Pericles loves Athens and is its leader, so when Sparta suffers a huge earthquake he believes now to build walls around Athens to protect them from future wars. Seemed a good idea until the Spartans arrive and lay siege to Athens and a plague runs through the people.
Beautifully written novel based on Greek history. Brings these great characters to life and gives an insight into the fears and suffering caused by wars and greed.
Excellent book, enjoy.
Until I read Iggulden, I would never have believed I would enjoy books about Athenian wars with Sparta and Persia. Although not quite as good as Lion, Empire really gives a sense of what it must have been like in Athens. A fascinating read.
Within pages , I was back with these familiar characters in ancient Athens. This author is a master of creating characters that allows the reader to feel part of the family. Eagerly awaiting the next exciting journey with my ‘friends.’ Con Igullden is fast becoming one of my favourite authors.
Following on from the high acclaimed "Lion" Cimon is on trial for his life or exile following his decision to set the King of Macedon free.
Pericles must make his way in Athens politics with or without his old friend
Sparta is laid low by a terrible earthquake and revolt amongst their helots. Athens must take the opportunity to strengthen its defences whilst their old enemy is weak.
A ruthless boy emerges on Sparta as battle king and leads his forces to lay siege to the walls of Athens.
Excellent as always from Conn Iggulden!
I would like to thank Netgalley and Michael Joseph Publishing for the chance to read and review this book
