I loved Legends & Lattes so much that when I found out this book was being released I was so excited for it- When I was approved for an advance copy I was ecstatic!

I was looking forward to being thrown back into this cosy, magical world and learning more about our favourite Orc Viv's backstory. So you can imagine how awful it was to be so disappointed by this book.

It took me so long to read (writing this review almost exactly a year since I started) because I just found myself being bored by it throughout. It didn't have the same cosy feeling and it just seemed to drag on. I loved that Viv was residing in a little seaside town and helping out in an old bookshop, Little mouse (I forgot her name) was sweet and I loved the re-appearance of Gallina! But that wasn't enough to make it an enjoyable read.

I really wanted to like this book which I guess is why I slogged through to the end and I'm being completely honest when I say at no point did I enjoy this nevermind enjoy it as much as L&L.

This seems to be an unpopular opinion with many 4 and 5 star reviews so as much as this didn't hit the spot for me, I do still recommend it if you enjoyed L&L and want to see more of Viv and her past.

Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the ARC

Bookshops and bonedust was a book that did not really need to exist, much like the previous book. Did I enjoy both, yes.
The characters are engaging and it does genuinely feel like a real dnd campaign that got distracted from the actual plot. I feel it was a bit of a shame to set up a romance with us fully aware that it would not last, and it’s one of the reasons I don’t tend to love prequels. However, some aspects were more interesting than the original. Having a little more of a core conflict and danger was enjoyable and really let the characters shine more.

I very much enjoyed the skeleton a lot.
I hope Travis writes more books because I will read them all.

Loved it so much Travis never fails to deliver with the cute cozy fantasy romance.

I love how much I fall into these books the characters are warm and well rounded and I would happily read book upon book set in this world.

Thank you to the publishers Pan Macmillan and NetGalley for sending me a copy of Bookshops & Bonedust to read and review.

I really enjoyed this prequel to Legends and Lattes. I’m a big fan of Travis Baldree’s work and was thrilled to read his latest book, having read both the self published and traditionally published versions of Legends and Lattes.

It was a joy to revisit my favourite characters and meet a selection of new ones. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This was a heartwarming, charming and a fun adventure to read. However, I found the pace a little slow at times.

If you enjoyed reading Legends and Lattes, this is well worth reading and is a lovely cosy fantasy.

Having absolutely adored Legends and Lattes, I could not wait to get my hands on Bookshops & Bonedust. This book is just as brilliant and entertaining as Legends and I found myself swept away with the story. I loved the mystery of the story but also how emotional and character-rich it was too. It was so interesting to see where Viv's origins began and I just loved the narration of this book. It is one that will stick with me for a long time and has me even more excited for the next book in this series.

After reading Legends & Lattes, I was excited to read this and I ended up enjoying it even more! A cosy bookshop that needs saving? Yes please! The characters in this novel were utterly wholesome, and I loved the friendships Viv made (especially Fern!). The balance between more domestic scenes and the action worked really well for me too. Overall, a great read for curling up somewhere with a cup of tea!

Legends and Lattes was one of my favourite books of last year, and Bookshops and Bonedust is one of my favourite of this year! Honestly, I think Travis Baldree could write a phonebook at this point and I'd love it.

In this prequel to Legends & Lattes, young Viv’s journey with the mercenary company Rackam’s Raven is at a halt due to an injury, and she is forced to recuperate in the beach town of Murk. So far and so quiet from the life she’s always known that she worries if her company will ever return. But Murk isn’t as peaceful as it seems. Viv becomes acquainted with its local enforcement, a bookshop owner, and a baker. And while she might be far away from the battle, it appears that the action might not be far from the shores of Murk.

When I learnt the next in this series to be published was a prequel, I was almost disappointed. I was eager to see more of the future of the world that Baldree created in Legends & Latte. Still, after finishing Bookshop & Bonedust, I came to appreciate the decision of a prequel. Watching a younger, more tenacious Viv navigate her new life in Murk was a lot of fun! Again, despite her gruff nature, Viv can’t help but collect the most exciting group of friends possible. Viv isn’t a reader, or so she thinks when she becomes a budding bibliophile at the request of Fern, a rattkin bookseller who clearly does her job well. The story even shares excerpts from the book Viv is reading, which almost makes you sad that they aren’t fully published stories. As an appreciation for the books, Viv ends up helping Fern fix the dying bookstore to give it the new lease of life it sorely needs. In the same line as Legends, this quickly grows into another ragtag group of new and unexpected friends. Some readers might be disappointed as it can feel like a rehash of the first book. But Legends was much more low-key, while Bookshop leans more into the adventure and a lot more action than the first. Much higher stakes but still retains that cosy and mysterious vibe most readers of the first should be happy to see again here.

While a prequel, this can be read before or after Legends; you’ll either find the ending bittersweet, knowing Viv must leave these friends for her story to continue or find yourself anticipating the next step in her journey. Regardless, Bookshop & Bonedust is a satisfying addition to a series that is growing to become a highly-rated favourite of mine.

5/5 stars! There is something special about a book that has a bit of fantasy, a bit of romance, a lot of friendship, and multitudes of cozy energy. I love a good cozy book and this did not disappoint. This is the kind of book you pick up when it is raining outside and you sit in a window seat with tea and a blankie and just escape into the ultimate cozy adventure.

I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Bookshops and Bonedust is a book that has been on my TBR since it first came out. I read Legends and Lattes when it first came out and fell head over heels in love with Travis’ writing and the cosy vibes of this world. Hearing that there was a prequel, I knew that I just had to read it. I wasn’t actually aware that this book still included Viv. I don’t read blurb’s okay… so sue me! But I am so thrilled that she is in this one again, as I absolutely adore everything about her. I am so glad that I finally picked this one up as it was everything I was hoping for and more. I loved every single moment of this book.

Although this book is a prequel, I highly recommend reading Legends and Lattes first. I feel like this book just means so much more and is so much more enjoyable when you know all of the events from Legends and Lattes. In Bookshops and Bonedust, we have gone back to when Viv was first starting out as a mercenary and finds herself injured, so while she is recovering she finds herself befriending a bookshop owner, and helping her to revive her old bookshop.

I adored every second of this book. Many times I found myself just sat there, grinning at the book. It was just such a cute and cosy read. It really felt like receiving just a big warm hug in the form of a book. One thing I loved about this book is it showed how Viv became a reader. I loved seeing her go from this big hard Orc who doesn’t read, to an avid reader and book lover. It was so beautiful to see and experience. I really do think Bookshops and Bonedust is a love letter to authors, book lovers and readers everywhere. In addition to this, this book did have some higher stakes than Legends and Lattes. I felt like there was little bit more action and plot, which was a big plus for me as a plot driven reader. I honestly just love everything about Travis Baldree’s work. I have fallen head over heels for this world and his characters and I just wanted to stay in this book forever.

Bookshops and Bonedust was just utterly brilliant. I loved seeing younger Viv, but I can’t like I was starting to get sad because I knew from reading Legends and Lattes that she didn’t stay in the seaside town. I just wanted her to stay there forever. I hope Travis decides to write more in this series and in this world, because I just adore it so much. This book has made me realise just how much I love cosy fantasy books and I can’t wait to read more. If you’re after a cosy fantasy read, Legends and Lattes and Bookshops and Bonedust are a must-read!

Book: Bookshops & Bonedust
Author: Travis Baldree
Rating: 3.75 stars 🌟 rounded up to 4

OK, so first of all, I didn't realise this was the prequel going into this, so I was utterly confused! When I got half way through I realised and then it made so much sense!

The first 40% I found hard to get into, but the last 60% really saved it and I did end up really enjoying it! I love that it's based in a bookshop and I loved all the characters

It's definitely not a book for everyone and the writing is quite unusual I think, which some people may not enjoy. But for me, I did end up thoroughly enjoying it! Loved all the cosy feels too! ✨️

I knew before I even started reading this book I was going to love it. I read Legends & Lattes by the same author at the start of the year, and instantly fell in love with the world and characters and Baldree has done it yet again as we follow Viv once again and a new band of characters in a prequel adventure.
I was unsure initially how the first book could be bested, but somehow this one is up there with it. These books are described as cosy-fantasy, with all the elements of a good fantasy story without all the blood and gore and adrenaline that usually follows it.
In the book Viv makes friends with the owner of a bookstore and they end up wrapped up in a little adventure to try figure out how to keep the business running while Viv also keeps an eye out for the evil necromancer she is hiding from while she heals from an injured leg.
Throw in some new friends in the form of some locals, and Viv is able to help keep her new friend's bookstore running while saving the day.
The ending really surprised me as the author manages to wrap up the whole story (without giving any spoilers) ties it nicely into L&L, which proceeded to have me gushing like an idiot at the mere mention of the characters from that book.
If you're looking for a lovely heartwarming fantasy story to read, I definitely recommend reading Legends & Lattes and Bookshops & Bonedust — Travis Baldree is a genius and I can't wait to read whatever he writes next!

If you enjoyed book 1, you'll like this too. I personally enjoyed book 1 more, but I think this is of similar quality. This book felt less 'cozy' because it had more action, but it was still good.

The protagonist must make friends with people in a small town, while she tries to recover from a wound. She befriends a local bookshop owner, and helps revitalize the bookshop, even as she she aids the local town guard investigate a cult of necromancers.

Like book 1, this has a warm and fuzzy feeling reading it, but with more of a focus on action and mystery. I'm glad I read it. It was a good afternoon's read. The author has a talent for characterization and dialogue. I thought the book had a fairly slow start. The plot was entertaining, even though it only gets into gear about 100 pages into the 350 page book.

I loved the first book in the series and I loved this one too! In this book we learn about some of Viv's backstory and what led her to the events of Legends and Lattes. It's full of cosiness and friendship and all of the heart that made the first one so enjoyable as well.

Sadly this book couldnt hold up to the first book in the series since I adored it very much. It was still a decent read and I love the way its written.

This book again epitomised cosy fantasy vibes, however compared to the first this one had more of a main plot to centre around which I found fun! I enjoyed the writing style the author uses for these books and the new slash past introduction of characters was nice and refreshing. I really hope we get another story in Viv's tales, I'd love to read more about her adventures.

Charming, cosy and gentle just like Legends & Lattes (although I do still prefer L&L). I just love how pure this series is, with characters you fall in love with and a world you can settle into and relax. This is definitely one of my favourite series to just feel comforted by, just so heartwarming and fun, and I loved how in this story, the author highlights the magic of finding that special book for the right person. I think the only thing I found to be less enjoyable was, given this is a prequel, knowing how it had to end, and so the ending didn't feel particularly satisfying in the way that that of Legends & Lattes did? However this was still so sweet and lovely and I can't wait to see more from this author.

What a brilliant read this is. So many people talking about it and it is worth all the talk. Excellent ideas, brilliantly executed and one you won’t want to put down

Started off strong & I found myself more intrigued with the story compared to the first book! (Maybe it was the bookshop element).
But it lost my interest towards the end. I found myself confused & struggled to focus. A fairly cosy read & I’d be interested to read more about viv in the future
