Thank you Net Galley for providing me with a copy of Coven by Taous Merakchi & Da Coffee Time.
This is a witchy graphic novel with a spooky setting/"vibe". In this graphic novel, we start with four teens that dabble in witchcraft to save a tree in their city park. At first, everything is going according to the plan to save this tree. However, that quickly changes and everything starts going wrong.
Coven was an enjoyable quick read. Each character had their own story and background. We also see different communities represented in this graphic novel. I do wish it was longer so I could get to know the characters more. The illustrations were adorable but also showed the reader the personality that each character has.
Thank you Net Galley for giving me this arc for my honest review!
Four teens dabble in witch craft to do some good, but it turns awry quick as they start seeing things and everything starts going very wrong. I love witchy/spooky comics/manga and I really enjoyed this one! I think it might be one of my favorites this year! I'll definitely be rereading and buying a copy for Halloween TBR. It was a really fun, quick read. The characters were so cool and I loved each of them with their own unique depths and personalities. I loved the lgbtq+ representation in this book as well as the diversity, we don't get a lot of this in books and it was really refreshing. The art was so cool and I enjoyed every page of it, again, one of my favorites. I would absolutely love more of these characters from this author!
Rating: 4/5 stars!
First, I'd like to say thank you to NetGalley and Europe Comics for giving me this free E-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
My Rating: 3.5 ☆
In this graphic novel, we are following four teenage girls that decide to use witchcraft in order to save the big elm tree in their city park. Everything goes according to plan, until they start seeing strange visions of bad things happening, and they realize that something went wrong.
I enjoyed my time reading this! It was a quick and easy read. The characters were well-developed and stood out in their own unique way. I loved the lgbtq+ representation in this book as well as the diversity. Also, I really liked the art style and how we could see the characters personalities through their style. Overall, I liked the story and how it showed the power and importance of friendship.
I have 2 negatives to say about this book. First, I would've liked to spend more time with each individual character. We never spent much time with just one character, and I would've loved to get to know them more as individuals than in their friend group. Lastly, I would've liked to know more about how they got into witchcraft.
All that being said, if this story turns into a series, I'd love to pick up the next one!
The art style is a bit odd but at the story is pretty cool. Its short and fast paced. Very enjoyable.
Thank you Netgalley and the Publisher for granting me a free E-ARC of this graphic novel in an exchange for an honest review.
Coven by Taous Merakchi and Da Coffee Time revolves around four teenagers, who try to find their way through secret relationships, teenage stuff and of course an evil demon. Just a normal life for a witchy teenager, right?
This masterpiece was a delight to read. I absolutely enjoyed this in every single detail you can think about it. The art style was right up my alley. The story hooked me right from the start and I could't (and didn't want to) put it down for a second until I finished.
The characters were loveable and I could connect with them so easily. Next to the main story the graphic novel offered here and there some insight in their lives to establish an even better connection between the reader and the characters.
Overall, this graphic novel promised me a witchy adventure and it delivered even more than that. If this story becomes a series eventually I will read them all.
In Coven by Taous Merakchi and Da Coffee Time we follow four friends, Eve, Diane, Lily, and Morgane, as they fight to save a beloved oak tree from being cut down in the city park. When they decide to cast a spell in order to protect it, and find out that it works, they start noticing strange things happening to them. When they realize they have actually summoned a Demon of Chaos when they performed the spell, they quickly try to set things right before someone gets hurt.
This was a fun read! I loved how different the friends were but they each brought something special to the friendship in their own way. The plot of the story was great and kept me engaged as they tried to figure out how to save the tree and then get rid of the demon. I also loved the LGBTQIA+ representation and how accepting and supportive they were of each other in this aspect and also in their beliefs. None of them shied away when one of them took out a spell book and said let’s save the tree by using witchcraft. I wasn’t expecting the ending but after it happened it all makes sense! I hope there is more to this story and it becomes a series because I would definitely read it! Thank you NetGalley and Europe Comics for gifting me with an arc!

I wasn’t really sure what to expect going into this, but I really enjoyed it. The artwork was fantastic, I love how different each girl is, and how they each bring some thing to the table. I enjoyed the creepy/horror aspects too but I wouldn’t say it was a horror novel by any means.
I’m very excited to see where this story goes.
In a last ditch effort to save the big elm tree in their local park from destruction, four witchy friends gather together to perform a spell. A spell that goes oh so right, yet horribly wrong. Eve, Lily, Morgane, and Diane manage to save their favorite tree, but release the Demon of Chaos in the process. Now the demon is causing havoc in their daily lives and is trying to put cracks in their relationships. The girls must figure out how to battle the demon, undo the spell, and return things to normal before the demon ruins their lives instead.
A fantastic spin on the movie “The Craft”! The four friends are all so different and diverse. They come from different backgrounds, different family structures, and have different interests, but they all complement each other perfectly. One’s strengths balanced the others’ weaknesses helping them meld and merge into the perfect coven. Each girl had her own distinct voice and personality and her own chance to shine. The action was fast and kept the plot moving forward at a great pace. Coven was spooky, funny, and romantic all at the same time. Something for everyone! The drawings and colors were fantastic. They definitely set the mood and tone of the story. Loved the ending and am hoping for a continuation to this graphic novel.
I really like the art style of this book and I thought that the storyline was really good. I had a good arc. The friendship between the main characters was the front aspect that I love the most about this. I apologise for my late review, but things have been crazy lately, but I did actually really like all the characters they were diverse. They had their own family life. they have their own relationships and problems, which kind of fleshed out the characters a lot more. I also really liked how it can show some changes can implement a friendship group, but as long as the group is willing to work towards still being friends, it is capable. I love the character arcs and I also just like the style general of this art on this manga, but unfortunately I think there was some parts were described as soon as describe what was going on. I just felt like it was pulling you out the scene, which is why I’m giving us a four star star instead of a five
I absolutely love graphic novels, and Coven is no exception. I appreciate that the story focuses on high schoolers who are on a mission to save a tree because I think it's important to show young people that they should take an active, invested stance in our world. (I do dislike that the summary calls them rebels, as I think we should stop labeling people who are LGBTQ and people who are opinionated as being rebellious or out of the norm.)
I really love how colors are used in the novel to show that each character is a part of the world. Sometimes stories that revolve around witches use darker colors and imagery to set the characters apart from the "normal" people. It gives the graphic novel a Sabrina the Teenage Witch sort of feel. The characters are not malicious, and they can't be confused for anything other than distinctly good. Until things happen, and the situation starts to devolve. I like that there is a stark contrast in colors between when the MCs are together and safe and when something spooky happens.
Overall, I think the story was really sweet and definitely worth the read. If you liked Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker you will definitely enjoy Coven as well!
I want to thank Netgalley for allowing me to read this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review. #EuropeComics #NetGalley
First of all, I loved the art style of this, it was so cool. Second of all, I also really liked the story. I liked the little twist and turns and I especially enjoyed the ending which I don’t want to spoil for anyone who hasn‘t read this yet! My favourite character was Eve. I also really loved how seamlessly queer rep was woven into this story, be it with the choice of music or the sapphic moms. Overall it was a great read and I cannot wait to recommend this graphic novel!
A big thank you also to netgalley for letting me read this <3
The story was interesting to read I loved everything about this book starting from the drawing style and finishing with the plot and the friendship and everything else. Thanks to the publisher, author and Netgalley for letting me read this!
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina meets Totally Spies in this graphic novel that follows four friends as they dabble in a little witchery that goes awry.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! Everything from the art to the story to the characters sucked me in. My favorite element was definitely the friendship between the four girls at the center of this story; it was really fun to see the realistic highs and lows of their relationships with each other—from getting on each other’s nerves, to making up and banding together to support one another. I also loved that they were unapologetically a group of teen girls. The scene where Eve asked them all to come over to get ready together before a party because she didn’t know what to wear was super cute.
My only complaint is that the plot twist at the end was predictable. There were ways that the authors could have hidden the ball a bit better earlier on so it would’ve been more of a surprise. Limiting interactions with Colette could have accomplished this. If we had just seen her for a bit at the beginning, she would’ve slipped right under the radar.
All in all, I had fun with this one and was excited to see that they left an opening for more volumes in this series. I will definitely be picking up any sequels in the future!
Overall Rating: 4 stars!
A big thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Europe Comics, for providing me with an advanced copy of this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review!
I had mixed feelings about this one. I enjoyed the humour and the relationships between the friends, but I found the story a bit confusing and really wasn't satisfied with the ending. The art style was interesting, and appropriately dramatic.
I sincerely enjoyed this quirky, witchy graphic novel! The story takes place in our own world where four girls decide that, in order to save an old, precious tree in the community park, they will use witchcraft to derail the decision makers. Of course, their little encantation does not really work out as it was supposed to, and they will have to deal with the consequences.
It is not a world-changing, mindboggling story at all. The story is fun, the characters are quirky and likable, and aside from the witchy parts, we get to see their friendships and dynamics pretty well. It dragged around the middle for me just a little bit, and I could have taken a little more tension, but otherwise, it was very fun. I would highly recommend this.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange of an honest review!
Coven by Tacous Merakchi is a graphic novel that follows the story of four young rebels on a mission to save a beloved elm tree in their local park. Fueled by their concern and a desire to make a difference, Eve, Diane, Lily, and Morgane decide to use witchcraft to try and save the tree. However, their ritual unleashes a Demon of Chaos that is determined to destroy them.
One of the strengths of Coven lies in its diverse group of friends who come together with a common goal. While the concept of friends delving into the occult has become popular in recent years, the story manages to hold its own and keeps the reader engaged. The illustrations in the graphic novel are truly remarkable and perfectly capture the vibe and atmosphere of the story, adding to the overall reading experience.
However, there are a few areas where Coven falls short. Firstly, the choice to have the main characters in high school feels somewhat mismatched. Given the complexity of the story and the challenges they face, it would have been more fitting for them to be portrayed as college students. Additionally, some of the characterizations veer into stereotypes at times, which can detract from the overall impact of the narrative. The pacing of the plot is generally well-done, but the explanations provided at the end of the story feel somewhat abrupt and could have been more detailed.
In conclusion, Coven is an enjoyable and easy-to-read graphic novel that combines elements of friendship, witchcraft, and the supernatural. The diverse cast of characters and the stunning illustrations make for an engaging experience. However, the story does not fully break new ground and occasionally relies on stereotypes. Fans of Lumberjanes and Buffy the Vampire Slayer will likely find this graphic novel appealing.
4.1 rounded down to 4/5
Firstly, thank you to Netgalley.
.
I love witches and magic, so when I got a chance to review this, I was pretty thrilled.
.
I really liked the storyline and the use of colour. I was also a big fan of the individual character designs. I would be interested in continuing this series to discover more about this group and where their magical journey will take them.
.
The only negative I have about this graphic novel is that we do not get an introduction to each of our main characters, even now I am not sure which name goes to which character, we also do not know how they got into the craft.
Welcome Back!
It’s been a busy week full of reading! (I am still kind of hoping I can make my Goodreads goal, but if I do not it’s okay, it’s more of a personal challenge for myself). The other day, I went ahead and picked up a witchy graphic novel E-ARC. (Thank you so much to the publisher for the E-ARC in exchange for my honest opinions). I have been having some fall vibes (I know we are just starting summer but fall is calling me)! So this graphic novel was perfect for that mood.
SPOILERS AHEAD
Four girls who all go to the same school and are kind of friends decide they are going to protect the town’s massive elm tree. There is a group wanting to get rid of the tree and no one else in town seems as passionate about the tree as the girls do. So they decide to take, what some might call, extreme measures. They decide to do a magical ritual. They are not sure it worked until later when the tree is safe but magic comes at a cost and the girls have no idea what they might have unleashed.
I had a fun time with this story, towards the end it seemed like this might be a series eventually, but I am unsure if this is happening (if it does become a series I would definitely give volume two a try). I really loved the art style of this graphic novel. Each of our main characters were unique and all had their own strengths. This graphic novel came out in January but I would definitely recommend giving it a try!
Goodreads Rating: 4 Stars
**Thank you so much to the publisher for the E-ARC in exchange for my honest opinions.
I loved the art style and colour palette !!! It was a very fun story and I loved the dynamic between the girls.
