Some graphic novels just make you go "aww!" and melt. Quinnelope's first adventure is one of them, where a queen is craving cookies and decides to order them from the Cookie King. Just as she places her order, however, someone kidnaps the Cookie King before he can start baking. Cake won't suffice, and the farmer with the main ingredients can't help. Quinnelope is not a queen who waits for things to happen; she packs for a quest with her butler Bub comes along, ready to do battle.
I enjoyed this story a lot and it helps while I was not feeling well. Quinnelope is more determined, smarter, and sharper than one may think initially. The art makes the adventure zip through, whether one is traversing a bus driven by wildlife, or a cookie dough mountain covering everyone in edible mud.
This is a weird and chaotic book. Lots of random nonsense with a veneer of plot. If done correctly that can work well. Here it's sort of middling. Amusing. Entertaining but lacking in depth.
A fun, lighthearted adventure that will bring a smile to your face!
One day, Quinnelope awakes to learn all the cookies in her kingdom have gone missing! Quinnelope cannot live without her cookies, so alongside her butler, Bub, and companion, Star, the three set out on a mission to find the Cookie King. But the adventure isn’t an easy one. It’s long, it’s hard and filled with battles along the way.
This volume reads similar to a cartoon show. It’s playful, expressive and keeps moving forward. There aren’t many specifics or character growth, but there is a mission and three friends who are helping each other. Quinnelope is our main character, so she is at the forefront for most of the events and mysteries; however Bub and Star do get their spotlights. The dialogue is at times witty and comedic, yet short and sweet.
There were times I found Quinnelope’s personality came across as selfish and uncaring. I felt she was treating her friends, Bub & Star quite inconsiderately at times, as well as through her word choice. I wish Quinnelope had some character development and learned to treat her friends nicer because it would make the adventure much more loveable.
The art seems simplistic and childish at first, but eventually grows on the reader as they continue reading. The illustrations are colorful, bright and sometimes exaggerated to match the tone in the story. The typeset changes multiple times ranging in font, size, color and placement. I liked how the typeset reflected the emotions of the character because it added to the overall feel and atmosphere of the scene and characters.
Overall, this was a fun read and I would recommend it for slightly mature child readers who are interested in getting into graphic novels. The artwork is unique and the mystery adventure is simple yet interesting. There is also a nice lesson at the end of this volume which is a great reminder to anyone!
Thank you Oni Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
This was a cute story that made me giggle. I like how the ending had a lesson about learning to work together with out being too in your face. Now I really want some cookies and cake.
I received a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I feel as though Quinnelope is a 40-year-old woman with a strong craving. I swear I was going through the same emotions looking for an open bakery that makes good cupcakes that are open on Mondays yesterday.
This is a fun comic that kids will love. It's funny, silly and has a snot covered cookie king withing the first 25 pages!
Highly recommend!
Quinnelope loves cookies but now the cookie king has gone missing she won’t be able to have any… So she goes on a food themed adventure with her friends to rescue him.
My 8 year old loved this. She enjoyed the characters, plot and illustrations.
My children loved this book. They are big fans of Dog Man and really enjoyed this similar title. The images were vivid and drew them, in and they were laughing out loud all through the book.
My class love graphic novels and I am always looking out for something new to tempt them.
They loved hearing the blurb for this one and are excited to read it for themselves as they were horrified by the prospect of all the cookies going missing!
I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book is the perfect treats for readers that loves mystery, humour and scrumptious cookie-filled goodness.
Queen Quinnelope, Bub and Star forms a delightful trio with their dynamic personalities and humourous interactions. Kids will find themselves giggling and rooting for this team as they venture through Pleasant Towne in search of the missing cookies.
This was such a cute book, I loved quinnelope and her little blobby self. The story was a good pace- a little repetitive or slow at times but generally good for the reading age and would keep younger ones engaged. the art is cute, the style simple but adorable.
The writing is simplistic enough with lots of jokes and funnier sections and I really liked the 'how-to-draw' section at the end, very cute.
(The dyslexia-friendly font was a plus too)
Thanks Netgalley, The publisher, and HF Brownfield for the arc.
My 7 year-old, who currently enjoys reading Tom Gates, Cat Kid Comic Club and Dog Man loves this book and is already asking for volume 2. My daughter says, ‘ It is great and I like the idea for coo cakes! I also I like the characters and this book is one to make you laugh. The drawings are colourful and funny. I can’t wait for the next book, I will definitely read it!’
This book was definitely a cute adventure with Quinnelope and her friends. It felt a little bit stretched so I deducted a star just because it made the story drag a bit at times but not enough that the entire book was ruined.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this was cute… and one can never get enough of cake and cookies! An adventure of cookies and quests across the world to save cookies and the world as she knows it! Gorgeous illustration style and I look forward to more!
An absolutely bonkers rainbow coloured adventure starring Patrick Star’s long lost sister who has become royalty! Perfect for fans of Adventure Time-actually any animation where the rules of physics don’t exist and the characters are all varying levels of insane! It was a really fun read and zipped along despite the relatively high page count. Thought the how to draw sections at the end were great too!
Full of cuteness and sweets, Quinnelope and the Cookie King Catastrophe Vol. 1 was a fun and quick read that my littles enjoyed from the beginning to end! The story follows Quinnelope as she embarks on a sugary quest to find out what has happened to all the delicious cookies (her favorite food!) and learns the Cookie King has disappeared. In order to satisfy her sweet-tooth, she is joined by her friends as they they follow clues, travel to new places, and make new friends on a super sweet adventure!
This was such a cute and fun book! Just to name one, the cookie pox was the most laughter-inducing chapter!
Although the drawings and art style might seem a little bit simplistic at first glance, they grow on you as you keep reading the book. There are many fun little details in the drawings also, those add some extra (cookie or cake!) layer to the story.
Overall, the stories are cute and adorable. The way the stories are told and combined with the drawings make it an addictive read and make you want to read more of this.
I can see this book becoming one of the big players in the field of graphic novels – I can see this as one the books that are appealing to many age groups and those of various reading levels.
Quinnelope and the Cookie King Catastrophe is another in the supremely silly graphic novels that have been super popular with my elementary readers lately.
Quinnelope cooks up some sweet silliness but doesn't bring much newness to the table - kids will love the humor and the bright, wide-eyed and silly characters (reminiscent of UniKitty in the LEGO universe both in appearance and style), but won't find too much depth in this silly, sugary tale.
However, though, that's not why kids go crazy for these books - as an adult reader, you might wonder what the big deal is, but your elementary age readers will gobble this up and ask for more!
I kept thinking of Dogman or Captain Underpants when I read this. It is a super cute comics book with enough yucky stuff to keep children laughing non-stop.
This middle grade graphic novel about a cookie mystery was absolutely adorable! I read it with my daughter, and we both started searching the kitchen for cookies immediately afterward. The steering wheel is a pizza! The CIA is the Cake Intelligence Agency! Veggies are a treat! It is an absurd and fun romp that got us both laughing out loud. Can't wait to read more of the series. Thank you so much to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read early!
4 Stars
This was very wholesome and cute! I read this book with my 7 year old son and he found the story being about cookies to be really funny. I wasn't quite sure if he would like this book, as it is different than other graphic novels we had read, but it did a great job keeping his attention. It was simple enough that he could read most of it himself. At times, though the story was a little slow or repetitive, however it didnt take away too much from our enjoyment.
The Illustrations in this book are fantastic. Their bright and just over all really funny. I loved the derpy looking characters and it added just a overall level of fun to the book.
I would recommend this book to early readers and kids just starting to get into graphic novels. This is a fun one and look forward to see where it goes in the future.
