A really great read. I liked both characters and the writer really grabbed their insecurities well. It’s a clever idea and you won’t be able to see what the issue is as both sisters love each other and annoy each other. It really builds from the start and will keep you gripped right to the brilliant end.
This book was a page turner, but I feel like I guessed a lot of what was going on. I prefer to be kept guessing, and the characters were not entirely likeable.
This was one of those books… The ones you can’t stop reading. Throughout the entire book I couldn’t help asking myself how much of it was true, could be true in the near future. What would I have done to ensure my sons happiness ? Would I wanna get my baby tested? I definitely will be recommending this book to family and friends and I’m sure there will be a lot of discussions.
After reading and loving After Dark by Jane Cowie, I was excited to read this one too, and I can't belive I left it festering for so long!
It starts with an article about a breakthrough in a piece of research, and a prologue where an unidentified woman is in prison. I loved the way chapter one takes us back 18 years ago to the birth of Simon and then alternates to present day from there, while we're slowly filled in about the events that have led up to now. As well as the dual timelines, there are alternating perspectives to keep you absolutely gripped, with just enough information, before changing again. This added together made for a very addictive read. From the start I had my suspicions about what was going to unfold and I couldn't wait to see if I was right.
The pace did not let up with this one, and I stayed up past midnight as I just had to know. Yes I guessed all of the twists but one, but its not predictable at all, I just think Ive read so many thrillers - this didnt hinder my enjoyment at all though. Its a brilliantly written book, amd definitely makes you think, especially as the Mum of a boy myself.
I did it for you
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
To start off with, I didn’t have much hope and it took me a while to get to page 60.
However, the book soon picked up and I became invested! I did guess a few of the twists, but I think the way that it unraveled was really good.
I think the plot fit together really well and I enjoyed all the subplots and flashbacks combining.
I liked the authors writing style and will definitely read more of her work.
Interesting storyline and one with huge potential however it lay a little flat for me. I did enjoy the different POVS from the characters however it didn’t grip me as much as I’d hoped. Nonetheless I still read it in a day and was a unique plot with strong characters.
I started reading this book and found it interesting and well written. Unfortunately due to lots going on in life I did not get to finish it. Review based on how far I got
Wow! What an absorbing read from the first chapter. The storyline was very thought-provoking and so gripping from start to finish. I was reading into the small hours as I could not put it down. I will certainly be looking for more titles from this author
I really enjoyed this book. It flowed well and with no unnecessary flowery descriptions and I did like this author's style of writing. It was a very interesting , thought provoking storyline about a world where boys can be tested for the M gene which can predict future violent behaviour and how two sisters decided what to do with their sons. A little bit chilling and could it happen in the future? Good twists at the end. I loved it.
This was so cleverly written, I had no idea that the twists were going to come towards the end, and then they just kept coming!
I enjoyed reading from the multiple POVs and time frames, from the boys being born up until they were 18 (now). Although the novels focus is on the M+ and M- gene in boys, it is also about so much more: their upbringing, their entitlement, but more importantly, their parenting!
It's definitely one to keep you thinking and keeps you on the edge of your seat, so you can't help but want to read more. It's one novel that I'll be recommending to everyone!
4.5 stars
This chilling dystopian had me swiping pages so fast; I needed to know what happened! While I did figure out the twist, it didn't take away from the story. The idea of being able to test for a violent gene is especially terrifying.
Such an interesting subject matter. I really enjoyed this book and found it quite chilling.
It’s very thought provoking and written very well. I really liked the characters and found the story very entertaining.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest, independent review.
I Did It For You is about two sisters, Antonia and Bea, both proud mothers of boys. Antonia has had her son tested for the “violent” M gene to ensure he does not possess it. However, Bea refuses to have her son tested as she believes a positive or negative test result should not determine his life.
Both women will go to great lengths to protect their sons, but one of them is hiding something…
This book is a great dystopian family drama! Although the plot may seem complex at first, it is a great concept and easy to follow. Some of the plot twists are predictable, but others are so shocking! I quickly became fully invested in the story and found it hard to put the book down.
Both women are flawed and can be very frustrating - I found myself loving to hate them!
I recommend reading this book, especially if you haven't read dystopian literature before but would like to give it a try.
Wow, this book is a blinder. Complex and twisty with unrelenting tension. So many strands of the story drop us hints that we puzzle together and whilst I had guessed at some of the twists, others I didn't see coming.
The story centres around a family and their two sons.
With the introduction of genetic testing for boys to identify the M gene, the ramifications of a positive test are life changing. Reflecting a world that really isn't so far from where we are, it was terrifying and fascinating in equal measure.
A really brilliantly written thriller!
I enjoyed this twisty book so cleverly written and it kept me enthralled all the way through. What a brilliant story. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this - will definitely be recommending and looking forward to the next one by this author!
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A dark, thought provoking, well-written thriller that will keep you intrigued right to the end. Recommended.
A really interesting dilemma - if you could test your child for a violence gene would you? Thought provoking and intense. Highly recommended
Sisters Bea and Antonia both have sons of a similar age,but only one has been tested for the M gene.
A new way to check if your child has violent tendencies.
After eighteen years Bea still refuses to have her son Simon tested but with that decision everyone treats Simon as though he has been tested positive.
Whilst Antonia's son being negative for the gene has a better quality of life.
It's a mother's dilemma as to have your child tested, would you?
This novel is very thought provoking and deals with some sensitive issues.
First, I would like to thank the author, Jayne Cowie, for the great dedication. The author dedicated her latest book titled "I did it for you" to all mothers of boys. This has already given me a lot to think about. Things are going to happen here. I sense something bad.
I'm excited. The introduction and prologue made me feel a lot of emotions. This will be an interesting story. It's already keeping me in suspense, and this is just the beginning.
Would you test your sons for the M gene? What happens if such a test comes back positive? Will it ruin the boys' lives forever?
Having the M gene in boys means the worst. Such children will become criminals, murderers, aggressive people and psychopaths in the future. There is treatment that can help curb uncontrollable behaviour. But do they actually work?
I met two heroines who are sisters. One of them is Bea and the other is Antonia. They both have sons. One of them has been tested, the other is shirking this duty. Why doesn't one of the heroines want to examine her son? Why is he so afraid that his test will be positive?
What happens to the families of boys diagnosed with the M gene terrified me very much. I wonder what would happen if a similar story really happened.
A very interesting and suspenseful thriller. I had a great time with it.
I was shocked at how the author led her characters. I didn't expect this turn of events. There are some interesting and unexpected twists here.
When picking up the book "I did it for you", be careful who you trust.
An interesting reading book for autumn evenings.
I recommend.
