The book was very entertaining and funny. I loved the witty banter and did not mind that it was a bit predictable. Sometimes it is very comforting to know exactly what you get, and that is what this book is.
I recently had the pleasure of delving into this book, and I am beyond impressed with the mesmerizing world that the author has crafted. From start to finish, the intricate plot weaves a tapestry of suspense, emotion, and unexpected twists that kept me eagerly turning the pages.
One of the standout features of this book is undoubtedly its characters. Each one is meticulously developed, breathing life into the narrative with their unique personalities, motivations, and flaws. The protagonists are not just names on paper; they are relatable, complex individuals with whom readers can form a genuine connection. The antagonist, too, is not a mere foil but a multi-dimensional force that adds depth to the story. The author's ability to create such well-rounded characters is a testament to their storytelling prowess.
The plot unfolds seamlessly, drawing the reader into a richly layered narrative that expertly balances tension, drama, and moments of poignant reflection. The pacing is impeccable, maintaining a perfect rhythm that keeps the reader engaged without sacrificing the depth of the story. The author skillfully navigates through various plot arcs, interweaving them with finesse to create a cohesive and satisfying whole.
What sets this book apart is its ability to tackle profound themes while maintaining an accessible and engaging narrative. The book seamlessly combines suspense and emotional depth, making it a truly immersive experience. The author's prose is both elegant and evocative, painting vivid imagery that lingers in the reader's mind long after the final page is turned.
As I reached the conclusion, I found myself yearning for more from this talented author. Their ability to craft a gripping plot and bring characters to life is truly commendable. I eagerly anticipate future works and would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any reader who appreciates a masterfully told tale. If you're searching for a book that seamlessly blends captivating characters with a compelling plot, this is a shining example. I can't wait to explore more literary worlds crafted by this exceptional storyteller.
I love love love this book so so much.
My Roommate is a Vampire is a paranormal romance book about a woman who moves in with a man who turns out to be a vampire and who wants to learn about the current world through her and instead they end up falling in love.
From the first chapter I fell in love with this book and as soon as I met Frederick I fell instantly in love with him.
This book is filled with so much humour and adorable moments between Cassie and Frederick.
My favourite part of this book was seeing Frederick trying to navigate through the modern world and I loved the bit where he started quoting random Taylor Swift facts.
The relationship between Cassie and Frederick was one of my favourite love stories to read. I loved seeing them slowly fall for each other and it all felt so natural and real between them and I couldn't help but fall for their relationship as the chemistry between them was immense.
I absolutely cannot wait to read more by Jenna Levine as I absolutely fell in love with this story and these characters.
"My Roommate is a Vampire" started off with a promising premise that initially grabbed my attention. The concept of a vampire being a roommate certainly had potential for some unique storytelling. However, as I delved deeper into the book, I couldn't help but feel disappointed. The story quickly became predictable and fell into familiar vampire tropes, making it feel stereotypical and cheesy. The characters lacked depth, and the plot seemed to lose its originality, which ultimately led to my decision not to finish reading it. While it may appeal to those who enjoy classic vampire romance, I was hoping for a more innovative and captivating take on the genre.
I really liked this book. It was cosy, romantic, funny and a unique story. It’s an easy read and perfect for spooky season.
Cassie is about to be evicted when she finds the too good to be true apartment she knows there has to be a catch but is desperate, so he checks it out.
Fredrick looks and talks like he is straight from a Jane Austen novel.
What's the catch? Cassie neq Roommate is a vampire, and he wants something from her.
Read in one sitting ! This was just a cosy and fun read about vampires! The romance was just so cute, and I am not embarrassed to say I loved it. If you love a vampire story, I would definitely recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley, Random House UK, and Jenna Lavine for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What a fun, light-hearted read! It's not often a book can actually make me laugh out loud but the writing in My Roommate is a Vampire was so humorous I was giggling along the entire time. Nicely done!
This was such a cute and quirky read, perfect for the autumn months.
The different story line was a refreshing change from a normal romance, adding a new dynamic to the couple's relationship.
I loved reading about the male main character transitioning into the modern world as it added some humour to the story!
Thanks to Netgalley and Penguin for providing me with a copy of this book to review.
This book was the perfect book to start the year off with. The book follows Cassie who is in desperate need of an apartment, and one that is affordable, so when she sees an advert for a house share pop up for remarkably little money, she jumps at the opportunity. She won't even have to see her new flatmate, Frederick J. Fitzwilliam, most of the time as they seem to have opposing schedules. However, things seem to be a little too good to be true, as Cassie soon learns that her new roommate is in fact a vampire.
Honestly, the dynamic of this old-school vampire learning how to make his way in the present day, whilst simultaneously falling for his artsy roommate who is teaching him about the world was so wholesome. It had elements of courtship that I love from historical style novels, as he obviously had quite old-fashioned views of relationships, but also these were constantly challenged as Cassie's views of relationships were based in the 21st Century. It made for an extremely enjoyable read!
I also enjoyed reading about the side characters, especially Reginald, who I'm hoping we'll get a book about in the future, as his love-hate friendship with Frederick was extremely endearing.
Jenna Levine wrote such a fun debut, I can't wait to see what she comes out with next!
3.5* - an odd-couple "will they, won't they" romance with vampires. It is what it sounds like. I mostly enjoyed the read. The characters have good chemistry, the play on vampire lore was a nice change to the romance genre, the story was quite fun. It got a little ridiculous towards the end, but why not! Just go with it.
Thank you to the publisher Random House UK, Cornerstone, NetGalley, and Jenna Levine for an e-arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This new adult, supernatural read was so fun! The fmc Cassie is an artist trying to find success in her field, who finds herself renting an apartment that is much different to what was advertised. Under forced proximity, Cassie and Fredrick (homeowner, roommate and also the vampire) also find themselves living together. They experience some challenging moments as they adjust to each other's company due to their garish differences setting them apart. However, with Cassie now in his life, Fredrick begins to learn everything he can about the modern world in order to blend in, until the very reason for all his efforts is his growing sentiments towards Cassie! Cassie also finds him extremely attractive and these feelings begin to take up much of her thoughts.
Some of my favourite moments were the tender actions that Fredrick showed Cassie, such as the formal letters he would leave her which I think she had no choice but to fall head over heels. There were also some laugh out loud moments, such as when Fredrick misses modern social cues and does things in a literal way! I do wish Cassie showed a little more disbelief and shock when she found out that Fredrick is a Vampire, but I guess this is a fantasy in the end.
I had so much fun reading "My Roommate is a Vampire" during the spooky season. This was a cheerful read full of affection, respect and understanding. We see the unraveling of Fredrick's true character through an endearing slow-burn romance between Cassie and himself under unexpected circumstances. I truly loved it!
This was a goofy & charming debut! I enjoyed the cinnamon bun/Darcy-esque hero (his last name is literally Fitzwilliam :D) and thought there were some genuinely funny moments that made me laugh out loud. I did think the heroine's art career component was under-developed and the third act conflict was resolved a little too easily, but overall, this was really enjoyable and I would continue in the series
This was a cute, funny and easy read.
I was super excited to sink my fangs into this as anything involving vampires automatically lures me in.
It didn’t quite excite me as much as I was hoping, but I still enjoyed it! I was just hoping for a liiiiittle more chemistry, especially with the main love interest being a vampire. Therefore I felt I didn’t connect with the third act as much as I didn’t have strong feelings for any of the characters. The characters were likeable for sure but also didn’t stand out to me. Despite this it was still super cute and very witty! An adorable lil rom-com that I’m sure a lot of people would enjoy!
This was fun!! I love a rom-com with a fantasy element. Loved loved loved. This was lovely and light, and I just couldn't put it down.
This was a light-hearted, cheesy, supernatural romance story. I have to say Reginald was my favourite character and brought a lot of humour with his prankster personality.
2.5/5
Sadly this wasn't quite for me, but I can see it working for a good few other people. Anyone who enjoys Ali Hazelwood's writing and wants a paranormal version of that, with a female protagonist in the arts rather than STEM, this might just be the book for you.
Sadly it lacked depth when it came to the romance for me, and I found it difficult to take the male protagonist seriously the further the book went along, and neither the "rom" nor the "com" bits really did it for me. However, this was a really quick, light read, so no harm done. Not sure if I'm quite sold on reading more from Jenna Levine myself, but I certainly have a clear idea of what readers will likely fall in love with her books.
My Roommate Is A Vampire is the first novel by American author, Jenna Levine. About to be evicted from her apartment, thirty-two-year-old MFA graduate Cassie Greenberg spots a Craigslist ad that seems, for that area of Chicago, too good to be true: “Roommate Wanted to Share Spacious Third-Floor Brownstone Apartment in Lincoln Park. $200 per month.” But she’s desperate, so, encouraged by her best friend, she checks it out.
Frederick J. Fitzwilliam strikes her as a bit weird: drop-dead gorgeous and built, but very formally clad in dated suits, with a very conservative manner. The place is furnished in an old-fashioned style but, with two part-time jobs limiting her budget, Cassie decides she can put up with the décor and Frederick’s quaint ways that include him sleeping all day (do not disturb), his strange naivete about some aspects of modern life (no wi-fi?), and an off-limits closet.
After two relatively satisfactory weeks, though, things suddenly fall apart: Cassie finds bags of blood in the refrigerator, which Frederick’s practical-joker friend Reginald consumes in front of her, and suddenly those bizarre news items about local blood-bank break-ins become very relevant. After Frederick confesses that they are vampires, Cassie flees without further explanation.
But it’s not just Frederick’s physical attraction that eventually moves her to hear his explanation. He has been courteous and extremely kind during her stay and, even though she admits to being a “quirky eccentric who couldn’t hold a job or even an apartment for more than a few months. The girl who would never achieve her dreams or amount to much of anything at all”, whose artistic style involves creating classic paintings subverted with such modern materials they are a step too far for most schools, he says she’s a visionary artist.
Turns out circumstances see him needing someone to teach him how to live in the modern world without standing out, without becoming a target for vampire hunters. Will Cassie step up?
Cassie’s narrative is supplemented by emails, text messages, letters, informal notes left on the kitchen table, and Frederick’s diary entries. There’s quite a bit of sexual tension as Cassie and Frederick try to deny their attraction, some explicit descriptions of what happens when they no longer do, and the dialogue is often laugh-out-loud funny.
This is a fun rom-com with vampire, and readers will be pleased to see that a follow-up, featuring secondary characters from this novel, My Vampire Plus-One, is coming. A very enjoyable debut novel.

This book was so the definition of rom com. I absolutely loved the characters and the plot of this story and I was absorbed in the story. It didn’t take me long to fly through it and I cannot wait to read more from this author again in future.
I definitely wasn’t expecting this to be as good as it turned out to be. It’s a funny, refreshing read. Quite a light read if I am to say. The ending could’ve been a bit better but otherwise I loved it.
This was so fun and refreshing!! Definitely will be recommending to my reader friends. The writing was easy to follow
