This was enjoyable overall, but sadly not as good as Riley Sager's best works.
The premise was really great and, for the most part, I liked how the story played out, even if some parts were a little slow, and I didn't feel the need to constantly pick up the book as I did with other Sager's works.
I have mixed feelings about the ending. On one hand, I was definitely surprised and the solution wasn't easy to guess. However, there were too many shocking reveals happening. From a certain point onwards there were twists after twists, and it was a little too much.

This is my first ever read of a Riley Sager novel and after this, it definitely won’t be my last.

The atmosphere itself was chilling, it’s a fast paced reads with more twists and turns than a rollercoaster and I absolutely sped through it.

Kit has returned to work after being suspended for negligence over a patients death and has to take a caregiving job at the home of Leonora Hope, who is notorious for allegedly murdering her whole family years before. Having been acquitted, the patient is now an old lady, paralysed and helpless. Her previous nurse has disappeared and Kit is to fill the role and she soon realises that the previous nurse was encouraging her patient to use a typewriter to communicate for the first time. And when she sits her patient in front of it, she types “I want to tell you everything…”

I predicted some of the twists, but then others came as a complete surprise. There was not a single part of this book that was boring and I couldn’t put it down. Add it to your TBR pile now if you like horror and thrillers.

ARC REVIEW
Publication date:- 4th July 2023

Kit has returned back to work after being suspended. She has now been offered to be a 'caregiver' to Lenora Hope who allegedly unalived all her family in 1929 according to others. As Lenora was the only survivor.
In present time Lenora is confined to a wheelchair, paralysed and is unable to speak.
Kit starts to communicate with Lenora by using a typewriter.. what dark truths will Lenora reveal?..

This book kept me hooked the entire time, couldn't put it down..
Heart-race, fast pace read.
Jaw dropping twists!
Kept me guessing the entire time.
Definitely a 5 star from me!

None the less an interesting read from this author

We have here all the ingredients for a really great book: an old crumbling mansion where some rather strange people live, a young (but not too young) carer with a secret in her past who reluctantly takes the job of caring for the most notorious of the inhabitants of the mansion. The carers’ name is Kit (short for Kittredge – I will never understand this strange habit of people using family names for first names) and the notorious person is Lenora. Supposedly, Lenora killed her parents and her younger sister, way back in 1929. The story itself is set in the eighties though, in a time before fast computers and even faster smartphones.
Kit takes the job because it’s the only one she can get. She herself was accused of a wrongful death and later in the book we learn how this affected and still affects Kit. The other people who live or work in the mansion are the housekeeper, the cook, the gardener, the cleaner and someone who takes care of all other, mostly technical stuff, that has to be done in and around the house. So, we have 7 people in this story who are the main characters and then only a handful of others. Well, how many lies can seven people tell? How many secrets need to be unveiled between seven people? A lot!
Although I didn’t like any of the characters and the plot twists were sometimes a little too predictable, I enjoyed reading this story. The mansion itself is almost an extra person and plays also a not very nice role. What I missed was a more even pace, without almost all plot twists in the second half of the book, and some humour or a bit of friendliness between the characters.
Thanks to Netgalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this review copy.

Another amazing book by Riley Sager, at this point one of my favourite authors! I am always looking forward to his newest book and not one disappointed me! This is another great thriller, taking place in a Gothic mansion. The atmosphere is great, characters are captivating, I couldn't put it down! Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book early!

The only one left is a fast paced, gripping, fun, page turner.

The writing style and the scene building has you pulled in right from the very first page! The way Riley painted the house and was so descriptive has me wondering and living in the mansion right along with them.

We’ve got characters keeps a host of secrets, everyone had something to hide. But would they kill for it? Your left feeling unnerved and find them all very strange.

There was twists within twists, which is so immersive that you just can’t wait to find out what is what. Whilst, I did see one twist coming, the author certainly kept you guessing. Whilst Kit was playing detective I was right along side her😂.

⚠️The only reason it wasn’t quite 5 star is I wish the ending could have been a little less outlandish and Some parts were a little repetitive.

Otherwise I would recommend this book;
🔪 gothic thriller
🔪 isolated location
🔪 whodunit
🔪twisty

A spooky mansion frozen in time, perched on the rocky cliffs, and slowly crumbling towards the churning waters of the Atlantic below - this is Hope’s End, the home of elderly Lenora Hope, the only surviving member of her family. Her mother, father, and sister were murdered in a blood fest one night in 1929, with Lenora being the main suspect. However, she completely denied it and the evidence wasn’t enough to convict her, but the townspeople have always believed that she’s guilty, and her reputation is reduced to a schoolyard chant, much like the infamous Lizzie Borden -

At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope
Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life

It’s now 1983, and Kit McDeere arrives at Hope’s End as a caregiver to Lenora. It isn’t a job that she wants, but after one of her patients died in suspicious circumstances, well it’s a case of beggars can’t be choosers. To say she’s apprehensive is an understatement, Kit has grown up with the stories about Lenora and understandably, that makes her anxious. She’s even more anxious when she discovers that Lenora’s previous caregiver, Mary, left the house in the middle of the night and hasn’t been seen or heard of since!

The creaky old mansion is the perfect backdrop for this creepy story, and I hadn’t a clue what was really going on, who or what to believe, but of course that made it all the more interesting! With twist after twist towards the end, Sagar has created a story of mystery and suspense that ensures the pages keep on turning ever faster.

At seventeen, Lenora Hope ★★★★☆

Disgraced caregiver Kit McDeere is given a last chance with a difficult twist: her client is local legend Lenora Hope, who murdered her whole family as a teenager.

Fifty four years later, Lenora is a mute and paralysed old woman. Surely there is nothing left in crumbling Hope’s End which is a threat to Kit?

Yet the previous carer left in the middle of the night, taking nothing with her, and Kit is certain there are footsteps coming from Lenora’s room and things moving around.

Then Lenora types her first line on the typewriter: I want to tell you everything.

This is a compelling and creepy gothic novel where the mystery of the crimes of 1929 overlap into the real dangers of the present. The finale goes too far in terms of credulity but the initial twist packs a real punch.

Another gripping gothic page turner from Riley Sager to join my favourites Lock Every Door (2019) and Home Before Dark (2020).

I really enjoyed this book, not my favourite by this author but an enjoyable creepy read nonetheless. Twists and secrets galore x

The newest Riley Sager thriller is set in the 80s and revolves around Kit, a caregiver who has been tarnished after the death of a patient. After her suspension is up, she is given the offer to be caregiver for Lenora Hope, an alleged murderer of her family decades before. Kit knows if she doesn’t take this job, she’s fired, so, desperate, she agrees. There, she finds a crumbling mansion, a strict housekeeper, and a patient who loves to type her story despite not being able to speak.

This one was different than previous Sager books in that it felt more mystery than thriller. This didn’t bother me at all though (Final Girls is still my fave and that one has more mystery flavor in it). I’ve devoured all his books before and this was no different! I thought I had the twist nailed, but I was only half right. And then there were more! I just find his books so encompassing where I just want to find out what happens. I can see others not looking this one as much because it’s not as creepy or suspenseful. However, the great, captivating writing is there, and there are some surprising twists! I also loved the way it ended. Definitely pick up and read if you’re a Sager fan - or even if this is your first of his (but then go back and read Final Girls!).

I received my copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This might be my favourite novel from Riley Sager I've read so far! I loved the concept from the start, loved the old house with its weird inhabitants, the murder and all the rumours around it, plus Mrs Baker was giving off somer serious Mrs Danvers vibes!

The Only One Left is a great Gothic thriller with secrets and twists aplenty. Even though I might've seen some of them coming, Sager kept surprising me until the very end. Kit, our protagonist, was a very likeable character even though she had some secrets of her own. I very much enjoyed Kit referring to Cluedo at one point in the story, as this novel definitely reminded me of the game, which I love, though this was a bit darker and more sinister. Gripping, fast-paced, brilliantly written - The Only One Left was a great fun and I thoroughly enjoyed this reading experience.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Riley Sager is one of my 'go to' authors so was super excited to be able to read his latest.

The story follows Kit, who has just lost her mum in harrowing circumstances and she has been the subject of suspicion after her mum's death as she was her carer. Kit returns to her job as a professional carer after a suspension and is given a difficult case, looking after a paralysed, elderly murderer, accused of murdering her entire family decades before.

The book builds suspense with many twists and turns and Riley creates great characters in Kit and Lenora especially who you champion throughout. I also think the book shares subtly, a great message of not making assumptions about people, their histories or backgrounds. Great read.

Riley Sager is mostly a hit author for me personally, and I really enjoyed most of his previous work. Which is why I was really excited to read his take on a gothic-y thriller. And it turned out to be a really good one, though it's not my favourite Sager book.

It tells the eerie story of Kit, a young woman with her own troubles arriving at the aptly named old mansion Hope's End, which is not only at risk of literally falling down a cliff into the ocean at any time, but is also the home of Lenora Hope - the only survivor of a terrible murder that happened during her teenage years. Her whole family died that night, and Lenora is widely regarded as the one that did it though her guilt was never proven.
Now an old and bedridden woman, Lenora is in need of a new caretaker after her last one mysteriously disappeared in the middle of the night. And in comes our protagonist, Kit, who's apprehensive and understandably doesn't trust Lenora at first and more and more gets drawn into the mystery of Home's End.

The creepy old mansion is the perfect backdrop for this story, and I really enjoyed the mystery in itself. What really happened back then? Is Lenora really a murderer? And where is her former caretaker? All of the characters involved have something to hide, which turns this into an atmospheric pageturner that is a lot of fun to read. I did miss characters I could actively root for though, because honestly, neither of them were likeable or even all too intriguing. They're not memorable and I wasn't really invested in our protagonist's fate, but I was still excited to solve the mysteries.

Now, I personally was disappointed in some of the twists presented. Actually, I was actively hoping for one of the major two twists to NOT happen because it's just nonsensical, stupid, unbelievable to me - a pretty big thriller did exactly the same kind of twist just a few years ago and it ruined the book for me. I honestly hate it, and it feels like a tacked on shock moment that absolutely everyone will see coming. I did like the other big twist though, although it's not a new one and I've read it too often in other thrillers. So while the race up to the finish line was pretty great and exciting, the very ending was disappointing. Though this is, obviously, very subjective because these are just twists I personally really dislike.

Still, this is another quick and engaging thriller read by this author, and while it fumbled the ending, the journey was worth it. 3 stars.

Well, having just finished this book, I took a moment to sit back and take a deep breath before I could even formulate my thoughts.
I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't wait to read more to find out how this played out.
There is plenty of intrigue to have you guessing and playing detective in this twisty tale, and I admit some reveals came as a surprise to me.
I would have liked to feel the ending was just a smidge less outlandish, but overall this was a fab reading experience.
I would recommend this to fans of gothic, twisty, whodunit thrillers.
Big thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Read it if you like:
* Gothic, claustrophobic thrillers.
* Twisty reads.
* Books you cannot put down.

Review:
I have just finished The Last One Left and my head is spinning. This book is twistier than your favourite rollercoaster and just as inclined to leave you dizzy. Sure, at some points you may have to suspend belief. Sure, I did guess some of the many twists, but that is because I came up about a dozen theories, as I couldn’t stop thinking about the book when I put it down. It got hooked into the plot really quickly with the short snappy chapters and ambiguous characters. I was completely gripped and entertained from the first page to the last.

Would I recommend it? 100% yes!

After hearing about Riley Sager so often in interviews and the like, I knew I had to read something of his.

I am so glad that this was my first book I devoured. And I say devoured for a reason - I finished it in two days. Mind you, I work have a family and studying at the moment so finding time for it was tough, but my bedtime was moved a few hours later, as I could not put this down.

In a world were published authors are providing us with subpar work, Hodder and Stoughton are one of the few publishers that put out quality work over and over.

The book had me from the getgo. We are provided with a character who has faulted, a house that is not what it seems, multiple characters that get fleshed out on every page. Murder, intrigue and just down right atmospheric writing. You feel as if you are living amongst these people within the same house.

I thought I could see the "twists" coming, but Sagers ability to interlace red herrings within this story is phenomenal. Questions surround every single character, and one tries to pin them down, yet the manage to pull out from underneath you to start and entirely different arc in the narrative.

It's a phenomenal read, and I urge everyone to get it. It crosses boundaries, so there is no one set reader demographic that will benefit - everyone does.

I will certainly go out and pursue other work from Riley Sager. But again, the calibre of H&S is so above every other publisher. One day, when I am old, and write a novel - H&S will be the house I apply at.

Sager does it again! An amazing book start to finish full of jaw dropping, heart stopping moments. This book is a rollercoaster from the start. Amazing characters combined with a creepy old house with past stories of murder and mayhem make this one a hit. I could not put this down and read it in one sitting. If you like suspense and terror this one is for you. The perfect combination of spine chilling and breath taking!

Intense
Great premise
Twisty as heck
Classic sager writing keeps me hooked
Unreliable characters - makes a gripping read
Loved the ending
I got emotional in parts
Although it took me a few days because it was a decently chunky read (400 pages), I didn’t ever want to put it down and enjoyed every minute
