This is a stunning book, approximately A3 size in hardback, and full of gorgeous poems and stories about trees and the beauty of nature. The poetry has a traditional feel to it, although I felt some were a little long, and would be perfect to use in any classroom or it would make a wonderful special occasion gift. There's a huge amount of knowledge and celebration amongst the pages, prompting children to observe and really think about what is around them. The accompanying illustrations are glorious too - this is a treat of a book!
This book is perfect in every way. Not only does it contain a gorgeous selection of poems and stories by Michael Morpurgo, but it also has the most delightful illustrations by Yuval Zommer. The collaboration between a best selling author and an award winning artist guaranteed that this book would be something rather special.
Written in celebration of trees in all their forms - it is a book very relevant to today's environment. It looks at the impact that trees have on our lives, in our communities as well as in the wider world.
I highly recommend this collection of poems and stories. Regardless of whether you have a child in your life to share this with, it makes for lovely reading and I can envisage dipping back into it periodically.
What a beautiful book from start to finish!
I loved Michael Morpurgo's books as a child, so when I saw My Heart Was A Tree on NetGalley, I was so excited!
Filled with gorgeous illustrations on every page, My Heart Was A Tree is a collection of poems and stories for children to celebrate trees - how wonderful is that...
My heart was touched a number of times while reading this book. It was lovely to be reminded of the strong connections we, as humans, can have with trees, and also of how many species depend on the existence of trees - including us.
The poems also highlight some important issues such as wildfires, war, global warming and palm oil plantations.
I recommend this book to absolutely anyone and everyone!
Thank you to NetGalley & Macmillan's Children's Books for this DRC
What a delightful collection of poems and stories linked by the common theme of trees. I've often thought that if trees could talk, they would have some fantastic tales to tell as they've listened any observed the many changes that happen unnoticed by many. My favourite poem was Driftwood about the nine lives lived by the tree. I can't wait to share this with my class at school as they are passionate readers of poetry. Hopefully it will inspire them to write even more poems of their own.
A really beautiful book, with wonderful illustrations that gives a range of short stories and poems about trees.
I loved how the illustrations brought the writing to life and that the poems and stories emphasised the importance of trees and the natural world. A few were quite emotional, others were poignant and vital.
This book was an absolute treat to read - filled with gorgeous illustrations and poems, with some short stories along the way.
Really informative and full of awareness, this book really got me thinking about trees and what it is that they do, and what we do to them. A narrative on the destruction man can unleash on woodlands and forests and the drastic effect this can have on all those who live within them. The trees that stand for hundreds of years, watching and protecting. Trees are everywhere and they're always important and this book is there to remind us of that.
I really enjoyed this reading experience and have an even stronger appreciation for all that trees do. Can't wait to see what Morpurgo does next!
