I had a hard time putting this graphic novel down. Life for Norah takes a surprise turn when she interrupts a strange ritual. Her Aunt has gone missing, and an unlikely ally agrees to help her find them. It soon becomes clear something odd is going on, and it is up to them both to stop it. Once the truth comes out, Norah makes a bold decision, but it ends up paying off. As this graphic novel comes to a close life for Norah will forever be changed.

I’ll start this review by being completely honest, I decided to read Devil on Her Shoulder because of the cover. Well, the title also piqued my interest. It’s safe to say I wasn’t disappointed, which I’m very happy about as this has come back to bite me multiple times.

I have to begin the actual review by talking about the art style. I was completely blown away by the amount of detail in this graphic novel. Usually, I don’t like overly detailed/busy pages, but Devil on Her Shoulder was absolutely gorgeous.

Norah’s character design was so beautiful. I loved her style and also the colour palette used. Basically, I’m a sucker for pink haired characters and Norah might be my new favourite.

The actual story was quite chaotic and I honestly didn’t know what was going on for the most part, but it was interesting. I love anything witchy and Devil on Her Shoulder was really fun.

I’d definitely be interested in reading more stories set in this world if that is something the author has done/is planning to do. I’m also interested in finding more of the illustrator’s work. More graphic novels in this style would be incredible.

Overall, Devil on Her Shoulder was a fun read that had absolutely gorgeous artwork. It fell a little short on story comprehension for me, but that could possibly be a translation issue. It’s a bit chaotic, but I’d expect nothing less from a graphic novel about witches and demons.

OH MY GOODNESS, HOW CUTE. I absolutely adored this comic! It was the perfect, cute, witchy standalone read that I could devour in one day, in one or two brief sittings, and get a full story, a fun ride, and closure at the end!

THE SETTING was brilliant, from the citadel in hell to the topsy-turvy amusement park ride that it presented as its assembly-line of suffering. I got a huge kick out of seeing climate change skeptics being roasted as 'climate skeptikebabs' for demons to eat, and learning Ryan Gosling sold his soul to become irresistible is so funny! Crittertown was beautifully illustrated and the witch academy was just stunning, even if the staff and students absolutely sucked!

THE ART was absolutely beautiful to be sure. Such cute illustrations, magical character designs for both humans and monsters, and the imps and familiars were so cute! Norah was beautiful and all the other witches looked so cool, their sense of style is just great. So many cool outfits! Multiple spreads had me lost zooming in to absorb and admire every last detail. I had a lot of fun with it the locations and set design in particular. So cute and cozy, serving whimsical wholesome Halloween vibes all the way through.

THE PROTAGANIST Norah was cool, sweet, and sympathetic. She managed to be sad and kind of gentle without ever seeming weak or naive. I always felt centered with her on the page and when she was out of view I was always eager to get back to her journey.

Ultimately the weakest part of this was the witch coven storyline. An extra 50-60 pages to flesh out the inner coven politics, witch backstories, and social dynamics and maybe give Norah some more interactions with her coven and classmates would be great. I liked the story but ultimately resolving the plot of Norah being outcast, bullied, and mobbed by the coven did not include them actually being shamed for their behavior or having to reflect on it at all. It's a happy ending because she magically gets cured and stops being an outcast, therefore they stop bullying her - not because bullying outcasts is wrong or they learn to stop socially ostracizing people for dumb reasons.

It's like she got her happy ending because she changed and 'fixed' herself to make other people embrace her. I just didn't love that her conformity meant they never had to actually be held accountable. They're going to be nice to her now because she fits in, so their years of bullying get forgotten or forgiven? I have no clue. I'm glad for Norah all the same, but it left a sour taste in my mouth however unintentional it was.

That said...I would love a sequel, a spin-off, anything else set in this world. Norah and Satan have so much chemistry, I want them to explore their dynamic. I think she might be the only person he could actually love, and the only one willing to put up with him, lol.

Also Norah's aunts deserve a prequel for sure. Loved the relationship between them. We all have a cool aunt or two we're ride or die for. Cool aunts make the world go around.

5/5 stars for sure, a perfect short graphic novel for anybody who likes illustration, Halloween, witches, or cartoons in general. Just stylish, cute, fun, and personable. Should receive a TV adaptation FOR SURE. Netflix, where you at?

Thank you to Netgalley for the review copy!

This was a fun little read, however the story could’ve used a bit more fleshing out. The art style is beautiful and very fitting though.

A graphic novel that tells a captivating story. It kept me guessing as to the real antagonists, or the plot twists, from start to finish. All the while feeding me fantastic and unique artwork. The ending was wholesome despite having to do with demons and witches, and it tied many ends in a cute way.

Definitely recommend it!

Very fun graphic novel. Beautiful artwork and fun storyline about a witch with no magic. Although a quick read it was a delightful one!

I thought this was a good graphic novel. I liked the art style and the story was good, but confusing. It felt like we have jumped into a story that was already in progress and it moved a bit slowly. But the characters were great.

This was a very interesting read. At first it was a bit hard to understand and get into the story. Also, the print with incredibly small. In this, a young girl is a witch with no real magic but she’s trying to learn. Her aunt wants to do something special, and the rest of the coven won’t allow it. So the aunt flies off the study on her own, leaving her niece to figure out what’s happened when she disappears. The niece walked into her aunt’s house, where a demon, or the devil had been summoned through the trial and error of a house pet. This book is both fun and emotional. The illustrations are an amazing adventure in pastel colors. Overall, the book really works, and I would like to see more books in the series.

Thanks NetGalley and Europe Comics for access to this arc.

3/5 stars

The art of this graphic novel is really quite nice, but that's the only thing I really enjoyed. The story was confusing in parts (translation issues maybe?) To the point I paid more attention to the art than the dialogue.

A heartwarming read filled with lovely images and a wonderful story. I found this to be a quick read, but in a positive way, as the characters were likable even when supposedly dislikable.

I recommend this book to younger readers in middle school, as that's the intended audience.

The cover reminded me of the classic W.I.T.C.H. comics so much, it made me request this arc! And really, the artwork - the background detail in particular - is absolutely marvellous. I just can't resist an illustration of a cross-sectioned house. But the basic plot and the poor dialogie (translation?) is where it lost me. The comic is called... "Devil on Her Shoulder"... because the Devil, whom the heroine has made a bargain with... is contained in her backpack. Ok. And what's up with the Harry Potter reference in the year 2023 AD? Still, I believe creative young readers might find enjoyment in this read.

This was a fun quick read. The art was gorgeous. as usual but I felt the story couldve used a bit more fleshing out.

Hmm... this just wasn't for me. It's not bad, Nothing about it was a turn off, it just didn't connect with me. However, my niece quite enjoyed it,

Devil on Her Shoulder follows a young witch in training called Norah as she seeks out her missing auntie the Bruja, who happens to be the most powerful witch in the city. With the help of Lucifer who's legless and bound into a backpack due to an unfortunate summoning that didn't quite go right. This graphic novel is a sweet coming of age story filled with magic. The beautiful illustrations that help create the magical atmosphere whilst implying something darker lurks beneath the surface within this story and is perfect for fans of the show The Owl House but wanting something aimed at an older audience.

Magic, rebels and relationships. These are the themes of the story.

When her aunt goes missing, Norah discovers that the aunt's 'minions' tried to find her and accidently summoned Lucifer. Now she has to help Lucifer return back to hell in exchange for his help to find her aunt.

There's more to the story but I will let you find out yourself,

Thank you NetGalley and Europe Comics for giving me the opportunity to read this!

I really enjoyed the graphic novel. I absolutely liked the drawing style. The illustrations are gorgeous and stunnig! The pages are totally beautifully designed. I always enjoyed looking at the pictures. The plot is exciting and entertaining. It remained exciting and thrilling until the end. The characters are well designed and dynamic. You will take them to your hearts and enjoy their story.

This is just a lovely comic, the drawings and coloring are gorgeous.
You can just feel love the Devil has for Norah and the chemistry these two have just leaps of off the pages. It's a fun and mysterious read, although I figured out who was behind it all the moment I met him the comic kept you on your toes and I just could not put it down!
A must read for everyone who love's magic and who's up to some reference hunting! 😆

Devil on Her Shoulder by Cédric Mayen & Sandra Cardona is a graphic novel. The Bruja is missing! When the most powerful witch alive disappears without a trace, Norah, her 17-year-old niece, decides to investigate. But upon entering her aunt’s manor, she interrupts a summoning ritual and finds herself face to face with the devil… Or half of him, anyway, as he has been cut in two and is now stuck in a pentagram. Unable to return to Hell without Norah’s help, Lucifer agrees to assist her in finding the Bruja—a devilish task when you’re the most feared and hated being on the planet!

Devil on Her Shoulder is a graphic novel that I greatly enjoyed, and think would be suitable for a wide range of readers. I liked the set up and the execution of the story. While there were some aspects that I predicted, that only made the ride and reveal more interesting as I brought along for the ride. I enjoyed the personalities that were engrained in each of the major characters- and how well they traits of each character were portrayed in their facial expressions on the page. I greatly enjoyed the read and think readers from middle school on up will be able to enjoy and connect with aspects of the story. I will be looking for what else this creative team has worked on, and hopefully more of these characters in the future.

Devil on Her Shoulder is an engaging story with artwork to match.
