When Teddy loses an eye during playtime, Akiko goes on a midnight odyssey in her garden to find the missing button. This beautifully illustrated book is a simple story imbued with magic and wonderful characters.
Amazing writing! However, the digital copy I got didn’t have any illustrations which I feel would carry a bigger part of the reading experience.
Thank you, Pushkin Press, for the advance reading copy.
The effort it took to actually view this book left me with a bad taste in my mouth. The book is sweet and imaginative, the art is gorgeous. I really enjoyed it and so did my son. Just wish the digital galley was easier to access and read.
I rather enjoyed the illustrations of this book. My daughter didn’t as much as I did (since it was just black and white with pops of red. She prefers full color illustrations. However, I thought the drawings were pretty.
My daughter found the story not very entertaining. She got easily distracted away from this book. I thought it was cute. A little girl and her teddy searching for it’s lost eye (button).
I did find that the story had an odd ending. It didn’t show them putting the eye back on or anything, just that Teddy was fixed the next morning. Sadly, we won’t be grabbing for this one again, per my daughters request.
Thank you Netgalley for providing us this arc!
I requested this book for my daughter and she absolutely enjoyed reading this one. A gorgeously illustrated, enchanting story from Japan. A little girl explores her garden with her teddy bear by the light of the moon…
I think children will really like the night adventure that they go on to search for Teddy's eye.
The illustrations are lovely and I loved the pops of color.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!
I was attracted to the beautiful black and white drawing with the contrast of red on the cover of this book so I had to read it. Very sweet book about childhood imagination and helping a friend. Loved the illustrations. I’d buy this fir a child in my life.
Simple story for a young child. Words are easy enough and the concept is easy to grasp as well. Would recommend.
Might be a fun adventure story for kids but personally I thought it was a bit pointless. The art style is pretty but I'm curious about the splash of red as opposed to using full-colour. Also, the text could stand out more. Meh.
Akiko and her Teddy had quite the midnight romp, looking for Teddy's lost eye, guided by the brightness of the moon. Earlier in the day, Teddy lost his eye in the garden. A search in the tall grass came up empty.
Akiko's bedtime wish was to be small. It was amazing! She was now "Teddy-sized" and could investigate under the tall grass, search next to the bicycle tires and chat with the bell crickets, all to no avail. Where was the lost eye?
The intricate, 3D-like grayscale illustrations made reading this picture book a delight. Splashes of red were present in Akiko's dress and pajamas. The color red was instrumental in highlighting an eventual discovery.
"Teddy's Midnight Adventure" by Yoko Mori, an offering from Japan, was an exploration by two friends determined to find a lost eye. It was pure magic! I can envision this book being read by the young and young at heart and especially by young school-age children sharing its beauty with preschoolers. Highly recommended.
Thank you Pushkin Children's Books and Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a super cute book. I loved the art. So so cute. I bet it will be stunning in person..This would be a great addition to any library shelf.
Thank you so much to Pushkin Press and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
Akiko notices Teddy lost his eye in the garden and wishes she was his height so she could find it for him. Then at night she wakes to find her wish came true and together they go out on an adventure to find Teddy’s missing eye.
This was so adorable she felt so sad when she couldn’t find his eye but together they searched high and low until they found it. I loved that it showed a really strong dedication and friendship to each other, a girl and her teddy bear, so precious.
The illustrations are so stunning, being hand drawn greyscale illustrations with hints of red on her Pyjamas, they were so beautiful to look at. This is a really cute and simple picture book but has such a sweet and fun adventure, meeting lots of characters around the garden. I really enjoyed reading it, so if you are looking for a cute adventure picture book I do suggest this one, it’s got a magic to it.
I loved this book and the illustrations. The black and white with just a bit of red color scheme made it feel surreal and magical at the same time.
I felt like the ending was a bit ubrupt going from the dream like state to being awake and it didn't quite capture the feeling of suddenly waking up to me but I almost felt that way.
I am excited to add this to our collection of bedtime books!

Great for readers of all ages in bringing back the joy and excitement kids create and experience in the simplest of tasks.

I just thought the cover of this book was so adorable that I had to request it!
It's a sweet story about a little girl who explores her garden at night with her teddy bear in search of his lost button eye. The illustrations were beautifully done and the short story is perfect for kids and will keep their interest in my opinion.
The story is about a little girl looking for the missing eye of her teddy bear. The ending is both heartwarming and magical. It reminds me of some Japanese anime where the ending shows a blurring between the magical and the real world. The illustration is very beautiful and the translation is done very well.
Not only is this story well illustrated, but it is imaginative and informational. Very enjoyable journey.
