the art is so gorgeous..the color scheme is evokes a nostalgiac feel. note that this book is part of a trilogy and is the final installment. (The story also is very emotional :()
**ARC from NetGalley**
amazing finale to an amazing story about how delicate friendships can be. Also interestingly dark at times, with talks of murder and death. The graphics as always were breathtaking and roped you into a fantastical world.
Being the end of the. series, I cannot wait to see what else Thummler has in store.
5 out of 5, highly recommendable read.
Marjorie's final paranormal story. A sweet ending to the series that looks at friendship, imagination and, most importantly, ghosts.
Following Marjorie and her friends, this final installment to the much acclaimed series focuses on discovering what happened to Wendell. The art accompanying the story is as delightful as ever, with vibrant and soothing color palettes giving context to the story and providing a comforting backdrop.
Lights tells us about the value of friendship, belonging, and growing up, all while providing a satisfying mystery and a conclusion to the trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed the reading experience and will read anything Brenna Thummler publishes in the future.
Similar to the previous two installments, Lights is perfect for upper middle-grade and YA audiences.
The third in the series that started with Sheets, and sadly, the last of the series. It was a pretty concrete ending for a graphic novel with ghosts.
I love this series for the paranormal presences that the novel normalizes. I mean, where else would ghosts hide in plain sight other than with sheets at laundry mat? Brilliant idea! And who else to befriend than a paranormal expert and tracker.... perfect to protect the cover of real ghosts. Wendell is a genius.
In this novel. Marjorie has a birthday celebration that turns a little awkward for a little bit, but ultimately works out. Wendell gets some closure (prepare yourselves, his story is sad). And Eliza comes face to face with her former bullies. There's a lot going on.
I love the muted purple colors for this novel. I love the character development. And I love the ending (even though I wish it didn't have to end!)
Great middle school graphic novel which deals with grief, bullying and loneliness.
I really love this author as I read the previous two books in the series, so I was super excited to read this and it’s been waiting to be reviewed for awhile, but I would like to say this book is a great continuation of the series. I was a little upset about the ending because it was heartbreaking, but it needed to happen and I are still adore. The characters are the adore everything and everyone and I just think that the authors made a really good manga and it just hits different. I would 100% recommend this if you even think that you are interested just go ahead and read it you’ll love it no matter what
I am so grateful to have received an ARC of the final book in the Sheets trilogy. Brenna Thummler continues to impress me with their beautiful and immersive illustrations and thoughtful stories that explore themes of death, mental health, and friendships with such tenderness. There was a large focus on Wendell's life through flashbacks which wasn't my favourite storyline in this series, but I still thought it was a good conclusion to the trilogy. This trilogy would be a great introduction for readers new to graphic novels, as well as a touching read for YA audiences and older.
Lights by Brenna Thummler is the perfect conclusion to the ‘sheets’ trilogy. Beautifully written with so much heart I adored all three books. The illustrations and layout style are fantastic and the colour palette (especially in this third book) are just beautiful. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know these characters and watching them grow and overcome adversity in a realistic and heartfelt way. I would highly recommend this series which deals with complex issues with such care and warmth. While I’m sad that this series is finished I’m looking forward to reading more from this talented author.
Thanks to Oni Press and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this wonderful book.
Publication Date- 5 September 2023
I absolutely adored this story. It's filled with beautiful illustrations and the storyline is rich with emotion, touching on friendships, grief and family relationships. The way Thummler weave the story and drive the plot leading up to that final reveal about Wendell's past was beautifully executed. That ending made me emotional and tear up a bit. Lights is the third and final installment of the series. I haven't read the first two books but am able to follow the storyline okay. After this, I'd like to check out the earlier books in the series to learn more about the beginnings.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
Having read the other two in this three graphic novel collections already I knew it was a good idea to read this one as soon as it was released on netgalley so thanks to them and the publisher for a copy in return for my honest review.
The characters - our main character is working through the death of her mother and trying to have a friendship group that she can rely on but she is battling so much in between. Her dad is trying to be there for her and her brother but she is unsure how to navigate having friends who dont like each other. One set are called the bullies and one friend is the odd one out.
Queue wendell and in this story there is also the story of finding out how he died.
The illustrations are beautifu, the stories in here are a coming of age girl who is trying to just live her life without her mum and also navigating growing up and being a teenager. Its a wonderful book and a fantastic third book in this series. Would heavily recommend.
5 stars
Lights is the 3rd and final book in the Sheets series, which follows Marjorie Glatt and the ghosts that live in her family laundromat. Her best friend is lonely ghost Wendell and together, they befriend ghost hunting enthusiast Eliza in Delicates. This book shines a spotlight on Wendell's past, who died tragically young in a drowning accident. Marjorie and Eliza help Wendell uncover his past, all while the girls navigate the awkwardness of being young teens.
The series is very heartfelt, I liked that each of the main characters had a book that focuses in them but still includes issues that the other characters are having. Marjorie and Eliza are very opposite and they have to deal with Marjorie befriends some friends who used to bully Eliza. Eliza learns about compromise, how much is acceptable and talking to your friends about issues. Marjorie has to balance her friendships, which includes spending time with Wendell. I liked seeing Marjorie and Eliza's friendship grow.
Wendell's story is the storyline moving the plot along and while I was interested in finding out more, I was still just as happy in the quieter moments of the book. I like the art style, but what blows me away is the colour work, the palette is so beautiful!
A bittersweet, beautiful conclusion to the series, if you liked the first two books, then definitely pick this one up!
This was an amazing last installment of this trilogy, as well as the most heartbreaking. Where the first two novels were solid enough, I found this one really gave that extra jab of emotions. For this installment alone I can highly recommend everyone reading the whole series!
Thanks to Netgalley and Brenna Thummler for letting me read this beautiful story.
This graphic novel is a wonderful way of portraying the complicity of friendship — be it between friends, former friends becoming friends again and being friends with a ghost.
I absolutely love the colour scheme as well and the artstyle!
Definitely would love to read more by Brenna.
Lights is the final instalment of the Sheets trilogy. I adored Sheets and Delicates and was excited to see how Thummler concluded this graphic novel series.
Lights focused on Wendall’s human life and Marjorie and Eliza must work together even when their friendship is being tested, to help Wendall find out what happened to him.
There were a number of very emotional scenes in this story; some profound statements about death and coping with loss which really resonated with me. I love each of the main characters, their personal journeys and struggles and I think Brenna gave them the perfect send off. This is a story of friendship, the fear of change, grief and perseverance. The messages contained within this beautifully illuminated story will make an impact on the reader.
Thanks to NetGalley and Oni Press for the arc. Lights will be published on the 5th September.
I really liked this one! I had read the other two graphic novels in this trilogy, so I was very excited when I had the opportunity to read and review this one!
I think this was a great ending to the trilogy. There was a bit of mystery, a bit of friendship dynamic conflict, and it all tied together nicely.
I would highly recommend this series to people!!
My new favorite from this adorable middle-grade graphic novel. This series just gets better and better each time and I hope this isn't the last of this crew.
Great conclusion to the Sheets trilogy. While I found book 2 better, this one gives a lot of insight into Wendell's history.
This did not disappoint. I love this series, these characters and the way I feel
While reading this graphic novel series is incredible.
I have been very impatiently waiting for the conclusion to this series and this was a lot more emotional than I had anticipated. It was heartbreaking to follow along to discover how Wendall died and I’m glad we got this in the last book. The art is stunning as usual and adds to the cozy feeling of the holidays. Themes of friendship and Marjorie exploring her relationships was very cathartic having struggled with similar issues.
This is an incredible series with some amazing messages woven throughout. Lights is a perfect end to the series and it made me feel so many things. I love the characters, especially Wendell, and seeing their story’s develop in this instalment was wonderful. As always the illustrations and colour choices are beautiful and I really want to read more from Brenna Thummler in the future! I can’t wait for this to finally be published so I can get a copy and finish my collection!
