I am not finishing a book that is being published in the year 2023 that has a Harry Potter reference. Just full stop right when it showed up and didn't even finish the page.
Which is a shame because I was really getting into the story and the art style, we didn't even need the HP reference it was so throw away and could have been left out and then I could have in good faith continued. But twas not to be.
Devil on Her Shoulders is a stunning graphic novel that tells the story of Norah, a young girl struggling to find her place in the world. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful, capturing the emotional depth of the story with stunning visuals that are both poignant and heartwarming.
One of the most remarkable things about Devil on Her Shoulders is how it explores the relationships between Norah and her aunts. The dynamics between them add depth and complexity to the story, which is relatable and thought-provoking. It's a refreshing take on the often-stereotyped portrayal of aunts in popular media.
The plot takes unexpected turns that keep the reader engaged and invested in the characters. The way the story unfolds is both surprising and satisfying, leaving the reader feeling fulfilled and wanting more at the same time.
It's worth noting, however, that the story includes some references to current popular things that might not age well over time. While it adds to the contemporary feel of the story, it also raises some concerns about how it will be perceived in the future.
That being said, Devil on Her Shoulders is still a stunning work of art that delivers on both the visual and narrative fronts. It's a must-read for anyone who appreciates great storytelling, beautiful artwork, and complex relationships.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC of Devil on Her Shoulder.
This was an extremely fun graphic novel with a strong story and beautiful art. I found each character design to be so unique and well thought out (the demons all fitting their different lore/personalities so well) and the overall art style and coloring was so pleasing to look at.
The story of this book is very detailed and well thought out. It has a lot of depth to the adventure of it all and Norah is in for much more than she bargained for while looking for her missing aunt when she comes across a half-summoned Lucifer!
I think there were some parts that were a bit text heavy due to the detail story so maybe a slightly longer book or a 2nd volume would have been beneficial as some of the backstory we dont really get could have gotten more time, but overall i think the pacing worked fine and everything was smooth to read and understand! I really enjoyed this one and I think a lot of people will find the same enjoyment when it hits the shelves!
There is so much in this one bind up of the graphic novel.
It does not have a lot of pages, but man, is it stacked with story.
I was not the biggest fan of the art style, but I am a fan of the story.
All the crazy mischief going on, that turns out to be so much more than just that.
Also the dynamic between some of the characters had me laughing out loud.
I would absolutely recommend this one, if you like a little bit of weird in your stories, and a funny as all hell devil.
2.5 stars
I'm almost unsure of this one. I liked the art style and premise, but the story itself felt very rushed at times. The pop culture references were also not a hit with me as it takes me out of the story.
Wowowoq the illustrations in this book are so so beautiful! The level of detail and just creativity in the depictions of hell, heaven etc. was just really really great!
First up a big big thank you for allowing me to read this one! Sadly, I didn't click with the story/characters.
What I loved:
+ The cover + the art, those are both so so stunning and it was a feast for the eye. Well, OK, I had to zoom in to read the text so the art was a bit blurry, but I still enjoyed it.
+ The way the magic was drawn was so pretty + I loved reading about the magic
+ Cute creatures
- I couldn't connect with the characters. I really didn't care that much for the Bruja, and her niece? Eh. Maybe if she had an ounce of magic in her, but I am just a bit tired of the trope of magical world and there is one person who doesn't have it (though generally that trope ends with that person having the most magic, which always makes me eyes roll). I also wasn't a fan that people would bully her for it. Another thing I can do without.
- The story. Maybe if we hadn't seen the Bruja disappear (and we can get a hint where she went) it would have worked for me. Now we know partially what is up and for me that is the mystery gone.
- I am sorry but I had to zoom into around 150+% to get to read the font, still blurry along with the art, but at least more readable. Please, if you make a review copy for an ebook make the font readable.
When the most powerful witch of the clan disappears, her teen niece sets on a task to find her. With no magical powers, a demon at the door and a conquest on the way, this does seem like a little too much on the young one's shoulders. Nevertheless, a strong will is all it takes to move forward and face the devil!
This 100+ pages graphic novel felt like a perfect length to me. The graphics were beautifully designed and the witchy genre made it more catchy for me. The book was engaging, perfectly lengthen and fast-paced - without skipping the details. Which to me sounds like a perfect read.

Rating: 4/5 star ⭐️
This comic is beautifully drawn and filled with lots of humor. The main character is also really likeable, you empathise with her a lot as she takes of on the journey to save her aunt. It's fun to read a story that's about both witches and the devil. There are also a few plottwists integrated into the storyline.
On the downside, there were a few inconsistencies both the story and in the characters that bothered me while reading. The pacing also didn't feel right. I didn't get drawn into the story, hence 3/5 stars.
Thank you NetGalley for this review copy.
This is the first graphic novel that I've read, and I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging and interesting the story was. The art was so good, and I think I loved the art more than anything else; it really made my enjoyment of the story even more. This story is about a witch who can't practice her magic and has no powers. She teams up to work with the devil to find her aunt, a very powerful witch, who has gone missing. This was such a cute story, I wasn't sure what to expect, but the team-up with the 17-year-old girl and the devil was kinda wholesome. I also really liked the world, the magic, and the mystery that was in this story. I'm going to try to read more graphic novels because I enjoyed this.
Thank you, Netgalley and Europe Comics, for this arc.
Devil on Her Shoulder is a fun, fast paced story about the most powerful witch alive disappearing and her nieces journey to find and save her.
The art is STUNNING. While I do think this story could have used more pages to flesh out the world better it is so engrossing. I am definitely interested in checking out more work from this pair.
Let me start by saying that if you are looking for a breathtakingly beautiful book for a girl in your life who loves graphic novels – THIS IS IT! The book’s pub date was a few days ago, so this one is already available everywhere where books are sold online!
The artwork alone is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. The book feels like a work of art just because of the art. The story is lovely too, of course, but the artwork is truly outstanding.
The book is filled with magical things and brings you into a magical world of a… witch with no skills and no powers. So she teams up with the devil to find her missing aunt. I know it might sound weird – what, a girl and devil, noooooo, no way. But nope, hear me out, it is actually cute!
My 10yr old read it too and she says she wants more, she wants way more, she wants a zillion books by the same authors/artists. She says she would rate the book more than five stars if she could, and she says she would really want a sequel to this, although she does realize that the book does not call for a part two. All I can say there is that I completely agree with her. Me too, little one, me too. I too would love part two, part three, and part five hundred of this book.

This was a very cute comic about a witch with no magic who needs to team up with the devil to find her aunt. I found the story to be really good with a great arc and cute side characters. The art was absolutely gorgeous! I was really floored by how incredible the art was for this comic. It was beautifully whimsical and intricate.
[ ARC ] Devil On Her Shoulder written by Sandra Cardona and Cédric Mayen
About:
● The most powerful witch alive disappears and her seventeen year old niece takes it upon herself to investigate
Notes (SPOILERS - only in this section):
● okay, but the devil teaching a 17 year old witch how to fly their broom. Yes I love that.
Positives:
● The artist makes the difference of Norah compared to the other students clear with use of hair colour (page 5)
● creative use of different characters having different levels of verbalism
● so many details and I love the thought that went into them (Lego treadmills on p40)
● not much of it was expected
● wholesome and adorable, despite literally having the devil as a character
Negative:
● only negative is that I want more
Favourite quotes:
● "nothing like a magic kiss to heal little boo-boos" - page 8
● " 'but you must have some ambition. Let's see... want to be rich, famous, respected?'
'What for? I don't think it would make me any happier. I just want to find my aunt.' "
● "Don't try to fight us, kid. After all, hell's not so bad." - page 89
● "I can't make any promises, because magic is like life: unpredictable and full of uncertainty. Yet we have no choice but to trust in it." - page 108
5*
I thoroughly enjoyed this graphic novel from the moment I turned the page. From the artwork to the characters, every moment felt truly embedded in the magic of the worlds that Norah and Luci inhabit. From the contrast and parallels of Hell and Critter Town to the threat, mystery, and intrigue of Norah and Luci's journey, the characters and colours led me eagerly from page to page.
The artwork was absolutely beautiful, I love the color palette. But the writing wasn’t great and the story was convoluted, the characters didn’t have much personality. I would’ve DNFed if it wasn’t a graphic novel but since it was a fairly quick read, I gave it a shot and finished it.
A big thanks to NetGalley and Europe Comics for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
A fun little graphic novel filled with magic and mystery.
Devil on Her Shoulder by Cédric Mayen and Sandra Cardona is a graphic novel that follows the story of Norah, following the disappearance of her aunt. Also known as the greatest witch of all time. But when Norah visit's her Aunt's home to find clues to her location, she instead finds the half of a the literal devil. With Lucifer caught in a pentagram with no way of getting out, he makes a deal with Norah to aid her in finding her aunt.
I thought this was a lovely little graphic novel with a compelling plot and adorable characters. Though I will say the pacing felt like a 300 page book smashed and snipped into being only 100 pages. Regardless, the art was beautiful and I simply wish to read by these authors.

I really enjoyed this graphic novel!
Especially because this novel was designed very beautifully, the details were carefully chosen, the length was also very appealing to me, but an attempt was that everything squished into 100+ pages, which was a bit of a shame.
All in all, I really liked the graphic novel!
3.5/5
I think this is the most beautiful color palette I have ever seen in a graphic novel.
These colors just work amazingly together. The art in general is incredible, it's so detailed even in the wide shots there are so many little objects or details, I loved it! Plus there are some easter eggs here and there in the texts.
I was so close to give it the full 4 stars but then the whole explanation at the end got me by surprise and I couldn't properly follow it completely and felt I had to downgrade the rating a little.
I loved how the are so many elements in here, there's magic, there's witches, there's demons, hell, heaven, creatures, mysteries, unknown origins and so on. This started off amazingly and everything was blended pretty nicely together but then all of a sudden the plot started to take off too rapidly and all of a sudded I started to feel confused in some parts and then boom, book finished.
I felt that the story in the end was squeezed last minute and some parts were rushed too much, parts that for me were essential for the whole plot development.
Pity because it was going so good and was so hooked by it.
It was anyway a very good read despide being too fast towards its end.
