A fun, fast paced rom-com featuring a down on her luck art teacher heroine and a century old vampire hero. This book was a lot of fun, lighthearted and the pages all but turned themselves!
At times the story can come off slightly cheesy and the plot is very straightforward and a little convenient. Some more depth and a little more character development would have went a long way here however if you meet the story where it’s at, this book is a great achievement of a debut novel!
"If this guy turns out to be the next Jeffery Dahmer, promise me you'll avenge my death?"
I really enjoyed this book, I read in one sitting. After reading an 800 page book, my brain was struggling and this was exactly what I needed- a light hearted romance, It was fun and cosy. As others have said you definitely get flatshare vibes- Tiffy and Leon post-it notes and here between Cassie and Fredrick with handwritten letters. You can't really expect anything else for a vampire.
Cassie is about to be evicted from her flat, when she comes across an offer on craigslist that seems to good to be true. Here we meet Fredrick, a vampire who is trying to get on in our modern world. When Cassie learns the truth, will she help him? or will she stay clear of him?
There is a slow burn between Cassie and Frederick, both instantly attracted to each other but don't act upon it until later on. There is a little bit of spice and a tiny bit of blood play, which you would expect from a vampire. To be honest I thought there would have been more involved (I personally would have liked more) as I thought one taste of Cassie blood would make Fredrick become more possessive.
I would have liked more of Fredrick. I wanted more vampireyness. I wanted to learn more about him as Cassie did. It would have been nice to have Fredericks p.o.v, you get a peak through his letters/ texts I felt the book focused more on the romance rather than this aspect. Which isn't an issue as I enjoyed it. But I would have still liked a little bit more.
I will definitely read Jenna Levine's work again and I will be buying a copy of this book to add to my collection when it gets published. Thank you Netgalley for a copy of the book for an honest review.
"Buffy was about all I had for guidance. It had to be a more accurate representation of vampires than Twilight or those old Anne Rice novels, right?"
I thoroughly enjoyed this as a good break between some of the book's id been reading, it was cute but also i felt like the plot could have come a bit sooner. Yes, he's a vampire but the roommate doesn't find that out till halfway through, and if she had found out sooner I think things could have progressed in a good flow.
The spice scene felt a little rushed, I did enjoy it though, I just wanted more between them than what we were given, he fell instantly for her and she was all like 'But I'm nothing special' like shut up girl and accept it for what it is haha!
Overall it was a fun read with some comedic moments with a vampire getting used to the 21st-century tech and lifestyle. i enjoyed the MMC more than the FMC because she just seemed to always pity herself.
3/5 ⭐️
2/5🌶️ (really not spicy but the bedroom scene was good)
ARC kindly provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Adorable, quick, cheesy read, filled with loads of laugh-out-loud moments and a vampire who is a pure cinnamon bun. The perfect pallette cleanser book, I managed to read it in a day.
Downsides - I felt like the pacing was a little off, and the 'drama' at the end felt like it was just sort of thrown in as a last minute detail and was resolved waaay too quickly/easily for my liking.
Is it perfect? No.
Did I expect it to be? Again, no.
I went in hoping it would be a silly, lighthearted romance between a vampire and a human, and it was exactly that, and for that I enjoyed it.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review, all views are my own.
Cute, spicy, intriguing and a great time! Great book to spend your time with and interesting plot. The cover is also stunning!
i am not usually one for romance but i LOVED this. frederick and cassie made my heart melt and i instantly needed more when i finished. this was such a beautiful and hilarious story and the buffy references topped it off for me!
Thank you Netgalley and Penguin Random House UK for gifiting me a copy of this book.
I absolutely loved it! It was funny, easy to read, and well-written! I loved the contrast with the two registers (formal and neutral), but also the remarks on the language itself and the expression that we use and that are strange for a person from centuries ago.
The relationship between Reginald and Frederick was great and quite funny, I love them.
I also quite enjoyed the beginning of every chapter as it's written in another form (with a letter for example) than the "normal" narration.
I would absolutely recommend it!
This was such a fun read.
It was very light hearted and cheesy 'paranormal' romance. The writing style flows well
And the banter we see via Text message between Reginald and Fredrick were my favourite parts and I wish there was more of it as it was such a cute love/despise friendship which added much needed lightheartedness to Fredericks personality.
The ending was a bit lack luster and very much tongue in cheek cheesy but served the story well.
My take away from this that Reginald needs his own book.
I absolutely adored every single word in this book. As a dark romance fan myself, I was surprised in the best way how much I enjoyed this light little story. Every single word coming out of Frederick's mouth was perfectly hilarious. His relationship with Cassie was sweet and charming. I laughed from the start to the end. Definitely hope to read more from the author.

I had such high hopes for this book like a cute little paranormal romance but unfortunately I was left disappointed. So let’s get into it.
What I liked:
It was cute and short, it had quite a few enjoyable scenes.
The ending: often with Human x Vampire relationships I dislike how they end up (the Vampire gives up immortality, the Human is forcefully turned etc) but I liked how it ended in this book.
What I disliked:
How it was mentioned Frederick was hot every 2 paragraphs (if that) like Cassie we get it you find him attractive, I don’t need to read it 800 times over.
The characters: at first I liked Cassie but by the end I just didn’t care for her and with Frederick I thought I was going to love him but again I didn’t care for him by the end. And I know this is odd but I also found how Cassie wrote in letters and texts annoying, I don’t know why.
The side characters, their appearances felt sporadic and gave me the feeling that we’d see more of them in the book only to not (though to be fair we did see Reginald towards the end of the book). I also felt like Reginald didn’t really fit into the book, like sure he was a comedic aspect but he just felt misplaced and as much as I wanted to love him I just couldn’t.
The insta-love: I don’t normally mind it but I just disliked it in this book.
The drama around 75% felt pretty random like it was a cute romance book then BAM unnecessary drama which ended up being resolved really easily which made like no sense like it left me a little baffled.
Other thoughts:
Overall I wasn’t too invested in either the characters or romance.
I also felt a lot of descriptions in the book were unnecessary which led to me skimming here and there because of all the unnecessary stuff.
Rating:
I rated it 3 stars as I felt I didn’t enjoy it enough for anything higher but I didn’t hate it enough for anything lower either.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC.
Cassie needs somewhere to live and finds an apartment but can't believe the rent and also the landlord seems a bit strange. Very different
I love a Vampire book and this one was no different! It was the perfect romance mixed with the unexpected.
When Cassie needs to find a new place to live she answers a Craiglists ad for an apartment at $200 per month. It seems too good to be true. And it is when she finds out her Roomate is actually a 300 year old vampire.
They make a deal that she teaches him the ways of the modern world and out of that a romance develops.
If you're a fan of opposites attract and any vampire story then give this one a read!
This was a highly anticipated read for me, I love a cosy paranormal romance and I liked the concept. It started out well, the notes Cassie and Frederick leave each other are very sweet, and his fish out of water schtick is amusing. The story just lacked a little chemistry and depth, and the romance took SUCH a long time to get going. I don't think they even kissed until around the 75% mark - it felt like a LOOONNG beginning and then an end, with nothing in the middle.
I think this is a debut novel which would explain the pacing issues. It was a solid effort for a first book, and it was entertaining enough to give any follow up a try!
I wasn’t sure what to expect going in. When I saw this on Netgalley, I was in the mood for a fun, cooky romcom and it definitely gave me that! I absolutely loved the characters and would have loved to read another story on them.
This was a fun, light story. I really enjoyed the intersection of the fantasy and romcom elements. It was fun and the descriptions of ow out of place Frederick was in our modern world made me laugh. I did want to see more of Reginald and Sam, I really enjoyed their roles in the story.
I feel that the resolution that our main character comes up with felt a bit weak, and the world building felt a bit haphazard at times. It felt like there were bits of information thrown in for comedic effect and then just left for the rest of the book.
Nonetheless, I found this to be enjoyable and I would read a second book in this world, following Reginald (he was probably my favourite part!)
This was quirky and fun! A must read if you enjoy lighthearted romcoms with a paranormal twist -you’ll love this book!
Thankyou to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone, Penguin for a free e-arc in exchange of an honest review.

-Loved the characters
-Loved the romance
-Tender gushy moments
-Period vs modern ideals
-He falls first
-Funny
-Texts, Emails and letters back and forth
I really want Reginald's book to be a thing in the future please!
I absolutely loved this book. I love good action packed vampire books so was not sure how I would find this one, but I loved it. The characters were wonderful. The storyline was charming.
Thanks to penguin for the ARC
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me an arc!
I don't think much is needed for me to say that hasn't already been said.
This book is one star for me because of the very dubious consent during the smut scene:
"my incoherent moan was apparently all he needed in the way of consent"
and
""cassie"..."wait"
"shhh" I murmured"
plus the characters were really flat and all dialogue was really cringey. Really cringey.
Hopefully this was a "it's me not the book" but honestly, I think it could be the book.
First of all I’d like to give a big thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and Jenna Levine for providing me with an E-ARC of ‘My Roommate is a Vampire’ in exchange for an honest review!
Cassie is an artist just trying to make ends meet. After stumbling upon an advert for an amazing place for just $200 a month- a price that seems too-good-to-be-true. Nevertheless, she moves into this strange home with an even stranger roommate/ landlord. Frederick is kind, thoughtful and devastatingly handsome- but its hard to ignore that he also sleeps all day, dresses and speaks like a character from a regency romance novel and keeps bags of blood in the fridge. It’s not long before Cassie realises the truth- her odd new roommate is a vampire. A vampire that desperately needs her help fitting into modern society after being asleep for a century.
My Roommate is a Vampire is a hilarious, sweet, romantic comedy with a bit of spice! It’s such a fun story with plenty of moments that made me laugh out loud, swoon or just drop the book so i could squeal for a while. I don’t think I stopped smiling while reading this book and I devoured it in one day! This book had such cute additions at the beginning of each chapter such as letters, text exchanges, to do lists and questionable search histories and they really moved the story along nicely and added interesting backgrounds to the characters. I loved the writing style of this book, it was so easy to get lost in this book with the loveable characters Jenna Levite’s amazing sense of humour.
The romance in this book was the cutest thing, I loved how it developed throughout the story and the chemistry between Cassie and Frederick was perfect! Frederick is an absolute sweetheart- i don’t think I’ve ever read a male lead like him! He’s gentlemanly, incredibly thoughtful, a little awkward but overall an absolute cinnamon roll- it’s so refreshing to read a male lead that isn’t just another dark and brooding MC who hates everybody in the world but the FMC. Cassie is such a lovely character and I love how realistic she is. It’s hilarious reading about her teaching Frederick about the modern world- he’s just completely clueless and she’s incredibly patient even if she likes to tease every now and again. Also, the spice was great and worked well in the story which is always a bonus!
The side characters in this book were just as loveable as Cassie and Frederick! I loved Cassie’s friend, Sam, and his husband. They were such amazing friends, I think everybody needs a Sam in their life! I particularly adored Frederick’s friend (who he loathes and loves at the same time), Reginald. He was so chaotic and fun and his and Frederick’s exchanges were some of my favourite parts of the book. Based on the ending, I really hope there’s another book with Reginald as the main character, I would 100% read it.
Overall this was an amazing read- I can’t believe it’s a debut novel because it’s so wonderfully thought out and well written. you love vampires, rom-coms and a bit of spice you absolutely need to sink your fangs into this charming novel!
