Serafina is a young girl who lives on the coast in South Africa with her grandfather, who is working to preserve marine wildlife and organising volunteers to help with regular clean-ups of the beaches. Serafina and her best friend Harry are also active in the conservation movement.
One day, during a clean-up when very few volunteers have shown up to help, Serafina and Harry are able to free a baby sea turtle from a plastic bag. They are both appalled at the dreadful impact that single-use plastics are having on the marine ecosystem and the creatures living within it.
To make matters worse, there are unscrupulous people who want to profit from the trade in endangered species. It takes courage and creativity for Serafina and Harry to deal with the challenges that they face - especially after they have a falling out - but they do receive some help from an unexpected source!
This is a sweet story which will hopefully inspire young readers to care more about the ocean environment and the need to protect endangered species.
Serafina and Harry's adventure is fun to read, and the illustrations are excellent. The diversity element so intrinsic to South Africa is addressed with some subtlety.
The book also includes some useful information about how the challenges faced by conservationists can be explained to children, and what they can do to do their part in bringing about change.
