ARC provided by NetGalley.
This was such a fun and sweet manga. I loved the story of this hard yakuza man who just happens upon a K-pop group and becomes obsessed with one of the group members. It’s definitely a silly story but I really do love the idea that he enjoys them because they show a different sort of masculinity and honor. It had me laughing out loud and wishing there was more! The scene with the finger guns had me HOWLING. Highly recommend for anyone who needs a light hearted gangster manga after reading/watching banana fish 😋
Thanks Netgalley and Kodansa for giving me this manga to read through.
Man wtf was happening like I didn’t understand half of it. I don’t know if I have humour at all but I did not find anything funny with this manga. I feel the story was just scattered all over the place and just find the characters unlikeable as well as underdeveloped. Listen I don’t understand why it would be a bestseller but Im sure there will be an anime on the horizon to how popular this manga series is. Im afraid I won’t be reading further or even watching the anime if it does come out…..
This is a hilarious take of K-pop or J-pop boy bands, but instead of focusing on the crazy girl fans. From this graphic noval, the crazy obsessed fans are Kunitz mob bosses and some members. What they will do to protect the j pop members they adore. LOL the ending got to me. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the arc copy for this.
**Thank you for the ARC. All opinions are completely my own.**
4 stars. Humorous and made me chuckle. For fans of The Way of the Househusband...or maybe any k-pop fan!
However, one thing I did not like is that the screen tone is off, making it hard to read the font.
Ken's been devoted to his crime family all his life, until the boss' daughter introduces him to a K-pop group that literally changes his world. Now he stans Jun and his whole perspective has changed!
This was a fast paced and absolutely hysterical and sweet manga start. Definitely for fans of Way of the House Husband and any K-pop stans. This book mixes a deep passion for music and idols along with a seriousness of life or death reality.
Laughed a lot and aww'ed that much more. Such a fun read!
Okay, so, I don't consider myself a huge kpop fan. I listen to various songs and like a lot of groups but I never really became a part of them so this was a whole new experience to read about — and I loved it.
This manga was entertaining and wholesome and had just the right amount of comedy and cheesiness. And the dramatics!! I always appreciate characters who are over the top with their every line and being a little too out there – this was the gangsters to a T. Everyone was also so supportive in their own, weird ways, and I know this was supposed to be a gag manga but I honestly just fell in love with these bonkers characters.
MNW was a great representation of kpop groups and I adored we got little pieces of their POVS squeezed into the story. The scenes at the concerts had me losing it but also completely swooning because don't we wish we were them? Aksjlajdd I just loved this. I want more content. I want to see the gangsters interacting with their biases and also converting others with their fangirling. It makes me happy to know there's a volume 2 coming out and I will be getting my hands on that somehow!
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the chance of reading this ARC!
This was such a fun read! "The Yakuza's Bias" was both hilarious and gripping. I finished the volume in one sitting, thoroughly entertained the entire time. It has similar comedic beats and themes as the manga called "The Way of the House Husband" but does it's own unique twist of Yakuza member meets something the exact opposite of his lifestyle by introducing our main character, Ken, to the world of K-pop.
I will definitely be picking up a physical volume when I can to add to my shelf.
Listen, before I finished even half of this manga I was in my discord chat with the friends telling them they need to read this manga. I lost count of the times I laughed out loud!
Ken Kanashiro stumbles in the sort of love he never imagined- the pure love one has for someone they admire completely. To a yakuza man, he's familiar with loyalty to his patriarch, to his clan-- but now, he feels that same sort of loyalty to a K-Pop idol??
At first I wanted this to be BL (MLM) because that's just how I am, but the more I read the more I was so into this middle aged dude's pure adoration for his bias and his full embrace of stan culture.
Although I read this via NetGalley in exchange for my free and honest review (thank you! and thank you to Kodansha for the ARC!) I'm definitely going to be keeping up with this series on my own from here on out.
Yakuza and K-pop fandom was not a mix of plot points I was expecting, but it was fun! The humor worked well, and there was something charming about our older male lead respecting the heck out of the work ethic of the idol group/ just how many fans were in the crime family. If you want something with the same comedic feel as Way of the House Husband, but there's the added K-pop fan element, this might be a good manga for you!
A very silly (compliment) manga about a high-ranking yakuza member becoming a k-pop stan. I don’t know a single thing about k-pop but decided to request this because the cover is gorgeous and it seemed like it would be fun, which it was! If you enjoyed The Way of the Househusband then you’d definitely enjoy this too.
Very "way of the house husband" and I love it! Emotional art, and everyone seems to be a stan so most everyone knows what's happening! If this is made into a show, I'll def watch
Ken Kanashiro is both a feared and respected member of the Washio Clan. After the boss' daughter drags him to a K-Pop concert, his life is forever changed when he sees MNW member Jun. Ken learns everything he can about Jun and begins to live the life of a K-Pop idol fan - which includes chatting with other fans online and trading photo cards of his bias. I love how unique this story by Teki Yatsuda is, especially the contrast between bad-ass enforcer Ken and mushy idol obsessed Ken! I am definitely interested in seeing how it continues to unfold!
Who knew mixing Yakuza and K-pop would be something that would make any sense. An interesting read that mixes the hard and cold world of the Japanese mafia and the sweet and addictive kpop scene where two men couldn't seem more opposite. Was a bit difficult to follow sometimes but was intrigued by the art form.
Thanks Netgalley for the chance to read this book and give my honest opinion.
In this first volume, we have the journey of him becoming a regular stan, such as learning to use Twitter with 100% focus on being a fan - and being a success, because of his killer tone -, there are also some scenes of him buying swag fandom and many other early fandom experiences, and the key to this volume changes when even its haters reach out to the world of K-Pop to understand it all.
In the synopsis they sell it as perfect for fans of Way of the Househusband, Phantom of the Idol, and Spy x Family (I love it), and there is a work that was not mentioned and I think it would also work a lot for fans of it, the anime The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting, because in addition to having a yakuza protagonist, both protagonists end up having a soft spot for “something cute”.
As for the illustration style, I really like the richness in the details of the characters' faces, especially when the idols appear, as it is well in the 1080p image resolution energy when they appear, while the rest is 480p of life. But when it comes time to give a striking style to the clothing of the characters, the whim goes away, because the yakuza people wear a little black suit, a sour face, and sometimes glasses, and for them, it's already great.
This was different but in a good way! It was funny and cute! I liked the idol stan plot line, it made the story more funnier because the main characters are in a clan.
I had a great time reading this. It was fun to chuckle and enjoy this manga. I couldn't stop reading it, has to be the greatest one I've read .
I haven’t giggled like this reading a book in so long! I’m in a bit of a reading slump and chose one of my arcs at random and I’m glad I did. Funny and silly, especially if you’re a K-pop fan. Also, let men be happy and emotional and vulnerable about the things they love! I’m excited to read more.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
this was so unbelievably funny and lighthearted to read! i don’t know what i was expecting when i saw that this was a yakuza boss who suddenly becomes in love with kpop and his bias but i don’t regret reading this! this encapsulates everything about being a kpop fan and having a bias that feels you up with so much giddiness. I LOVED THIS. i can’t wait to read the next volume when it’s released and see where this yakuza boss ends up with his favorite kpop group and bias!
The Yakuza's Bias is a love letter to fandom and especially the power of Kpop fans. This manga follows Ken Kanashiro of the Washio clan and his introduction, induction, and complete subsumation into Kpop fandom culture.
This manga takes the theory that literally anyone could be a Kpop fan and shows just how true that is. It accurately portrays the day-to-day actions and environments of fandom culture whilst comedically tying it to the steroetypes of the Yakuza code of honour. This mangaka uses a gritty artstyle, and scary-looking characters to highlight the extreme differences and the juxtaposition to create the hilarious and comedic situations that come from being a Yakuza Kpop stan!
This is at its core a gag manga, but there is true plot progression and we get to know not only the Yakuza characters but the Kpop boy band that Ken and the rest of his clan follow. The accuracy of fan culture portrayed is almost textbook and would be useful for anyone wanting to know more about Kpop fans.
I thoroughly enjoyed this!

Thank you to Kodansha Comics and Netgalley for providing me with an eARC copy so that I could give an honest review.
A high ranking member of a feared mafia group discovers k-pop, hilarity ensues. Perfect for fans of Way of the House Husband. Featuring the most unusual enemies to friends relationship with two hard boiled men who are supposed to hate each other.
