Traitors Gate By Jeffrey Archer
Book 6 in The Detective William Warwick Series and it’s another cracking read. The title refers to the entrance to the Tower of London through which traitors were sent for execution and this latest book features the Tower and the Crown Jewels. Set in 1997 when Tony Blair’s Labour Party won the general election and set largely in London this is a great story. For 4 years Chief Superindendent Warwick and his friend and colleague Inspector Ross Horgan have been responsible for transporting the jewels used during the Queens Speech in parliament.
Briefly, Miles Faulkner has been released from prison and he is determined to wreak revenge on the three men who put him there. He has come up with a plot to steal the jewels and discredit Warwick, Horgan and Commander Hawksley. With inside help Faulkner starts to plan the perfect heist. It’s 400 years since Colonel Blood attempted this theft, will Faulkner be more successful?
Although this follows on from previous books it will read as a stand-alone. The detail of police procedures and royal protocol are excellent and have clearly been well researched. Archer is a master storyteller and this was a real page turner, with a number of other threads running alongside the Heist, all of which wrap up seamlessly. A typical Archer read, fast paced with numerous red herrings, fun plots and highly enjoyable.
Traitors Gate is the first Jeffrey Archer novel I have read for many years It did not disappoint. Fast moving and gripping, a good accompaniment to my holiday.
A smooth operating criminal, Mr Big, is determined to bring down 3 senior police officers who have, over the years, blighted his life. For this he plans to 'borrow' the Crown Jewels thereby not only creating a world wide audience whilst more than embarrassing the officers because of their (Royal) security responsibilities.
We travel though his meticulous preparations calling on a wide range of villains and some seemingly respectable citizens to facilitate the heist. He, of course, plays no part in this, establishing alibis to show he could not possibly have been involved..
Detail and factual accuracy is always a feature of Jeffrey Archer's work. It adds to the realism in the book. But could the plan possibly succeed? I5 is worth reading the book to find out. Oh and if you are engaged in security matters it might be worth checking your systems!
RECOMMENDED
Great to be reunited with William Warwick and Ross Hogan, again doing battle with their arch nemesis, Miles Faulkner, recently released from prison. He is out for revenge and seems to have come up with the perfect plan.
.Jeffrey Archer has a good knowledge of royal protocol and explains events well. A great read. !
It has been a little while since I read a Jeffrey Archer book but you can instantly tell his style and this one is another easy read and a good page turner. He always paints the picture of a typical villain in the book who you love to hate, or despise. And there is always a good hearted hero who you want to do well and succeed. This book has both.
Even though you can imagine some of the well to do folk (private school and loaded) when you read this, you also get the other side of the police force and people who work hard to earn a living.
The theft of the crown jewels is something you couldn’t imagine ever happening, but Archer allows you an insight into royal security and Tower of London procedures when the Queen was alive. So it really does get you thinking.
Another easy read. Loved the characters in this book and would recommend it!
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins UK for this eCopy to review
Jeffrey Archer has done it again, what a masterpiece of a book. The characters are perfectly described along with the settings, the plot is expertly paced and has a few surprises. I loved how the children were involved in the story and you are kept guessing right to the very end. Nail-biting stuff!
Can they retrieve the true painting for the Fitzmolean and give Faulkner the copy? Will they recover the Crown Jewels? Who will come out on top Warwick or Faulkner?
I couldn't read it fast enough, a superb read
Traitor’s Gate Jeffrey Archer
5 stars
This book follows on from Next in Line as the main characters are still Chief Superintendent William Warwick and Inspector Ross Hogan and their main protagonist Miles Faulkner.
I really enjoyed this book, this time Miles Faulkner, just released from prison, is determined to gain his revenge on Warwick, Hogan and Commander Hawksley. He wants a crime to be committed which will force the three of them to resign and comes up with an amazing plan to steal the Crown Jewels.
Jeffrey Archer obviously has a lot of insight into the Royal Family and the execution and recovery of the crown is brilliantly executed and explained. Although I find it quite difficult to believe that The Queen gave her speech on the election of Tony Blair wearing a counterfeit crown, the way Jeffrey Archer writes this story you could almost believe that it really happened.
I whizzed through this book desperate to find out how everything ended. Long may William Warwick continue his battle against Miles Faulkner!

A welcome return of William Warwick, his friends and his foes.
Once again it’s a cleverly written book that is also extremely easy to read. I flew through it, desperate to read the story, but then disappointed because I’d finished it. A brilliant next instalment.
Absolutely superb read. The master storyteller at his best. Number 6 in the William Warwick series.
A brilliantly crafted rollercoaster of a ride that will leave you breathless.
Archer perfectly recreates 1997, the year that Tony Blair led the Labour Party to power. Meanwhile a dastardly plot unfolds to steal the Crown Jewels and William Warwick, now Superintendent Warwick and the team, again up against his old foe Miles Faulkner have just 24 hours to save the day.
Archer does it again! Another well plotted novel with the two arch rivals William Warwick and Miles Faulkner one plotting the others downfall, the other working out the devious workings of the others mind.
This time Miles is out for revenge against not only Warwick, but the whole Royal Protection Team. His goal, to steal the Crown Jewels and show that the team is incompetent..
I did find that the background research was impressive but maybe Archer tried to fit too much of.it into the story at times. I loved the way he racked up the tension towards the end and the ingenious twists were pure magic.
It would be great to see this series of books on television as the lack of violence is a pleasant change.
Having read Next In Line last year I made it one of my favourite books to read in 2022. Therefore I was really pleased to get to read Traitor's Gate, book 6 in the William Warwick series.
Usually you can guarantee that anything written by Mr Archer is going to be a good read but, for me, it was not the case with this book. Although the story was interesting I felt the writing was very wordy and over-detailed on some points. I can understand that some of that was needed but felt it was overdone. However, I do think this would make aa great film.
Due to the details that needed to be explained I found the book quite hard going at times and that has affected my review score, although I am sure there will be many readers of Mr Archer that will enjoy it.
The book will be released in e-book, audio and hardcover formats on 26th September.
Many thanks to HarperCollins, NetGalley and the author, for providing me with a free advanced copy in electronic format, in return for an honest and unbiased review.
The Tower of London, Scotland Yard and a heist. What better way to start such a thrilling read. And with only 24 hours to stop the crime of the century. Wow! I had to read this and oh what a ride it was.
I have not read many books by Jeffrey Archer and I now wonder why. This is a book that turns the pages itself, it is a whirlwind of a read and a book you just can't put down. Although this is apparently part of a series I found I had no problem reading it as is. Loved William Warwick but I must say I need to go back and maybe read some earlier books to get a clearer picture of him. The characters are great, the heist is fascinating and the story is enthralling to say the least.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, HarperFiction for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Such a brilliant series. This book places William Warwick and his team undercover with the Royal Protection Department. They have infiltrated the department to uncover corrupt members of the protection team, starting with the officer in charge. They are based at the Tower of London where, of course, the Crown jewels are kept.
A familiar adversary hopes to ruin William and his superior's reputation both publicly and within the police force.
An absolute page turner which I read in two days. I can highly recommend this instalment in the series.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for an early ARC in exchange for my unbiased review
Jeffery Archer has done it again. Another page-turner which you cannot put down, until the very last word. Could the crime happen? Maybe, but very unlikely, and if it did, this is how it would be solved!! I don't want to say anything to spoil the plot except, 'Read it'.
With many thanks to HarperCollins and NetGalley for an ARC.
This was a book of 2 halves for me. I enjoyed reading the first bit, the middle bit was very slow, I had to make myself read on and the end was very exciting and good again.
I had only read one previous book of this serious, which I enjoyed from start to finish.
I have been reading the series in order and have been enjoying the stories of William and his family and colleagues
I am starting to find the books a little more difficult to relate to now unfortunately. There are many parts where this is obvious but may be due to my not being anywhere in the vicinity of the upper classes to which the author clearly belongs. It may just be my limited experience but I have never met 10 and 8 year old children with the wide range of vocabulary and interest in a specific essay subject as the three in this book. I also find it difficult to comprehend William's climbing of the ranks while remaining in the same team with the same boss. Does that happen?
Also are there only 2 barristers or is it just coincidence that it is always Sir Julian and BW on opposite sides? Do witnesses know the opposing council by name and would they address them as Sir Julian?
Although I have enjoyed the series so far and very much liked the previous saga I feel this is starting to follow a dated formula so may well be the last for me unfortunately. That said I did finish the book and there were some interesting twists.
This is another fabulous instalment in the William Warwick series, and it is every bit as fast-paced and thrilling as the rest.
The subject this time is the Crown Jewels, and the surveillance which goes into moving them through London for the annual State Opening of Parliament. It is once again incredibly well-researched and detailed, and the character development as well as the frustrations caused by a familiar adversary are gripping. My all-time favourite author!
With thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins for a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
This is book 6 in the William Warwick series and is another good read by the author. A fast paced political thriller with the complex plot being centred around the theft of The Crown Jewels and the Elite protection squad. Archer is a master storyteller and I am sure this will be another popular read by his fans. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper Collins UK for letting me read this novel in exchange for an honest review! I'll admit I struggled a little to get into this book at the start. However, I'll also have to disclose that this is the first novel about William Warwick that I've read, and perhaps I would've struggled less, both to get into the story and with remembering who's who, if I had read the other novels! I enjoyed the changing perspectives, and knowing more than the characters involved. In the most dramatic scenes where lots of things were happening at once, it felt like I was reading a movie, jumping between scenes at a fast pace, which was thoroughly entertaining and during those parts, I could barely put the book down! Therefore, I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5, and I'm happy to say it's made me want to read the other William Warwick novels!
I hadn’t read any Jeffrey archer for years but this was very enjoyable. I liked William Warwick and Ross hogan and the supporting characters very much and the plot was very good. Thank you to the publishers for letting me read the ARC copy.
I always really enjoy reading Jeffrey Archer. This is the 6th in a series I haven’t read all of the series but I enjoyed the book and could still follow it.
A great read once again
