Wow, I really loved this book. I haven’t read ‘Both of you’ previously so these characters were all new to me but I think the book worked well as a standalone novel. The plot was fast paced and had me hooked, I finished it in 2 days. I was literally on the edge of my seat for the last bit of the story. Amazing use of character development by using different narratives, I really cared about these characters and what happened to them. Five stars from me and I’m going to order ‘Both of you’ immediately!
I didn’t know this was a sequel until I got to the end, so it reads well as a standalone. I found it a little slow in places, but very well written. The tension really ramps up near the end when it gets very exciting. A solid thriller by a well respected author at the top of her game.
This is the first novel I’ve read by Adele Parks. I was intrigued by the author’s best seller reputation, the glowing pre-publication reviews, and the book’s promising premise.
The plot sounded interesting but it didn’t grip me all the way through. It seems implausible and unbelievable in places when you delve deeper for rationale.
The characters are largely unlikeable. They failed to spark much interest or sympathy. Although I did want to discover how Leigh’s bigamy and infidelity played out with regard to her stepsons.
The storyline’s twists and turns were all too easy to guess, given the numerous clues scattered throughout the text. I felt it was a rather obvious denouement, too.
Once I reached the end of the book, I discovered that ‘Just Between Us’ is a sequel to ‘Both Of You’, and was requested by Adele Parks’ eager fans.
Online reviews reveal that some purchasers of ‘Both Of You’ were left disappointed and dismayed by what they read. This hotly anticipated sequel might not change their minds.
Sadly, this was an unsatisfactory book for me. Based on this experience, I’m not keen to read other novels by Adele Parks. Thanks to HQ and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This one isn’t really for me. I read the first few chapters but couldn’t quite find myself that interested in the plot. I then discovered this is a follow up to another book that I haven’t read - but now can’t as I know how that one turns out. I’m sure plenty of readers will enjoy it but it’s not for me. Thank you for the opportunity to receive an early copy.
Love this author and her previous books! This was definitely a novel I couldn’t put down! Enjoyed every word! Look forward to her next one
I really enjoyed this book and its complex characters. At first I had no idea how one part related to the other but slowly the full picture emerged. What a picture it was! Seemingly quite far fetched but Adele Parks does an excellent job of making the unbelievable somehow believable. I wasn’t sure whether to be sympathetic or annoyed with the main character but eventually I warmed to her. It’s difficult to say too much without giving away spoilers but the story is a well conceived and complex plot, in part set during lockdown in 2020. How soon we forget the trials and tribulations of that year. Told from different perspectives it gradually unfolds into an extremely dramatic ending. My only complaint and I was actually gutted when, at the end, I found it was a sequel. This is perfect stand alone book and apart from the occasional question while reading the book I would never have realised there was a prequel. However I would recommend reading Both of You first and now I will go and do just that albeit in the wrong order!
Kylie Gillingham has disappeared and the story is all over the papers. She is a bigamist and both husbands are suspects. Her step sons can't believe she is dead.
Stacie Jones is living with her father following an illness and is gradually recovering her memory.
What is the link between them and what secrets will be revealed when their worlds collide?
DCI Clements is investigating the case of missing presumed dead bigamist Kylie Gillingham.
Both husbands are under suspicion.
Meanwhile in Dorset, Stacie is back at home, recovering from surgery and is being impacted by memory loss.
How are Stacie and Kylie linked?
Full of mystery and suspense with plenty of suspects to select.
Thanks @adeleparks @hqstories & @netgalley for the eARC
This is an intricate, woven thriller, the follow up to Both of You and is every bit as good. The characterisation is very good, the plotting is clever and the writing is excellent. I liked the twists and turns, the dual storylines and the complex characters as their secrets were revealed throughout. It certainly gripped me until the last page. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
You've got to hand it to Adele Parks - her plots may be melodramatic but she knows how to deliver a story! I can't say much about the plot of this one, as it will give way the plot of its prequel "The Two of Us" which I would definitely advise reading before you read this. Suffice to say DCI Clements is still pursuing unanswered questions about the disappearance of two men's wives from the previous book, and is taking an interest in them and their families in order to hunt down the truth.
But things are not all what they seem and people are not all what they say.
This was an exciting and fast-paced story with different threads coming together to a highly dramatic denouement. Just as in "The Two of Us" there are plenty twists and turns along the way, keeping the reader wholly involved with the plot and the characters.
As is usual with an Adele Parks' book, flawed, vulnerable female characters take centre stage. They may not be angels, but their strength and resilience make them endearing. My empathy for them over-rides any doubts I might have about how realistic the plot might be. Who cares anyway? It's fiction. It's great to read. It's all I want from a domestic thriller noir.
I hadn't realised that "Just Between Us" is really a sequel to "Both of You", so when I was reading the first part I thought that I had already read it and nearly gave up! Luckily I kept going and so discovered the truth of what happened to Kylie.
This is a cleverly wrought and complex thriller with wonderful characters though, frankly, some of the situations and coincidences seem rather far fetched - but then this is a novel, written for entertainment. Adele Parks is a master of this type of story, playing on emotions and examining how far they might influence peoples' behaviours, even when straying in to law-breaking. Full of suspense.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
A gripping story of deception and discovery. Kylie is missing, possibly murdered. She is also a bigamist Naturally, both her husbands are suspects. After all, to quote Parks "Love is just a shiver from hate". Then there's Kylie's friend, Stacie, recovering from a serious operation at her father's house in Cornwall. It is DC Clements' job to to find the answer to these puzzles. A difficult job, made harder in the time of Covid lockdown. A must-read for mystery and thriller fans.
Apologise, but, this really wasn't for me. I found it a difficult book to get through and the idea of different characters narrating different chapters is usually a good format, but, with this book I'm afraid I just got confused.
A woman disappears and the police discover she is a bigamist and suspect one of her husband's of killing her.
In separate strands there's Stacie, a woman recovering from a brain tumour, living with her father and struggling to remember anything before the cancer.
What follows is marketed as a thriller, but, it's more of a family drama. I have previously enjoyed this author's work but this one not for me.
I'm grateful to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to preview.
I’ve recently started reading books by Adele Parks and somehow must have missed the prequel to this book, “Both of You” This picks up the story of a woman who went missing in the previous novel, Leigh/Kylie and looks in to what has happened to her.
All credit to the author, it was so well written that I didn’t actually realise it was a sequel until I read the afterwords and this was mentioned.
It was a great read and divided its time between the investigation into Leigh’s disappearance and a character called Stacie who is recovering from a serious illness. Living alone in an isolated cottage with her elderly father she struggles to remember anything about her life before she became sick.
The atmosphere of the early days of the Covid pandemic also added to the feeling of unease and menace engendered by the novel.
There is a lot of time devoted to Leigh’s sons Oli and Seb and when they start to search for their mother the story gets really interesting.
I certainly don’t think it mattered that I hadn’t read the previous book as I had no preconceptions about any of the characters and took them all at face value in the same way as DC Clements. I didn’t know who the guilty party really was and this added an element of surprise to the denouement.
I don’t want to reveal too much about the plot but suffice it to say that this was an excellent psychological thriller
This is definitely recommended to both readers of the earlier prequel who want to know more and those like me who have come at it fresh! There is something in it for everybody.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my arc.
Lots of suspense and twists in this atmospheric novel- excellent as always from an Adele Parks novel. D. C. Clements has to investigate a probable murder without the presence of a body. A real page turner as not everything is as it seems!
Adele Parks MBE is such a prolific writer (publishing on average one new book per year) that it takes a very determined reader to keep up with each of her new releases, literary characters, and various plotlines. Conceived as a sequel to one of her previous novels entitled ‘Both of You’, this book could also be read as a stand-alone and showcases Parks’s storytelling at her best.
The Year is 2020 and during one of the Covid-19 lock-downs, convicted bigamist Kylie/Leigh Gillingham, who simultaneously led parallel lives with two different husbands and different teenage sons in separate locations, has disappeared, with the police focusing on one of her husbands as a likely suspect. Elsewhere on the South Coast of England, another young woman, Stacie Jones, is getting used to living with her father once more whilst she recovers from cancer surgery. Unusual dreams and the revelation by a chance encounter that Stacie allegedly has another identity, make Stacie increasingly paranoid. In her fragile mental and physical condition, will she be able to peel back the lies and deceit to uncover the truth?
The novel is told from multiple perspectives: Stacie, Kylie/Leigh, her former husband, family friend Fiona and the investigating police officer. In the hands of any other writer, this would be a confusing and potentially annoying plot device, in Parks’s expert writerly hands, this concept works and drives the novel forward to a satisfying conclusion. I found some of the dialogue a little far-fetched but then again this is fiction, and breathtaking fiction at that! Thank you, NetGalley and publishers, for the digital ARC I was gifted that allowed me to read this novel and post this unbiased review.
Picking up where Both of You ended, bigamist Kylie is missing and all the evidence points to her being murdered by one of her husbands, Daan.
The investigation is ongoing set against the backdrop of the Covid pandemic and the multiple points of view follow Daan, other husband Mark, best friend Fiona (who has links to them all and has moved in with Mark during lockdown. Who has killed Kylie and who knows more than they are letting on… it’s a intriguing and gripping tale of messy relationships, lies and secrets…
Woven alongside this is the narrative of Stacie - 37 years old and living on the remote coastline with her father. Stacie is recovering from cancer treatment which has left her without memories. As small glimpses return, Stacie is eager to find out who she is.
Just Between Us delves into these characters’ emotions and motivations before finally revealing how they are linked.
Once again,, Adele Parks has produced an up-put-downable novel: the rapid pace, multidimensional characters and changing POV left me reading long into the night. Looking forward to the next offering already!
Just Between Us by Adele Parks
I give this book 4.25 stars
Lost. Missing. Murdered?
And both her husbands are suspects…
Kylie Gillingham’s disappearance has gripped the nation: the woman married to two men at the same time
DC Clements knows the dark side of human nature you can’t presume anything when it comes to crimes of the heart.
Stacie Jones is being nursed by her father as she recovers from illness. But their reclusive life is about to be shattered.
How are these families linked……..
Until I was a quarter of the way through I didn’t realise this was a sequel to Both Of You,while it can be read as a standalone l personally enjoyed it more knowing the full backstory.
Set during covid which adds an extra element to the plot and following on from the ambiguous ending in the first book this story is filled with realistic but flawed characters something the author excels in creating.Told from multiple perspectives as the secrets are revealed,so are the motivations. For me it personally tied up everything in a satisfying conclusion.
Overall an absorbing tale of deception & mystery which I thoroughly enjoyed.
With thanks to Netgalley,Adele Parks and HQ for my chance to read and review this book.
I didn't realise this was a sequel till the end of the book. I haven't read the first book but it did not spoil my enjoyment of the book.
A real rollercoaster of emotions as I read the book. I couldn't put it down. When you even feel as if you should dislike a character but can't find it in yourself.
All the characters are believable and rounded with good and bad characteristics.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Kylie Gillingham has disappeared she's persumed dead by the nation who are gripped by the story. But Kylie has a shocking secret she's married to two men, and they are both suspects.
D.C. Clements is in charge of the case, and she knows only to well what people can do to hurt each other badly.
Kylies sons won't believe she's dead, but when a body is found, it blows the case wide open.
Stacie Jones lives a quiet life with her father in a small village sheltered from any news from the outside world, but that is about to be shattered.
Just how are these families linked?
A slow starter for me which did pick up going forward.
Not my favourite book by the author but a good read overall.
Thanks to Netgalley and HQ for the ARC.
