4.5 stars - I loved The Agathas so when I found out there was going to be a sequel, I was very excited. It definitely lived up to my expectations - I read the whole book over two days and the majority of it was in one sitting as I couldn't put it down!
I enjoyed the mystery and the fact that there were many different aspects from different time periods that all interconnected was very interesting. All of the clues and twists made me have to keep reading to find out what happened and, although I did work out who did it and why, I was still hooked as there was so much going on that I thought I might have missed something.
It was great to see Alice and Iris again. I enjoy getting both of their perspectives as they have such different backgrounds, so it's interesting to see how they approach situations. I do wish there was a bit more character development but I have faith that this will come in the next book.
Overall, this was a great YA mystery with lots of twists that kept me hooked throughout. I can't wait to read book 3!
I really enjoyed the first Agathas book, so I've been excited for the second, and I was thrilled to get my hands on an ARC copy. At the same time, I was a bit hesitant; I'm not a massive one for series, in part because I have a crap memory. If there are going to be tons of references to a book I read a while ago, chances are my attention has been lost. I'm pleased to say that this did in fact pass the Bex Test! There were some references, and I definitely think reading the first one is some good grounding for this one, but you don't have to remember every single detail.
I found the 'whodunnit' aspect of this book fairly obvious - but at the same time, I was constantly wondering whether I'd put the pieces together wrong, and that maybe I was completely off track. That it was a somewhat multi-layered mystery added to that, as there were always other parts to think about. I really liked the widening of the cast, and getting to know some different people (albeit not in an extensive way) was fun, plus built the repertoire of the skills. I also enjoyed some of the ways that class and differences in experience were explored, particularly regarding a certain cheque.
I think my main criticism is that I didn't come out of this feeling like I knew either Iris or Alice. Despite alternating between the two of their experiences, I couldn't get a handle on who they were as people. There was a moment when Alice mentioned that Iris had been out of character, and all I could think was... why?! Which, given that half of the book was meant to be Iris's experiences, was a bit of an odd thing to feel. Obviously I know she's still working through the trauma from her father, but I don't know, I just didn't really get what Alice was referring to! I also think the explanation of the crime was a bit... flat? And quite extreme as well!!
I'm really hoping that the next book will look more at the mystery of Raf's sister, and I will definitely be reading that when it comes out. So whilst this wasn't an all found top hitter, it was still a good read, and one that I would recommend. It feels like a tough world out there at the moment for YA mysteries, and Agathas really does hold it's own.
Thank you to NetGally and the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
Two mysteries, two different centuries and two persistent teenagers - the perfect second book in the Agatha’s series.
Alice and Iris return in another captivating mystery novel that Ms Christie would be proud of. Following on from the first book in the series we find the same set of characters, alongside some interesting new ones, trying to do what they do best - solve a mystery.
Plagued by past mistakes and acquisitions leading to the wrong person in trouble, the Agatha’s are determined to get it right this time - which means no stone (or hidden doorway) gets left behind.
From high-school drama to Hollywood, there’s plenty of twists to keep you gripped in this book. I’m already looking forward to the third!
Thank you NetGalley and Oneworld publications for the ARC.
The sequel to The Agathas! YES! Requested the second I saw this here, and I wasn't disappointed.
Iris and Alice find themselves in the midst of another crime involving their rich school friends, and soon realise that they have pulled a thread and unravelled a decades old bunch of secrets. Old Hollywood, family history, and friendship, as well as the familiar Agatha Christie all make this book incredibly enjoyable, I loved it. I hope there is another in this series soon. Brill!
