I've read all this series books and I found this one a bit hard to get into, but when i did I found the premise quite clever. I am getting a bit bored of Warwick's feud with Miles Faulkner - it's getting a bit repetitive and insular with few characters.
A thoroughly researched and well written novel. It was a fun read and the characters were more than plausible. The plot was pace-ridden and well structured. I haven’t read a lot of Mr Archer but I’ll be certainly jumping onto the other Warwick novels.
Another spectactular story from Jeffrey Archer. The way he writes brings so much energy to the story and you become immediately involved. This one had my heart going at a rate of knots towards the end. A new way of looking at the Crown Jewels.
I am enjoying my reintroduction to Jeffrey Archer, so much so that have booked with a friend to go to one of his talks. This book is like the others - it is a fun read, doesn't take itself seriously and really is part of another world but it just spreads through.
It was interesting remembering the Concorde, princess Diana. You could tell that it was very well researched.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
A fun, easy to read, crime caper. Took a little while to get going and so a longer time to read than I’d have liked but the scene setting was mostly necessary and I enjoyed the end third.
Whether octogenarian Archer really wrote this alone remains to be seen (I suspect at least a ghost writing hand for brand Archer) but it was good fun regardless and I’ll be back for more William Warwick.
Thank you Netgalley and Harper Collins for my copy.
The latest William Warwick by Jeffrey Archer. I wait for these impatiently and this one didn't disappoint. Marvellously complicated, Miles Faulkner is a pantomime grade baddy with his sidekick, lawyer, Booth Watson and a cast of extras. As always his wife Christina is unpredictable and on the side of the money. Continuing his meteoric rise to the top brass in the Metropolitan Police of the 1980s, William Warwick, head of Royal Protection is promoted to Chief Superintendent. Faulkner's main focus is to bring him down. Beth Warwick, back as Director of the Fitzmolean Gallery is also on his hit list. Will Miles be able to pull off a daring raid, steal the Crown Jewels and humiliate the Warwicks? As always, you are never sure who will triumph. I read this in a day and am now devastated that it's over. Truly Archer is the master storyteller. #netgalley #TraitorsGate #jeffreyarcher
Archer has done it again, writing a political thriller that draws to the heights of the British monarchy and down into the depths of the London underworld. A fast-paced thriller set in the 90's, when the world felt a little smaller, and not all answers were at the touch of a button. A must-read for fans of his work.
As with all Jeffrey Archer books this was an easy to read, fast paced novel. Humorous, and well researched when it comes to police protocols. Although this is a book in a series regarding William Warwick and Ross Hogan, it works well as a stand alone novel.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins for the advance copy of this book.
Another brilliant William Warwick novel. They are always beautifully written and well researched. Along with a fast paced and fascinating crime novel you get a fascinating insight into some of the history of the crown jewels and their role in today's world. Amazing and thrilling.
This is book six in this brilliant series that really should be read in order for maximum enjoyment.
So.. every year, on the State Opening of Parliament, the reigning Monarch wears the Crown Jewels. This involves a high security operation to fetch them from the Tower of London, present them to the Monarch to wear at the ceremony, and then return to the Tower afterwards. It is a cloak and dagger operation, the ins and outs of which are closely guarded secrets right up to the wire. So it would probably be impossible to steal them, wouldn't it?
But someone is planning to do just that. And he has a man on the inside to help. And a very big reason to pull it off... And time is ticking for Warwick and all to stop it happening.
Spoilers prevent me from saying anything more about the plot of this book but, if you have read the previous books, and you have, haven't you? You'll pretty much know who and why, and have guessed that it is a whole lot more than just the Jewels.
And that's why this author is king of what he does.
Outwith the main story, Beth also has her own side-story around her current job and a possible job change. This complements the main story very well. As do all the catch-ups from various other series characters I have grown quite fond of in the previous 5 books.
All in all, a cracking addition to a very solid series.
My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Jeffrey Archer has once again shown that he is an excellent writer. His "Traitors Gate" will make a huge sensation in the book world. An interesting crime story with Buckingham Palace in the background. The Queen will also be there.
A few words about the content of the book. Will it be possible to overthrow Superintendent Warwick? Why did he deserve this? What did he do?
Is it possible to steal the crown jewels?
Will Miles Faulkner agree to finance Satan's plan? Is the risk worth the candle?
The second heroine is Dr. Beth Warwick. She's just interviewed for a job as director of the Fitzmolean. Why does he want to take this position? This means a significant drop in her income. What was it that tempted her? Why was Christina Faulkner the only one against this candidate? Did she know something more? She is Beth's friend. Do you dig holes under your friends?
I liked the history of the Tower of London through one character in this book. A very interesting spy crime story. I read and didn't believe what I was reading. I liked the intrigue I found in this book. Fast-paced action with amazing twists and turns did not allow you to put this story aside even for a minute. The characters in this book are very diverse. I wonder if a similar story could happen today. There is risk, there is fun. He who doesn't take risks doesn't drink champagne.
If you like interesting spy crime stories, you should like this one.
I'm in favour of this, and what about you?
I recommend.
Another great, fast-paced book in the William Warwick series.
William & Ross again face-off against their adversary Mikes Faulkner in this race against time. As always, the action kept me glued to the pages, trying to see how Faulkner would fare in this latest, and probably most daring, heist, intricately planned for maximum impact.
The insight that readers get, of the procedures behind events, like The State Opening Of Parliament are intrinsically delightful, coming from an author who would be ‘in the know’. They add such a depth to the believability and plausibility of the story.
What I also particularly enjoy in these books, is the family element, with Peter, Artemisia and Jojo alongside the wonderfully intelligent Beth. It’s like meeting up with friends when the familiar and fascinating characters appear, like Sir Julian and Grace and Hawksby of course.
When you pick up a Jeffrey Archer book, you know you are in for a treat from the master of story-telling and this one was definitely worth the wait.
I’ve not read a Jeffrey Archer book for some years but after reading this one I’m asking myself why not? Although part of a series it read easily as a standalone novel. The premise of stealing the Crown Jewels was an interesting one and the plotting of the crime was realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and intend to read the previous books in the series. I can’t recommend more highly than this!
Having really enjoyed the previous book in the Detective William Warwick series there was no way that I was not going to pick up the next instalment to see what was in store for Warwick and his team. Once a year the crown jewels are removed from safety for the state opening of parliament and Warwick is part of the team trusted to ensure that they are moved safely between locations. This has always gone without a hitch until now. Someone he has crossed paths with is back, and he is determined to settle old scores and see Warwick disgraced and if he can take down some of the people he is close to both personally and professionally in the process so much the better.
I am really becoming a fan of William Warwick. He is dedicated to his job, family and colleagues in equal measure and will go to any lengths to help and protect them even when the outcome may not be what he hopes. He is really up against it this time as he has to work to help his wife keep her dream job, his best friend out of prison and find the stolen crown jewels before it ends his own career and that of his boss.
Miles Faulkner seems to be one step ahead at every turn as he has enlisted the help of others who would love to see Warwick brought down a peg or two. They know all the details of the routes and procedures that are followed and for a price they are willing to share them. As much as I want to hate Faulkner I was impressed at the lengths he was willing to go to for revenge.
Once again the reader is treated to a book that is fast paced and full of action yet still manages to show some lighter sides when we are invited into the family life of William Warwick. There are some fascinating details about both the history of the Tower of London and previous attempts to steal the crown jewels that are brilliantly woven into the story but do not distract the reader.
There is no doubt that Jeffrey Archer knows how to tell the perfect story or that he uses his knowledge of his time in politics to engage the reader and give them a sense of realism. With characters that are by no means perfect but are believable this is a series that I will certainly continue to follow
I was surprised to realise that I hadn't read any Jeffrey Archer before picking up this book, and for some reason I was expecting a serious crime drama. But for me this turned out to be an almost farcical heist story about art and the Crown Jewels. There is also a fair bit of historic information about London, which I am sure will appeal to a lot of readers. 'Traitors Gate' was not what I was expecting but it was a fun romp and I had a pretty good time reading it.
Jeffrey Archer definitely does it again!
I loved this book. Picking up on the background story of William Warwick and his family and Ross Hogan and their constant battle with the antics of Miles Faulkner.
The storyline was amazing the planning and plotting that went into Faulkner's latest heist were remarkable. the counteracting of all his moves were just so cleverly worked out. One of those books you cannot out down and one of those books you do not want to end.
Can't wait for the next book to come along in 2024....
Thank you to Harper Collins UK, Netgalley and Jeffrey Archr for an ARC in return for an honest review.
William Warwick is back but so is Miles Faulkner!
Miles has an audacious plot to carry out the crime of the century but can Warwick out think him.
This is a fast paced book, full of detail which keeps you turning to the last page!
Chief Superintendent William Warwick and his team are still working in the protection of the royal family. But this time there is a plot my their nemesis to steal the Royal Crown before the Queen’s speech to parliament.
William and Beth’s children, Artimesia and Peter, along with Ross’s daughter Jojo are investigating the attempted theft of the Crown Jewels in the 1600’s by Colonel Blood.
Wow, what a rollercoaster read. It felt a little slow to start, but once I was into the book, I couldn’t put it down - fast paced and thrilling.
I loved it.
An utterly unbelievable plot is hatched by Miles Falkner to take revenge on William Warwick.. It's a plot that involves stealing The Crown Jewels and discredit Warwick. Jeffrey. Archer is a great story teller and this book doesn't disappoint. It is thoroughly entertaining and well thought out.
Another brilliant book from Jefferey Archer. Although this is part of a series it can be read as a stand alone book. Always guaranteed a good read this man has been churning out winners for years. Loved it. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
