Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of this book. I really loved this book! The premise itself was intriguing and drew me to this one. The supernatural spin on this kidnapping/murder thriller was so well done. I couldn't put it down. Twists and turns and packs an emotional punch.
3.5🌟
Two years ago, Gales ten year old sister was kidnapped and murdered. DI Kieran Clarke has worked tirelessly on the case but has still not gotten anywhere with the investigation.
Then, one day, Layla tells Gale who killed her and begs him to help her get justice....but how will he do that when nobody will believe that her ghost is right here, with all of the answers?!
This is a clever premise for a story and has a fairly big twist!
It's quite an emotional read at times, especially the bond and emotions between the two siblings.
I did enjoy reading this, much more so when it got to part two as it seemed to pick up pace. I wouldn't say it blew me away, but it's definitely worth a read.
Oh my goodness! It was a little hard to get into but it really had the twists I was looking for. I absolutely loved it. Cried at the end. Definitely a 5 star read. So many twists from a quarter in all the way to the end. I don’t think I have any fingernails left.
Layla is murdered and they never caught her killer. Layla finds herself in limbo unable to move until her killer is found.
Layla is able to talk to her brother and together they work a way to make sure Layla killer is arrested and justice is served.
A sad but lovely read. I couldn't put it down and I really enjoyed it. Thank you.
I loved Little Ghosts. It was such an engaging read that I finished the book in two sittings.
Gale and Layla are brother and sister. Gale is the only person who can see and hear Layla's ghost since she was murdered. The grief the whole family is experiencing is tangible and heart wrenching. Little Ghosts is an interesting and taut thriller.
The child characters are particularly well-written and believable. They carry the story through from the sad beginning to the harrowing conclusion.
Greg Dunnett is a new author for me, but I will be sure to read more of his books in the future. Thank you NetGalley and Storm for the opportunity to read Little Ghosts.
Little Ghosts is an interesting police procedural, mystery/thriller. It has been two years since ten-year-old Layla was taken, raped, and murdered and the killer is still at large. This parents’ worst nightmare is keeping the family under a heavy blanket of grief. Layla has started communicating with Gale, her younger brother. Though he tries to convince his parents, they think this is all part of his imagination. Gale and Layla have decided to investigate the case themselves but when the murderer comes calling, the children are terrified. Gale may know who murdered his sister, but how does he go about proving it without putting himself in danger? A wonderful storyline with great characters. It did have a few obvious twists, and it was an entertaining read even if it was a tad obvious. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Read this is one sitting. Very good book and enjoyed it this suspenseful book and was quite emotional
A lovely gentle read where Gale is the only person who can see the ghost of his sister Layla. A clever idea fully explored with a plot line that leads the reader down several paths before reaching an admirable conclusion. Clever deception in the plot line is well explored and as with many books published recently the use of technology to deceive and locate is well used. Thanks for the opportunity to be an ARC.
A unique take on the usual murder mystery thriller. I loved the ghost spin and thought it was handled in a way that was almost realistic and worked really well with the storyline. This was beautiful written with the mix of heart breaking grief and thrilling mystery, I was completely hooked and had to know how it ended. Overall a really great read.
When Layla is kidnapped and murdered, DI Clarke takes on the case. Two years later, there is still no suspect. But Gale, Laylas younger brother has a secret; one that he hasn’t told anybody… yet. He can see Laylas ghost, and she’s told him who her killer is.
I fell in love with the characters in this book straight away, and found it a very compelling read. In a way, it is a simple story, with shocking twists as it progresses.
It’s an easy read and the type of book in which you pray for a happy ending. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading more from this author.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read this in return for an honest review.
Gale and Layla are brother and sister with a normal sibling relationship until events force them apart. Not an Andersen’s fairy tale, nor one by the Brothers Grimm but classically scary. The story pulls the reader up short several times with scenes that are hard to take but putting down this book is not an option.
This book wears many hats. Part ghost story. Part grief meditation, the effect on a family after the unimaginable loss of a child. And one whopper of a thriller! All the threads were beautifully done. And that twist..... I've never read this author before but I will definitely seek out more of his books. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for making this ARC available.
I have been an avid reader of Gregg Dunnett since he first self published ’….rockpools’ and have long been astonished that such an accomplished and imaginative writer has not become a household name. He always captures my heart and imagination from the first page and this new story does not disappoint. A supernatural thriller with a police officer, Ellen Cross, who I hope may feature in other books. Once started I could not put this down and continued reading into the evening…..Netflix at last discarded for the evening!
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC but mostly thank you Greg for being such a good writer.
The title and blurb for this book had me intrigued so I had to request to read it.
It’s different to my usual genre but I really enjoyed it. A supernatural book with a clever storyline and a thrilling twist.
It had me hooked from start to finish and I managed to finish it in one night!
Overall a good, different read.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this title!
I loved this. The premise is familiar, like an old pair of very comfortable slippers but the execution (pun intended) is top notch and really enjoyable.
Someone, a child in this case, has been murdered and the ghost is desperate to communicate to get the killer caught. The fact that the ghost / victim is a little girl and the only person who can see or communicate with her makes it really poignant and a big tear jerker. The sibling bond and the determination of the little boy to avenge his sisters killer is really touching and well written. The twists and turns of the storyline and identity of the killer are cleverly written. The sense of drama, urgency and imminent danger are brilliantly portrayed. Overall a very good exciting read which was compelling and I was on the edge of my seat willing a good ending. Quite a few tears shed en route to the finish line, I’d definitely recommend this.
Layla is kidnapped, raped and murdered. Her family still grieves after two years, and the police still have no suspect.
DI Clarke advises them to put the case on Crimebusters after the case is shelved.
Young Gale, Layla's younger brother is grieving, and has not told anyone that he sees Layla's ghost, and talks to her.
She gives him valuable information, but how does he tell his parents where he got it?
I have to keep telling myself 'there are no such things as ghosts', but.......... I got a bit creeped out by this, imagine a 10 year old seeing his dead sibling and speaking to her? But did he?
Gripping novel, I could hardly put it down. And the twists. I felt so much empathy for this family, wanting justice, and wanting answers.
Very well written, pulled at the heartstrings, and felt so much rage at the perpetrator, such a cold and cruel predator!
I recommend for those that want a suspenseful book, with some emotional feels.
I would like to say that there are corrections to be made. There is a difference between the words "taught" and "taut". They sound the same, but have different meanings.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Gale's older sister, Layla, was murdered. He can see her ghost, and together they try to figure out her killer.
I usually don't read books that involve the deaths of children, but this one was so tactfully written. I didn't have a knot in my stomach like I usually do when reading similar plots. You find out who the killer is about halfway through the book, but that doesn't take away from the excitement of Gale and Layla trying to expose this person. I enjoyed this one!
This was my first read from this author and will not be my last. Excellent story with a sensitive subject which was handle well. It had me hooked from first page until the very last. What a ending was really not expecting that will definitely be recommending this book to anyone who loves a psychological thriller.
I've been a long-time reader of the author, and am thrilled about the release of his first "real" book (self-described). I enjoyed this tale, and while the "twist" wasn't too difficult to figure out, it still made for a good story. Perhaps it could have been wrapped up a little sooner, perhaps the kids were a little too well-spoken for children, perhaps the cops were a little too oblivious. Regardless, I enjoyed the ride and would recommend this and the author's other offerings.
I received a complimentary copy of the novel from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Jon and Rachel, along with their 10 year old son Gale, are still grieving over the murder of Layla, their daughter two years previously. Despite the tireless efforts of the police, no killer has been caught. When news comes through that the powers that be need to wind down the police investigation, the family, along with the DI in charge are having none of it. DI Clarke, in a last ditch attempt to get justice, persuades both the family and the tv show Crimebusters to make Layla’s case a prime slot on the program. But are the results what Clarke was expecting?
I have read several of Dunnett’s books and always enjoyed them. However, this one has definitely gone up a notch! Read in one day, I was captivated from the first few pages and it quickly became a ‘just one more chapter book’. Well written, likeable characters with an exciting plot, a very good read.
If I have one observation (NOT a criticism) then it’s that the ending was a little sentimental, but as the characters were young and emotional then I accept it probably needs to be.
A book I would definitely recommend.
Thank you NetGalley.
