'd classify this somewhere between family saga and psychological thriller genres.
The plot centres around the family of identical twins Kate and Beth. Both have teenage daughters of the same age. Both daughters are super close and both are keen actresses. They have a big performance coming up, however on the day of a a potential life changing performance, in which the girls could be scouted, one of the girls has an accident that lands her in a coma. This is the catalyst for a multitude of family secrets and suspicions to come to light in a rollercoaster of a listen/read!
Another great book by Louise Jensen and the narration skills of Helen Keeley absolutely do it justice.
My thanks to NetGalley, author, publisher and narrator for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
My thanks to HarperCollins U.K. Audio for a review copy via NetGalley of the unabridged audiobook edition of ‘The Fall’ by Louise Jensen. The audiobook is narrated by Helen Keeley.
In this domestic noir/psychological thriller we are introduced to Kate Granger, who as she enjoys her surprise 40th birthday party, feels like the luckiest woman in the world. Well readers of this genre know that this feeling isn’t going to last.
Indeed, just hours later her fifteen-year-old daughter, Cally, is found unconscious underneath a bridge. She is badly injured and in a coma. The police reveal that they don’t believe it was an accident.
An investigation soon reveals discrepancies in a number of family members and friends alibis. Secrets come to light and the reader is aware of an unknown person who doesn’t want Cally to wake up. No further details to avoid spoilers.
Aside from the central mystery of Cally’s fall, there’s quite a lot going on in the novel including Kate’s parents, Mary and Patrick, who due to various external pressures are having difficulty with keeping their business, Marsh Farm, afloat.
There’s also Kate’s relationship with her twin sister, Beth, as well as the bond between Cally and Tegan, Beth’s daughter. Given Cally’s coma that is mainly explored in flashbacks to events leading up to the fall.
In her endnotes Jensen reflects that she was interested in exploring the cost of living crises in a tight knit family as well as the relationship between cousins.
With respect to the audiobook, Helen Keeley is an experienced audiobook narrator credited with nearly 200 titles. I have enjoyed her reading of a number of novels as she has a rich and melodious voice that quickly drew me into the narrative.
As with other novels by Louise Jensen ‘The Fall’ proved a solid domestic noir/psychological thriller with short chapters and a character-focused plot that held my attention as its various secrets are expertly unravelled.
