I am very much on a thriller run at the moment so this book worked it's way to the top of my to read list. I had a good few hours worth of driving to do this weekend so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to lose myself in a good audiobook.
The concept of this story really interested me and I knew it would be something that I would enjoy. Lots of deceit, lots of secrets and double bluffing; brilliant. Although I really enjoyed Julia's story arc, I did wish that I felt more angst from her. She had some super difficult decisions to make and although I did feel her struggle, I wanted more from it.
The unravelling of the mystery was something I didn't see coming, however looking back, I really should have; the clues were all there for me. I think I just lost myself in the story a little and forgot to keep track of any of those threads. Which is a good thing! I suspected one of the "whos" but I had no idea it was going to be as far reaching as it was and I will admit that I was shocked.
This was a really great driving buddy in the form of a book. I personally feel like it would have been a touch more gritty and dark, but even without that, it was an entertaining thriller to keep me company.
Gillian McAllister rarely disappoints for me as an author and Just Another Missing Person was just as good.
DCI Julia Day is investigating missing person Olivia. But when she is threatened for a past family secret to set up an innocent man, she knows that line has been crossed. If she does what they say an innocent family is ruined but if she doesn’t her own family is ruined.
This book has lots of little twists and turns sitting the story along all the characters. It’s an easy read that will not stop you guessing until the very end page.
Found this a bit slow to get going and couldn’t quite connect with it at first. Overall a great read with great twists and turns but not the best from this author. Worth sticking with though.
Thank you Netgalley.
Thank you NetGalley for approving me to read this. A very good read that had me hooked, once started I couldn’t put it down. Highly recommend
Are you a Line of Duty fan? Then this one might be for you. Just Another Missing Person follows the story of DCI Julia Day who is given the case of a missing person - 22 year old Olivia who has disappeared in a dead end alley.
This is my first read from this author although I also have another - Wrong Place Wrong Time - on my TBR. It took me maybe a few chapters to get into the writing but once I was there I was hooked and read this in two sittings. Although the focus is on Julia and Olivia there are two other characters who narrate part of the story as it intertwines with Julia as she conducts the search for Olivia. Julia faces quite a few challenges throughout and I could never tell quite who was responsible for what. I remember there was one reveal that I was really quite shocked at!
I can absolutely imagine this in an ITV adaption with Suranne Jones playing the lead. Can we have that please?!
I was excited to dive into Just Another Missing Person, especially after loving Wrong Place Wrong Time. Gillian McAllister has a knack for creating intriguing premises with unique twists and this book definitely delivers on that front.
The story revolves around Detective Julia, who’s caught in an impossible situation—solve the case of a missing girl or protect her own family by framing someone else. It’s a gripping premise that immediately pulls you in and made me wonder what I would do in a similar situation.
Unfortunately, I found the pacing a bit slow at times. The multiple perspectives were handled smoothly but I just found that that the story dragged in parts. Maybe it’s because I’m not a huge fan of police procedurals, which might be why I didn’t connect with this one as much as I wanted to.
The twist was definitely unexpected and clever, but it just didn’t land for me. While I appreciate McAllister’s creativity, the twist felt a bit far-fetched and left me unsatisfied. It’s one of those moments where you can admire the craftsmanship, but still not fully enjoy the result.
Overall, Just Another Missing Person is a solid read but it didn’t quite live up to Wrong Place Wrong Time. It’s good, but not as memorable.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC (although very late with my review)!
Olivia is 22 and missing. She enters a dead end alley and never comes back out. This is the first mysterious event that greets investigating officer DCI Julia Day. As events unfold we discover more missing girls, estranged boyfriends, grieving parents and some people who aren't what they seem.
As if this is not complex enough DCI Day is trying to keep her own damning secret and as the storylines merge Julia becomes more and more desperate which not only puts her career at risk but also her family and her life.
I really enjoyed this but the main twist confused me for a while with the back and forth character perspective and I had to re read some so hence the four not five stars. Anyone else may 'get it' and it might just be me so don't let my opinion put you off a great read.
Gillian McAllister isn't everyone's cup of tea but I do enjoy her books. I have read a couple now and the storylines are always good. They do take a bit to get into but once you do, it's worth it. 'Just Another Missing Person,' is the same. Stick with it to the end and you won't be disappointed. Thank you to Gillian McAllister and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first novel by this author so much so that I recommended it to my book club. I also enjoyed this novel, not as much but I thought it was grilling from the very first page and kept my interest throughout.
*Just Another Missing Person* by Gillian McAllister is a compelling read, though it starts off a bit slow and the style can feel a little monotonous at times. However, once it picks up, it becomes a page-turner that I couldn't put down.
The concept is great and the conclusion is both interesting and surprising—definitely not something I saw coming, though it may have been a bit far-fetched throughout. McAllister's writing style is engaging, and I loved the tidbits of information scattered throughout the story that added depth and intrigue.
Despite the slow start, the twists and turns kept me hooked, and the intricate plot made for an enjoyable reading experience. If you're a fan of suspenseful thrillers with unexpected endings, *Just Another Missing Person* is worth a read!
Ooooh get strapped in for a wild ride. Olivia is 22, gone missing and when the cops (Julia and co) investigate they find CCTV when Olivia goes down and alley and never comes out. Where did she go, her family is distraught and Julia is a straight laced cop who will stop at nothing to find her. HOWEVER when Julia is threatened with the thing most important to her and told she mustn't find Olivia she is between a rock and a hard place. Does she protect that which is most important to her whilst compromising Olivia and her own integrity or does she stay true to who she is, give Olivia her best chance/investigate whilst ruining her own life? Decisions decisions.
So basically we have a missing person, a cop being threatened/compromised plus the side line of her family life, issues with husband and teen daughter. Some shady and skulduggery behaviours and people, *gasp* and oh your are kidding WHY WHY would you do that. It is a perfect example of how you are just one decision/action away from spiralling your whole life.
Decent pace, page turning to see ooh where is this going to go, what is X person going to do now. This is maybe the 2nd or 3rd book I have read by this author and got another on my tbrm.
Crime, police investigation, family issues, morality, criminal activities, family ties and more, 4/5 for me this time. She is quite different to a lot of the crime/thriller offers we have so if you haven't read her before it is absolutely worth picking up and giving her a whirl.
Another amazing book from Gillian McAllister. The lengths we will go to to protect and defend our children. There was a gasp from me at the reveal - very well done. Highly recommend!
I really struggled to get into this book so I will not leave a review publicly as it is unfinished....................
This is another gripping read from Gillian McAllister. DCI Julia Day is in charge of the case to solve the mystery of how Olivia, a twenty two year old woman, went missing. She was apparently caught on CCTV entering a dead end alley but she appears to have vanished into thin air. We learn that Julia has a secret past. A masked man forces his way into her car and threatens to reveal this secret unless Julia frames someone for Olivia’s murder. Julia is horrified but realises that if her secret is revealed it will tear her and her family’s lives apart. The story is told from three points of view, Julia’s, Lewis, Olivia’s father and Emma’s, the suspect’s mother. This was a totally gripping read showing what lengths parents will go to to protect their children. It has a clever plot, with likeable characters with so any twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. A brilliant read.
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin books for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Another fabulous psychological thriller from Gillian McAllister! Twists and turns, dark secrets and corruption, this tale has got it all.
DCI Julia Day leads the case of missing 22 year old Olivia, who seems to have disappeared into thin air. But solving the case will come at personal cost to Julia, who must protect her family secrets at all costs.
Gillian's plot is intricate and detailed, and her characters are well rounded. Really enjoyed and keen to read whatever she does next!
I've kind of struggled with how to review this. Because it took me a few attempts to get going. But then, when I did, I was gripped. It's a slow burner of a start. We'll actually imagine a slightly sweaty snail. That felt like the pace to me. Which considering the urgency of the subject was odd.
But then wait! What's this? Who is he? Where did she come from? How on earth is she going to get herself out of this? That snail has just been flambéd .
So hard have I found this to review, I've veered between 3 to 5 stars. Pretty rubbish start, pretty good middle part. Great conclusion. Read it. Bear with. It's worth it.
Gillian McAllister writes books that are almost impossible to pry from your hands - and Just Another Missing Person is no exception. Just utterly gripping - I wasn't as blown away as I have been by some of McAllister's books, but that's not surprising when she writes books of a consistently high standard
Unfortunately after multiple attempts to connect with this book I have had to admit defeat and mark as dnf.
This book was slow to get going and I found the main character irritating. Flaws in the legal procedures I couldn’t overlook. I wanted to love this as it had a clever concept and I liked this author’s previous novel but this didn’t hit the same beats for me sadly.
Gillian McAllister does it again! I absolutely loved this one. A brilliant read that had me gripped until the very last page. 5 stars.
