REVIEW: Her
Her is a suspenseful psychological thriller. I don’t want to spoil anything because that’s a massive part of the story, so I will just share the jist of it.
Lucy is a recent widow after her husband’ somewhat suspicious death. It was declared an accident, but the police are not ready to let go of the case yet. Lucy moves to a house connected to a shop to start a mask-making business. She accepts a housemate, Elizabeth, to live with her even though she doesn’t know much about her. They get into a car accident, leaving Elizabeth badly hurt and Lucy in a coma. After this point, things begin to change.
I liked that you slowly unraveled the mysteries with the characters throughout the book. Many hints would sway you one way or another, only to have something else change your mind again. I also enjoyed that you aren’t sure who to trust throughout the story. I also thought the general premise of the book was unique and interesting.
Unfortunately, Her started very slowly, and getting hooked in was hard. Also, it was hard to follow the timeline because it would flash back to Lucy’s and Elizabeth’s memories, and it wasn’t always clear who it was. I think it would have been more successful with a dual point of view instead of just Lucy’s. Lastly, some elements are never really explained. Some readers might enjoy that, but it didn’t work for me in this case.
Honestly, overall, I don’t know what I think about Her. There were some thrilling moments, but also confusion and unexpected elements.
Thank you, Netgalley and Storm Publishing, for the free advanced copy for my honest review!
Lucy has recently lost her husband in suspicious circumstances and is trying to rebuild her life. In the process acquires a lodger, Elizabeth. They happened to be walking together and were involved in an accident. Around this point the book begins to morph into something unexpected but that wasn’t a problem for me. The story is pretty much a mixed bag with some parts more interesting than others but on the whole it seemed to be more dull than gripping especially at the beginning with the long descriptions of masks. I did like the idea very much and it was quite a different direction to most books and it was this that kept me reading on, albeit skimming some sections. A good read for anyone who fancies something which isn’t run of the mill!
This was the first book I have read by this author. I will be looking for more. This was a great book and so many twists I didn't see coming. I would definitely recommend this book..
Who is the elusive new lodger? This is one of the many questions in this gripping thriller.
From the first scenes, it takes you on an unexpected journey. The twists and turns come naturally in this novel. The supernatural element only makes it more thrilling and unexpected. You soon become woven in the lives of Elizabeth and Lucy.
I would highly recommend.
Her by Jane Jesmond was not for me, personally. I am still thankful that I got to read this! I won't count this author out and will probably still read something else from her!
Wtf did I just read?! Those twists! That ending!! This book was dark and the story was unexpected but it was done so brilliantly! I loved it.
This was one that I really liked the sound of and was looking forward to reading it.
I found it fell short for me, the premise of the book sounded really good and had potential but I found some elements a tad far fetched, but I did like the supernatural elements of it and the end did redeem it for me.
Thankyou to NetGalley, publisher and the author for an ARC.
I thought this book would be a thriller, but it turnout that the book was a paranormal thriller. It was definitely not my genre and I did not finish reading this book.
This was different from other books I have read this year. it was kind of slow to start, but picked up and had a twist I didn't see coming. It was dark and creepy and I loved this.
I was a little confused with this story to begin with. Then I got it! I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either!
This was really different and got me really intrigued and I had to keep going to see what was going to happen.
I do like this author and really recommend her books.
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
A unique thriller with a racing finish. This book starts strong but prepare for the twist - it changes pace so fast that it almost lost me, but something about it kept me reading and I'm SO glad I pushed through. I was so invested in the characters and couldn't wait to see how it ended. I literally couldn't put it down in the last few chapters!
Unfortunately, I ended up DNF'ing this book. I will try to pick it up again in the future to see if I can connect with the story but I just couldn't get into right now. The story was very slow paced and a bit weird at times - I usually like weird but this just didn't work for me.
I typically enjoy a fast paced, edge of your seat type thriller with shocking twists. I think that it's my personal preferences that kept me from enjoying this book, not the writing or story itself.
Interesting story. At times it felt like it was being dragged out. The main character is fleeing from her husband trying to start over but the cops won’t let her. They think she killed him. She gets into a car accident with her tenant and when she wakes up she’s in her body. How’s that possible?
An intriguing thriller with plenty of twists and turns that I thoroughly enjoyed! Will look for more from this author. 5 stars!
Thanks to #NetGalley and #StormPublishing I received a copy of Her by Jane Jesmond, in return for an honest review. #Her #NetGalley
This story focuses on two main characters, Lucy and Elizabeth. Lucy owns a mask shop, and Elizabeth is the lodger who lives upstairs. Their lives become entangled, and they have to help each other to survive the situation they have found themselves in.
This is a great thriller, full of suspense. I haven't read anything like this before, and was not expecting those twists. I honestly couldn't put it down.
What a powerful book! From the first page I was invested into the story and wanted to know more and more about it. Easy 5 stars. Would definitely recommend
A weird and creepy novel with a dreamlike atmosphere and a gripping plot. I don't want to talk about the plot and I think that anyone must read and judge because this is a very personal reading experience.
I liked it.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
What a gritty, unputdownable novel by Jane Jesmond.
2 women, 2 different lives but they become inextricably linked and neither one can do anything about it.
The blurb on the back is ambiguous for a reason, nothing should be given away because it's weird but in a really good way.
If you love psychological thrillers then pick up this book. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I had the biggest rant to my friends about this book because it sounded so promising and I was looking forward to it, but then went all wacky. I very nearly bailed on it, and I rarely bail on books. I’m glad I didn’t though. I wanted to see it through and it was sufficient to keep me intrigued. Rather fast paced in parts too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
