Great to see Max back again! I really liked this - it was lots of fun. Great adventure, picture book (although would work better as a hard copy than an ebook).
Monster Max is a great kids book. Max can turn himself into a monster just by burping, my kid thought this was a great ability (he's a boy so if course he did) As an ebook I felt this didn't work well with the picture of the book, it didn't take away from the story at all and we were still able to enjoy it.
This is my first foray into the Monster Max series and while this could be read as a stand-alone, I did feel as though there would be benefit to having read earlier books, as otherwise the opening chapters can feel a little confusing.
There is a host of adorable characters and plenty of humour throughout that would certainly appeal to the target audience. Max, although a monster, gets himself into all kinds of scrapes and children will find it amusing that he needs to burp to assume his monster form.
I loved Sirius and he is certainly depicted as a sweet character despite being a werewolf Cub! The description of the scene at the ghost train before the firework display was my favourite moment and I can easily see how this would appeal to young readers.
This book is perfectly pitched for emerging and independent readers between the ages of 6 and 9 and the short chapters make it ideal as an introduction to chapter stories. The illustrations add to the story’s and are fun and engaging.
With thanks to the author and Rachel at Random Resources for the opportunity to participate in the tour.
Monster Max is back and still trying to follow his motto of doing good despite being a monster, from time to time at least. No, not doing good from time to time, being a monster from time to time. That's right! If you've never met our friend Max before (you're sorely missing out!), you don't know that he can change between a boy and a big orange-ish furry monster on a whim! He made a promise long ago (okay, two stories ago) to not abuse his strength/powers, and he's kept to it, but sometimes he's not given much of a choice.
You see, the great fanged one back in Krit will stop at nothing to get Max and his mom back to their nearby, but secretly cloaked old home. Let's just say he has one big power trip, and considers it the duty of those he rules to follow his every order. His latest scheme could've landed this duo in serious hot water, but thanks to kindness shown on Max's part, the honesty of a new little fur friend, a tech savvy bestie, and a feisty little cat, things might just turn out better than you think! 😉 I loved Max interacting with Sirius. It showed his kind heart under that big furry body, even if he was going against his parents orders to lend that helping hand. It turned out all right in the end despite the lies told and decisions made without thought to consequence, but it also served as a reminder that sometimes to do the right thing, you have to step away from what you know.
A great addition to the series, and a fun reading treat for fans of Middle Grade Fiction from the small to the tall!
This was a really fun and adventurous book for children. I could tell by reading that this was a part of a series of books, I haven't read any of the others in the series but this didn't detract from my enjoyment at all. I think these are the kind of books that children could dip into and read some or all of.
The story follows Max who can turn himself into a monster when he burps which will appeal to many children!! He is a funny character who cleverly gets himself out of scrapes and I imagine would successfully be able to deal with any adventure that was thrown at him! His friend Peregrine is an unlikely hero but the friendship works. I enjoyed the tension provided by the wolfpack hunting the family and the excitement as the adventure hit its peak. I think this is a great set of books for those children who are just starting to read chapter books themselves. 6 and up would enjoy reading them and I know they will be right up my sons street. I am off to hunt for some more books for him to read....
Max and Peregrine are back, and though this is book three you do not have to have read the previous books as this is very much a stand alone story. After fleeing from the fair off Krig Max’s mum is now being hunted by Fanghorn in this story and when he send the Varkas pack to capture to her and Max to bring them back, things don't quite go as planned. Featuring yet more adventures for them Max and Peregrine we are treated to werewolves and even an appearance from Frankenstein, I loved this tale. This is a very appealing story to kids who will find the toilet humour hilarious.
** I read this in ebook format from Netgallery and for the first time ever found the formatting to be abysmal and I actually really struggled to read the book, there was text missing and large black thick lines throughout the page that almost made it impossible to read. The illustrations which was a great addition to the story was all broken and fractured that it was at times impossible to know what they were.** this does effect my over all review but it did play a big part in the enjoyment of reading this story.
A thrilling ride of a book, but for kids!
A middle-grade chapter book with big, bold, whimsical pictures and a story that starts out tame, but then turns into a breathtaking and thrilling ride (yet perfectly suitable for kids).
There is fun, there is friendship, there is a cat, there is a werewolf, there are adventures. And what could be more fun than a boy who turns into a big monster (when burps) and then turns back into a boy (when sneezes)?
My tween read it (and laughed out loud reading, and said it was fun, so – it’s not for little kids only!) and all she had to say was that I must find out if there is going to be a next book in series.
This was a fun story to read, I loved the way Max turns into a monster! The storyline starts off with an exciting discovery and the story continues to evolve in a thrilling way throughout.
I adored all the characters, especially cute Sirius and his persistent desire to stay with Max.
The ending was dramatic and had me sitting on the edge of my seat.
A fantastic romp that had me lost in the world of monsters and wolves 🐺
School just started in Germany and it´s about time to update my children books library for the coming long nights of autumn and winter. As here, in our home, we loved Monster Max and the Marmalade Ghost, a continuation of the series was approved unanimously.
The third book in the series, Monster Max: This Time It´s Sirius can be also read as a standalone book, but after getting to know Max it will be hard to resist the temptation to find out more about him. This time, the resident of Krit, that can easily turn into a monster by burping and sneezing, has some issues with a pack of wolves which seem to keep an eye on him and his family. But Max has more than one reason to be worried, as he secretely brought to his home a cute little wolf cub.
Appealing the young readers between 6 and 8 years old, the book is written in a language that combines both historical mystery and modern references, which makes it easy to read and understand but also appealing to the everyday life and vocabulary of English-speaking children. The illustrations by Tom Tinn-Disbury add more humourous salt to the story, allowing the little reader to imagine the details of the story read.
All I need to know right now is if there is a continuation of the story, as we are already impatiently waiting for Monster Max next adventures.
Max has a special skill- he can turn himself into a monster just by burping. Where he comes from, this isn't unusual however he sometimes does this by mistake which can land him in hot water and adventures. When he and his best friend find a pack of wolves from Max’s home country are moving towards them, they want to keep them out. However Max has found an orphaned cub that he wants to keep.
I would recommend a hard copy as the version I received of this was in e-format and unfortunately not the easiest to read as the pictures were segregated- however-looking at what the others in the series are like and from images- this looks like a colourful read with a good story which will stretch both the imaginations and the vocabulary of most 6-8 year olds. There are colourful illustrations which will help keep the flow and for younger ones what is happening in the plot. It’s an easy writing style, one to fire the curiosity of the reader, whether child or adult. An imaginative story well told which I feel children will find delightful.

A fun adventure for Max and Peregrine once more
As with Frankenstein the cat they explore.
Looking to complete missions whenever they can
Thwarting wrong doers is also their plan.
Fanghorn is after Max and his Mum,
Sending werewolves to get them to come
But "To Protect and Do Good Stuff"
When you've a cub to look after can be tough!
Get ready for danger, mischief and surprises, too,
As monsters battle and there's much to do.
With illustrations to show what's happening, too,
A great read for youngsters - and their carers, too!
A great book for children to read with you
I throughly enjoyed reading it and hope your children will, too.
For my complementary copy of this book, I say thank you,
As I share with you my honest review.
We love Monster Max! The whole family – me and Mr Shine, Minishine (10) and Babybows (7) – gets excited when a new Monster Max book comes out and so we were really looking forward to this third book in the series.
And it did not disappoint!
You don’t need to read the first two books to enjoy this one, but honestly you’d be mad not to read them all… they’re so good! Max and Peregrine get up to various well-meaning, but often disastrous, shenanigans and get through them via amusing bodily functions (Max) and scientifically invented gadgets (Peregrine). It’s like James Bond but with no soppy romance and more toilet humour.
Here’s what my two monsters had to say about it:
Babybows: It’s amazing! I like Sirius and also the book is really good. I like the funny bits like the butt fireworks! [sniggers]
Minishine: Max has to keep a lot secret from his parents and his best friend – I would find that really stressful. But it is funny too. Sirius is my new favourite character – he’s so cute and fluffy!
Babybows: Sirius is my favourite too. And Peregrine is. And Max. And Frankenstein. All of them, really! This is the best Monster Max book yet! Ten out of ten!
Minishine: You should really just tell everyone to read all of these books because they will definitely like them and then they will think you… and us… are really clever and good at picking good books. Just say: Read it!
This is a great chapter book for independent readers and equally good for family bedtime reading and we highly recommend the whole series and this latest book in it. We’re all waiting impatiently now to find out what Fanghorn, and Max (and Peregrine, and Frankenstein…), will get up to next!
“Read it!”
This is recommended for ages 7-9 years old (or middle grade) and it is a perfect recommendation. The book is a beginning chapter book with a few illustrations to add to the story. The characters conversations and certain situations are very funny! This story also has a lesson about being honest and I like that the author included a small lesson. I’ve read other Monster Max stories but you don’t have to have read the other books to enjoy this one. I think this is a great series for young readers to get them interested in reading chapter books with great characters and storylines.
As always Max and Peregrine find themselves on an adventure they hadn’t planned. Max and his family are no ordinary people - his mum is a wolf and he turns in to a monster when he burps. This can be helpful but somewhat chaotic. Always thought fun in the end! Having fled the fair off Krig Max’s mum is being hunted by Fanghorn. In this latest adventure he sends the Varkas pack to capture them. Things don’t turn out quite as planned for Fanghorn. Will there be a next adventure for Max and Peregrine? I hope so!
Max is a boy - but a strange boy. When he burps, he turns into a 7 foot tall, furry, orange monster. Which can be sort of shocking if you are one of those unfortunate people who is in the wrong place at the right time to witness this transformation! On the plus side, he can also change right back into a normal human boy, simply by sneezing.
Max spends a lot of his time hanging out with his genius inventor friend Peregrine, as well as at home in Oxford with his grouchy cat, Frankenstein. Though, as we find out in this adventure, Frankenstein does have hidden depths.
Although they live in England, Max's mother is from the tiny country of Krit, ruled by an evil lupine creature named Fangenhorn. Unfortunately, he hates both Max and his mother, and sends an elite pack of werewolves (think SWAT team) to capture them and bring them back to Krit. But things don't go quite according to plan, partly because Max gets Sirius...
This is delightful story, funny and original, and the illustrations are very cute. Max is tremendously endearing - even (especially?) as a monster! Kids will love the adventures of Max and Peregrine, not to mention their redoubtable sidekick Frankenstein and newfound pal Sirius.
Unreadable in ebook format - text missing, large black thick lines.. can’t review as can’t read! NetGalley requires a star rating so I’m leaving 1 star but I honestly don’t know about the story
I thought that this book was excellent, it was a really fun read and very enjoyable!
The story was easy to read and follow and I loved the illustrations that were added in the book, they really helped bring the story to life.
The characters were a great mix and we loved Max. He tried his best all the time but he does get himself in to a few scrapes and a couple of pickles without trying. I loved the friendship and family theme in this book too.
It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended!
