To be fair to the author this isn’t my usual genre to read - I love watching a good horror movies as much as the next guy but I’m not sure I can find the brain capacity to delve into this mindless killing spree night after night. Thank goodness it was a quick read.

Generally I found some scary scenes and the characters had some backbone unlike most side characters within the movie genres and I liked the “creatures” in the book as well as the folklore attached to them for backstory.

The real deciding factor for me for the drop from 4 star to 3 star was the needless killing of the dogs!! Kill off a Whitney side character and let the poor dogs get away. I’m a dog trainer by day and I couldn’t cope with this bit but that aside it was an overall good effort and kept me engaged as someone who usually struggles within this book genre.

Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book #netgalley #thedevilswoods #folkhorror

Folk horror is one of my favorites of the horror genre. I love reading about the story behind the legend. Reading about how long something has been part of an area fills me with dread. I am so anxious while reading but somehow I cannot stop myself. As I read this book, I felt the woods closing in around me. Just reading that Kyle and his family were unaware of what lurked in the woods was terrifying enough but to then read the description of what they were up against would for me, be the time to exit. The battle scenes were harrowing as i could feel the claws swipe by my head. I definitely would heed any warnings that i came across if it said “do not enter.”

This was a spooky, good read, but I felt like this story was left unfinished
I hope the author comes out with a sequel that makes the ending of this one make more sense!

I am always drawn to horror that takes place in the woods. The author did a great job of keeping the horror and suspense building and building until you start to feel your skin crawling and goosepimples rising. Would reccomend to anyone who enjoys a good book!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Another great horror novel by Brian Moreland.
Creepy and adventurous at the same time as they go on the hunt for their missing father and find more than they bargained for.
I’ve enjoyed other books by this author and this one was great as well.

3.5 out of 5 stars

Kyle and his siblings travel to an abandoned area on the Cree reservation to find clues behind their father's disappearance.  With warnings of "Do not go into the Woods," I mean, what could go wrong??  This story deftly combines mystery, horror, and Native American folklore.  I enjoyed the story (those woods were definitely creepy!!) but I had problems when it came to the pacing, especially in the first half.  One I would recommend for horror fans looking to add some sinister outdoor scenarios to their Halloween reading list.

Wow. First time reading Brian Moreland, and I really enjoyed this book. Grabbed me right from the first chapter. Really Developed characters, with a great story and pacing (couldn't put it down). Will definitely be reading more from Brian Moreland. #TheDevilsWoods #NetGalley

Brian Moreland pulls it off yet again. I have loved a lot of his work. This was a thrill ride and a half. Think scary creatures, fantastic realistic characters, tension, suspense and a fast paced plot. What more do you want right? The chill factor is there and plenty of unexpected turns to keep you on your toes. I love his dark mind and imagination. A writer who deserves a lot mite exposure and credit. His writing gets better and better. Highly recommended this, I could not put it down and check out his other books too. I’m a firm fan of this horror writer. Loved it!

I picked this book up on a whim because I saw the words 'canadian wilderness' and ''disappearance' in the same sentence.. and after having finished the book I have to say - what a good choice! I loved the Native American folk lore, the cultish religious stuff, the murdering, the spookiness, the wilderness. The characters were developed enough that I cared about them and their fate and the pacing was such that I never felt the need to put the book down during boring parts because there weren't any! And that final chapter.. ouuuu spooky. Definitely a must read author for me now.

What a spooky, frightening jaunt in the woods! This was a great book that will make you afraid to read it in the dark!

Full of a spooky unknown, mixing with folklore, this one had me shaking in my boots from start to finish. I highly suggest this one for anything in for a good horror/thriller. I also loved that this one was located in the backwoods of British Columbia.

This book was such a fun ride! I loved the Native American folklore and focus on family, plus give me a book set anywhere in Canada and as a Canadian I am overjoyed. The characters felt well fleshed out and there were even some twists I didn't exactly see coming. The action helped to keep good pacing throughout and then propelled forward enough to make me anxious in the last 80% of the book. I enjoyed the ending immensely and thought the story closed out well. I will definitely be reading more from this author.

I unfortunately DNF'd this book very early on. I thought the writing was extremely poor and was not engaged at all in the story. I do not wish to give a star rating as I got through so little of the book, but I can't submit without it.

Quite a nice read, I'd say. I am not sure, what I was expecting but Brian Moreland did not disappoint me really. I was engrossed in the story from the first words. His characters are real and well written. He did make me gasp a few times out of surprise. So yeah, it was a nice read!

I'll definitely recommend it !

Kyle Elkhart is a famous writer and although still suffering from the loss of his wife Stephanie when his brother Eric comes to tell him not only is their dad missing but that their cousin Ray has something to give them something that their dad should’ve given them a long time ago Kyle is hesitant but ultimately agrees his dad going missing is status quo for the family but when they arrive and learn not only is their dad missing but the crew he took into The Devils Woods has also gone missing. Kyle has a second sense and can see ghosts and he has been haunted by a ghost in his apartment and fears and may have followed him to their Canadian reservation his brother brings his one of many girlfriends Jess on the trip and it doesn’t help that although Kyle hasn’t been looking for Love since the death of his wife two years before he feels an instant attraction to her. His baby sister Sonny and her new boyfriend Zack also come along for the ride he is a drummer and her band and they’ve been together a month but Kyle doesn’t question that he loves his sister and couldn’t wait to see her. Before it’s over however it will be more than just his dad and his dad‘s assistant who they search for those who don’t believe in ghosts and demons will become believers it is all life and death and Kyle Will learn and uncover the secret those on his reservation has been keeping in the terror they have encouraged. This is such a good book and although it is a reralease lease it is still current the story flows and I thought it was a great horror story. It stayed interesting with no lol moments and if you love great horror then you’ll love “the devil‘s woods” by Brian Moreland it is straight up horror where at first you go what was that? All the way to what is that? The theater is heightened as the story goes along and I love when books do that and think the author did it perfectly. What a great book! I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

An excellent horror that made me think of Stephen Graham Jones and kept on the edge and reading.
Well plotted, dark, gripping.
Highly recommended.

TW: Gore, violence & sexual assault

Enjoyable, unique premise that I found quite riveting. Mixing archeology with underground caves, the Cree Nations lore and Scandinavian mythos.

“In the shapes of man’s sins, fear wears many skins.”

Another creature feature. It was a good read but nothing to get my heart racing. So disappointed.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.

Folk horror which combines Cree mythology and Dutch folklore. Three half-Cree siblings are called back to the deserted reservation their estranged father lives on. Their cousin and grandfather are worried as he has not been seen for six weeks.

This is a fun creature feature which pits demons against the Cree of the reserve. The group that sets off into the woods gets taken out one by one as do other minor players. The characters have depth and are more than stereotypical types except for the egotistic, macho, womanizer that I kept rooting for to be killed. I thought this was a lot of fun and read it in one day. Is it the best-written book? No, but it certainly entertains.
