I really enjoyed this cute lightweight story about Cassie, a woman in her thirties who hasn’t got her life sorted and her life moving in with Frederick, a vampire who is lost in the modern day. It was cute, it had heart and the spicy scenes did not overwhelm the overall story.
Ideal for anyone who wants a more humorous read for the Halloween season and doesn’t want to think too much. The last third of the book felt a bit rushed, the only scene where there were stakes was easily resolved, but you don’t read these type of books for the world building anyway.
4 stars, it’s a good example of its genre
My Roommate is a Vampire
Jenna Levine
Release date: 29th Aug 2023
“I also need to borrow your little plastic money card thing one last time.”
Text between Reginald and Frederick J Fitzwilliams
Having been in slumber for a century, vampire Frederick is a little out of touch with the modern world, which is why he’s advertised for a roommate; to help him learn the way of modern society.
Cassie – a struggling artist - can’t believe that he’s only asking for two hundred dollars a week, and her lawyer friend Sam thinks he might be a psycho. Thankfully he’s not. He’s just an out if touch vampire and the victim of another of Reginald’s errors or pranks, in asking for ridiculously low rent.
As Cassie is on a low part time income scraping by on jobs at coffee shops and the library, the rent and great location is perfect. Though Frederick is slightly old fashioned, he’s also incredibly delicious and Cassie agrees to move into the apartment, promising herself she won’t be distracted by his charm.
Reggie – Reginald who is sort of best friends with Frederick – is hilarious when it comes to taunting his BFF and teasing him frequently. I really hope there’s another book to come, this time featuring Reggie. He and Frederick claim to hate each other, but it’s the kind of relationship you find in ‘Grumpy Old Men’. And the banter and bickering between the two elderly vampires is hilarious.
Apart from the attraction between Cassie and her roommate, we have the b plot of the gifts Frederick has started receiving. They smell strangely and are from a Miss Jameson in the hopes they continue a long-standing relationship between their two families. This leads to all sorts of conundrums and even danger.
The build up of the friendship, and potential relationship between the two roommates is so sweet, funny, adorable and branching into sexy. Frederick has an old world charm, but also a cute naivety about him for a three hundred year old guy.
The scene in the coffee shop where Cassie gets Frederick to order a coffee in his efforts to blend in is extremely amusing, and honestly, I was with the vampire on this one. Sometimes instead of a double frappe doo-dah, you just want ... Coffee. No frills.
Add in the annoying Reginald, who’s a pseudo-noir vampire with the incessant urge to play jokes on people, and you have a great little trio here. But when push comes to shove, Reggie is one hundred percent there for his old friend.
There are some fantastic little scenes here, from Frederick’s secret “extra power” to Reggie’s pirate joke, that make this book very funny and a sheer, quirky delight to read.
The cover art completely captures the tone of the book and I don’t think I’ve laughed so much in ages.
This is such a wonderful and cosy paranormal romance and I definitely want more.
Especially more Reggie. It would be great to see him out of his depth for a change.
I adored this book and suspect I’ll be checking out more of Levine’s work.
Such a terrific book to sink your teeth into, with a guaranteed HEA.

Review: This book was absolutely fun! I especially loved Frederick as a character. I love his ancient vibes. The way he speaks is just >>>> I don’t know how to describe it in words, but it’s just the best. I don’t know why I like his formal way of speaking, but I do. Apart from how nice it sounds, it’s also realistic considering Frederick is… old. He’s from a different time, when speaking in such a manner was the norm. Frederick is simply such an interesting character. I also love his friendship with Reginald. The characters are just so fun!
The pacing of this story was great! I like how all the signs were there, but Cassie never really realised that Frederick was a vampire until the most obvious evidence was presented in her face. It’s realistic considering people would naturally not have “vampire” as their first thought, even with all the vampires in media. To most people, vampires are fictional. It’s not easy to break what a person already believes in. So I think the author handled the revelation very well.
Cassie and Frederick are so cute and funny as well. I just love the letters they exchange with each other. (Okay, I also love the text messages he and Reginald exchange – You have to love their friendship-not-friendship!) This is truly a rom-com, considering how hilarious some parts are, all the while telling a love story. I also love the vampiric worldbuilding and how everything in the book ties together.
I recommend this book to readers who want a light-hearted romance read! It’s certainly humorous and enjoyable, perfect for people who want a casual and easily digestible read. This book is definitely a comedy!
Thank you, NetGalley, for the read.
This was the paranormal romcom I never knew I needed. It was funny and sweet and I loved it so much. The note writing was giving Flatshare vibes and I was absolutely here for it. Frederick is awkward and polite and Cassie, whilst a little insecure, is still unapologetically herself and witty (albeit a little too quick to accept the whole vampire thing imo but it's fiction so we allow it). Their dynamic was cute and wholesome with a pinch of spice thrown in for the grown ups.
It was a very enjoyable read, both characters likeable and a fresh, lighthearted read that I absolutely needed.
Cassie needs a new place to live, and affordable is key. When she sees an ad for a room in an apartment for a steal of a price, she can't help but go and see
Here she meets Fredrick who will be available all day, is out all night and has a strange cupboard she is never allowed to enter.
But he seems nice enough and the rent is cheap so Cassie moves in
Little does Cassie know, there is more to the well dressed old fashioned Fredrick that she could imagine
This was a great wee read, I love books that utilise letters/messages in the story and this does these very well.
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for the early copy of this book to read and review
When Cassie needs a room to rent she finds a super cheap room with a rather odd gentleman. He doesn't come out during the day, he dresses oddly and his apartment is... historic. Cassie feels very drawn to Frederick but then discovers the inevitable - blood in the fridge...!
Soon Cassie is drawn into a world of vampires, with a disagreeable matriarch and a lot of watching Buffy.
🩸🩸🩸
This story was a bit of fun and I loved the references to the Flatshare and Buffy.
🧛🎨 Book Review 🎨🧛
Since I’ve seen this book around I have been so eager to read it. It sounded just like the type of low angst fun with a twist I needed. I wasn’t wrong, and I’m so glad about it.
The premise reminded me *so much* of the Flatshare by Beth O’Leary, since both heroines are in bad financial situations and need to move out of their places and find somewhere to live that’s affordable.
Cassie is too desperate to dwell on why the rent is only 200 dollars and there’s no pics on the add, which sounds written by Jane Austen. She comes to visit and realises that the roommate is actually a super hot 30y old dressed like he’s the biggest fan of downtown abbey. It’s so funny how they also communicate with post it notes and get to know each other.
Read if you’re in the mood for:
🧛 Vampire hero/human heroine
🎨 Modern arts girl and old fashioned hero
🫠 Modern world lessons and shopping for clothes
🫕 Acts of service
📝 Epistolary elements. I hate texting but I’ll do it for you
🧡 Low angst and funny
Thank you to the publisher for my review copy, opinion is my own
The premise of this book drew me in and the set up the led to Cassie and Frederick being roomies was good. The execution however of the rest of the plot was just okay. I got no tension/ chemistry between the leads despite the whole vampire thing. I also found Cassie and Frederick as characters to be decidedly unremarkable/meh which fed into the lack of chemistry between them. The vampire lore aspect felt really underdeveloped which meant there was a lack of suspense or jeopardy in the final conflict which annoyed/frustrated me. Cassie’s lack of curiosity about vampirism drove me potty. I get that the author wanted to gradually build the relationship/trust between her and Frederick but there were so many questions I felt Cassie should have asked but just didn’t bother to. Frederick learning how to human could have been a lot more fun as well but again it was only just okay. This book had the potential to be a lot more engaging, entertaining and chemistry filled than it was. Overall 2.5 ⭐️.
Thank you, Netgalley and publisher, for the review copy!
I really enjoyed it, it was silly and ridiculous but also quite cute in parts. I did have minor issues with it here and there (such as, I’m confused why the vampire didn’t know what so much was, because he had been alive since the 1700’s - I assume he lives out in the world, would interact with people occasionally, etc, so it was weird to me that he didn’t know what things like mascara was, on the other hand it did make for comedic value!), and I wanted a bit more from their romance fleshed out, but overall it was a really enjoyable read. I look forward to seeing what else this author comes up with in future!
Cassie was such a good heroine. I love her so much. Her passion for art was so beautiful, and I love that she discovers that teaching arts might be a path that makes her happy. Arts is such an important aspect in education and deserves more appreciation!
The romance was freaking perfect. Roommates is always good and Frederick was such a sweetheart trying to make the house comfortable for Cassie. Communication via notes is one of my favorite microtropes when it comes to roommates and in this book it was hilarious. Frederick’s notes got me laughing out loud so many times. And his Taylor Swift culture! He’s the best. And the steam. He made me blush!
Gosh, I really loved this. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s funny, cute, low-angsty and just so good and cozy! And I am so ready for what’s coming next…
Thank you to NetGalley & Penguin Random House UK for gifting me with an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
I want to start off just by saying that this was not a bad book – it just wasn’t for me.
Also full disclaimer – my Grandfather’s name is Frederick so I fear I was doomed from the start.
I thought the premise and the idea of the book sounded really funny, but I just couldn’t connect to either of the main characters. I wasn’t expecting Frederick to be quite so stuck in the past (although the letter exchanges were extremely cute) and I found Cassie completely naïve. The romance between them seemed incredibly farfetched and a little too insta-lovey for my tastes.
I also felt like there were moments where I probably should’ve been laughing, but any joke I came across just fell flat. There was some ‘spice’ which I genuinely wasn’t expecting but thought was written well, however the ending with Cassie’s bluff was incredibly cringey to me and kind of left me disappointed.
I’m sure this will be someone else’s favourite read, unfortunately it’s not mine.
3 stars
I have honestly really enjoyed this book. It’s a bit cheesy and predictable, but I think that adds to its charm and it’s just such a fun read.
I ADORED Fredrick and how weird and innocent he was (although not very innocent in the bedroom at all 😏). He really seemed to care for Cassie straight away and wanted her to be the one to help him reintegrate to 21st century life. I particularly liked it when there were no pots and pans and he said they were getting repaired 😂.
Their growing romance was a good slow burn and I was wondering how spicy it would be. When the spice is there it is done really well I would’ve enjoyed more, but it’s not imperative to the story. I love that Fredrick made Cassie so much more confident in herself and her art and that she succeeded in helping him adjust more to the real world - especially his growing love for online shopping 😂.
I like that there wasn’t a big showdown in the end as I don’t think that would’ve suited the book and that Fredrick was able to escape captivity from the Jamesons and come back to Cassie. The ending was also very sweet, seeing how smitten they were for each other and that they promise to think about the future.
Overall a really enjoyable read that I devoured in a day and would read again!
Thanks yo the author, netgalley and random house UK for the access to this ARC. This book was such a FUN journey. After read a very heavy book I needed a fresh breath of a romcom that make me laugh and feel like home. This one was perfect for it. I think this is the perfect reading for any romcom fans and l spooky season is coming so I definitely will buy a copy of this WORTh the hype book. Is a sweet, hot and fun vampire book. Perfect debut novel I can’t wait to read more from the author.
Thank you for Netgalley and Random House UK for this ARC.
This story follows Cassie who is in desperate need for a new apartment and when she finds one that may be a little too good to be true, there does appear to be a catch with a rather odd roommate. This was a really sweet, easy read that had me smiling and giggling my way through all the adorable ways in which Frederick just did not get the modern world but had such an earnestness to try. I loved how they seemed to both care so genuinely for each other and it left me feeling all warm and fuzzy when it was over. I would definitely read more from this author.
Thanks so much to Netgalley and Cornerstone for giving me an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
This was my first time reading anything by Jenna Levine, and I can’t wait to read what she brings out next!
This book was simply an easy to read, and funny paranormal romance. It focuses on the two main characters, Cassie and Frederick. Cassie being an artist who needs to find a new place, and Frederick being a vampire who needs to learn how modern society works.
You watch them slowly fall in love with each other while Cassie helps him learn the ins and outs of modern day slang, and how to use the internet. It was fast paced, but not really a lot happens. There’s a slight bit of drama at the end, but it really just does focus on Cassie and Frederick and then learning more about each other.
I really liked this book, but it just fell a bit flat for me as I felt more could have happened to keep the storyline a bit more interesting. Loved the characters and the backdrop, just felt it lacked a bit of something to keep me drawn in.
I would recommend this to any romance lover, it’s easy to read and you won’t want to put this down!
This was such a fun guick read! This was a perfect summer read to pick up and was a nice palate cleanser between some other more serious reads.
As the synopsis states this is a comedy so don't go into this expecting it to be a serious read because then you'll be disappointed, this is a romantic comedy and it is cheesy in all the best ways. I honestly had so much fun reading this and it reminded me of all the cheesy YA romcoms I would read as a teenager.
If you love a fun and bubbly romance then I would definitely recommend picking up this one.
Thank you to Netgalley and Isabella Levine for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was really intrigued by this book! The cover, the synopsis, it just drew me in!
Unfortunately I struggled to get a bit it and it was eventually a DNF for me.
I found the characters hard to warm to, I never felt like I really got to know any of them and I found a lot of the dialogue very cheesy. It reads more YA to me than anything else.
Cassie Greenberg is being evicted from her apartment and is desperate to find somewhere new. Unfortunately, everywhere is far too expensive. Then she spots an ad for a roommate in a good area at a very cheap price. Cassie wonders what is wrong with the place or the man advertising it, but when she meets him he is gorgeous if a little old-fashioned, just like the apartment.
Frederick works nights so Cassie won’t see much of him, but when she does, there is definitely something between them.
Frederick is hiding something though, and if he decides to tell Cassie, it could destroy any possibility of anything between them.
This book is funny, romantic, and captivating. It will have you laughing one minute and going “ahh” the next. Perfect to relax and lose yourself in.
I'll start with it's a great cover, very eye catching and the title has a nostalgic feels from those classics 80's movies like Vamps etc. The story follows down and out artist Casse struggling to make ends meet and about to be evicted. Casses and her best friend Sam find a beautiful room in a very expensive are for £200, who could refuse such a bargain, however it's not all too good to be true, surely not. When Casse goes to meet her potential new flatmate he is the embodiment of perfection and although outdated so it the flat so she moves in. The story is funny relatable and very easy to read, it was relaxing to delve in to the story and see how Casse and Frederick's relationship evolves. Overall a fun read that I would recommend to many.
Oh I loved this book so much! A funny romcom but with a vampire flatmate!
It was fast paced and an easy read and I highly recommend it. It worked for me as a great palette cleanser between fantasy series.
