I got the opportunity to listen to this audiobook narrated by Stephanie Cannon.
I thought she did a good job with the narration and the book was easy to listen to as she read.
Rylan Flynn has a gift that allows her to see and speak with spirits. She uses her gift to “ghost hunt” and solve mysteries.
When bodies are found in the woods near her Aunts cabin, Ryland works with the spirits to figure out what happened to them. Can Ryland and Detective Pierce work together to solve these crimes?
This is the first book in this young adult, paranormal series. There is a bit of romance and is a quick read as you delve into the mystery.
Thank you to author, Dawn Merriman, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to this book. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
I read the spirit girls via audiobook and if you were into ghost whisperer the tv show you are going to love this. We follow Ryland who lives with her mom (or does she) as she can speak to the spirits that have not crossed over yet she also runs a YouTube channel beyond the dead, but when dead bodies start showing up in her aunt Val’s woods things turn upside down. Everything points to aunt Val. With Val in custody Ryland try’s to uncover what is going on with these murders or are they murders?
This story was so interesting and I was invested from the first chapter. Like I said it reminds me so much of ghost whisperer. It left us on a cliff hanger tho! I need the next book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the author Dawn Merriman for this audiobook for exchange for review
The Spirit Girls perfectly blended fantasy and mystery in this wild ride of a book. This follows a girl who sees ghosts, and is led to solve murders that are happening in her city. When women are found murdered on her Aunt’s property, can she solve the crimes before more victims show up? Will she be next?
This was brilliantly done! As a reader who is not a fan of mystery, I found this book hard to put down. The Narrator had excellent pace and anxiety was felt through my headphones. I loved the trail of clues that Rylan had to follow, and her determination to reach the end.
While the female voices were easy to distinguish, I did find that the male voices from the narrator got a bit lost, and sometimes I forgot who was talking.
My one (personal) grievance with this book was the use of Wicca throughout the book. It is used and seen in a very bad light, and goes against Wiccan practices. I was hoping the author would rectify this, but it wasn’t.
The blend of fantasy and mystery made for a unique book, in my opinion. I found similarities to Ghost Whisperer and old school police dramas. To me, this worked very well. It could easily have been taken too far, but the fantasy elements were paired back enough to create a realistic atmosphere within the pages.
Despite the Wiccan plotline, I thoroughly enjoyed myself with this book. I would recommend this to anyone that wants a fun, easy to read mystery, with paranormal elements.
Thank you to Netgalley and Second Sky for the Advanced Listener’s Copy (ALC) of this book. All opinions are my own.
I initially found the narrator of this book felt a little old for the FMC. After I got past this and focused on the story I really started to enjoy myself. I loved trying to piece the mystery together as the book went on and seeing if I could figure who the killer was without being told. A little logic gave me the who, but I didn’t get the why. And then yelling at Rylan and Ford who can’t seem to be honest with themselves or each other.
I don't know what I was expecting going into this, but this was better! Such fun characters, really interesting story, loved the pacing and the mystery. Really excited that this is a series so we get to explore more with these character!
Thank you so much for the arc!
I really enjoyed the audio for this book, it was incredibly compelling and the narrator did an excellent job at the different perspectives included. I am definitely looking forward to further Rylan Flynn mysteries.
I obtained this audiobook, The Spirit Girls’ by Dawn Merriman, via a free promotion that I saw on Twitter. It is the first book in series featuring psychic Rylan Flynn who can see and communicate with ghosts. I would definitely categorize it in the YA genre, as it is written in the first person and the dialogue and character development is very young. The narration by Stephanie Cannon was superb!
Murder mystery meets the supernatural in this fast- paced ghost tale, where Rylan Flynn takes the lead. She can see and talk to ghosts, she hosts a podcast about her supernatural experiences and she also helps them pass to the next realm. One night, a girl leads her to the scene of her own murder and she joins forces with the (handsome) detective to help solve the mystery.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. It had the right mix of fantasy with a dash of horror, and the murder mystery was full of suspense. The Flynn family and Ford are so fun to hear about, and this series seems to be off to a fantastic start (I’ll be keen to look out for the next part)!
Stephanie Cannon does it again with another fantastic narration and switching between perspectives, clearly distinguishing the characters (which helps, as there were many).
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Well narrated audiobook.
The author has kept the reader interested throughout. There is a good level of suspense although I felt the suspense was revealed in a slight haste compared to the pace of the beginning of the story,
I am intrigued to know more about the other spirits that Rylyn has encountered and do wish to know more about them. I feel they should have an even interesting story to tell.
Rylan Flynn can see ghosts. She solves mysteries that are binding ghosts/spirits to this earthly plane. When Rylan wants to get away from it all she escapes the solitude of the woods surrounding her aunt’s cabin. The spirit of Celeste Monroes approaches Rylan; she leads her to her body before disappearing. The young woman had been murdered. Rylan offers to assist the police in their investigation, but Detective Ford Pierce refuses her offer. She must walk a fine line, any information she shares could make her a suspect. After another body is found the evidence points to Rylan’s family.
The Spirit Girls is a genre duo: mystery and romance. This is the first book in a new series. The premise of this book has potential, but it falls short of my expectations. The storyline, central character and script are immature. In my opinion the author started writing and used whatever got her to the finish line without research. Books must be researched. Readers are an intelligent group, and they will pick up on mistakes. I could not connect with Rylan she was immature and not realistic. The language used by the main character proves this book was written for YA. The narrator did a nice job, kudos to Stephnie Cannon. I realize I sound very negative in this review. I would like to clarify this book has potential but needs a lot of work. Young Adults might enjoy it for the light paranormal plot.
I have struggled with the rating of this book. It isn’t a 3-star tale. I think there is enough potential to give it 2 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.
This book was captivating and fun to read. However, I would put this in the YA category myself simply because of how it’s written. I also had trouble connecting with/ understanding Rylan. Given all that she’s been through I would expect a little more depth to her character but I personally didn’t get that from her.
YA isn’t exactly my cup of tea but that didn’t change anything for me, it was an easy book to listen to.
I don’t think I would read it again nor do I think I’ll read anything else in the series but I can definitely see why this book has so many good reviews!
Thank you Second Sky and NetGalley for this copy. This audiobook was fun to listen to while doing housework. I played it on 1.75 so it would go at the pace that I was moving. I got a lot done. So the story was really good my only complaint would be the religious aspect of the story. I am not a fan of reading or watching that but the story was so good that I was able to over look it.
Rylan Flynn sees ghosts. In this paranormal mystery book, Rylan gets caught up in a Scooby Doo style mystery involving ghosts and some witchy stuff.
Lines similar to “I can’t even imagine the hell she must be living through” liberally pepper this book. If you love the idea of characters who are unable to imagine things, you are all set. I feel like I have read this book before. I further feel like AI could have written it. It is formulaic. The little prayers and nod to Christianity seemed out of place and were not enough to make the story original; “holy flip” is neither a fun catchphrase nor a convincing fake curse for this character. When the cop says, “I’m just doing my job…until we solve this, everyone is a suspect…now stay out of it before I haul you in for obstruction” the reader cannot be surprised. I can easily imagine the AI churning that out. Overall, Dawn Merriman’s book is a fun read nonetheless – it has a very light cozy paranormal energy. I read the whole thing is almost one sitting.
Narrator Stephanie Cannon enunciates beautifully and does an excellent job with the different voices. The audio sounds great, not only on 1x, but also on 1.25x and 1.5x.
Would I read it again? No. Would I read the next book in the series? Yes! I would like to see George the dog again. Hopefully we will get a better feel for the small town of Ashby. I also look forward to more character development. The tease for the next case/book was just right.

If you are a sucker for ghosts and mysteries, like a little romantic interest, and don’t mind a little graphic detail (I’d have called this a cozy but for that), The Spirit Girls fits the bill.
Through multiple points of view we get to know Rylan through her engagement with her family and town—ghosts and all.
The story was entertaining and well organized. I’d have liked a little more development of side characters, who sometimes seemed like little more than props — there when needed and otherwise not. Perhaps more from several of them in their own POVs to help me dig into and feel the different characters as the story progressed to a conclusion. Detective Ford Pierce, the second main POV and Rylan’s crush since they were in school, is the exception. This relationship potential is one reason I might pick up book two. Another is to understand more of Rylan’s relationship with her mother.
3.5 This was fun listen for a rainy afternoon! I love mystery stories with paranormal elements and this one delivered on that. There is a hint of romance, but this definitely leans wholesome. I love that the FMC can communicate with the spirit world and this is how she helps to solve the case.
In terms of the audiobook, I think that Stephanie Cannon did a great job making the voices distinct and performed very well. Her voice is not my fave, though, and she maybe sounded a bit young for the characters (but not egregiously so). Overall, this was enjoyable.
I absolutely loved this book I enjoyed the ghost characters plot of this book I think it was written very well I had feelings for all the characters even the mean ones I would recommend this book
I read this book when it first came out and honestly it wasn't really my thing. There was a bit of a religious subtext that felt out of place. I have no problem with religion in books in the same way I have no problem with explicit sex in books. But it needs to belong and it just felt out of place.
All in all the narration in the audiobook improves the experience. I originally rated the book 3 Stars and I'm inclined to bump it up to 4 Stars just because the narration smooths the experience.
In this great audiobook, narrator Stephanie Cannon brings Dawn Merriman's paranormal thriller to life.
Rylan Flynn, a psychic who can see (and help) spirits, stumbles on the ghost of a murdered girl near her aunt's cabin. While Rylan dives into her own investigation, considerate and handsome Detective Ford Pierce (love that name!) tells her to steer clear of the case. But when a second body pops up and it looks like it's linked to Rylan's family, she's hell-bent on getting to the bottom of it.
This is very much a clean contemporary mystery, Rylan doesn’t even curse once. It is safe for new adult, possibly even mature YA readers. It’s set in Indiana, her dad is a minister, and her unrealised love interest is a police officer, all very wholesome. Overall, it gives me Stephanie Plum series vibes, (but clean!) which I love. Be aware, that there are slightly graphic depictions of injuries leading to death, including suicide.
Stephanie Cannon's voice really captures Rylan Flynn's go-getter attitude and the vibe of the story. The audio narration makes the book's fast-paced, suspenseful plot even better. Cannon's lively delivery keeps you engaged, I listened to it non-stop!
Thank you to Second Sky and NetGalley for providing a review copy of this audiobook.
