Premise - intriguing... execution - not quite so good. Part of the problem I also think it's the fact that the formatting was atrocious and made it hard to read, however looking past it, it just felt like a rom-com that went into utter silly territory. Did not hate it for any stretch of the imagiation, but it is not something i see myself picking up again. I also thought the pacing was quite off and Cassie was waaaaaay too childish!

Who knew I needed a vampire romcom book?

This is another cute what I would call magical realism contemporary read (wow that’s a mouthful). It follows Cassie and Frederick (who is a vampire) and how they navigate becoming roommates.

Is this book going to be for everyone? Nope it’s not - it has a few tropes in it like insta love (but not too insta) as well as an age gap romance. For a debut romance I felt it did the job it was supposed to do. Make me laugh, want the two main characters to get together and there was some awwww and a steamy moments.

The interaction between Frederick and Cassie I thought was cute. He being a vampire and just having woken up from being in a coma is trying to fit into society in the modern world. Add in Cassie who he has become be his roommate to learn such things. She is a free spirit and has had a few hard knocks but with Frederick she finds her confidence not only in her artwork but in herself too and I think people are going to miss this important part of the book.

There are some fun moments as well as some pure awww moments. The steam in the book (sexy time) will not be for everyone but I enjoyed it.

Overall it was a cute romance read, it is definitely one to read in one sitting this summer and I’m looking forward to read more from this author.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the copy!

I was interested in the plot of this book but unfortunately I just didn't end up loving this book like I thought I would. It got really slow really fast. I liked Frederick but really disliked Cassie, she was more like a teenager than an adult and it bothered me the whole time. It felt like I was reading about two thirteen year olds who had a crush on each other, the way they would get bashful about their hands accidentally touching or standing too close on a tram, it was so childish. These are supposed to be adults. I hated how unsure of herself Cassie was, i'm not an overly confident person but even I would have at some point just been like 'look, obviously something is going on between us here, what are we going to do about it?' instead of just dancing around everything. It wasnt realistic and it was painful to read those scenes.

The arranged marriage plot line was also a bit silly, and then when we got to the kidnapping/rescue part it got ridiculous.

I also think there should have been a lot more info on Frederick's background, that was more interesting than Cassie's career.

With that in mind, the book had some good aspects, I liked the addition of different media like letters, texts and emails etc put in, especially ones from Frederick's POV.
This is a debut novel so im sure books from this author will only get better, I wouldn't let this book prevent me from looking at future books from this author.

I was looking for something fluffy and light-hearted and this fit the bill perfectly. A slow burn which I enjoyed.
I would have liked more of the vampire side of things, a dual POV would have been great. I'm a sucker for texts and letters dotted throughout books and this really helped give an insight to Frederick's mind.
The ending did feel very rushed and just sort of happened. But it didn't take away my overall enjoyment. Also, the cover is amazing.

Was okay but not my favourite, it is a romcom so I tried to keep that in mind but it was just to cheesy for me

When artist Cassie answers an ad for a too-good-to-be-true room to rent, the last thing she expects is to find herself living with (and falling for) a vampire. However, Frederick J Fitzwilliam proves irresistible...

This is a quirky and fun vampire novel where the vamp is far from what we've started to expect from novels. The romance was fast, but there was a tongue in cheek attitude about the whole book that left me with a smile on my face!

My Roommate is a Vampire by Jenna Levine is a delightful and charming paranormal romance that will capture the hearts of readers. Cassie Greenberg, in need of a new place to live, stumbles upon an affordable apartment in a beautiful neighborhood. Little does she know, her new roommate, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, is anything but ordinary. He sleeps during the day, ventures out at night, and speaks as if he stepped out of a regency romance novel. Oh, and he's a vampire.

Levine's writing is witty and engaging, creating a lighthearted and whimsical atmosphere throughout the story. The dynamic between Cassie and Frederick is electric, and the heart-melting notes he leaves for her and his genuine interest in her life make it hard for Cassie to deny the growing connection between them.

The author seamlessly weaves the supernatural elements of the vampire lore into the contemporary setting, adding a touch of mystery and intrigue. As Cassie grapples with the truth about Frederick's identity, readers will be drawn into the dilemma of whether true love can conquer the obstacles that come with dating a vampire.

The characters are well-developed and endearing, and their chemistry is palpable. Cassie's relatable personality and Frederick's old-world charm create a captivating dynamic that keeps readers rooting for their relationship. The supporting characters add depth and humour to the story, enhancing the overall enjoyment.

My Roommate is a Vampire is a delightful blend of romance, humor, and the supernatural. Jenna Levine's storytelling is engaging and entertaining, making it a perfect choice for fans of paranormal romance seeking a light and enjoyable read. With its heartwarming moments, witty banter, and the question of whether love can conquer all, this book is sure to leave readers with a smile on their faces.

A refreshing take on the romance genre.

This absolutely laugh-out-loud paranormal romance is a quirky sitcom-like read with likeable and witty protagonists, whose chemistry is both believable and endearing.

However, I do wish we recived more insight into the vampire world and its existence - I think it would have been a great addition to be able to experience Frederick's POV to do so. Also, for such a strong first half, I found the ending to be a letdown, as I found the conflict to be resolved overly quickly and easily. I would have liked to see more nuance in the situation.

Since I had an issue with the ending of this novel, I could not decide between a 3 or 4-star rating, as 3 seemed like too little while 4, while not necessarily too high, does not fully reflect my opinion (half ratings are not my thing). In the end, 4 stars it is!

But overall it was a lighthearted, enjoyable debut. Absolutely do give it a go if this concept interest you!

A huge thank you to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for providing me with the ARC and the opportunity to read this book early!

My Roommate is a Vampire is a funny story of two completely mismatched characters who end up exactly where they need to be.

I think when reading this it's important to remember that its genre is a romantic comedy which is meant to be light and a bit absurd.

Some elements of this novel were very strong. The characters, especially Fredrik, are well-developed. I really enjoyed the letter/ text style of narration. It allowed for a lot of humour and to move the plot along.
There is some sexually explicit scenes, which I think were well written and full of 🌶️.

For my personal taste, it was a little bit too cheesy and gushy. I also felt that things were often over-explained, rather than left for the reader to deduce. I think that must be one of the hardest things to master when writing a book - the showing, not telling. Although this is an ARC so those elements may well have been edited since.

I would recommend this book for those who enjoy romantic comedies but who can suspend belief enough to enjoy the fantasy elements.

Thank you netgalley and cornerstone for this eARC in exchange for an honest review..

I was drawn to this by the fun cover and the premise. Sadly the execution didn’t live up to my expectations. The plot didn’t justify the length of this novel. I think it needed a good edit. There was so much meandering around detailing everything. The pacing was incredibly slow for the first two thirds of the book and at times I felt like I was ploughing through treacle.

I expected, with such a long book to get far more explanation of Frederick’s backstory and the whole vampire world he inhabited. It felt like the author concentrated for far too long on minor events and neglected to spend time on major plot points or on character development. Saucepans anyone? Vs How does blood move around his body if the heart isn’t beating? I know which one I wanted to read more about.

I would have liked dual POV. This was told in Cassie’s POV and although the letters and text messages helped give a little insight into Frederick’s thoughts and feelings - it wasn’t enough for me.

The ‘stranger in a strange land’ excerpts were well done as Cassie took Frederick out and about to show him he could live in this century. This aspect was by far the most interesting. Quite why Cassie had no suspicions about Frederick being a vampire rather puzzled me. I think even if the title hadn’t given it away, the first descriptions of the apartment and Frederick would have done so!

The kidnapping and rescue element made no sense and bored me. It didn’t fit into the narrative of the rest of the book for me. Btw, How come his Mum was a vampire if he’d been turned? I felt the vampire world building was not well constructed. Too many questions unanswered and plot holes leading nowhere.

I think my main concern about this book is that the characterisation was neglected. I wanted to like Cassie and Frederick but I never really got to know them as well as I wanted. I get the feeling the author is setting it up for a sequel.

I love vampire stories but I’m afraid this didn’t live up to the hype, but it was a reasonable read .

This was one I'd been dying to read since I'd first heard about it, and my god, it didn't disappoint. I loved Frederick and Cassie. They were such great characters, the banter between them and the spice scenes were just so good! I loved the plot overall, but I did think we would have had some sort of a fight to get Freddie back. It seemed a little too silly. In my opinion, I would have liked a proper fight scene or more of a dialogue, at least to getting him back. But overall, the book was really fun to read, and I loved all the references to Buffy and modern-day slang.

This book was a lot of fun and one I would definitely recommend. I would class it as a vampire rom-com and it kept me entertained throughout.
Cassie is finding life difficult and even more so when she is evicted from her apartment. She can’t believe her luck when she sees a room advertised in a very wealthy area for just $200 a month. She meets her roommate, Frederick J Fitzwilliam and decides that he is not a serial killer and she is safe to move in. After a while, Cassie begins to understand that Frederick is a little different, he is not a serial killer but he is a vampire. A vampire that she may just have the hots for. Frederick comes clean and explains that he has been asleep for 100 years and advertised a roommate so he can learn the ways of the world he has woken up in, Cassie agrees to become his teacher.
I loved both Cassie and Frederick and the banter between them was very natural and believable. The sex scenes were done very well and I loved how their relationship develops and they navigate the many obstacles thrown in their way.
I would highly recommend this book, it is fun, light-hearted and romantic, I loved it!

When I started reading this book, I wasn't sure what I was signing up for other than a romance story between a human girl (Cassie) and a vampire called Frederick. It was everything I hoped for and more!

A super cute romance, laugh out loud moments and a quick and easy read. There were some minor flaws and the ending felt a bit rushed, but if you're looking for a cozy, light-hearted, low stakes vampire romance, look no further. This is a perfect book to read in one sitting on a rainy day. Frederick is the bumbling kind-hearted vampire of my dreams, other vampires WISH they had as much charm as he does.

My Roommate is a Vampire is a romcom about a woman who finds an apartment to rent that seems to good to be true, until she finds out the current inhabitant’s secret. Cassie is a struggling artist, working multiple jobs and in desperate need of a new apartment. When she responds to an ad from the mysterious Frederick for a suspiciously cheap room, it could be the start of a horror film, but instead, he turns out to be very attractive. That, and a vampire.

I was drawn to this book by the fun title and the fact I love vampire books, and a vampire romcom is certainly fun. The book focuses on Cassie and she has a classic romance protagonist life, feeling a bit lost and needing things to go right in her life. As well as her perspective, the book has letters and texts from Frederick and a few other found documents to add to the plot, though the focus is really on the romance, and by the end the narrative gets resolved pretty quickly. As someone who is more into vampire novels than romance novels I wish there was a bit more detail on Frederick’s backstory, as there’s a lot of good elements that aren’t really explored much—it could've gone a lot deeper into the fact it is a vampire romance.

Overall, I found this to be a pretty fun read, but despite the vampire love interest, it wasn't really vampire-y enough for me. The end seemed to set up for a potential sequel so maybe there will be more of the vampires themselves if that is the case, but this was definitely more for people looking for a light romance than people interested in the vampire aspect. I also discovered after reading it that apparently it is based on a fanfic, which makes sense as to why a lot of the characters aren't really fleshed out (e.g. only Frederick's appearance is described) and the tension in the plot resolved fairly quickly, as that's not necessarily what you're meant to be invested in.

I absolutely loved My Roommate is a Vampire, and I already can’t wait for the sequel. It’s laugh out loud funny, clever, and absolutely addictive, and Frederick J. Fitzwilliam (hereby known as FJF) is my new favourite fanged fancy!

Vampires have been my fantasy creature of choice for over two and a half decades (I love them with all my beating heart), and I think this is the first romantic comedy featuring the undead that I’ve read. Jenna Levine does an excellent job of mixing gentle comedy with vampire lore, and there are so many Buffy references I didn’t know what to do with myself.

Cassie Greenberg is our main character, the unassuming artist who answers an ad for a house share. Little does she know that her new roommate is a literal vampire, although there are many, many clues pertaining to this little detail. FJF speaks far too archaically, sleeps all day, and dresses like he’s stepped out of an episode of Downton Abbey. He’s also confusingly ignorant when it comes to social media and the Internet, and has absolutely no idea how to order a cup of coffee. Cassie knows something is amiss, and what follows is a fantastic love story for the (literal) ages.

Cassie is a great character, full of warmth and a no-nonsense attitude. She has a passion for modern art, and far too many jobs for one person. Her interactions and understanding of FJF and his desire to fit in make her a wholly endearing protagonist, and I enjoyed getting to know her. FJF is, physically at least, Angel from Buffy, with the swoony hair and tall stature I know and still obsess over. He’s kind, compassionate, and completely out of his depth in the twenty first century, which makes him all the more likeable. With his old language and intonations, he’s the perfect literary romantic vampire hero I’ve been waiting for. He’s also unintentionally funny, particularly when he’s conversing with his best fang friend Reginald. Their text message threads made me laugh several times, and I hope there’s more of them in the next book.

My Roommate is a Vampire is basically the perfect book for me, and I loved every page of it. I can’t wait to be reunited with Cassie and FJF in 2024’s sequel; I have my theories about what will transpire, but I bet I’m wrong, as always. I hope this debut novel does really well out in the book world, because it certainly deserves to. Also, I’m here to officially offer my time and human expertise to FJF: I’m more than happy to share my Buffy marathons with him, and I’ll even let him drink blood in my presence. I don’t mind at all. Really. Just as long as it’s not mine!

4.5/5.

My Roommate is a Vampire - @jennalevinewrites

A massive thank you to Jenna and @netgalley for this arc!

This is definitely different to what I have been reading lately and in all honestly it's exactly what I needed.
It's such a fun, light hearted and hilarious book which follows Cassie whos life basically sucks right now. She's an artist in her free time who works a few jobs and has big dreams. Those dreams didn't include being evicted from her apartment because she couldn't pay the rent though. Oops.
I'm search of somewhere to live, Cassie comes across a really really odd Craigslist advert for an apartment by a Mr Fredrick J Fitzwilliam who has offered a room in his lavish an apartment for a ridiculous cost per month. Sceptical, Cassie takes the plunge and requests a viewing. Moving in things are odd but not bad odd. There's no kitchen ware for one (Fredrick stated they were being repaired.... They do that?) and her roommate is only up after sun set. Weird. But for $200 a month, Cassie can live with wierd. Communicating mostly through notes left on the kitchen table which include a series of Cassie drawings, the two become closer. But what do you do when you come home to your fridge full of blood bags from the blood bank and your roommates friend strolling in, ripping one open and gulping it down? No it can't be true. That would make Cassies roommate and his friend.... VAMPIRES.

Honestly this was so funny and fast paced it really captured me. The writing style was easy to follow and I loved watching the moments where Cassie and Fredrick got flustered being around each other.
I did however want to see more of the build up and towards the end I feel like their crisis was averted super easy and too quickly for me. I would have liked more drama in that part.
As a whole though it was a super quick easy and effortless vampromancy book with lots of modern references and witty comments that kept me laughing.

There HAS to be a book 2!

Most of the book is light-hearted and fun. I like the two main characters and their interactions, particularly the old-fashioned notes. But parts of the plot were weak and ill-advised. Cassie's plan to get Frederick back was far to simple. It all ended far too easily. Shows promise but not there yet.
