The characters and the story executed well, with the pretty illustrations and the color dynamics *chef kiss*.
Thank you netgalley for providing me this e-arc. Devil on Her Shoulder is such a good read!
*thank you to NetGalley for giving me access to this book*
The art style gave me Winx Club vibes for some reason and I love that! The story was good and the drawing were really nice to look at. I think I'll buy this once it's published
"Devil on her shoulder" by Cedrik Mayen & Sandra Cardona
⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really enjoyed the colors and the art style of this graphic novel! It was indeed very cute, and weirdly trying to be wholesome and cutesy, but barely succeedinh. I did feel that there were scenes missing, and it could have used better flow when changing scenes. I would have loved some more lore and backstory, as it felt as if things were just happening, just because.. And the FMC was just *so special* which I can deal with up to a certain point tbh. Also the devil was not "deviling".
Thank you @netgalley and @europecomics for providing this ARC
This was a good graphic novel without demanding a lot from the readers to begin with.
The structure of the story was good and the characters were a bit one dimensional but they executed what was expected of them.
My favorite part of this graphic novel was the art style. I loved how it captured the novel's main spooky theme. I just loved looking at the illustrations.
Devil on her Shoulder is a fantasy graphic novel that focuses on the adventure of one witch trying to find her Aunt. The adventure sees her joining forces with the Devil himself. The overall story is fantastic! The artwork in the book is beautiful.
Sandman meet Owl House is the best way I can think of to describe this graphic novel. It's so refreshing to see a heroine who is smart and self-sufficient enough not to make totally irrational choices and instead really steer the story.
I particularly enjoyed the art, which was both really pretty and quirky in a great way. The characters all felt well-developed and cleverly executed, with just enough world-building in order for the story to make sense, but not feel overpowering.
My only quibble is that the beginning felt a bit stilted and didn't totally make sense until later in a way that made me wonder if I missed something. Overall, however, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys graphic novels with strong women protagonist and happy endings.
HAPPY PUB DAY!!!
This book was an interesting story about a girl whose aunt disappears, so she goes to look for her aunt. But she has to work with the devil in order to find her. It was cool to see it from the girl's POV, as someone who didn't know much about the magic world, but everyone around her does. I think the authors and illustrators did a good job of creating her world of cluelessness in a way that wasn't cringey. The scenes where she finally learns the supposed secrets that everyone else around her knew but she didn't were also written very well.
This was a fun graphic novel! I loved the art style (particularly all the adorable familiars!) and the story was enjoyable, though I did struggle occasionally with following along.
The Devil on Her Shoulder follows Norah as she tries to locate her missing aunt, the powerful Bruja witch. She must travel through dimensions, seek out help from demons, and deal with an annoying, legless devil hitching a ride in her backpack. Only adding to her struggle is her complete and total lack of magic. Not even a little spark, despite being related to some of the most powerful witches of all time. Norah doesn't let this stop her from doing whatever it takes to find her aunt, but as she begins to learn new things about herself she must decide who to trust and who she truly wants to be.
Overall, I enjoyed this story. I liked the characters and the art, despite struggling to follow the sequence of events at times. The ending was just too adorable! All-in-all, a fun and quick read!
If you are looking for a YA fantasy graphic novel that is fast paced and has beautiful artwork than this book is for you. Add in magic, missing aunts, the devil, demons and a lot of other twists than you really will love this book.
The cover of this book is what honestly drew me in, the art work is stunning, but the story line was a bit dull to me at points, but I also feel like this book should have been longer and the pace of events spread out a little bit more because everything seemed to go at a lightning fast speed.
Devil On her Shoulder is one of the most beautiful graphic novels I've ever read and a very interesting world building. I loved the whole magical system, super interesting the characterization chosen for the characters, my only problem was the confusion that was left for a few moments and the lack of development of the protagonist. But it was a super fun graphic novel to read and I imagine that a physical edition must be beautiful.
I loved this book so much that I want to give it more than just five stars.
Has just fantastic, beautiful, and so dinamic how the story is shown to us. The colors bring live to the sensations of the images, that are very well worked, with so much atencion, detail and love. We really feel the love put in the book.
We enter the story and we are driven by strong willed and resilient characters that see themselves in situations they never thought of. Along with some magic and mystery, was so fun and entertaining. I have loved it.
This book did not do it for me. The art is STUNNING (love the cluttercore aesthetic!!) but the story suffered from too much worldbuilding and not enough character development. A lot of stuff was happening, but other than the sad little bubble demon, I wasn't invested in the characters at all. That's a dealbreaker for me.
I really liked the art style for this, it is truly gorgeous. However, I did DNF because the story felt kind of confusingly written to me. It seemed to jump around a lot and I wasn't the best at following along with it.
This was a super cute book and I enjoyed the idea and the ending. I struggled at some points to understand what was going on, but overall, I really enjoyed it. I loved the artwork too! It was beautifully done. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
2.75 ⭐️ This was my first ever graphic novel which I think is a part of the reason I gave this a low rating, I’m not used to this kind of story telling and I was finding it hard to keep up with the super quick story progression. I was confused throughout most of the book, but once again, that could just be blamed on the fact that I’m unfamiliar with graphic novels. Besides that, I thought the illustrations were beautiful and this book is suitable for any age.
A fun story that’ll also make you break in cold sweat - it’s only natural, because one of the main characters is Lucifer himself!
Like any important witch, La Bruja wants to make an impression at the Fall Sabbath, so she prepares her rejuvenation potion, locks her pets in the house, seals off the exits to all the parallel universes, and takes off on her broom through the clouds.
Two weeks later, the abandoned pets are dying of thirst, so Bruja's familiar tries to use an old spell book to ward off the Horn of Plenty. At the same time, Norah, the witch's niece, decides to break down the house’s door, alarmed by her aunt's long absence - and stumbles upon... the Devil, (half-)conjured by the familiar.
As you may have already guessed from the title, the Devil ends up hidden in Norah's backpack, the two of them joining forces in the long investigation that follows, sort of an “Alice in Witchland” full of zany and absurd situations.
This “complete edition” builds upon the first volume, adding 67 more pages and bringing the story to a nice and tidy conclusion. Sandra Cardona's art is a bit uneven - feminine, playful and filled with details, yet a little more rushed in the second part of the book and in the filler pages (you’ll know which ones they are by how empty the backgrounds look). As for Cedric Mayen’s story, it’s funny, starts mysterious and YA, only to end up more... childish. I have a feeling this was supposed to be a trilogy that ended up as a diptych that turned into a single volume, so everything had to be wrapped asap and as clear as possible. Well, mission accomplished! I only hope these two will be given enough time.. next time :) to truly demonstrate their skills.
I have already read the first volume, but I received the complete edition from netgalley dot com in exchange for a honest review. That does not influence my opinion in any way.
This book was funny, and so immersive. I was on it, this book made me enjoy reading again. I was in the worst reading slump until I read this. The art is beautiful, the story was compelling. I just have the biggest smile on my face right now.
Devil on her shoulder is a YA fantasy graphic novel all about a young witch in training named Norah who ends up with the literal devil on her shoulders after an incomplete summoning ceremony. Together they have to fight forces of both hell and earth in order to save Norah’s auntie, the Bruja.
First of, I love the art style of this graphic novel. And also all the designs for the little creatures and the servants of hell. I also liked Norah, and the humour her characters banter results in.
My biggest complaint is that the pacing was too fast, and thus nothing was ever really properly explained. I think it would have benefited both the story and the characters if the novel had been longer. Because while I liked it, it left me wishing there had been more to it.
I have read graphic novel after so many years and it was such an enthralling experience. I loved the graphics and storytelling in this book. When the most powerful witch suddenly disappears, Norah, her 17 years old niece ventures on an odyssey to find her. She summons a devil and make a deal with him to find her aunt Bruja. The book has revolutionary spell, ritual, summoning, hell, witches and damnation.
I read in few hours. Thank you Netgalley, Authors and the Publisher.
Thank you NetGalley for an e-arc of this book. I was intrigued by the idea of a world of witches and the devil summoned.
The story follows Norah as she is trying to find her missing aunt, the Bruja. She has a special helper for this task - half of the Devil, who was summoned to her world by Bruja's minions/familiars. The story takes some interesting turns and I loved it.
The world building is awesome, the art in this comic offers so much and I really would love to read a full series set in this world. I have so many questions about little details I could find on the pages and I really wish there are more books. In terms of characters, I feel like there is enough background story about Norah and Bruja, but I really would like to find out more about the rest of the characters, especially about the Witch Council. With this in mind, I think we had enough information to understand the story.
There were some really funny moments in there and the interaction between the Devil and Norah were awesome! There is a twists about their relationship by the end of the book and I loooooved it!!
I highly recommend this book and I really wish for more books in this world!
