Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read and review this book.

Nancy’s inheritance brings the past right back into the present. Questions from long ago are answered but not in the way you’d expect.

When I started this I saw it was the third in a series and I had not read the others so I was cautious as to whether I would like this. Well, I need not have worried. This is very much a standalone book, the characters are the same but Abbott explains connections and previous events so well that it did not matter.
This crime read is set in beautiful Cornwall and the beauty of the landscape really helps balance the darkness and violence of the crimes. This book does get very dark in places which I was surprised at but it is all integral to the plot. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, the plot is exciting and full of hope and despair which kept my interest.
I also really liked the characters, they are all interesting and as I have said, Abbott explains the existing connections well.
Overall, I really enjoyed this dark and thrilling read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline for an advance copy.

Nancy’s sister Lola disappeared many years ago and their mother became ill and Nancy had to take care of her. Then she finds out that her Aunt has left her the cottage in Cornwall when she died so reluctantly she has to go back and relive the trauma of losing her sister. With the help of D.S. Stephanie King will she finally find out what happened to Lola.

There are a lot of twists and turns to this book, I have to say having read all Rachel’s books my favourite is the The D.C.I. Tom Douglas series which are all amazing.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC

3.5 stars rounded up.
This is the third in the Stephanie King series.
Nancy has been left her aunt Helen's cottage in Cornwall. She can't understand why as they hadn't spoken for many years.
Fifteen years ago, Nancy's sister Lola disappeared. Nancy had to look after their mother for two years until she died. Nancy thinks this is why Lola ran away.
Nancy frustrated me at times. Why wouldn't she let Stephanie help her? She put herself in danger.
I did guess quite early on what had happened to Lola, so no surprise there.
I liked the twist at the end, but the lead up to the conclusion felt a little far-fetched for me. It was like it was all rushed to tie up all the connections.
I'm a big fan of Rachel's books and I look forward to the next one.
Thanks to Rachel, Netgalley, and Headline/Wildfire for the ARC in return for an honest review.

Nancy’s younger sister Lola disappeared without trace eleven years ago from her aunts seaside home.
Now Nancy has inherited this house and has moved there because she is determined to find out what happened to her sister all those years ago.
A slow moving story with with multiple timelines and some twists.

When Nancy is left her aunts cottage by the sea in her will it brings back some bad memories of the last time she was there after the death of her mother. The cottage which should be a place of love and peace only holds bad memories for her as this is the place where her sister went missing many years ago. When a discovery leads her to question the facts around her sisters disappearance she can’t help feeling someone is watching her and as she tries to find out the truth and answers may put her into more danger than she could ever expect. This book kept me up all night reading it and should not be missed. Loved it!

Nancy Holland's life has not been an easy one so far. She lost her mother when she was 19, after functioning as her mother's sole caregiver for nearly 2 years. In order to do so, she lost out on years education as well as the fun and freedom she should have been enjoying at that age.

Meanwhile, a distance sprang up between Nancy, and her father and younger sister, neither of whom did their fair share with respect to looking after Nancy's mother. Nor did things improve between them, when the trio went on holiday to Nancy's aunt's cottage in Cornwall, with the aim of taking a break to recover from her mother's death.

On the contrary, Nancy's younger sister - 15 year old Lola - began acting out and, after an argument with Nancy, ran away the following day. What haunts Nancy is the knowledge that Lola had told her that there was something she wanted to discuss with her shortly before she disappeared.

Now, 11 years later, Nancy is back at the cottage in Cornwall, which she has inherited from her aunt. She still longs to know what has become of Lola. And thanks to an accidental discovery by two young boys, which leads the police into an investigation, she might just find out...

This story starts off slow, but Rachel Abbott is a skilled storyteller, and her character Sergeant Stephanie King does not disappoint. Overall, this is an engaging read, and a thriller that delivers its fair share of twists.

The third book in Rachel Abbott's DS Stephanie King series based down in South West UK. Steph investigates skeletal remains found in a hidden cave and an 11 year old case of a runaway. Are they linked?
Running alongside is Steph's relationship with Gus her ex boss which becomes infinitely more complicated in this book. A great read covering topics including people smuggling, incest and stem cell transplants to name just a few. With some cracking twists, "Don't Look Away" is a superb book I'm happy to recommend.

This was another great book by Rachel Abbot which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. A good police thriller based in Cornwall and with a missing girl from years ago at the heart of the investigation.

The start was a little slow but the description of the area and the writing were excellent and I was intrigued to discover at the end how the police solved all the mysteries.

I would highly recommend this book.

Awesome thriller.
Eleven years ago my sister Lola vanished from my aunt's cottage in Cornwall. Now I'm back, and I'm no closer to understanding why she ran away. What secrets was she keeping? Memories come to me in snippets, but something is still missing. Then a body is discovered in a cave below the cliffs. No one knows how long it's been there. Is it Lola? The next night I wake, knowing someone is there, standing by my bed. I can hear them breathing. What do they want? Am I getting too close to the truth? Did Lola ever leave?
It was a delightful read.
Thanks to NetGalley and Headlines for giving me an advance copy.

Another page turner from Rachel Abbott.
Nancy travels to Cornwall when her aunt leaves her a cottage. It has sad memories as it is the place her sister disappeared from 11 years earlier.
Nancy starts to learn more about what led to the disappearance.
A really enjoyable read.

3.5 rounded down
DS Stephanie King #3

Two boys on the clifftop, some tomfoolery and a rash decision that nearly ends in disaster, but which leads to a shocking discovery. D S. Stephanie King investigates. Meanwhile, Nancy makes her way to trip Trevyan in Cornwall to the cottage her great aunt Helen unexpectedly bequeaths her. It’s a sad return as 11 years ago her sister Lola vanishes. Will Nancy ever learn the truth about what happens to her younger sister?

First of all, it’s very slow to get going as we get a huge amount of Nancy’s backstory with too much unnecessary detail on family life before the fateful Cornish holiday. Thankfully it’s worth hanging in there as it does get better and parts of it are really good with Rachel Abbott’s style being very engaging. It’s a very character driven study via both Stephanie and Nancy, with the latters complex feelings and disconnect and suspicions coming across well. Stephanie is a very likeable central protagonist.

The middle part of the book is really good and I become fully invested in Nancy’s story. There are some chills, a deepening mystery and some twists and turns. What emerges is topical, but no huge surprise as it kind of had to be though the final twist is a really good one. The ending is a bit of a stretch but it is entertaining.

Overall, it’s a good read but would’ve been better if the early detail is reduced.

With thanks to Headline, Wildfire for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
