Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for easily giving me this graphic novel.
Unfortunately I didn’t really enjoy it because the font was just too small and the storyline just felt all over the place. Although I’ll give an extra star for the art as it was really nice, it’s just too bad the rest was meh ;/
A teenage witch searching for her aunt, The Bruja? This story was fun, fast paced, and magical. The art in this graphic novel is GORGEOUS and the banter early on between the FMC & the Devil was *chef's kiss*
I received a copy from Netgalley in exchange for reviewing the book, that does not influence my opinion.
This book is stunning. It's what drew me to read it. The plot sounded like so much fun!
The book follows Norah, a witch with no powers. She encounters Lucifer in an effort to find her missing aunt.
Unfortunately, once I got to the content it felt like the author had a 300 page plan that got squished into 100. Everything happened at lightning speed, the pacing felt inorganic.
While I do read YA from time to time, this went younger than YA for me. I absolutely loved Norah, but I felt myself wanting the author to take things up a notch with the story.
Sometimes when I read graphic novels I feel like the format isn’t being used to it’s best advantage and the storytelling feels too slow or shallow. This book was the complete opposite; I’m amazed by the comprehensive world building, fast-paced plot and well-earned character development that was created in so few pages! The art was beautiful and just as creative and surprising as the story itself. I love that I wasn’t able to predict how the story would unfold. The plot itself felt like reading an epic fantasy compressed into express delivery format. For the first time ever I finished a graphic novel and wanted to reread it immediately!
Part fairy tale, part Hell realm. Fully cohesive and captivating. Unlike some graphic novels that are all action with little substance, this graphic novel has a vibrant, fully-developed plot and diverse characters that hooked me in and kept me engaged.
Great art which is as detailed as the story. I especially loved all the bruja's plant-like creatures.
And for all the Harry Potter fans out there, there's even a mention of Harry Potter!
An engaging and fun read. Very good graphic novel.
I loved the art in this so so much! Absolutely stunning. It was such a good read. Everything went so well together and it got me out of my reading slump I have had for a little bit. Absolutely recommend people give this a shot whether it’s an arc copy or the final version!
Devil on Her Shoulder is such a fantastic, fun, and whimsical story! The illustrations are so beautiful and really add life to the already amazing story. The story offers a wide variety of characters and creatures that are easy to love and build an inviting world around them. It is a perfect book for any young person with a supernatural interest and for any person who appreciates incredible and intricate art!
Wow - there's so much to love about this book!
The first thing I noticed was how detailed everything was right off the bat; the witches' thrones, the potion bottle, the background wallpaper in some of the rooms, and especially the architecture were so intricate and magical to look at - I found myself pausing quite frequently to just admire it all!
The characters were varied and unique - I particularly enjoyed the Devil's shapeshifting. Every witch and demon had their own aesthetic and vibe, and you can see the artist really poured everything they had into it.
The story was also just a generally fun story. It had its whimsies and its silliness, but also the occasional thoughtful moment. It wasn't difficult to follow, despite the many characters and highly detailed panels - having read a lot of graphic novels, I find that action scenes tend to get confusing and muddled, but I didn't have any such issues with this one. All in all, a joy to read.
This is an interesting story. The search for her missing Aunt, sends witch Norah (her witch skills are nothing to brag about, in fact they are really awful) on an adventure with the Devil. Does the Devil have a good side and her best interests at heart? Will Norah find her Aunt and can she survive the experience? Or will the Devil lead her astray? Read and find out! Thank you to Europe Comics and NetGalley for the ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
This comic was like a whirlwind. The tale follows Norah, a young woman who lives in a magical world, except for the fact that she is, to all intents and purposes, normal. Her aunt known as the Bruja (which means "Witch") seems to be in charge of the witches council of Critter Town. The Bruja goes missing, and Norah teams up with the Devil to save her aunt and stop a coup in Hell. The art style was fantastic, and very reminiscent of W.I.T.C.H., with great architecture and little cute monsters too. The plot was good and we got to see a little bit of the worlds in which Norah and the Devil live. I enjoyed reading the story.
However, I did say at the start it was like a whirlwind. On one hand, it had all the positives I mentioned before and was full of colour and imagination - but on the other hand, the pacing felt almost too fast at points, and I think there could have been more done on worldbuilding - there were a lot of extra characters who looked great, but whom the reader learnt very little about, and it seemed that the Devil in this context was responsible for a great deal of things including the creation of Critter Town - but his sense of humour was quite good too. All in all, it was still an enjoyable read and I look forward to reading future comics from the authors.
Thanks for the advance read in exchange for an honest review!

Devil on Her Shoulder is a short tale about a teenage witch going on a journey with the Devil to find her aunt, the Bruja. I am so pleasantly surprised at how well-paced this novel is! It does have a quick pace, but it's evenly paced and keeps it steady from start to finish. The plot is straightforward and is a charming read. I love that it balanced levity and serious moment in such a good way. I adore the art style! Something about it is just so fun to look at! Some things were left a bit up in the air, such as how exactly the magic system works or how the academy Norah goes to functions. But neither of those is really all that integral to the overall plot, so it is easily excused. This was such a good read, and I honestly think it would make a great animated movie!
The graphics were amazing, the storyline was easy to follow, simple at times however quick paced but never the less intresting and exciting, and if others followed I would read those also. Great enjoyable read as a book break.
The summary of this book was quite intriguing, but I ended up being more captivated by the art. While the art is gorgeous, the story could have used more development with the characters and the world. For example, there were some characters, like the witch council, who were felt like they were kind of shoved in at the end to advance the story. Things like this caused the story to feel stunted and rushed. That aside, it was still a pleasant read.
A story about a magicless witch who is forced to work with the devil in order to find her missing aunt. While the story itself is intriguing, the artwork is definitely its strongest point. From the details, the color palette, and the character designs. The art gave the story a nice muted whimsical tone.
For the story, while interesting, the pacing was a bit off. I felt things were happening too fast, so much so, that I got confused at times. The story should've been longer, to allow time to flesh out the characters and storyline. I also wish there was more worldbuilding, as the designs were amazing. While this was by no means amazing, the story is still pretty interesting, and if anything, at least it's visually appealing.
What a great little graphic novel!
I loved the pop culture references throughout and the story writing was great.
The graphics were beautiful and I enjoyed finding references in the busy pictures.
I would read more from this author!
A cute story about a wich whit no powers who am trying to find her ant you has disappeared and maybe she is teaming up whit some not so good companiens.
i realy enjoyed this graphig novel, and i laught out loud more than once
A kind of humorous adventure/mystery/fantasy story with demons, missing witch aunts, mysterious origins, all the hits. The art in this was really beautiful, and the coloring! Great work.
I really enjoyed this graphic novel. The art on the cover drew me in and I was not disappointed, the art style and the colors are amazing, I sometimes spent a few minutes just looking at the details of the drawings.
It was a short and entertaining read, the story is fun and would be perfect to read for Halloween. However, the pop culture references sometimes threw me off as I thought the story was taking place in a different universe altogether.
The plot and the characters were interesting, the familiars and other animals brought cuteness to it all, and I can’t wait to see where Norah’s adventures are going to take her.
I absolutely love this one. Having read other reviewers saying that it is too YA, I am beginning to wonder if I have the heart of a YA in a 50 something body. I
It is a story about a girl with no magic striking a deal with the devil in order to search for her aunt -- the most powerful witch.
It talks about witches and devil but it is not scary at all. The artwork is absolutely stunning. I love it and I believe that KS3 students would love this too.
The illustrations were beautiful! I loved the storyline and characters and their banter. I also loved how quick and fun this was. I will say, this was a bit too YA for me but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
